What to do about my Clue Calculator app? So I’m currently working on an app I’ve tentatively named “Clue Calculator”. It’s an app that helps you play Clue without the paper and pencil that comes with the real game. So it’s a companion app very specifically made for that one game. But then Apple goes and adds new rules, specifically “4.1(c): This new […]

iOS 26.2 Side button virtual assistant settings were actually meant for Japan Apple's iOS 26.2 features Side button settings that let users swap Siri for another assistant — but only in Japan, not the European Union for now.Users in Japan will be able to select a non-Apple default virtual assistant on their iPhones.Monday saw the release of iOS 26.2 developer beta 3, which included references to new settings for the iPhone side button. Essentially, code from the operating system suggested that it would become possible to press and hold the Side button, and toggle a virtual assistant of your choice — one other than Siri.Initially, it was believed that these settings were related mainly to the European Union and its Digital Markets Act. The DMA effectively requires that Apple provide third-party app makers with the "same hardware and software features" it utilizes within iOS. However, the EU is not the only region that has legislation of this nature. Continue Reading on AppleInsider | Discuss on our Forums
iPhone Car Key Support Coming to Select Cadillac Vehicles Apple appears to be gearing up to add car key support to select Cadillac vehicles, based on backend code found by MacRumors. Cadillac is now on an internal Apple list of vehicles that offer car key integration.
Apple has supported NFC-based digital keys in the Wallet app since 2022, and vehicle manufacturers have been adopting the feature since then. Digital keys allow users to lock, unlock, and start their vehicles with an iPhone or Apple Watch using NFC.
At WWDC 2025, Apple confirmed that 13 vehicle brands would "soon" add support for digital car keys, and Cadillac was on the list. Other brands included were Acura, Porsche, GMC, Chevrolet, Rivian, Smart, Lucid Motors, Tata Motors, Hongqi, WEY, Chery, and Voyah.
Apple has now added backend support for GM, Voyah, and Smart vehicles, but car manufacturers have yet to add support. For car key to come to Cadillac vehicles, GM will need to add the functionality.
GM has not yet provided details on which Cadillac models will support car key.
Some newer vehicles from BMW, Genesis, Kia, Audi, Hyundai, Lotus, Mercedes, Volvo, and more offer car keys support, with a list available on MacRumors.com.

Everything New in iOS 26.2 Beta 3 Apple provided developers with the third beta of an upcoming iOS 26.2 update, and there are still new features that are being added with each beta that we get. We've rounded up all of the changes that Apple made in beta 3.
AirDrop
Apple added new AirDrop functionality, providing a way for two people to share files temporarily without having to add one another as contacts.
iOS 26.2 includes an option to generate a one-time AirDrop code, which can then be shared with someone who is not in your contacts list. The code allows file exchanges over AirDrop for a 30-day period.
People you have shared a one-time code with can be managed by opening up the Settings app, selecting the General section, choosing AirDrop, and tapping on "Manage Known AirDrop Contacts."
Hypertension Notifications
According to Apple's developer notes, Hypertension Notifications are now available for reading with a new API. Apps can request authorization to read notifications resulting from the Hypertension Notification feature on Apple Watch.
This suggests a third-party app can read data from the Health app, so your medical app could be alerted if you receive a hypertension alert.
Privacy
When you access your Apple Account for the first time after installing iOS 26.2, you'll see an alert letting you know that Apple's privacy information for Apple Accounts has been updated to better explain how personal information is collected and used by Apple.
Side Button
Apple is laying the groundwork for a new option that will let iPhone users in Japan choose a different default voice assistant. A press and hold gesture on the Side Button only activates Siri in the current version of iOS 26, but there are multiple references to new Side Button behavior in the beta.
The wording indicates that Japanese users will be able to select a new app to activate with the Side Button, potentially allowing alternative assistants like Gemini or Alexa to be used on the iPhone. Developer documentation confirms that it will only be available for Japanese Apple Accounts owned by people living in Japan.
Liquid Glass Settings
When using the new Liquid Glass "Tinted" option that reduces transparency, there's a warning that the Tinted option cannot be used in tandem with the Reduce Transparency and Increase Contrast Accessibility settings.
Turning on Tinted mode is able to turn off Reduce Transparency and Increase Contrast automatically. In the prior betas, there was no option to turn on Tinted mode without turning off these features manually.
Games App
There is a new splash screen that confirms features coming to the Games app in iOS 26.2, including options to filter the games library, better support for navigating the Games app with a controller, and real-time updates challenge scores during gameplay.
Alarms in Reminders
There's now a small reminder about the option to mark a reminder as urgent to get an alarm, functionality that is new in iOS 26.2. The reminder shows up when you go to add a new entry in a list for the first time.
There's also a splash screen that lets users know about the new feature.
iPadOS 26.2 Multitasking
In the third iPadOS 26.2 beta, Apple added an option to drag and drop apps from the App Library, Dock, and Spotlight into Slide Over and tiled views, restoring some functionality that was removed in the iPadOS 18 to iPadOS 26 transition.

iOS 26.2 Lets iPhone Users in Japan Replace Siri With Third-Party Assistants on Side Button Following signs of new Side Button functionality in the iOS 26.2 beta 3 update, Apple developer documentation has confirmed that assigning a third-party voice assistant to the Side Button will be a feature available to iPhone users in Japan.
Developers are able to set up an App Intents framework that will allow voice-based conversational apps to be launched directly from the Side Button in Japan.
Right now, a long press on the Side Button activates Siri, and there is no option to change that. Japanese iPhone users will soon be able to select a new default, opting to activate Alexa, Gemini, or another voice assistant instead. App developers will need to expressly adopt this functionality for Side Button access to be available to consumers.
From Apple's developer documentation:In Japan, people might place an action on the side button of iPhone that instantly launches your voice-based conversational app. People expect the voice-based conversational functionality to be instantly available when they launch your app with the side button, so make sure to let them immediately use it by starting an audio session - for example, with AVFoundation.
Apple makes it clear that the option to activate a third-party personal assistant using App Intents will only be available on the iPhone in Japan, not in other countries. To use the feature, the country or region of an Apple Account must be set to Japan and a user must be located in Japan.
iOS 26.2 also adds support for third-party App Stores and provides a Safari Search Engine choice screen during setup in Japan. With these features, Apple is complying with Mobile Software Competition Act Guidelines established by the Japan Fair Trade Commission.
When we initially shared details of the Side Button code, it looked like it might be available to iPhone users in the European Union under the Digital Markets Act. It's possible that might still happen eventually, but it's clear that the initial implementation will be limited to Japan. This article, "" first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums

