Macworld Apple has worked hard to build a reputation for security and privacy: using iOS or macOS, the company has led us to believe, makes it much harder for hackers and other bad actors to steal our data or gain access to our accounts. But that doesn’t mean Apple platforms are immune to malicious attacks, and it looks like the company’s Podcasts app could be experiencing one at the moment. One reporter, Joseph Cox of 404 Media, has observed a suspicious pattern of behavior on Podcasts that’s been going on, he says, for months. The app, on both iOS and macOS, spontaneously opens podcasts with odd names and odd contents. “[The] app will open religion, spirituality, and education podcasts with no apparent rhyme or reason,” he writes. “Sometimes, I unlock my machine and the podcast app has launched itself and presented one of the bizarre podcasts to me.” The podcasts are often years old, and in many cases their titles are nonsensical and stuffed with suspicious URLs. Some of them have no audio content at all. Worse, the page for at least one of these podcasts contains a link to a potentially malicious website. Cox isn’t the only person to raise concerns. One very recent review of a six-year-old podcast, he notes, says “Scam. How does Apple allow this attempted XSS attack?” This category of attack matches the suspicious link and redirect Cox spotted in one of the spontaneously launched podcasts. The reporter also spoke to the security expert Patrick Wardle, who was able to verify the phenomenon. “I have replicated similar behavior,” Wardle writes, “albeit via a website: simply visiting a website is enough to trigger Podcasts to open (and [to] load a podcast of the attacker’s choosing), and unlike other external app launches on macOS (e.g. Zoom), no prompt or user approval is required.” As Cox emphasises, the behavior is more weird than truly troubling; Wardle describes it as hackers “actively evaluating the Podcasts app as a potential target,” implying that we are yet to experience real danger, but could do so in the future. I recently reviewed the Lemokey L1 HE, an excellent mechanical keyboard full of gamer-specific features. What if you’re not interested in gaming or are put off by the L1 HE’s garish, in-your-face aesthetic? Well, Lemokey’s parent company, Keychron, has another option in the form of the Keychron Q1 HE QMK, and it’s a superb device with quality touches everywhere you look. Gone are the gaudy key legends and transparent caps, replaced by a far more refined look and feel that should complement your Apple gear nicely. Yet it loses almost none of the Lemokey’s high-end features and rock-solid build quality, and it even has a few perks of its own. Take the Keychron Q1 HE out of its box and its heft is unmistakable. It weighed in at a beefy 1.74kg according to my scales–combined with the small rubber feet on the underside, that weight means it isn’t going to slip around on your desk any time soon. The metal case is made from 6063 aluminum, and its quality stands up to inspection. There’s no bending or flexing anywhere, just a solid chunk of metal that should take its fair share of bumps and bruises without an issue. There are two color options to choose from: Carbon Black (black case and white, black and red keycaps); and Shell White, (white case and white, black and green caps). I was sent a Carbon Black unit, and it looks beautiful in a simple, understated way. The Q1 HE also looks absolutely gorgeous when its south-facing RGB lights are aglow. There are 24 customizable presets to choose from, most of them subtle, tasteful, and a far cry from the glaring “gamer” aesthetic. Set against the white keycaps and black chassis, the effect is quite lovely. The only quibble I had with the lighting is that the Caps Lock indicator is extremely difficult to see. When pressed, it changes the key’s underside backlighting from RGB to white. Yet you can only really see this from directly above, thanks to the chunky keycaps surrounding the Caps Lock key, and you’re unlikely to be typing from a bird’s eye view. A clearer indicator would be an improvement. (Some apps display a Caps Lock icon when that button is active, so you could rely on that, but it’s not a system-wide display.) The Q1 HE offers a 75 percent layout, which features a compact design that chops off a few keys that you might not need (the numpad, the End key, and a few more). I personally prefer an 80 percent layout (also known as tenkeyless) and found myself reaching for an End key that was frustratingly absent. The compactness is also undercut somewhat by the keyboard’s weight, which makes it less portable than you might expect from a board of its size. The knob is set to sound volume by default and