Macworld Over the past couple of weeks, Apple, Macworld, and everyone else in the tech sphere spent time celebrating the company’s 50th anniversary, looking back at not just the company’s rich history, but also our own past and how Apple has played a part in it. It’s been a blast, but now it’s time to get down to business. As you read this article, Apple is now 50 years and five days old (and counting). I point that out because, as die-hards know, Apple is more interested in looking forward than looking back. So, now that we’ve had time to recover from all the revelry, it’s time to get ready for the next 50 years of Apple. And it’s set to get off to a really fast start. While the MacBook Neo might have come in just under the wire, in June, Apple will preview the much-awaited Sri overhaul that is expected to ship with version 27 of its operating systems. As we all know (perhaps begrudgingly), AI is the future of tech, and Apple has stumbled and bumbled its Apple Intelligence plan. But AI is going to be what drives Apple (and all tech companies) over the next 50 years, so it needs to get on track. That’ll start at WWDC26. Once the AI issue is settled, Apple will shift to hardware releases, and it’ll be more than the usual iPhones and Macs. In September, Apple is expected to release its first folding iPhone, also certain to be its most expensive iPhone ever. While all eyes will be on how Apple executes the hardware, the real key will be with the software and how Apple will enhance iOS so it can take advantage of the new form factor. After that, perhaps in October, Apple will reportedly release a product we thought we’d never see: a touchscreen MacBook Pro. It’ll be dramatically different, and we’ll be looking for hints at WWDC26, if we can read between the lines (or in this case, code) of macOS 27. Besides the touchscreen, the MacBook Pro is going to see a design overhaul in an effort to further differentiate the laptop from the MacBook Air and MacBook Neo. Reports also say that Apple is planning to finally release the long-reported smart home hub, or HomePad, which would act as a central station for a smart home. This product relies on Siri, so again, WWDC26 could tell us a lot of what’s going on here. But the smart home market is a place where Apple could make a major part of its next 50 years. That’s just what we could see by the end of 2026. They’re extremely important products, because they form the basis of what Apple can do in the upcoming years and into the next 50. The OneAdaptr OneGo has dimensions of 4.7 x 2.8 x 0.94 inches (120 x 70 x 24mm) and a weight of 7.8oz (220g). The M10 is noticeably longer than both those alternatives but about the same width a little slimmer, with around the same weight. Aulumu The silver-gray metallic case looks cool, as do the five indicator LEDs and the glowing light that changes color depending on what it’s doing. When charging, it pulses orange. When being charged itself, it’s more of a cool blue. The 6.3-inch (160mm) USB-C cable means you won’t have to carry around a spare cable if you want to charge faster using a wired connection. It fits into a secure notch making it a handy carry cable that you can hold or attach to another object such as your belt to backpack. The battery-life indicator is made up of five easily visible LEDs, compared to the usual four. The more LEDs the more accurate picture you have of how much power is left in the battery pack. For a four-LED display each represents 25% so is only accurate to that degree, The M10’s five mean you know within 20% what the remaining charge is. A digital display—seen with some power banks such as the Kuxiu S3—gives the most accurate reading down to a single-figure percentage. Simon Jary Old-school wireless speeds While the look is futuristic the charging speeds are a bit yesterday, so space-age in a retro rather than futuristic way. While some magnetic power banks are now rated at 25W charging power (Qi2.2), the Aulumu M10 is “MagSafe Compatible” so only 7.5W compared to the now normal 15W certified-MagSafe or Qi2. In its specs it claims a 15W maximum but for iPhones an uncertified rating means it will drop to 7.5W. We’d expect 15W as a minimum these days, but that elevel of power/speed is important only if you are in a real hurry. The low power output means it will take longer to charge an iPhone: around 90 minutes compared to 15W’s 45 minutes or 25W’s approximate 30 minutes. Aulumu If you’re not in a rush, this doesn’t matter at all, but if you need to quickly recharge your iPhone look at our other best magnetic iPhone power bank reviews—or use the 35W USB-C cable direct to the iPhone (if iPhone 15 or later) as shown above. Wired charging beats even 25W wireless and is certainly speedier than 7.5W wireless. The Apple Watch charger on the other side is rated at 2.5W, so won’t fast-charge your Watch like some of the best Apple Watch chargers that can output 5W to the Watch. When using all three outputs—wireless iPhone and Watch plus cable—at the same time, total output is 15W. Aulumu Performance The Aulumu M10 has a 10000mAh (milliamp) battery, rated at 36Wh (watt hours). In our tests using an iPhone 16 Pro, it scored 158%—meaning it completely recharged the depleted iPhone once and then again to 58% on the second charge once the iPhone had run dry again. Compared to