iOS 26.2 beta 2 is out with changes to the Games and Measure apps Macworld
A day after the wide release of iOS 26.1, Apple released the first beta of iOS 26.2. This release is again expected to focus primarily on polish, tweaking, while adding quality-of-life enhancements rather than any big new features.
Update 11/12/25: The second beta of iOS 26.2 is out now, with further interface refinements in the Games and Measure apps.
iOS 26.2: What’s new
We will continually update this list as the beta progresses and more changes are added and discovered by the community.
Measure app: The Measure app gets a new Liquid Glass design.
Games app: New library filtering, improved controller navigation, and challenge scores that update in real time.
Updated Sleep Score ranges: Apple has adjusted what the various Sleep Score ranges mean, making it require higher scores for the better descriptions. For example, “High” used to be a score of 70-89, and is now 81-95.
Lock Screen Liquid Glass slider: The clock control for the Lock Screen how has a slider to adjust how transparent/glassy the time readout should be. This replaces the old “clear or tinted” toggle.
Apple News design: The design of Apple News has been tweaked, with four quick-select categories at the top. These appear to be based on your previous activity.
Podcasts improvements: The Podcasts app gets auto-generated chapters along with the ability to more easily follow mentioned podcasts or follow up on links mentioned in a podcast episode.
Set Alarms and Timers for Reminders: If you set a reminder as “urgent” you will be asked if you wish to create and alarm or timer for it.
Freeform app: You can now insert tables into your boards.

Everything New in iOS 26.2 Beta 2 Apple today provided developers with the second beta of iOS 26.2, which adds a few new features worth knowing about.
Measure App
Apple's Measure app now features a Liquid Glass design for the level, with two Liquid Glass bubbles instead of white circles.
Games App
There's now an option to sort games in the Games app Library by size, in addition to Name and Recent.
CarPlay
The CarPlay app supports disabling pinned messages in the Messages app.
Menu Animations

Alerts
Apple now provides more information on the Enhanced Safety Alerts added in the first beta.
Enhanced Safety Alerts can provide you safety alerts on your iPhone and Watch to notify you of an emergency event, such as an earthquake or flood. These alerts are sent over available connectivity, such as Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, and, when available, mobile data. Apple can deliver Enhanced Safety Alerts to your current region, which is determined using your device location. A region may be a country, or for some countries (such as the US), a region may be a group of states. Your Apple device can be associated with this region. Apple does not store information about your device location in a region.
Enhanced Safety Alerts are turned on by default. You can disable or re-enable Enhanced Safety Alerts by going to Settings > Notifications > Enhanced Alerts > Enhanced Safety Alerts, then tapping to turn one or more types of Enhanced Safety Alerts on or off. Enhanced Safety Alerts are delivered by Apple and will appear and sound different to a Government Alert sent by your local government.
Improve Alert Delivery uses your approximate location to improve the timeliness and reliability of Enhanced Safety Alerts. For example, Earthquake Alerts might be delivered quicker and more reliably when Improve Alert Delivery is turned on. Apple does not store your approximate location. You can enable Improve Alert Delivery in Settings > Notifications > Enhanced Alerts > Enhanced Safety Alerts > Improve Alert Delivery.
To receive Enhanced Alerts, you must have enabled Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > System Services > Alerts & Shortcuts Automation.
Other Features
There are several other new features coming in iOS 26.2, such as a Liquid Glass slider for the Lock Screen and Live Translation support for the AirPods in the European Union. More information can be found in our iOS 26.2 beta 1 guide.