can be customized.Alex Blake/Foundry The keycaps are made from double-shot PBT plastic, which has a very lightly textured feel and is resistant to finger oils, so you shouldn’t see any smudges showing up (unlike what I noticed with some of the Lemokey L1 HE’s caps). The double-shot nature means that the key legends are made from separate pieces of plastic, so they will never wear off. Keychron uses a sloped OSA profile, which is comfortable in use. In the top-right corner, you’ll find a knob that can be rolled and clicked in, and it’s set to adjust your computer’s volume by default. This can be changed using Keychron’s web app (to adjust RGB backlighting level, for example). It’s made of solid, textured metal and feels thoroughly well-made. Around the back is a toggle to flip between Windows and macOS key layouts. This ensures keys are where you expect them to be–so that the key labeled Option actually works like an Option key, which it doesn’t in Windows mode. This switch is a great addition if you regularly use both macOS and Windows devices during the day. Keychron has included both macOS and Windows keycaps in the box, too, alongside a heap of extras, including a keycap and switch puller, a screwdriver and screws, an Allen key, and more. Next to the macOS/Windows switch is another to move between Bluetooth 5.2, wired, and 2.4GHz modes (note that you get a 1,000Hz polling rate in wired and 2.4GHz modes, but only 90Hz with Bluetooth 5.2). This switch enables you to connect to multiple devices at once, if you like. The Bluetooth 5.2 connection itself can hook up to three different devices, and you move between them with a quick keyboard shortcut. It means there are plenty of connectivity options, should you need them. Switch between Mac and Windows, and even between wireless connections.Alex Blake/Foundry What you don’t get, though, is height adjustment. The Keychron Q1 HE has four tiny rubber feet on its underside, but no way to raise it up or tweak its typing angle. I didn’t find it to be too much of an issue–the angle was comfortable enough for me–but that won’t work for everyone. Perhaps its weight makes it too heavy for flip-out feet, but there are other ways to add height adjustment to a keyboard. At this price, a wrist rest would be a welcome inclusion, but there’s no such luck here. While it’s a minor point, it’s still slightly disappointing. First-rate typing feel Type on the Keychron Q1 HE and you’ll notice one thing right away: it’s incredibly quiet. Keychron has stuffed it with an acoustic pad and sound-absorbing foam, wrapped up in a gasket-mount design, all of which combine to make the keyboard whisper-quiet and supremely comfortable. Any sounds that do emerge are pleasing to the ear, with a soft, creamy feel that won’t disturb your coworkers. Aside from the sound, the typing feel is incredibly important with any mechanical keyboard. I normally prefer tactile switches–which provide a small physical “bump” with each key press–to smooth linear switches. The unit I reviewed came with Gateron’s linear Nebula switches, though, yet they feel extremely comfortable in use. There’s enough weight behind each key press to prevent “bottoming out” (where you push too hard and the key hits the board’s chassis) and the resultant finger fatigue and aching. I could type at my usual quick pace, more or less without issue. Keychron includes tools for swapping out the keys.Alex Blake/Foundry They’re not the lightest switches in the world, though, and unfortunately, they’re the only ones Keychron offers with the Q1 HE. Luckily, Keychron has made the switches hot-swappable, so you can swap them out with other switches that might suit you better, but they must be Gateron Double-Rail Magnetic switches sold on the Keychron website in order to be compatible. Speaking of which, the HE in the Keychron Q1 HE’s name refers to its magnetic Hall effect switches. These actuate each key press using electromagnetic fields rather than a physical mechanism, which should help prolong their life in the long run. I didn’t have the Q1 HE long enough to be able to properly test that, but it’s a welcome feature to have regardless. The board also passed my n-key rollover test with flying colors. The magnetic switches enable some neat additions in terms of customization. Using Keychron’s web app, you can adjust each key’s actuation point so that it requires more or less force to register a press; enable rapid trigger mode, which lets you repeatedly press keys without fully letting go of them; and more. There’s even a tool to program up to four actions with one keystroke. Although the Q1 HE isn’t marketed as a gaming keyboard, it holds up pretty well during gameplay, with features like the