Every day, data brokers sell your sensitive information to the highest bidder You’ve doubtless heard the oft-quoted saying that if you’re not the customer for a tech service, then you’re the product. That’s exactly the case for many free apps and services, where the money is made by selling your personal data to data brokers.
In the most innocuous of cases, data such as your location and known interests is used to target you with personalised ads. But in the worst of cases, that data is either purchased or stolen by scammers and identity thieves …

iPadOS 26.2 Beta 3 Adds New Drag and Drop Multitasking Functionality In the initial version of iOS 26, Apple removed Slide Over and Split View multitasking in favor of a new window-based multitasking system. A replacement for Split View was available in an added tiled mode, but Slide Over was entirely gone.
iPad users missed Slide Over, so Apple brought basic Slide Over functionality back in iPadOS 26.1. In the latest beta of iOS 26.2, Apple is further tweaking Slide Over to make it work more like it did in iPadOS 18.
As long as you have at least one app open on the Home Screen, you can drag and drop other apps into various multitasking views, including Slide Over. You can drag an app from the Dock, Spotlight search, or the App Library to the far left or far right of the display to enter Slide Over mode, or to the left or right sides to enter a tiled view that's similar to Split View. You can also drag an app to the middle to open up a bigger or smaller window. There are visual indications that let you know when an app is in a left, right, or Slide Over position.
If you already have an app open in Slide Over or two apps in a tiled view, you can drag an app over the top of one of the existing apps to put the new app in its position. Unlike iPadOS 18, the prior app stays open so you can go back to it if you close the new app.
iPadOS 26 users who missed how multitasking worked in iPadOS 18 will now have options to use the iPad in much the same way. iPadOS 26.2 is expected to launch to the public this December. This article, "" first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums

Best iPhone of 2025
In terms of power and features, the ‘best’ iPhone is either the iPhone 17 Pro or 17 Pro Max, but these iPhoned aren’t necessarily the best for you due to their high price tag. Luckily there is a perfect iPhone for everyone, with each model offering the perfect compromise of features to price. From 2025’s line up we think that the iPhone 17 is a good all-rounder thanks to the new features that bring it closer than ever to the pro models.
Here is a quick-at-a-glance comparison of all the iPhones Apple currently sells, from the ultimate iPhone to the cheapest iPhone you can buy right now. Below this section you can about how each iPhone compares in terms of camera, battery life, screen, cost, and other important factors.

The iPhone 17 Pro Max is really just a larger iPhone 17 Pro. In past years, the Pro Max version would have some distinguishing feature (like better telephoto camera) but that hasn’t been the case for a few years.
This means that, as with the iPhone 17 Pro, the three rear cameras have all been upgraded to 48MP. As with all of the iPhones 17 generation, the front facing FaceTime camera is now 18MP and supports Dual Capture, so you can film your reaction to what you are recording with the rear camera. The new design for 2025 improves thermal efficiency.
The distinguishing features of the iPhone 17 Pro Max are better battery life thanks to its larger battery, and the large 6.9-inch screen.

The iPhone 17 Pro, like it’s bigger sibling, has been upgraded to improve thermal efficiency and now has an aluminium design (unlike the predecessor which was titanium). The color choices this time round are Deep Blue, Silver and the eye-catching Cosmic Orange.
It offers slightly better performance and battery life than the standard iPhone 17.
But the big difference between the iPhone 17 Pro and the iPhone 17 is the photo and video capabilities. The 17 Pro (and Pro Max) support up to 8x zoom and each of the three rear cameras features a new 48-megapixel sensor (in 2024 the main and ultra wide lens did, but not the telephoto). The iPhone 17 Pro also supports high-end formats like ProRAW, HLG video, and video recording at up to 4K and 120fps.

The iPhone 17 is quite a big improvement on the iPhone 16, and closes the gap between the pro and non pro models more than ever because it offers a Pro Motion, Always-On screen.
The iPhone 17 also has a bigger display at 6.3-inches, up from 6.1-inches on the iPhone 16. This means that the screen size now matches that of the iPhone 17 Pro again. Other big improvements for this generation include two 48MP cameras on the rear and a new 18MP camera on the front (shared by the other new iPhones that arrived in late 2025).
One of the best things about the iPhone 17 is the fact that the entry-level model costs the same as the iPhone 16 did, but offers twice as much storage, so it’s effectively a discount on 2024’s price.

The iPhone Air is a brand new format for the iPhone and the thinnest iPhone ever at just 5.64mm thick. If you want a slim iPhone then it’s the one for you. The frame is made out of titanium because it’s durable and tough, which is necessary for such a thin product.
The other difference between the iPhone Air and the iPhone 17 and 17 Pro is the screen size, which is a larger 6.5-inches compared to their 6.3-inch screens. If you want a big screen and can’t afford the iPhone 17 Pro Max (with a 6.9-inch screen) then the iPad Air is the best option.
There is only one camera on the rear, like the iPhone 16e, but, like the other iPhones arriving in late 2025, it offers 48MP. The front camera is 18MP and shares the features of the other late 2025 iPhones.
Like the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max the iPhone Air features the A19 Pro chip, which is probably over kill for a phone like this, but will at least future-proof it.

The iPhone 16e arrived in February 2025 as a replacement for the iPhone SE. The iPhone 16e brought the Apple Intelligence AI-powered features at a slightly more budget friendly price.
The 16e has only one camera on the rear, but its a lot better than the single camera on the iPhone SE was. It also offers better battery life than the iPhone 16.

We mentioned above that the iPhone Air has a 6.5-inch screen, which is a benefit if you want a larger screen than the iPhone 17 and 17 Pro offer, but there is another, even cheaper option, if you want a large screen on your iPhone: the iPhone 16 Plus with its 6.7-inch display.
The iPhone 16 Plus was introduced in 2024 and has had a price cut since the arrival of the iPhone 17 range. It is the larger version of the iPhone 16, with the same specs and features, aside from the bigger display and better battery life. Apple is still selling the 128GB and 256GB models, and you could buy the 256GB iPhone 16 Plus for $100/£100 less than the equivalent iPhone Air.
Unfortunately this will probably be the last iPhone sold in the Plus format as Apple hasn’t launched an iPhone 17 Plus. So if you want a large screen and don’t want to spend a fortune on the iPhone 17 Pro Max, or accept the sacrifices required with the iPhone Air, then this is the iPhone to buy.