Aqara Launches Matter-Supported FP300 Presence Sensor Aqara today launched its latest sensor, debuting the Presence Multi-Sensor FP300. Aqara’s sensor is able to determine when someone is in the room, providing a useful way to control HomeKit-connected lights and devices.
There are dual mmWave and passive infrared sensors inside the FP300, and in our testing prior to launch, the sensors worked well to detect presence and keep lights on even when sitting still.
A wide 120-degree field of view provides coverage of most of a room depending on where the sensor is located, and Aqara added extra sensors for ambient light, humidity, and temperature. It’s handy to have extra sensors for keeping an eye on room conditions or activating scenes based on parameters like light levels.
Unlike prior Aqara sensors that detect presence, the FP300 is battery powered so it can be placed anywhere, and it’s also more affordable. At $50, it’s an easier buy for rooms where you want better control over when the lights are on and off. The sensor is small and unobtrusive with a rotatable base, so it can be placed almost anywhere. It comes with screws, adhesive and a magnet for mounting it on the wall or another surface.
Compared to the more expensive FP2 Presence Sensor from Aqara, the FP300 is not as advanced and does not include multi-person detection, sleep tracking, or fall detection capabilities.
There are plenty of sensors that can detect movement to turn on lights or activate other devices, but those mostly work by detecting movement upfront and then turning the lights off after a set period. Aqara’s Presence Sensor works much better than these static motion sensors. It keeps the lights on inside the closet for the entire duration that I’m in there before turning them off again. It has a range of almost 20 feet, so it works in most rooms.
The FP300 is able to connect to HomeKit using Matter, and it also includes Zigbee and Thread protocol support. When used in Thread mode, it can connect with Apple Home without a hub, but Zigbee mode requires an Aqara Zigbee Hub.
It supports HomeKit automations, so you can create actions for turning on lights or other devices when you enter the room, or use features like the ambient light detection to automate your lights when it starts to get dark.
Combining the included sensors is useful too. You can set up an automation for turning the lights on in the dark only when presence is detected, or activating the thermostat only if it’s over a certain temperature while someone is in the room. Aqara designed the sensor with AI, and it can adjust detection sensitivity to the room where it is placed.
There are two CR2450 batteries inside, which will need to be replaced approximately once every two years when it’s connected via Thread.
The Presence Sensor FP300 can be purchased from Amazon for $50 as of today.Tag: AqaraThis article, "" first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums

macOS Tahoe 26.2 Gets Edge Light Feature for Video Calls The second beta of macOS 26.2 introduces a new Edge Light feature that's designed for video calls on FaceTime and other video calling platforms. It adds a light border around the edges of your Mac's display, providing improved lighting. Apple says that it is meant to help you look your best on video calls.
Edge Light mimics a ring light, eliminating the need for a separate device. It can provide illumination when you're in a dark room, and customize the light to match the brightness of the ambient lighting.
The Mac's Apple Neural Engine is able to detect your face, relative size, and location in the video frame to position the light appropriately, and it will fade out to allow you to access content on your screen when needed by detecting your mouse cursor. You can adjust the color of the light using a slider that transitions between warm and cool options.
Edge Light can be accessed in the settings of video conferencing apps alongside other options like backgrounds, Portrait mode, Studio Light, and Voice Isolation. The feature is available on Macs that support Apple silicon, and it works with both webcams and external cameras that are connected.
On Macs from 2024 and later, Edge Light can turn on automatically when ambient lighting in the room drops.
Developers can try Edge Light today, and macOS Tahoe 26.2 is set to launch to the public in December. Related Roundup: macOS Tahoe 26Related Forum: macOS TahoeThis article, "" first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums

OpenAI Launches Smarter, More Conversational ChatGPT 5.1 OpenAI today upgraded GPT-5 to GPT-5.1, the next-generation version of the AI model that powers ChatGPT. There are two versions of GPT-5.1, including Instant and Thinking.
Instant is warmer, more intelligent, and better at following instructions, according to OpenAI, while GPT-5.1 Thinking is easier to understand, faster on simple tasks, and more persistent on complex tasks.
OpenAI says that users can expect a more enjoyable communication experience, with options to more easily customize ChatGPT's tone. There are new presets for tone, including Professional, Candid, and Quirky. The new presets join the existing Default, Nerdy, Cynical, Friendly (previously Listener), and Efficient (previously Robot) options. ChatGPT can also proactively offer to update preferences during conversations when you ask for a certain tone or style, and there are fine tuning options to adjust how concise, warm, or scannable responses are, along with how often it employs emojis.
By default, GPT-5.1 Instant is warmer and more playful, and more likely to adhere to parameters that you set. GPT-5.1 Thinking is able to adapt thinking time more precisely to the question, and responses are clearer with fewer undefined terms. It's also warmer and more empathetic than before.
Questions will continue to be routed to the most suitable model using GPT-5.1 Auto. GPT 5.1 Instant and Thinking are rolling out to users today, with paid Pro, Plus, Go, and Business users set to get access first, then free and logged-out users. Enterprise and Edu users will get a seven-day early-access toggle, after which GPT-5.1 will become the default model.
OpenAI plans to roll out GPT-5.1 gradually to keep performance stable, so not all users will see it right away.
GPT-5 will remain available in the legacy models dropdown for paid subscribers for the next three months.Tags: ChatGPT, OpenAIThis article, "" first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums
You can now use your iPhone as your Digital ID–here’s how Macworld
Apple announced its new Digital ID initiative back at WWDC in June, but the capability didn’t ship as part of iOS 26—it was one of the very few announcements that took a little longer to reach our iPhones. Now, Apple has made Digital IDs available to anyone running iOS 26.1. No further software update is available; Apple enabled the capability with a server-side switch.
The Digital ID is essentially a copy of your passport, and has limited availability and use. It currently requires a U.S. passport that has not expired, and once your Digital ID is created, you can only used it in a beta test as your ID for the TSA in about 250 airports, and only for domestic travel.
Eventually the goal is to allow it as your ID at other locations and businesses, including online, to verify your age or identity. Apple explicitly notes: “Digital ID is not a replacement for a physical passport, and cannot be used for international travel and border crossing in lieu of a U.S. passport.”
Creating your Digital ID
You must have an iPhone running iOS 26.1 or Apple Watch running watchOS 26.1.
Open Wallet
Tap the + button at the top of the screen.
Select Driver’s License and ID Cards.
Select Digital ID.
Choose whether to add your Digital ID to iPhone and Apple Watch or iPhone only.
Follow the on-screen prompts to scan your passport, place your iPhone against the chip embedded in the back of your passport.
Follow the prompts to take a photo of yourself, and additional live movements—this is similar to setting up Face ID.
You will then submit your info for verification, and when complete, your passport will be added to your Apple Wallet.
This can be a convenient form of ID for those in the United States who are flying domestically but don’t have a state-issued ID with Real ID or whose state hasn’t added support in Apple Wallet. But it cannot be used everywhere that your passport may be required, especially international travel, so you’ll still want to keep your physical passport handy.

New HomePod Mini, Apple TV, and AirTag Were Expected This Year — Where Are They? While it was rumored that Apple planned to release new versions of the HomePod mini, Apple TV, and AirTag this year, it is no longer clear if that will still happen.
Back in January, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman said Apple planned to release new HomePod mini and Apple TV models "toward the end of the year," while he at one point expected a new AirTag to launch "around the middle of 2025." Yet, nothing so far.
There are reasons to believe that at least one of the products could be updated imminently, but there are also signs that Apple might hold off until next year.
For starters, HomePod mini inventory is running low at many of Apple's retail stores, and the speaker is completely out of stock at select resellers. That would typically be a sign that a hardware refresh is imminent, but it is already mid-November, so it is getting late in the year. Apple just updated its online store for the holiday season, and it even highlights the existing five-year-old HomePod mini as a gift idea.
"We are excited to be sharing our most extraordinary lineup of products as we head into the holiday season," said Apple CEO Tim Cook, in a press release at the end of October. Did he mean no more new products this year? Maybe. Maybe not.
Apple rarely launches new products in the second half of November or December, but it has happened a few times. For example, the original 16-inch MacBook Pro was announced in November 2019, and the AirPods Max were unveiled in December 2020. So, anything is possible. Just keep your expectations low.
All in all, the reality is that nobody seems to know if the HomePod mini, Apple TV, and AirTag will be updated this year anymore — at least until the next rumor surfaces.
If the HomePod mini and Apple TV do not end up being updated until 2026, it could be the result of Apple delaying its more personalized version of Siri until next year, as Gurman expects both devices to support the revamped assistant. The improved Siri is currently expected to launch as part of iOS 26.4 in March or April. It is possible that Apple would want to show off the new-and-improved Siri at the same time as the first new devices that will run it, including the company's long-rumored smart home hub.
The current HomePod mini was unveiled in October 2020, while the latest-generation Apple TV 4K was released in October 2022.
It is harder to explain why the AirTag has not been updated yet. Apple unveiled the current version of the accessory in April 2021.
Below, we have recapped rumored features for each product:HomePod mini: S9 chip or newer with support for next year's revamped version of Siri powered by Apple Intelligence, Apple's N1 chip with Wi-Fi 7 support, improved sound quality, a second-generation Ultra Wideband chip for proximity features, and potentially new color options like Red.
Apple TV: A faster A17 Pro chip that will support next year's revamped version of Siri powered by Apple Intelligence, and Apple's N1 chip with Wi-Fi 7 support. A built-in FaceTime camera has been rumored for a future Apple TV, but it is unclear if that will arrive with the next model specifically.
AirTag: Up to 3× longer item tracking range vs. current AirTag, a more tamper-proof speaker, and "very low" battery life alerts. What do you think? How to use an iPhone to take pictures of the Aurora Borealis The Aurora Borealis will be visible across most of the US and Canada on November 12. Here's how to get the perfect picture using your iPhone. The iPhone is pretty good at night sky photography now (Simulated image)The Aurora Borealis, also known as the Northern Lights, is a light display caused by charged particles from the sun hitting the upper atmosphere of the Earth. The result is a colorful light show around the North Pole. However, a geomagnetic storm has magnified the effect, making it visible from further south than usual. This includes quite a few U.S. states that don't usually get to see it, including some reporting to see it as far south as Texas. Continue Reading on AppleInsider | Discuss on our Forums