aforementioned rapid trigger mode adding to its arsenal. You might prefer lighter switches that can be pressed more quickly if you play a lot of shooters, but it gives a good account of itself in casual games. Compared to the Lemokey L1 HE, though, the Q1 HE is missing a few gamer-specific features. That includes Last Keystroke Prioritization and Snap Click, both of which manage what happens when two keys are pressed at once. You’ll also miss out on Analog Mode, which enables your keys to work like a controller’s joysticks and measure nuanced presses rather than simple on/off inputs. That means that while the Keychron Q1 HE stands up to a lot of gaming scrutiny, it’s not the decked-out tool that the pros might be looking for. As for battery life, after 36 hours of usage, the Q1 HE went from 97 to 18 percent in Bluetooth 5.2 mode with the RGB backlighting at maximum brightness, a drop of 79 percent. It automatically turned the RGB lighting off at 20 percent, so you might be able to eke out that final fifth for longer than if the lighting is at full blast. Keychron told us the Q1 HE should last for anywhere between 35 and 50 hours with the backlighting, or up to 100 hours with the lighting off. The results I got seem roughly in line with that, although it is a wide ballpark figure that Keychron provided. Should you buy the Keychron Q1 HE? Its quiet, smooth typing feel and premium construction make the Keychron Q1 HE QMK an attractive option for both typists and gamers, while its extra features (its macOS/Windows toggle, hot-swappable switches, etc.) mean there’s plenty more under the hood. Security researchers have identified suspicious activity in Apple's Podcasts app that could be used to deliver malicious content to users, based on a report by 404Media's Joseph Cox. Cox's report describes some odd experiences with the Podcasts app that certainly suggest something untoward is going on across both iOS and macOS versions. He says that over recent months, the app has automatically launched and displayed unusual podcasts without his input. On Mac and iPhone, the app has opened religion, spirituality, and education podcasts for no apparent reason, in some cases even launching themselves the moment Cox unlocked his device. The podcasts in question often feature strange titles containing code fragments, URLs, and in some cases, attempts at cross-site scripting attacks. Objective-See security expert Patrick Wardle told Cox he was able to replicate similar behavior, but in his case via a website. "Simply visiting a website is enough to trigger Podcasts to open (and load a podcast of the attacker's choosing), and unlike other external app launches on macOS, no prompt or user approval is required," Wardle told 404 Media. One particularly concerning podcast apparently includes a link that redirects to a site attempting an XSS attack – a technique in which attackers inject malicious code into otherwise legitimate-looking websites. When visited, the site displays a pop-up acknowledging the XSS attempt. Wardle notes that while this behavior isn't immediately dangerous on its own, it creates an effective delivery mechanism if vulnerabilities do exist within the Podcasts app. "The level of probing shows that adversaries are actively evaluating the Podcasts app as a potential target," he said. The situation bears similarities to reports of Google Calendar spam from several years ago, where bad actors would add unsolicited events containing links or promotional content to users' calendars. These will be worth grabbing if you see them at a good price. iPhone 17: Apple only launched the iPhone 17 lineup in September so we don’t expect to see big discounts, other than the typical “free iPhone as bill credits over several years with a qualifying plan” deals that are always on offer in the U.S. iPhone 16: Shoppers should look out for discounts on the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus, but note that Apple has already cut prices by $100/£100. Also note that Apple no longer sells the 512GB versions of these handsets, so if you find those models on sale at a good price we recommend buying them. Similarly, if you see the now discontinued, iPhone 16 Pro or Pro Max on sale at a good price then these would be a good purchase. iPhone 16e: The price of the iPhone 16e will likely drop. This is Apple’s ‘budget’ handset so it already has a low price though so don’t expect huge additional savings. Macworld When Apple was still in the Lightning era and fought tooth and nail against USB-C, the common argument was that Lightning ports were significantly thinner than their USB-C alternatives. The USB-C connector is 1.1 mm thicker than Lightning (2.8 mm versus 1.7 mm). About five years