other 10K magnetic power banks this score is not the lowest (around 140%) but also not the highest (190%), with the average being about 170%. That said, those are iPhone-only power banks without the added Apple Watch-charging module. Anyone whose Watch has died during the day will thank themselves for buying a dual-device power bank when it’s needed, rather than carrying an individual Apple Watch power bank or just losing all those Activity points while out and about. Using the 35W cable we recharged a spent 14-inch MacBook Pro to 45%, which is about the average for a 10K power bank—and again a useful tool for any tech traveler. Macworld The biggest Apple event in April is definitely the company’s 50th anniversary. We have a lot of features related to the event, which was officially on Wednesday, April 1. Other than the possibility of some M5 Mac refreshes and maybe an overdue Apple TV update, there’s not much else expected in April. The OS 26.5 updates will continue their beta tests, with a small chance of going into wide release late in the month. But we no longer expect any sort of Siri overhaul until the OS 27 releases later this year, leaving precious little in the OS 26 updates. There will be new Apple TV shows and Apple Arcade games, of course. But when it comes to new hardware, again, all eyes are now on WWDC in June rather than April or May. New hardware releases Though they were announced in March, the AirPods Max 2 only started to ship at the start of April. The new model takes the existing AirPods Max hardware (including the same colors) and upgrades the audio processor from the H1 to the H2, bringing with it some new features and improvements to noise cancellation. However, there’s a lot of other hardware still rumored to arrive in the first half of 2026, any of which could arrive this month: M5 Mac mini: Apple updated its M4 laptops to M5 processors, but its desktops still run M4 chips. The Mac mini is already low on stock or sold out everywhere, so it’s probably first in line to get an update. M5 Ultra Mac Studio: Now that the Mac Pro is retired, the Mac Studio takes the crown as Apple’s fastest and most powerful desktop Mac. Apple is expected to update the current model with an M5 Ultra chip, which will bring a significant performance boost over the M3 Ultra. That might not arrive until WWDC, though. M5 iMac: Like the other desktop Macs, the iMac also still has an M4 processor. However, Apple has skipped iMac generations before, most recently with the M2, so it’s possible it doesn’t get an update until the M6. Other products are seemingly close to release, but are waiting on the new Siri: a new Apple TV 4K, new HomePod mini, and a smart home hub many are calling “HomePad.” All of these products are dependent on new Siri capabilities that are nearly two years late, and with all the new Siri features now seemingly bumped back to the OS 27 releases this fall, these products might sit on the back burner until the fall. Apps and software updates The beta testing period for iOS 26.5 (and other 26.5 releases) has begun, and still no sign of the new Siri, even in a limited capacity. There are very few new features in the OS 26.5 releases so far—more RCS encryption testing and support for ads in Maps—and we don’t have big expectations for the final release. It will most likely arrive in early May, though it could arrive in late April. Services Apple TV+ Here are the shows, series, and movies we expect to release on Apple TV+ in April. 11 days ago Apple launched device-level age restrictions in the U.K. There were some glitches, reports the blog 9to5Mac. For me, the experience was an entirely painless one, taking less than 30 seconds. All I had to do was tap a confirm and continue button, and Apple told me that the length of time I'd had an Apple account was used to confirm that I'm 18+. Others, however, experienced difficulties with the process timing out or failing to complete. We summarized some of the steps you can take to try to address this. Apple has since listed additional acceptable ways to verify your age. "You can confirm your age with a credit card, or by scanning a driver's license or one of the following PASS-accredited Proof of Age cards: CitizenCard, My ID Card, TOTUM ID card, or Young Scot National Entitlement Card." If you don't verify your age, then you'll be treated as a child or teenager, meaning that both the web content filter and communication safety features are switched on. Apple's HomePod mini today reached a notable milestone, marking 2,000 days since its introduction in October 2020, an unusually long lifespan for an Apple hardware product that has yet to receive a second-generation refresh. Apple unveiled the HomePod mini at its iPhone 12 event on October 13, 2020, positioning it as a smaller and more affordable alternative to the original HomePod. The device launched at just $99, with pre-orders beginning November 6 and availability following on November 16. Apple's 50th anniversary got celebrated in weird and wild ways. CEO Tim Cook posted a special 30-second video rewinding backwards through the years of Apple's products until it reaches the Apple I. Podcaster Lex Fridman noticed if you play the sound in reverse, "It's the Think Different ad music, pitched up." TechRadar played seven 50-year-old Apple I games on an emulator, including