Apple: Developer fee cuts in the EU have not been passed on to end users Apple's decision to lower developers' App Store fees — forced upon them solely to appease the European Union's relentless overreach into…

Apple Study Finds Mandated Fee Reductions Never Reached European Consumers Apple said Wednesday that European Union developers pocketed the savings from mandated commission reductions rather than lowering prices for consumers. The iPhone maker commissioned Analysis Group to study pricing behavior [PDF] after the Digital Markets Act forced Apple to cut its App Store fees from up to 30% to an average of 20%. The research examined 41 million transactions across 21,000 products between March and September 2024, generating 403 million euros in sales. Developers maintained or raised prices on nine out of 10 products. Non-EU developers captured 86% of the 20.1 million euros in reduced commissions. Price cuts occurred on 9% of products, but the study attributed these to normal pricing patterns unrelated to the fee reduction.
Apple argued the regulation creates barriers for innovators and exposes consumers to risks without delivering promised benefits.

The Apple Watch Series 10 drops to its best price ahead of Black Friday Macworld
With the new Apple Watch on the market, we’re always on the lookout for a price drop on the previous-gen models. Today we’ve got a great one: You can get the Watch Series 10 right now for $280, its best price ever, and a serious 30% discount from its regular price.
The smartwatch has everything you get with the Series 11—a thin and large display, a gorgeous design, a good and sturdy build, and enough battery life that you only have to charge it at night. You can use this one to track your fitness journey, stay connected to your phone around the clock, and even run ECGs if you’re ever worried about your heart. You’ll even get the Sleep Score and the cool sleep apnea alert feature after the watchOS update 26.
The Apple Watch Series 10 is a fantastic piece of tech, and we absolutely loved reviewing it, giving it a 4.5-star rating and our Editors’ Choice award. The main difference to the newer model is that you only get 18 hours of battery life vs 24 on the newer model, so you’ll probably have to recharge both once a day. But a quick 15-minute charge will get you through a night’s sleep, so it’s not too inconvenient.
We’re never sure how long these deals stick around, so hurry and grab one of these Apple Watch Series 10 for $280 while the deal’s still around.