later, Apple released its thinnest iPhone–with a USB-C port. If you place the iPhone Air next to any other USB-C smartphone and compare their ports, you will notice that the port on the Air is so incredibly thin that you can barely see its casing. This special feature is due to a new manufacturing process that Apple details in a recent press release, and which the repair specialist iFixit scrutinizes. How Apple manufactures the iPhone Air’s USB-C port Apple uses a new manufacturing process for the Apple Watch Ultra 3 and the iPhone Air. The housing of the Apple Watch Ultra and the port of the iPhone Air are 3D printed from a titanium powder. It was assumed that Apple would rely on the common method and mix the recovered titanium powder with an adhesive in order to “cast” the desired mold from this mass, layer by layer. However, as Apple shows in its press release and iFixit confirms with the microscope images, the company uses a 3D process with a laser. The desired molds are milled from a titanium block. The process was developed at the TU Dresden, the Fraunhofer Institute for Material and Beam Technology in Dresden, and the Leibniz Institute of Polymer Research Dresden, and was presented six years ago in the scientific journal Nature. The process was originally developed for titanium dental implants, which adhere better to the jawbone and are bacteria-repellent thanks to the special structure of larger craters (50 µm) and smaller holes of 5 µm on the crater surface. The laser-structured surface of a titanium implant.Nature / Fabrication of multifunctional titanium surfaces by producing hierarchical surface patterns using laser based ablation methods Benefits of the new process for the iPhone Air The new titanium surface of the Apple Watch Ultra 3 and the iPhone Air is not bacteria-repellent, but the structure still lacks the smaller 5 µm indentations that prevent the adhesion of slightly larger bacteria. However, the new components have other functions: the titanium produced in this way is more heat-resistant, which will particularly benefit the iPhone Air, as the device is charged via the USB-C port. With the Apple Watch Ultra 3, Apple points out that the watch has become more water-resistant. The new process allows for different structures in areas that previously had to remain flat. For example, the new housing has been given a rough surface around the frame so that the antenna adheres better to it. It can be assumed that the USB-C port of the iPhone Air also has this feature. The new process is energy-efficient and will save the manufacturer 400 metric tons of titanium by the end of the year. Around 50 percent less raw materials are used in production than in previous generations. The fact that Apple was able to shrink the iPhone Air to such an extent is due in part to the innovative process used to manufacture the USB-C port from titanium. This has made the component thinner, more heat-resistant, and more energy-efficient in production. We’re spotlighting a deal on the Series 10 for $120 off and recommend grabbing it instead of paying more for the Series 11. Apple Watch Ultra 3: The Apple Watch Ultra 3 ($799/£749) has a slightly larger screen, 5G connectivity, Emergency SOS via satellite, and significantly longer battery life (42 hours vs 36 hours). With prices already dropping by $100, we recommend picking up the newer model if you’re looking for a large, rugged watch. Apple Watch SE 3: Apple updated the Apple Watch SE for the first time in years and gave it several overdue features, including an always-on display, skin temperature sensor, gestures, 5G (on cellular models), a faster chip, and fast charging. With the same $249/£219 starting price, an older SE 2 would need to be around $100 to be worth it. Here’s what to look out for: AirPods 4: Apple’s cheapest AirPods weren’t updated in 2025, and we’ve seen prices falling all year. Over Prime Day, they dropped to $89 and early Black Friday sales have already dipped even lower. We don’t know if they’ll get as low as $75, but it’s possible. AirPods 4 with ANC: Apple sells a version of the AirPods 4 with noise cancellation for an extra $50, but we’ve seen them as low as $119. With AirPods 4 ANC getting a larger price drop heading into Black Friday, we could see the ANC model inch closer to $110. AirPods Pro 3: Apple just released the newest AirPods Pro 3 in September alongside the iPhone 17, so we’re not expecting the kind of deep discounts we saw last year with AirPods Pro 2. However, we might see the remaining stock of AirPods Pro 2 drop as low as $150. AirPods Max: Apple’s over-the-ear AirPods Max haven’t been updated in a meaningful way since 2020. They still have an H1 chip, don’t support Apple’s latest