Star Trek, Blackjack, Lunar Lander, and of course, Conway's Game of Life. And Macworld ranked Apple's 50 most influential people. (Their top five?) 5. Tony Fadell (iPhone co-creator/"father of the iPod") 4. Sir Jony Ive 3. Steve Wozniak 2. Tim Cook 1. Steve Jobs One of the most thoughtful celebraters was David Pogue, who's spent 42 years of writing about Apple (starting as a MacWorld columnist and the author of Mac for Dummies, one of the first "...For Dummies" books ever published in the early 1990s.) Now 63 years old, Pogue spent the last two years working on a 608-page hardcover book titled Apple: The First 50 Years. But on his Substack Pogue contemplated his own history with the company — including several interactions with Steve Jobs. Pogue remembers how Jobs "hated open systems. He wanted to make self-contained, beautiful machines. He didn't want them polluted by modifications." The tech blog Daring Fireball notes that Pogue actually interviewed Scott Forstall (who'd led the iPhone's software development team) for his new book, "and got this story, about just how far Steve Jobs thought Apple could go to expand the iPhone's software library while not opening it to third-party developers." "I want you to make a list of every app any customer would ever want to use," he told Forstall. "And then the two of us will prioritize that list. And then I'm going to write you a blank check, and you are going to build the largest development team in the history of the world, to build as many apps as you can as quickly as possible." Forstall, dubious, began composing a list. But on the side, he instructed his engineers to build the security foundations of an app store into the iPhone's software-"against Steve's knowledge and wishes," Forstall says. [...] Two weeks after the iPhone's release, someone figured out how to "jailbreak" the iPhone: to hack it so that they could install custom apps. Jobs burst into Forstall's office. "You have to shut this down!" But Forstall didn't see the harm of developers spending their efforts making the iPhone better. "If they add something malicious, we'll ship an update tomorrow to protect against that. But if all they're doing is adding apps that are useful, there's no reason to break that." Jobs, troubled, reluctantly agreed. Week by week, more cool apps arrived, available only to jailbroken phones. One day in October, Jobs read an article about some of the coolest ones. "You know what?" he said. "We should build an app store." Forstall, delighted, revealed his secret plan. He had followed in the footsteps of Burrell Smith (the Mac's memory-expansion circuit) and Bob Belleville (the Sony floppy-drive deal): He'd disobeyed Jobs and wound up saving the project. Make sure you have the latest version of each app and they will automatically appear on CarPlay. ChatGPT Starting with iOS 26.4, CarPlay supports voice-based conversational apps. This means that chatbots can extend their iPhone apps to CarPlay for voice-based conversations, and OpenAI's ChatGPT is one of the first options available. With the ChatGPT app on CarPlay, you can have voice conversations with ChatGPT while the app is open, and view the titles of your past conversations. For safety reasons, the app does not show the text or images within conversations. Google Meet Google Meet is now available on CarPlay as well, allowing you to join meetings with a single tap, view your upcoming schedule, and participate in audio calls. For safety reasons, you cannot view video calls on the CarPlay interface. Audiomack Audiomack expanded to CarPlay this week. The 11th-most downloaded app in the App Store's Music category in the U.S. lets you stream and download songs, with a focus on independent artists and especially the Afrobeats and hip-hop genres. Audiomack's CarPlay app has Discover, Charts, Playlists, and My Library tabs, allowing you to listen to your existing songs and discover new ones. Top Stories Apple Preparing 'Most Significant Overhaul in the iPhone's History' Bloomberg's Mark Gurman has high expectations for Apple's first foldable iPhone. In his Power On newsletter this week, he said the foldable iPhone will be "the most significant overhaul in the iPhone's history." "iPhone 4, iPhone 6 and iPhone X were clearly a big deal, but this is a whole new design," he said. Like Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 7, the foldable iPhone will reportedly open up like a book, providing users with a large inner screen for watching videos, playing games, and multitasking. iOS 27 is expected to be optimized for the foldable iPhone, allowing for apps to be open side-by-side and for other iPad-like multitasking functionality. Apple Celebrates 50th Anniversary With Employee Gifts, Finale Concert With Paul McCartney at Apple Park Apple celebrated its 50th anniversary this week, and the company's month-long celebration that saw a variety of events around the world culminated with a major party at Apple Park. As hinted at by Bloomberg's Mark Gurman over the previous weekend, the Apple Park celebration was highlighted by a concert by Paul McCartney. Apple employees also received commemorative t-shirts, enamel pins, and limited-edition posters to mark the milestone anniversary. iPhone 18 Pro's Smaller Dynamic Island Revealed New images of an alleged iPhone 18 Pro prototype