However, on Wednesday, Apple extended the functionality so you can do it with passports too.Marketed by Apple as Digital ID, the newly-launched feature lets users create an ID in Apple Wallet, using data from their U.S. passport. Apple Announces Launch of U.S. Passport Feature in iPhone's Wallet App Apple today announced that iPhone users can now create a Digital ID in the Apple Wallet app based on information from their U.S. passport.
To create and present a Digital ID based on a U.S. passport, you need:
An iPhone 11 or later running iOS 26.1 or later, or an Apple Watch Series 6 or later running watchOS 26.1 or later
Face ID or Touch ID and Bluetooth turned on
An Apple Account with two-factor authentication turned on
A valid U.S. passport that is not expired
Your device region set to United States
To create a Digital ID, tap on the plus sign in the top-right corner of the Wallet app on the iPhone, and then select Driver's License or ID Cards. Next, select Digital ID and follow the on-screen instructions to start the setup and verification process.
During the setup process, one must use their iPhone to scan the photo page of their physical passport. They will also be asked to use their iPhone to read the chip embedded on the back of their passport, to ensure the data's authenticity. From there, they are asked to take a selfie for verification, and as another security step, they will also be prompted to complete a series of facial and head movements during the setup process.
After creating a Digital ID in the Wallet app, you can present it in person at TSA checkpoints in select U.S. airports for age and identity verification purposes during domestic travel. However, Apple said it is not a replacement for a physical passport, and it cannot be used for international travel and border crossing purposes.
At launch, Apple said Digital IDs are accepted at TSA checkpoints at more than 250 airports in the U.S., but the company said the feature is still in public beta.
To present a Digital ID in person, double-click the iPhone's side button and select Digital ID. Then, hold the iPhone near a scanner, review the information being requested, and authenticate with Face ID or Touch ID. The feature is also available on the Apple Watch.
In the future, Apple said users will be able to present their Digital ID at select stores for identity and age verification in person, as well as in supported apps and online on supported websites. No specific timeframe for this was shared.
Apple said Digital ID data is encrypted, and it ensured that iPhone and Apple Watch privacy and security features help protect against tampering and theft. Users do not need to unlock, show, or hand over their device to present their Digital ID.
This feature builds on the existing driver's license feature in the Wallet app, which is currently available in 12 U.S. states, as well as the U.S. territory of Puerto Rico. Japan's My Number Card can also be added to the Wallet app.
More details about the passport feature are available in an Apple support document.Related Roundups: iOS 26, iPadOS 26Tag: Apple WalletRelated Forum: iOS 26This article, "" first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums

Apple Stores roll out holiday decorations to kick off the season Apple is kicking off the holiday season today, with an extended product return window now in place, and decorations for the online store and retail locations. Here’s a look at this year’s holiday theming.

Apple's Extended Return Policy Now in Effect for 2025 Holiday Season Apple's extended return policy went into effect today for the 2025 holiday shopping season. The policy applies to most products sold by Apple online and in its stores, but there are a few exceptions, including most carrier-financed iPhones.
In the U.S., Canada, U.K., Australia, and many other countries, most products purchased between November 12 and December 25 of this year may be returned through January 8, 2026, according to Apple's website. All purchases made after December 25 in those countries are subject to Apple's standard 14-day or 15-day return policy.
In some countries, such as Italy, Spain, Japan, and Mexico, the return window is slightly longer. Apple says eligible products purchased in those countries between November 12 and January 6, 2026 may be returned through January 20, 2026.
Apple has also updated its online store with gift recommendations for the holidays. Notably, this includes the HomePod mini, Apple TV, and AirTag, even those though products have not been updated in years. HomePod mini inventory is low at many Apple Stores, and the speaker is entirely out of stock at select resellers, but there is no clear consensus as to whether it will still be updated this year, as was initially rumored.

EU developers don't pass on App Store fee savings to users The main reason the Digital Markets Act exists according to the European Union is to lower costs for consumers. For App Store customers, developers didn't bother to cut prices. An EU flag with the App Store logoThe Digital Markets Act (DMA) is how the European Union (EU) and its European Commission (EC) were able to fine Apple $570 million over allegedly treating consumers unfairly. It's how the EU could fine the company $2 billion for purportedly abusing its monopoly position and again doing so to the detriment of European users. Now Apple is saying more specifically that the DMA is failing to achieve the price cuts for consumers that it set out to do. A new study examined App Store prices before and after Apple lower its fees to developers, and saw practically no difference. Continue Reading on AppleInsider | Discuss on our Forums

Apple says study proves the EU is wrong about lowering app prices Apple’s opposition to the EU’s Digital Markets Act (DMA) antitrust legislation took a turn back in September when the company started arguing that the law should be repealed. It also suggested that more new features would be delayed for EU customers, and perhaps even new hardware.
The company is now claiming a new study proves that the DMA fails to live up to one of its core promises: reducing app prices …