The iPhone 16 was a decent upgrade on the iPhone 15, bringing support for Apple Intelligence, longer battery life and the Camera Control button to make it faster and easier to take pictures. However, now that the iPhone 17 has arrived with twice as much storage at the entry level there isn’t a good reason to buy the iPhone 16, which though it costs $100/£100 less than the iPhone 17 doesn’t offer value for money.
We discuss how the iPhone 16 compares to the iPhone 17 in a separate article.

How much do iPhones cost?
Each year when Apple introduces a new set of iPhones it reduces the price of the older models it continues to sell. Below you will find pricing for U.S., U.K., Canada and Australia (scroll across to see pricing in your region).
In the U.S., prices are subsidised by which ever carrier you sign up with and you pay more for an unlocked iPhone. In the U.K. and other countries an iPhone can be bought from Apple off contract and unlocked, so you can use it with an existing contract or switch networks to get a better deal.

Design: How do the iPhones compare?
APPLE
Camera Control button: The whole iPhone 17 line up, the iPhone Air, and the iPhones 16 and 16 Plus all feature the Camera Control button on the side of the iPhone. The iPhone 16e lacks this button. The Camera Control button opens the Camera app and you can press it again to take a photo or record a video. The button is actually touch sensitive so you can use various gestures, such as sliding your finger over it to adjust exposure, for example. On the iPhone 16e you can set the Action button to open the camera and take a photograph, but you can’t fine tune settings in the same way.
Action Button: The Action Button features on the whole of the iPhone 16 and 17 line up, and the iPhone Air. It is a customisable button that can perform certain actions, such as turning on the flashlight or silent mode. The Action Button is above the volume controls in the same position as the mute button on older iPhones.
Dynamic Island: From the front all the iPhones are visually similar. Each iPhone has an area at the top of the screen that conceals the front camera and Face ID technology. On the iPhone 16e this is referred to as the notch. On the iPhone 17 series, iPhone Air and the iPhone 16 and 16 Push this is a smaller pill shaped adaptive area called the Dynamic Island that can display Live Activities and other software elements in a way that makes the notch a little more useful.
Camera layout: Turn the iPhones over and the differences become much clearer. As you can see from the image above, the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max have three lenses laid out in a triangle formation. For these models the flash and LiDAR scanner have been moved to the other side of what Apple is calling the Camera Plateau, where in older models they were closer to the lenses. The iPhone 16 has two lenses, one above the other, and the iPhone Air has a single lens on it’s own Camera Plateau that stretches the width of the iPhone, unlike the single lens of the iPhone 16e.
Dimensions The most obvious difference is the dimensions and weight of each phone. We’ve detailed these in the chart below.
Colors: While it’s very likely that you will put your iPhone in a case and never look at the color on the back again, the color choices available for each iPhone model is another area where there is a lot of difference. You can see the different colors on offer in the chart below.
Here’s how the dimensions and colors compare:

Screen: How are the iPhone displays different?
The Pro and Pro Max iPhones used to be the only iPhones to offer ProMotion, which allows for an adaptive refresh rates, with the refresh rate going as high as 120Hz for really smooth scrolling and as low as 1Hz. This is no longer the case: the iPhone 17 and iPhone Air also feature ProMotion screens. And is doesn’t stop there: the iPhone 17 and iPhone Air also feature Always-On displays, which was another feature previously reserved for the Pro models. As a result the iPhone 17, 17 Pro, 17 Pro Max and iPhone Air all have identical screens.
The iPhone 16, 16 Plus and 16e lack the ProMotion and Always-On displays, the peak outdoor brightness is higher on the newer iPhones as well, with the 17-series offering 3,000 nits peak, compared to 2,000 on the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus. The peak brightness on the iPhone 16e is 1,200 nits. The ability for the screen to get very very dim (down to 1 nit) while still remaining usable is also key as it’s great for use in dark rooms. The iPhone 16e is the only iPhone in the current line up that lacks this dimming feature.
The Always-On screen, on all the iPhones except the 16e, means the iPhone can always display elements such as the time and date, notifications and Lock Screen widgets without it being necessary to wake the iPhone. The screen dims to minimize onscreen power usage to preserve battery life and it will turn off should you place it face down or walk away while wearing an Apple Watch.
The screen size may be the most important factor in your decision. If you prefer a larger screen, you’ll want the “Pro Max” version. The iPhone 17 Pro Max has a screen size of 6.9 inches diagonally. The next largest screen is on the iPhone 16 Plus at 6.7-inches, and then the iPhone Air at 6.5-inches. But even the iPhone 17 and 17 Pro have a 6.3-inch display which is by no means diminutive. The iPhone 16 and 16e have the smallest screensL: both are 6.1-inches.
Camera: How do the iPhone cameras compare?
The iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max have a new camera configuration on the rear side.Foundry
Rear cameras
For many it’s the capabilities of the cameras that sell the iPhones, so it’s no wonder that every year Apple improves the camera on its iPhones, sometimes improving the tech, sometimes the software. The iPhone 17 still features a dual-camera array with wide and ultra-wide lenses, while only the Pro and Pro Max offer the additional telephoto lens.
In 2024 the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max gained a 48 megapixel Ultra Wide camera and the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus gained a 48MP Fusion Main camera, which is also a feature of the 16e.
This time all the rear cameras are upgraded to 48MP. In the case of the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max that’s three 48MP cameras, two for the iPhone 17. The iPhone Air has the same 48MP Fusion Main camera as the 16e. The 48MP upgrade across the board should mean more detail when you crop into images. On the iPhone 17 and iPhone Air the extra pixels mean you can shoot 12MP shots as if you had a 2x Telephoto lens. The 48MP images will take up a lot more space though, so it is possible to switch to shooting in a 24MP resolution.
The most impressive camera upgrade is reserved for the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max, of course, the telephoto zoom now achieves a 8x optical zoom, up from 5x. This extra lens is likely to be the reason why most people will opt for the 17 Pro over the standard iPhone 17. It offers a little more flexibility in terms of the kind of shots that can be taken, such as portraits and looming into the distance, and macro shots.
The pro models also offer pro video recording features, including ProRes video recording up to 4K at 120 fps, LOG video recording and Academy Color Encoding.
The iPhone 16e and iPhone Air feature a single-lens camera system, omitting certain advanced features found in higher-end models. However, it still delivers notable improvements over previous budget iPhones, with camera capabilities that are suitable for everyday photography needs.
Front ‘selfie’ camera
The front camera on all the 2025 iPhones, aside from the February 2025 iPhone 16e, is now 18MP, up from 12MP in the 16 and 16 Plus. The greater number of megapixels combined with a larger sensor results in more detailed images. The sensor isn’t only larger, it’s now square, which means that it is no longer necessary to turn the iPhone orientation to take portrait or landscape selfies, the image can be cropped for either orientation and can adjust on the fly to give a better framing, for example to include more people in a group shot.
This is also beneficial for FaceTime, because the Centre Stage feature can make sure that subjects are kept centred during a call.
Another feature for the late 2025 iPhones is the ability to record from the rear and front cameras at the same time, so you can capture your reaction.