AirPods Pro features, and have a very high price tag compared to similar wireless headphones. If you want a pair, we’d recommend waiting until they drop under $400. Does Apple discount AirPods for Black Friday? Best Black Friday 2025 iPad deals Black Friday Week is here, and by now it probably feels like the deals have been running all month as Amazon, Best Buy, and other retailers in the U.S., U.K., and elsewhere have been slashing prices. As the sale really ramps up for the Black Friday weekend, the best deals are surfacing. But you’ll have to be quick because the sale will be over after Cyber Monday on December 1. In the U.S. all of Apple’s iPads are at or below their all-time low, including the new M5 iPad Pro, which launched in October has already received its first-ever discount: a massive $100 off. Here’s a quick overview of Apple’s lineup: iPad: Apple updated its cheapest iPad in 2025 with an A16 chip and twice the storage (128GB) of the previous model. At $349, it’s already a fantastic value, but the Black Friday $274 price puts it in impulse-buy territory. iPad mini: The iPad mini was updated in October 2024 with an A17 Pro processor, 8GB of RAM, and twice the storage (128GB). It regularly drops to $399, which is what we’re seeing for Black Friday as well. iPad Air: Apple updated the iPad Air with an M3 processor in 2024, but left it otherwise unchanged. It still comes in two sizes, 11 inches and 13 inches, and has the same gorgeous design. We saw price cuts as high as $150 off for Prime Day, and the Black Friday sales we’ve tracked so far match that. iPad Pro: The iPad Pro was updated in October with an M5 processor, but nothing else has changed. Black Friday 2025: Top shopping tips We tend to find that the biggest savings are on older models, but be aware that these aren’t always the best value for money. Check the generation of the model that is discounted to make sure you know exactly what you are buying and what it’s really worth. We’ve seen resellers switch to selling refurbished or used when the stock of brand-new models run out, so check that the model discounted isn’t actually a used Mac and therefore not as good a deal as it might look. That’s not to say you should avoid refurb models; you just need to make sure that you aren’t buying something used when you want a new model. Mac deals aren’t limited to Black Friday. We see good deals all year round, so don’t feel pressured into buying during Black Friday. How to get the best MacBook deals for Black Friday 2025: Our advice Foundry Apple updated nearly all of its MacBook models in 2025, and we expect to see all-time-low pricing on many models and configurations. M4 MacBook Air: released this past March with a $100 price cut. The base model is $999 and can be found for $750/£849 during Black Friday week. M4 Pro/Max MacBook Pro: released in 2024 and are still excellent machines. Worth the investment when it’s $300/£250 or more off. M5 MacBook Pro: released in October, but we are already seeing discounts of $200 and £200. How to get the best Mac deals for Black Friday 2025: Our advice Simon Jary / Foundry Apple hasn’t updated any of its consumer-level desktop Macs in 2025, so prices on the M4 models are as low as they’ve ever been: M4/M4 Pro Mac mini: Apple updated the Mac mini late last year with an M4 chip and a new design. The M4 Mac mini is a fantastic device with an extremely small footprint, so don’t hesitate to grab one at a discount, we’ve seen $200/£130 off. M4 iMac: The iMac has a 24-inch 4.5K display and a speedy M4 processor starting at $1,299. Look for sales below $1,150/£1,170 before you decide to buy one. Does Apple discount Macs for Black Friday? Apple doesn’t drop prices for Black Friday. Rather, it gives away gift cards when you buy certain items. For Apple’s Black Friday shopping event in 2025 it is giving away gift cards with MacBook Air, Mac mini, iMac and M4 Pro and M4 Max MacBook Pro purchases made on Apple’s U.S. site or Apple’s U.K. site. Since they are so new, the M5 MacBook Pro models aren’t included in Apple’s deal. The 2025 deal is pretty good. Macworld If you want to buy the iPhone 16, 16e, 16 Plus, Pro, or Pro Max you can get one from all the major carriers and many U.K. resellers will sell you one unlocked. Or you can buy from Apple – at least you can if it’s the iPhone 16, 16 Plus or 16e you want, the rest have now been discontinued with the arrival of 2025’s iPhone 17 series (see the best iPhone 17 deals). The only reason not to buy one of the iPhone 16 range of iPhones right now is the arrival of the iPhone 17 series, which includes the iPhone 17, 17 Pro, 17 Pro Max and the brand new iPhone Air. We compare every iPhone in a separate article. There are good