EU's Digital Markets Act Failed to Lower App Store Prices, Apple-Commissioned Study Says Apple today shared a study commissioned from Analysis Group [PDF] that looks at App Store pricing changes before and after reduced fees took effect in the EU in March 2024 under the Digital Markets Act (DMA). The report shows that the DMA has not resulted in lower prices for consumers.
In a statement to MacRumors, Apple said that the DMA has reduced privacy and security without the outcomes that EU lawmakers expected.
The DMA has failed to live up to its promises, delivering less security, less privacy, and a worse experience for consumers across Europe. This study provides further evidence that the DMA is not benefiting consumers in the form of lower prices. At the same time, we know the regulation is creating new barriers for innovators and startups while exposing consumers to new risks.
The European Commission believes that if developers pay reduced fees, those savings will be passed on to consumers through lower prices, but the study suggests that lower fees have not led to lower App Store prices.
Analysis Group looked at 41 million App Store transactions across 21,000 paid apps and in-app purchases, comparing app prices for three months before developers enrolled in the alternative business terms to prices for three months after they enrolled. 91 percent of the time, prices did not go down, even though fees dropped by 10 percentage points on average. In some cases, developers raised their prices.
The top five EU app developers did not change their app pricing despite the reduced commission, instead keeping the additional revenue. Developers paid an estimated 20.1 million euros less in commission fees to Apple after the change. More than 86 percent of the savings went to developers outside of the European Union.
When developers did lower prices, the average decrease was 2.5 percent, seemingly unrelated to the DMA. Apple says that it saw the same effect when it launched the App Store Small Business Program. The lowered fees did not result in meaningful savings for consumers because only a small minority of developers decreased their prices.
The study says that the percentage of fee reductions does not change over a longer eight-month period, and that the Core Technology Fee paid by apps with more than one million first-time installs per year also does not change the results. 80 percent of the apps in the study did not pay the CTF.
The study was done on behalf of Apple, and it wasn't independently produced. It is limited to App Store data, and only applies to apps using Apple's services. It didn't include web or alternative marketplace pricing, and developers do have those distribution options under the DMA. A more in-depth look at the results and the data are available in the full study. [PDF].
Apple argues that the Digital Markets Act leads to a worse experience for consumers in the European Union, with less security, less privacy, less innovation, and more complexity. Apple has delayed several iOS 18 and iOS 26 features in the EU, and it attributes those delays to DMA requirements.
Live Translation was not available in the European Union when the AirPods Pro 3 launched, but it is coming soon. Apple hasn't found a way to bring iPhone Mirroring to non-Apple devices without privacy risks, so it remains unavailable. Automatic Wi-Fi network syncing is being disabled in iOS 26.2 because Apple wants to keep consumer Wi-Fi data from being shared with third parties. The DMA would give developers access to usernames, Wi-Fi network history, and more.Tags: App Store, European Commission, European UnionThis article, "" first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums

The one thing Vision Pro is great at is basically guaranteed to fail Macworld
When Apple launched Vision Pro, reviewers were conflicted. Most acknowledged the very high standard of the headset’s technology, while wondering if there was a convincing use case. What are we supposed to do with this thing that justifies the enormous price tag? What’s the killer app?
Even after the launch of the second-gen model, those questions remain. But one possible solution lies in the world of sports. With traditional broadcast technology, watching sports on TV is a pale 2D imitation of attending the event in person; even 3D TVs struggle to properly immerse you in the crowd and the atmosphere. The kind of immersion enabled by Vision Pro would, quite literally, be a game changer.
Sadly, there remain many barriers in the way of this becoming a mainstream reality, as one startup appears to have discovered.
In a detailed article, AppleInsider this week recounts the strange tale of OneEightyDegrees, a small firm seeking investment and media coverage of its Be There platform. This was designed to capture immersive video at sports events using specialist cameras located in or near the stands, and broadcast this live to VR users–initially Vision Pro, with other platforms to be added later.
That sounds like a good plan, but it doesn’t seem to have worked out. OneEightyDegrees stopped responding to AppleInsider’s emails, and the site is now unsure whether it was a legitimate startup which simply didn’t manage to secure the funding it needed, or if the whole thing was just a fishing expedition “in an attempt to secure a one-in-a-million chance at funding and to become a real service.” Either way, I wouldn’t expect to hear much more about OneEightyDegrees or Be There.
The sports conundrum
There’s a wider point here, because this odd case study demonstrates the near-impossibility of any small company breaking into the live broadcast of VR sports video. As AppleInsider explains, OneEightyDegrees never stood a chance. The startup would have had to pay licensing fees to leagues and franchises, likely running into the tens or even hundreds of millions, obtain broadcast-grade cameras and other equipment and gear, then manage bandwidth-hungry data streams to viewers.
And after all that expense, OneEightyDegrees would have run into the worst problem of all: the audience isn’t guaranteed, and will be very small at first, partly because hardly anyone can afford a Vision Pro and partly because the idea of watching a multi-hour sports event using a weighty headset is unappealing. The money you’d have to pump into the project simply wouldn’t be justified by the money you could draw out at the other end, which essentially rules the idea out as feasible for a startup. Or for any company that wants to actually make a profit.
Sports could be Vision Pro’s killer feature, but it’s extremely expensive.Dall-E/Petter Ahrnstedt
The only way this could work, in other words, is for a company to take it on as an initially loss-making enterprise that pays out in the long run. Create it in the knowledge that it won’t turn a profit, and hope that the existence of high-quality live sports broadcasts on Vision Pro will convince more people to buy one, thereby making the service commercially viable. Although we’d still need Apple to make a lighter version of the headset, and the bad news is that this project is believed to have been scrapped.
Apple itself has dipped its toes into sports broadcasting on Vision Pro, but to a very limited extent: a few basketball games and a slam dunk contest, none of them live. Where it has much wider experience is traditional sports broadcasting, from soccer and F1 to Friday Night Baseball, so the company clearly has the coffers to stomach those franchise fees; the question is whether it would be willing to commit to the much greater costs and difficulties of broadcasting in VR on a wider basis.
Perhaps it will do so for the sake of Vision Pro’s success. But I’m not convinced. Apple has plenty of money, but that doesn’t mean it’s willing to throw a chunk of it at a losing venture. And as the case of OneEightyDegrees demonstrates, there’s little profit to be had right now from broadcasting sports to Vision Pro users.

Google Announces Its Own Version of Apple's Private Cloud Compute Google this week announced Private AI Compute, a new cloud-based system designed to deliver AI capabilities using its Gemini models while maintaining strict data privacy controls, a framework that closely parallels Apple's own Private Cloud Compute technology.
According to Google, the service enables AI tasks that exceed the processing capacity of local hardware to be handled securely in the cloud without exposing personal data to the company or third parties.
For decades, Google has developed privacy-enhancing technologies (PETs) to improve a wide range of AI-related use cases. Today, we're taking the next step in building helpful experiences that keep users safe with Private AI Compute in the cloud, a new AI processing platform that combines our most capable Gemini models from the cloud with the same security and privacy assurances you expect from on-device processing. It's part of our ongoing commitment to deliver AI with safety and responsibility at the core.
Private AI Compute is built using custom Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) with integrated Titanium Intelligence Enclaves (TIE). These hardware-secured enclaves form an isolated, "fortified space" where AI workloads can be processed without direct access to raw user data. Devices connect to the environment using remote attestation and encrypted channels, ensuring that all data transferred remains inaccessible to Google's engineers or infrastructure administrators.
The system will first power new AI experiences on Pixel 10 devices, such as enhancements to Magic Cue, an AI assistant that provides contextually aware suggestions, and an upgraded Recorder app capable of summarizing transcriptions in additional languages. Both rely on Gemini's larger models in the cloud, which require significantly greater computing resources than on-device NPUs can provide.
Private AI Compute is extremely similar to Apple's Private Cloud Compute, which it launched last year. Apple's system supports Apple Intelligence features and uses custom servers containing Apple silicon chips that operate as verifiable, sealed environments for processing AI tasks. Hands-on: Smart glasses that finally look & feel normal – Even Realities G2 During the chaos of CES 2025, I came across one product that gave me the “I need to have that” feeling. It was at a small booth in the smart wearables area. They were the Even Realities G1 glasses. They were the first smart glasses I came across that I actually wanted to wear purely based on the look. When I finally got my hands on them, they mostly lived up to my internal hype. These G1 glasses were amazingly well made, had some great functionality that I used a lot, like the teleprompter feature, and seemed to be heading in the direction that I thought most smart glasses should take. However, it was still a first-generation product, so some kinks needed to be ironed out. Fast forward to today, and Even Realities introduced their new G2 glasses and the R1 bright ring, and now it feels like a whole different beast. Here is what you should know.