Safety features: Emergency protection
Apple introduced some safety features with the iPhone 14 series in 2022 and these are available on all iPhones since. These features include a Crash Detection feature and Satellite Connectivity for emergency phone calls.
Crash detection uses the gyroscope and accelerometer in the iPhones to recognize if the vehicle you are in has crashed. If the iPhone thinks you’ve been involved in a crash, it will call emergency services and notify your preferred contacts (unless you tell it not to).
All phones offer the ability to send an Emergency SOS, and the iPhone 14 and later can do so via satellite, which would be useful if you were in an area with no signal. You just need to be able to establish a clear view of the sky, and be in a country that supports the feature (many do now). Thanks to the feature your iPhone can alert the emergency services to your location in an emergency, the iPhone will also contact your emergency contact.
New for the 2025 iPhones are expanded emergency features, including the ability to text your location to emergency services via satellite.
Durability: Which iPhone is the toughest?
Another factor in the choice of which iPhone to choose is how durable the model is. How likely are you to damage the iPhone?
All iPhones on sale right now offer a Ceramic Shield front, which should mean that the glass on the front is less likely to smash if you drop it. The iPhones 17 Pro Max, Pro, iPhone 17 and iPhone Air feature Ceramic Shield 2, which Apple says offers 3x better scratch resistance. The iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max, and iPhone Air also have a Ceramic Shield back for extra protection.
Only the iPhone Air is constructed from Titanium. In 2024 the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max were Titanium, but for 2025 the Pro and Pro Max are aluminium, as is the iPhone 17, and the 16 and 16 Plus. Titanium is more durable than aluminum, however the construction of the iPhone 17 Pro from aerospace-grade 7000-series aluminium should mean that it is tough enough. The aluminum design is also beneficial for thermal management, for which the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max uses a vapour chamber for the first time.
Despite these design features for better durability, dropping an iPhone is likely to damage it, and scratches can still appear on surfaces, so we recommend using a case. For our recommendations see our round-up of the Best iPhone 17 cases and Best iPhone 16 cases.
The other way people damage their iPhones is by dropping them in water. All current iPhones are rated as water resistant to a depth of 6 meters for up to 30 minutes (IP68). That’s water resistant, not water proof, so we still wouldn’t recommend getting your iPhone wet though because Apple will know if it’s gotten wet and it could void your warranty should anything go wrong.

Specs: Storage and processor options
The A19 Pro in the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max is distinguished primarily by an extra GPU core (6-core GPU), though it also has super video hardware to support the Pro video features. The iPhone Air also shares the A19 Pro, but with one fewer GPU core (5-core GPU).
Our tests show that the A19 in the iPhone 17 is faster than the A18 found in the iPhone 16, 16 Plus. There is one fewer GPU core in the iPhone 16e (4-core GPU, compared to 5-core GPU in the 17, 16 and 16 Plus).
Missing from the late 2025 iPhones is a 128GB storage configuration, with all models now starting with 256GB. The best news is that the iPhone 17 now starts with 256GB at the same price as the 128GB iPhone 16 used to be sold for. For this reason the 128GB iPhone 16 really looks like a poor deal in comparison, since it is only $100/£100 less and has half the storage.
Each iPhone is available in between three and four capacity options. It’s important to consider how much you need before buying because iPhones don’t have a microSD card slot that will allow you to add additional storage at a later date. For the typical iPhone user, 128GB might have proven too small, especially with 48MP images, but the 256GB starting point should be sufficient .
One reason you may not need more storage is if you choose to sync your data to the cloud. If you pay a monthly fee for iCloud storage all your data will be available on any of your devices, and crucially your photos will be stored in the cloud rather than on your device, freeing up many gigabytes of space. iCloud starts at $0.99/£0.99 for 50GB. See How much does iCloud cost for more information, including Australian and Canadian prices.
Before you decide how much storage you need have a look at your current phone’s usage (go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage) and think about how much space you really need. Read How much storage do you need on an iPhone? for more advice.

Battery: Battery life and charging
The iPhone 17 models offer a boost in battery life over the iPhone 16 series. Apple’s official battery life and charging times can be seen in the table above, but in our testing, the difference in battery life was even more pronounced—we saw battery life improvements across the range.
In the demanding Geekbench 4 battery test, the iPhone 17 lasted for 1,053 minutes, which is a 21 percent improvement on the iPhone 16’s 867 minutes. That’s ahead of the iPhone Air (880 minutes) and iPhone 16e (818 minutes). Unbeaten is the iPhone 17 Pro Max at 1,560 minutes. As a point of comparison, the iPhone 16 Pro in 2024 scored 988.
The new iPhones benefit from the efficiency of the A19-series chips and the new C1X cellular modem that uses 30% less energy.
Charging speeds are also improved with even new faster charging with a 40W charger.
We compare battery life, capacity, mah and watt hours for every iPhone separately.
Software: Which iPhones get Apple Intelligence
Apple Intelligence, the suite of AI features that include writing tools, image generation, image recognition, “Genmoji” emoji generation, and new capabilities for Siri is available on all the iPhones currently sold by Apple. The discontinued iPhone 15 and 15 Plus did not support Apple Intelligence features, even though the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max were Apple Intelligence ready.
While there is nothing drastically important that you might miss out on if you don’t have Apple Intelligence right now, it’s likely that in time not having Apple Intelligence will be more of a hinderance than it is currently. As more impressive AI features arrive, we anticipate that Apple Intelligence capable phones will become even more attractive, so if you don’t want to be suffering from FOMO then get on the AI bandwagon now with an Apple Intelligence-capable phone.
Find out about what Apple Intelligence is by reading our guide: Apple Intelligence: what is it and how to use it.
Should I buy an old iPhone?
As mentioned above, the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus do not support Apple Intelligence, so if you saw one on sale, most likely as a refurbished model, we wouldn’t recommend buying it. However there are some other discontinued iPhones that could be worth buying, at the right price.