and screen protectors have emerged from multiple sources, adding weight to earlier reports that Apple plans to significantly shrink the Dynamic Island later this year. An X user called @earlyappleleaks recently shared an image purportedly showing a prototype iPhone 18 Pro with a noticeably smaller Dynamic Island. In the picture, the flashlight of another iPhone is held over the corner of the display, revealing a small circular punch-hole cutout under the display, which is presumably a relocated Face ID sensor. Apple Reportedly Planning to Launch iMac With OLED Display Apple is preparing to launch an iMac featuring an OLED panel with higher brightness, according to ZDNet Korea. Apple has apparently requested that Samsung Display, LG Display, and other suppliers produce 24-inch OLED panel samples suitable for a future iMac model using their mass-production facilities. This would be the biggest ever OLED display offered on an Apple device. Specifically, Apple asked suppliers for 24-inch OLED panels with 600 nits of brightness and around 218 pixels-per-inch (PPI). By comparison, the current iMac features a 24-inch LCD display with 500 nits of brightness and 218 PPI. Design and stand The KTC 5K2K Monitor is not an Apple aesthetic lookalike in the vein of the Apple Studio Display but it’s a handsome display that’s nowhere near as plasticky as some cheaper monitors. The bezel around top and side clean edges is thin, going a little thicker at the base. KTC has even spent some time on the design of the rear of this monitor, which features an reflective black gloss. Where it matters at the front is a matte finish that reduces glare and reflections. The T-shaped stand is admittedly basic—even more so than the Studio Display’s default tilt and swivel stand. Like that one, it’s not height adjustable but it does offer 178° wide viewing angles with a -5° to 15° tilt (Apple Studio: 5° to 25°). There’s an option to attach a standard VESA mount at the back if you desire a more adjustable stand, but the KTC 5K2K is certainly more than its basic stand. Once attached to its stand, System Settings setup is simple when connected to your Mac.Simon Jary Display A 5K (5120 x 2880) resolution at a 60Hz refresh rate is excellent going at this price, and the monitor’s name is explained by its Dual-Mode setting that enables you to set it to a 120Hz refresh rate at a lower 2560 x 1440 (QHD) resolution. 120Hz will be much more friendly to gamers than 60Hz, but that lower refresh rate is fine for the vast majority of office users—indeed, it’s the same as the Studio Display’s maximum refresh rate. Pixel density is fine at 217ppi (Apple Studio almost identical at 218ppi) on this matte LCD IPS display. Brightness is great, too, at 500 nits (Apple Studio brighter at 600 nits). The KTC 5K2K Monitor can show a wide colour gamut, with a quoted sRGB 100% and 99% DCI‑P3. Color accuracy and uniformity plus tone response offer a great budget choice for office workers and even mid-level creatives. Professional photo creatives looking for very top-end AdobeRGB color accuracy and HDR video creatives will need to step up a level—maybe to consider the BenQ PD2730S 5K Designer Monitor that has a retail price of $1,399 but is often closer to $1,100 online. Simon Jary Features (or benefit of lacking extras) The high-quality screen is what matters most but a monitor usually comes with extras that often disappoint. KTC has been sensible in keeping the price low and dropping the extra features. As such there is no webcam—look instead at our top-rated Mac webcams or just use your iPhone with a mount. There are no speakers either, but there are very few monitors with a set of speakers you’d actually want to listen to much more than a system beep on. Apple’s Studio Display features a “high-fidelity six-speaker system with force-cancelling woofers and wide stereo sound, with support for Spatial Audio when playing music or video with Dolby Atmos”—yet it’s not a mind-blowing audio experience. Save your money for a separate decent sound system instead. Simon Jary Ports on offer There’s a hub at the back with a choice of HDMI 2.0, DisplayPort 1.4 and USB-C for connecting the monitor to your Mac. The Type-C port is probably all you need. The KTC 5K2K ships with a DisplayPort-to-DisplayPort cable as well as a USB-C-to-USB-C cable. As your Mac will require an adapter for DisplayPort we were happy connecting via USB-C. This also then supplies up to 65W of passthrough power to your MacBook—not quite enough to fast-charge a MacBook Air but enough to keep any MacBook powered during use. There are two legacy USB-A ports and an audio out jack. To gain data function using the USB ports, you must adjust the KVM seeing on the on-screen display (OSD). However, turning on to USB-C USB 3.0 takes away the 5K resolution option. To switch to 2K for the 120Hz refresh rate you must go onto the OSD to switch in Dual Mode.Simon Jary Controls Using a little joystick at the rear of the monitor you get access to an array of menu options, including: Display (Brightness, Contrast, Sharpness, Aspect Rato, etc), Color (there’s a Low Blue Light option), Gaming options such as FreeSync and G-Sync, Advanced (DDC/CI, HDR, KVM for setting up the USB ports, and Dual Mode for switching between 5K work and 2K for 120Hz gaming) and Input (Automatic works fine).