We recommend the iPhone 16 Pro Max if you find one at a good price. It is a larger version of 2024’s iPhone 16 Pro. It boosts excellent battery life, thanks to its larger battery, and an even bigger screen than the previous generation, up from 6.7-inches to 6.9-inches.

The Pro version of the iPhone 16 is also a good buy. It comes in a super tough titanium shell (unlike it’s replacement) and offers better performance and battery life than the standard iPhone 16. The photo and video capabilities are where the Pro models stand out. They include a 5x telephoto camera, a sharper 48-megapixel Ultra Wide camera, and support for high-end formats like ProRAW, HLG video, and video recording at up to 4K and 120fps. And yes, it includes the new Camera Control button.
Which iPhone should I buy?
The best iPhone you can buy right now is the iPhone 17 Pro or iPhone 17 Pro Max, depending on whether you want a larger display or not.
The iPhone 17 is much better value, though. It includes many of the features that used to set the iPhone and iPhone Pro apart, such as the ProMotion display. If you choose that iPhone you are giving up is the 8x telephoto camera and some high-end video features.
You could save money and opt instead for an iPhone 16e, which might appeal if you are on a tight budget. We think that the iPhone 16e is a good option if you don’t mind forgoing the additional cameras, and a much better option than the iPhone 16, which we feel is overpriced now in comparison to the iPhone 17.
Once you have chosen your new iPhone be sure to read our iPhone setup guide.
How to buy an iPhone
On contract
The two most common ways to buy an iPhone are SIM-free from Apple itself or a third-party reseller (which is where the pricing information throughout this information fits in, because you’ll be paying upfront for the phone, you will own it, and you will then need to pay for a SIM-only contract for minutes, texts and data), or buying an iPhone on contract.
A contract usually starts with an upfront payment that will vary depending on the iPhone model you go for and also how much you’ll be paying each month. That upfront payment is followed by monthly payments, normally for a total of 24 months, after which you own the phone (in most cases). Those monthly payments also cover data, minutes and texts.
The following networks are worth checking for their contract offers:
AT&T
Sprint
T-Mobile
Verizon
Optimum Mobile
Boost Infinite
U.K. readers can find iPhone contracts from the following networks:
O2
EE
Vodafone
Three
Tesco Mobile
Sky Mobile
Virgin Mobile
And from the following third-party resellers:
Carphone Warehouse
Mobiles.co.uk

Using the iPhone Upgrade Program
Apple offers a scheme called the iPhone Upgrade Program, which works with your carrier and starts at $39.50/£42.95 per month. You can then upgrade to the new iPhone each time one is announced, staying on the same or a very similar plan.
You should be cautious about the value this offers, but in some circumstances, it may be the right approach for you.
The scheme works slightly differently in the U.K., where this is for a SIM-free iPhone. You will also need to get a SIM-only contract for your data, minutes and texts.
You do get AppleCare+ included in the Upgrade Program, though, which is a two-year insurance for your iPhone that will cover you for two incidents of accidental damage. You’ll still have to pay an excess fee should you need to use it, but it’ll be much cheaper than having to cough up the full price of a repair.
Buying a second-hand and refurbished iPhone
You’ll have noticed that buying an iPhone doesn’t come cheap. However, if you’re strapped for cash you don’t have to dismiss the idea of buying an iPhone completely. You may be able to get a good deal on one of the older handsets if someone is looking to sell their current handset. Here are or recommendations of the best place to buy a used iPhone.

iPadOS 26.2 beta 3 adds key upgrade to Slide Over and Split View iPadOS 26 brought an all-new multitasking experience to the iPad, but it came at the cost of Slide Over, an omission that proved controversial among iPad users. It also removed key Split View features as well.
With iPadOS 26.1, Apple responded to some of that feedback and added a new version of Slide Over back to the iPad.
Now, Apple has released iPadOS 26.2 beta 3 and it gives Slide Over and Split View on iPad another improvement.

App Store Connect will not allow an in-app purchase to be added to an existing iPhone iOS app On App Store Connect - > Apps - > Your App - > Monetization - > In-App Purchases there is a message Your first in-app purchase must be submitted with a new app version. Create your in-app purchase, then select it from the app’s In-App Purchases and Subscriptions section on the version page before submitting the version to App Review.
However, on the new version page with "Prepare for Submission" status, there is no place to select the in-app purchase that was created earlier. The section "In-App Purchases and Subscriptions" is completely missing from the version page.
A previous attempt to submit the app resulted in this rejection: We have returned your in-app purchase products to you as the required binary was not submitted. When you are ready to submit the binary, please resubmit the in-app purchase products with the binary.
But the problem is, there is no way to attach the in-app purchase to the new version, as the option is missing. This feels like an internal error on App Store Connect.
The fundamental question is: How can I add an in-app purchase to an existing iOS app on App Store Connect?
Any advice is appreciated!

Don’t expect the Apple Watch to change much for the next two years Macworld
Like the iPhone, the Apple Watch is stuck in a (very successful) rut. With the notable exception of the Apple Watch Ultra, a niche variant for people who love massive watches, the watch we have today is nearly indistinguishable from the ones Apple sold back in 2018. There have been little nips and tucks since the Series 4—minuscule changes to the bezel size or watch thickness—but you’d be hard-pressed to tell today’s Apple Watch from the one Apple sold 7 years ago.
Most of the updates have been to the internal components. Faster and more capable processors, improved sensors, brighter displays, faster charging, and other welcome changes have kept Apple Watch on top. It’s the best-selling watch of any kind in the world.
According to a Weibo post from leaker Instant Digital (with a mixed record), Apple Watch is due for another routine upgrade year in 2026 and 2027. This contradicts an earlier report from DigiTimes (a source that also has a mixed record) previously claimed that there would be a big redesign in 2026 related to some new sensors. This new source claims the big design change is now two years away, with the aim of arriving a year after the 20th anniversary iPhone, which is expected to arrive in late 2027.
At this point, it’s hard to know what to believe—rumors of significant redesigns to the Apple Watch are fairly common and never seem to materialize. The so-called Apple Watch X never arrived, nor did the big change bringing redesigned band connectors. In some cases, “redesign” is somewhat misconstrued…what counts as a “redesign” ends up being a very minimal change, such as a slightly changed Digital Crown or an almost imperceptible change in thickness.

iOS 26.2 Might Let iPhone Users in the EU Replace Siri With a Third-Party Assistant With iOS 26.2 beta 3, Apple appears to be laying the groundwork for a future option allowing iPhone users in the EU to choose a different default voice assistant than Siri. Right now, a press and hold gesture on the Side Button only activates Siri, but there are multiple references to new Side Button behavior in the beta.
The wording suggests that the iPhone will permit users to choose a different app to activate through the Side Button, though this is likely to be limited to people in the EU. Some of the code snippets:
- Press and Hold to Speak is not available while the Side Button is assigned to %@.
- Side Button Settings
- Select Another Default Side Button App
- The default Side Button app cannot be hidden. You can change your default apps in Settings.
- The default Side Button app cannot be locked. You can change your default apps in Settings.
- %@ is no longer eligible for use with the Side Button. Contact the app developer for more information.
- %@ is not available for use with the Side Button in your region.
The European Union's Digital Markets Act interoperability rules say that gatekeepers like Apple have to provide app makers with access to the "same hardware and software features" that are available to the operating system or virtual assistant run by the gatekeeper. There's also wording that says users must be able to "easily change the default settings on the operating system, virtual assistant and web browser of the gatekeeper that direct or steer end users to products or services provided by the gatekeeper," which can be interpreted as requiring Apple to support third-party voice assistants at the system level.
The code is in Apple's private Siri frameworks, which implies that the change is related to virtual assistants, plus it references a long press. Apple already supports setting a different payment app to replace the Wallet app in the EU, and those apps have the ability to open when the Side Button is pressed twice in quick succession.
The updated functionality would presumably allow users in the EU to set Gemini, Alexa, or another voice assistant app to activate instead of Siri when the Side Button is held down.
Both the Digital Markets Act and the presence of region-related restriction settings suggest that Apple is planning to implement this change only in the European Union.
Earlier this year, Bloomberg suggested that Apple would give users in the EU the option to set a default voice assistant other than Siri, and it appears iOS 26.2 might be the update that adds the functionality.Related Roundups: iOS 26, iPadOS 26Related Forum: iOS 26This article, "" first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums

Apple may finally let users switch from Siri to another voice assistant Macworld
Apple has just released the third beta of iOS 26.2 as it eyes a likely December release. The update isn’t a huge one, but it does bring some interesting improvements, such as further tweaks to the Liquid Glass interface, offline lyrics in Apple Music, and enhancements to Apple Podcasts. Under the hood, however, the update revealed something even more interesting: the ability to replace Siri with another voice assistant.
How Apple plans to let users swap Siri for another option
Code hidden in iOS 26.2 beta 3, which is now available to developers, reveals that Apple has been developing a new framework to allow users to choose a different default voice assistant. It’s still unclear how exactly the feature will work, as it’s currently disabled for users, but references in the code give us an idea.
As seen by Macworld, there will be a new section in the Settings app to let users choose another voice assistant as the default. When another voice assistant is selected, it can be activated using the side button just like Siri. In previous betas of iOS 26.2, Macworld had already found evidence that Apple was experimenting with customizable controls for the side button on the iPhone.
Although the code is quite preliminary, it suggests that third-party voice assistants will also be able to show some kind of special interface on the iPhone’s Home Screen (known internally as Springboard) instead of simply opening a separate app.
For example, such a feature could allow users to switch from Siri to ChatGPT or Gemini at a higher level system, with deeper integrations.
In recent years, Apple has been making iOS more open when it comes to choices such as setting default apps for certain actions. Today’s findings align with a Bloomberg report from May, which claimed that Apple was planning to let users switch from Siri to another voice assistant to comply with European Union regulations.
Of course, the option should also satisfy users who have been unhappy with Apple’s own virtual assistant, especially given that the company has yet to deliver the new generation of Siri powered by Apple Intelligence. But again, the feature may end up being limited for users in the EU.

Tim Cook is going to retire at some point, but probably not next year Macworld
Tim Cook celebrated a birthday on November 1. He’s 65 years old. Cook has been Apple’s CEO for 14 years–the longest tenured Apple CEO–and has been with the company for 27 years. That’s a lot of years, which means people (in the media, at least) speculate about when Cook is going to step down from his position.
One recent Financial Times report (that you have to pay to read) claims that Apple is developing a succession plan for Cook, who could step down as soon as next year. However, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, who is quite familiar with the happenings inside Apple Park and reported on Apple’s future management plans back in October, replied to the FT story saying he didn’t think a change is “imminent.” Gurman suggested the possibility that the report was planted and has previously reported that Hardware Engineering VP John Ternus is being eyed as a possible successor.
As I wrote a month ago, Apple is due for a major management shake-up and the spotlight is squarely on John Ternus as Tim Cook’s successor as CEO. But I don’t get the sense anything is imminent as the @FT is claiming. https://t.co/fIGNw4VfiT— Mark Gurman (@markgurman) November 15, 2025
While retirement seems like something a lot of us look forward to, that doesn’t seem to be the case with Cook. Back in January, Cook appeared on the Table Manners podcast to talk about the role work plays in his life. He had his first job at age 12 delivering newspapers and has always had a job. “My upbringing,” Cook said on the podcast, “a lot of it was centered on work and the belief that hard work was essential for everybody, regardless of your age.”
Until these recent reports, it seemed like Cook would be CEO for a few more years, at least. But a lot has changed since that interview, changes that would make a lot of people question whether Cook is doing the right thing. There are also the challenges Apple is facing in a technology sector that is being defined by AI development, an area where Apple is having trouble finding its footing. All of that could make Cook think about stepping down and letting fresh young blood take over. It’s also possible Cook sees the changes as a challenge he’s happy to take on.
In any case, there are rumblings (planted or not) of changes ahead with Apple’s top brass. The next time we may get any actual direct insight could be at the 2026 annual shareholders meeting, which is usually held in February. While it’s unlikely Apple will make a management announcement at that time, it will be a way to “gauge the temperature of the room,” so to speak.
Apple has enjoyed unprecedented success during Cook’s tenure, with its most recent quarter breaking records for the company and topping $100 billion. Whover takes his place, whenever that may be, will have very big shoes to fill.

iOS 26.2 Adds Temporary AirDrop Access With Shareable Codes iOS 26.2 beta 3 includes new iPhone AirDrop functionality, providing a way for two people to share files temporarily without having to add each other as contacts.
There is a new option to get an AirDrop code, which can then be shared with someone who is not in your contacts list. The code provides AirDrop access for a 30-day period, with options to remove access in the Settings app.
Share a secure code with people not in your contacts to use AirDrop. You will be able to find each other for the next 30 days. You can manage access in Settings.
When you generate a code, the person that you're planning to use AirDrop with can input that code so that your devices can communicate with one another.
There are already options to turn AirDrop off entirely, limit AirDrop to contacts only, or turn AirDrop on for everyone for 10 minutes. The code-based option provides a way to create a connection with someone you don't want to create a contact card for, while avoiding having to turn AirDrop on for all people nearby.

Apple Fitness+ might get cut and rolled into a bigger Health+ service Macworld
Mark Gurman’s latest Power On newsletter doesn’t have much in the way of big announcements, but there are a few interesting notes worth bringing up. One of them is his informed assessment of Apple’s Fitness+ service, asked in the Q&A section, where Gurmen delivers information that leans more into his educated opinion than new scoops.
Apple’s recent management changes but both Apple’s Health and Fitness+ teams under the supervision of Eddy Cue (Apple’s VP of Services). According to Gurman, the shift has put the Fitness+ service under internal review, and Apple is allegedly unhappy with its financial performance. As a value add to Apple One, it has some merit, but Gurman believes Apple will likely fold Fitness+ into the new Health+ service next fall.
Health+ is a long-rumored new service that would offer new health features, some of which lean on AI. These could be new features like diet or food tracking, and an AI health and fitness coach that could look at all the various health metrics from your Apple devices and provide simple actionable insights on what you could do to be healthier, or what you might want to see a doctor about.
Gurman suggests that Apple already has too many services, and some of them don’t exactly do big numbers, so wrapping the current Fitness+ offering into this rumored Health+ service seems like a good idea. He also floats the idea of turning Apple One into some kind of à la carte “build your own bundle” with flexible pricing.

Developers can download the macOS Tahoe 26.2 update by opening up the System Settings app, selecting the General category, and then choosing Software Update. Beta Updates will need to be enabled, and a free developer account is required.
macOS Tahoe 26.2 beta 2 includes Edge Light, a new feature for video calls. Edge Light adds a border of soft light around the edges of the Mac's display to illuminate your face in darkened rooms. Edge Light is meant to mimic the look of a physical ring light.

Apple Says 'Mac Has Never Been Better' on Fifth Anniversary of M1 Chip Launching Apple's marketing chief Greg Joswiak today celebrated the fifth anniversary of Apple silicon. The first Macs with Apple's M1 chip were announced on November 10, 2020, and they launched on November 17, 2020, which is five years ago as of today.
"Hard to believe it's been five years since Apple silicon transformed the Mac," said Joswiak, in a social media post. "The performance, battery life, new designs, amazing features, and user creativity it unlocked have been remarkable. The impact has been profound, and the Mac has never been better!"
After years of rumors, Apple unveiled its plan to transition the entire Mac lineup from Intel processors to its own custom-designed chips at WWDC in June 2020. Later that year saw the release of the first three Mac models powered by Apple silicon, including a 13-inch MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, and Mac mini.
Apple had plenty of experience after a decade of making custom iPhone and iPad chips.
The company promised, and delivered, industry-leading performance per watt for Macs. This feat allowed it to remove the fan inside the MacBook Air, given the improved power efficiency resulted in less heat being generated in the thin laptop.
Apple said macOS Tahoe is the final macOS release that will support Intel-based Macs.Tags: Apple Silicon, Greg JoswiakThis article, "" first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums

The Mac Pro is essentially dead Macworld
If you’re the type of power user who’s been keeping an eye on the next Mac Pro upgrade, it’s time to make other plans. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reports that the Mac Pro is basically dead, as Apple has “largely written off” its desktop tower and believes its target audience is served by the Mac Studio.
That news isn’t so surprising, considering how Apple has handled the Mac Pro in the past decade. When the Mac Pro debuted in 2006 with an Intel CPU, it was regularly upgraded on a one- or two-year basis until Apple decided to think different and released the cylindrical Mac Pro in 2013. That Mac got incremental upgrades, but its design created limitations on the upgrades it can receive.
The company eventually switched back in 2013 to the tower design it still uses today, but also adopted an upgrade strategy so intermittent that customers were left wondering when or if the Mac Pro would get an Apple silicon chip. It eventually did, but it was the last Mac to get an M-series chip, the M2 Ultra, which it still has today.
Apple wants to grow its Mac market share, according to past reports, and the company has big plans for the Mac next year. So if that’s the goal, why isn’t the Mac Pro part of it? Apparently, the Mac Pro sells in such low volume that the costs to develop it aren’t worth it. An argument can be made that the customer who wants a Mac Pro doesn’t really care about the CPU speed but rather needs PCI expansion slots. Therefore, they don’t upgrade regularly, and some may even still be using Intel-based Mac Pros.
That means the Mac Studio is truly at the top of Apple’s Mac performance chart. It fits the bill when it comes to speed, and it is expandable to a certain extent with external Thunderbolt devices. Of course, you can’t upgrade the CPU, GPU, or RAM after purchase, but that’s true of any Mac, including the Mac Pro. An earlier report claimed that Apple delayed the M5 Pro and M5 Max chips due to a new design that separates the CPU and GPU, which could allow for great user customization at the time of purchase.
Gurman also reported that the M4 Ultra chip is no longer in development, the processor that was once rumored to debut in the Mac Pro. Could Apple be taking a two-year approach with its M-series Ultra chip? The most current Ultra is the M3 Ultra, which is Apple’s fastest chip and available in the highest-end Mac Studio, so it seems likely. And if you’re a Mac Pro user, you might want to start thinking smaller.

Tim Cook Might Not Fully Retire After Stepping Down as Apple CEO — Here's Why On Friday, the Financial Times reported that Apple is preparing for Tim Cook to step down as CEO as soon as next year, but he might not fully retire. Instead, it is possible that he will become the next chairman of Apple's board of directors.
Apple's current chairman is Arthur D. Levinson, who turned 75 on March 31. Apple has a policy that states that its directors generally may not stand for re-election after age 75, so Levinson has reached that age limit ahead of Apple's next shareholder meeting, which is when he would otherwise be up for re-election next.
Here is the exact wording of the policy, from Apple's Corporate Governance Guidelines:A director may not stand for re-election after age 75, but need not resign until the end of his or her term.Apple is unlikely to name a new CEO before its next earnings report in late January, according to the Financial Times, but it said an announcement could happen early in the year. That timeframe — after January but still early in the year — would align with Apple's annual shareholder meeting, which is typically held in late February or early March.
There is one potential wrinkle: Apple typically releases the proxy materials for a shareholder meeting in mid-January, and that filing would need to indicate that Cook is up for election as chairman. That would be before Apple's next earnings report in late January, so the specific timing of how this might all play out remains to be seen.
If this theory does prove to be accurate, Apple could announce that Levinson is leaving the board due to the age policy, and that Cook will succeed him as chairman. Apple would likely say this move was part of its long-planned succession plan.
At 65, Cook could serve as chairman for up to a decade, before the age policy applies to himself.
In this scenario, it is unclear if Cook would become chairman or executive chairman. In the former role, he would focus more on managing the board and corporate governance. In the latter role, Cook would remain more involved in Apple's day-to-day operations and decision-making, which could help to ease the transition to a new CEO.
Apple's Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering, John Ternus, is widely viewed as Cook's most likely successor when the time comes.
Daring Fireball's John Gruber and some other commentators have speculated that Apple may have intentionally fed the information about Cook preparing to step down to the Financial Times, so that the actual announcement and the timing of it does not come as a complete surprise to investors and the general public.
Cook has been CEO since August 2011, so he is nearing 15 years at the helm of the company.
This is only one possibility for Apple's succession plans. Alternatively, the company could opt to exempt Levinson from the age policy, as it did for now-77-year-old director Ron Sugar last year. Apple could also elect someone other than Cook as chairman. However, with Cook having reached the typical retirement age of 65, and Levinson having reached the policy age of 75, the stars might align for Cook to become Apple's next chairman.Tag: Tim CookThis article, "" first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums

Apple just released a surprise new iMessage app gamers are gonna love Macworld
While it looks like Apple may be done releasing new hardware in 2025, it’s still hard at work on new software. Still to come before the end of the year is iOS 26.2, and over the weekend, Apple dropped a surprise in the App Store for iPhone users.
Building off the popular Apple Arcade game, Sneaky Sasquatch, Apple has released the Sneaky Sasquatch Sticker Pack with some 60 stickers to send via iMessage. The pack includes variations on classic emoji in the Sasquatch style, as well as numerous in-game references.
Apple acquired RAC7, the 2-person studio that created Sneaky Sasquatch, earlier this year, but this is the first independent release under Apple’s ownership. In October, the game received an update that brought a new farming region with crops and tractors.
Back when the feature launched for iMessage back in iOS 10, Apple released several sticker packs, including a Classic Mac pack with iOS 9-stylized icons, but it hasn’t delivered anything new in nearly a decade.

Major Apple Watch Redesign Won't Arrive Until 2028, Claims Leaker Next year's Apple Watch lineup will not include any major design changes, with a redesign not expected before 2028, according to the leaker Instant Digital.
In a Weibo post in Chinese (machine translated), the leaker said Apple's watch 2026 lineup would not look significantly different, and suggested Apple would not reveal a new design until the year after the release of its 20th anniversary iPhone, expected in late 2027.
The claim puts a dampener on expectations that Apple is readying a major Apple Watch redesign next year.
In August, DigiTimes reported that at least one new model launching in 2026 would have "significant" changes to its exterior design that would be related to new sensors. This led to speculation that the changes could be linked to Apple's development of noninvasive blood glucose monitoring technology, but the Apple Watch feature is still believed to be a few years away while Apple works on further miniaturization.
Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reported long ago on the possibility of a redesigned Apple Watch with a thinner case and a magnetic band system. While the Apple Watch Series 10 debuted a thinner case, no magnetic band has materialized, and there were no additional design changes in the Series 11 released earlier this year.
Leaked Apple code has suggested the company is experimenting with biometric authentication in the form of Touch ID for 2026's Apple Watch lineup, but it's possible that could be an under-screen implementation which doesn't change the watch's outward appearance.

Apple hit with massive fine over Apple Watch dispute Macworld
Apple has suffered a major defeat in its long-term legal dispute with the medtech firm Masimo and has been ordered to pay $634 million in damages.
As the Daily Journal reports, a federal jury agreed that the latter company’s pulse-oximetry patent was infringed by a feature in some Apple Watches. Apple had argued that damages should be in the $3m to $6m range, whereas Masimo had asked for between $634M and $749M.
As part of the verdict, jurors decided that certain Apple Watch models can legally be classed as “patient monitors,” a question which was crucial to the patent-infringement claims. Apple had argued that its smartwatches don’t meet that definition because they don’t provide continuous monitoring, but Masimo argued that the Cupertino company embraced this definition in practice, if not in its marketing verbiage.
The dispute has been running for years. Back in 2020, Masimo complained of employee poaching and patent infringement in the Apple Watch Series 4 and 5, which was later expanded to include the Series 6, and eventually the 7, 8, 9, and Ultra models. Last year, the U.S. International Trade Commission blocked sales of the Series 9 and Ultra 2, and Apple was obliged to software-block their blood-oxygen sensors. The feature was eventually restored in August of this year, but in a modified and arguably less useful form.
Apple has issued a statement indicating that it intends to appeal the verdict.
“We disagree with today’s decision, which we believe is contrary to the facts,” the statement reads. “Masimo is a medical device company that does not sell any products to consumers. Over the past six years, they have sued Apple in multiple courts and asserted over 25 patents, the majority of which have been found to be invalid. The single patent in this case expired in 2022, and is specific to historic patient monitoring technology from decades ago.”

The ultimate way to convert an old iMac into a Studio Display Way back in 2009, Apple added a very handy feature to iMacs, allowing them to be used as a monitor for another Mac – typically a MacBook. If you want to do the same with later iMacs, there is an app for that, as we outlined last year. But Quinn Nelson at Snazzy Labs opted instead for the ultimate conversion …

X Launches 'Chat' Encrypted Direct Messaging Service X has launched Chat, an end-to-end encrypted (E2EE) replacement for its existing direct messaging service.
Chat is rolling out on iOS now via the X app, and it includes support for video and voice calls, disappearing messages, and file sharing, as well as the ability to edit and delete previously sent messages.
Any old messages should be carried across to Chat from the old DM system on X (formerly Twitter). Users also have options to block screenshots and get notified of attempts to take them. However, it's worth noting that the E2EE support doesn't encrypt message metadata, and this can include information about the sender as well as the recipient.
X also says that its system lacks safeguards against man-in-the-middle attacks, meaning an encrypted chat could be intercepted without either participant realizing it. So a determined insider or even X itself, acting under legal obligation, could theoretically access a conversation without triggering any warning to the sender or recipient. The company added that it is developing tools to let users confirm the integrity of their encrypted exchanges.
X has been previewing its new chat tools for months, launching an early version of encrypted messaging earlier this year before pausing it in May to resolve undisclosed issues. A voice memo feature for users to exchange audio messages is currently being developed, and an Android version is apparently coming soon.