reasons to choose the iPhone 17 models over the 16 models, for one, the iPhone 17 has double the storage at the entry level, starting at 256GB for £799. The iPhone 16, though now £100 less than it was, has half the storage for £699. With this in mind we only consider it a good deal if the iPhone 16 is around £150 cheaper than the iPhone 17, so less than £650 could be considered ok. There are some higher capacity iPhone 16 models no longer sold by Apple and we would suggest a deal on one of those would be worth taking advantage of. That includes the iPhone 16 at 256GB or 512GB. If you see a good price for the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max we’d also consider it, since Apple no longer sells those handsets. A good reason to buy an iPhone 16 Plus is the fact that there is no equivalent in the iPhone 17 line up! If you want a large handset and don’t want to pay a premium for the Pro Max it is the one to buy! We loved the new Mac mini design and M4 chip and there is $120 off at Amazon. The Mac mini M4 Pro version is a great low-cost way to get a really powerful Mac, and with $200 off it’s a superb saving. We don’t know when they will be getting M5 chips, but if they are, they won’t arrive until 2026, so we recommend picking up one of these deals if you’re looking for a Mac desktop. We gave them a near-perfect score in our review, but also noted that it’s a relatively small upgrade over the AirPods Pro 2, which has the same H2 chip and many similar features. The new model has the same $249 MSRP in the U.S. and a slightly lower £219 RRP in the U.K. (AirPods Pro 2 were £229), so keep that in mind when shopping. We don’t expect to see AirPods Pro 3 with more than $30-$50 off, but the older AirPods Pro 2 have dipped as low as $139 at Walmart. That’s a hard deal to pass up. The AirPods 4 have been out for over a year, but are still a fantastic pair of earbuds. The Black Friday deals of $69 for AirPods 4 and $100 AirPods 4 with active noise cancellation are simply mind-blowing. The two new health features, hypertension alerts and Sleep Score, are also available on the Series 10, and there isn’t a new color this year. As we noted in our review, we don’t think Series 9 or 10 users need to upgrade. We are seeing savings of $60 on the Series 11, which is a great price for such a full-featured watch, but with $150 off the Series 10 you might want to consider that, you won’t miss out on much (See our comparison of every Apple Watch). The sleeper hit of the new Apple Watch lineup is the SE 3, which got the biggest update of all three models, gaining an always-on display, temperature sensor, a faster chip, on-device Siri, and fast charging. We gave it a near-perfect score of 4.5 stars and highly recommend it at full price—for $50 off, it’s a no-brainer decision. At the high end, the Ultra 3 has a slightly larger screen, satellite connectivity, and longer battery life compared to last year’s model. We’re looking for at least $50 off, but if you want one, we’d recommend this $599 deal on the Ultra 2 instead. Neither update brings any huge reason to upgrade, but they’re both excellent tablets. It comes down to preference and budget—if you’re largely using your tablet for consumption (streaming, surfing, games), get an Air, for which we are seeing prices cut by $150, but if you have real work to do on it, get the Pro: you can get $100 off the M5 iPad Pro in the U.S. which is a great deal on such a new device. The mini hasn’t had a meaningful update in a couple of generations. But as we noted in our review, it’s still the best tablet for its size and a great option for anyone who values ultra portability over screen size. There’s a decent $100 off. Carriers will likely have enticing deals with trade-ins as well, but be wary of long-term contracts and terms. One opportunity worth considering is Apple’s Black Friday deal: You can buy an iPhone from Apple and get a gift voucher: Apple, $75 gift voucher with iPhone 16 or 16 Plus Apple, $50 gift voucher with iPhone 16e In the U.K. there are less limitations on the sale of iPhones so you will be able to pick one up unlocked at a discount if you would prefer to buy an iPhone up front, rather than on a contract. Apple only launched the iPhone 17 lineup in September, so it’s a surprise that we are seeing £100 off the iPhone Air. The iPhone 16e also has £100 off at Amazon: a good saving. Also be on the look out for deals (like this one from AO) on the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max which are no longer sold by Apple but would offer a good option to those who appreciate the extra camera on the Pro iPhone models but can’t stretch to the iPhone 17 Pro. We’d suggest that when it comes to the other deals you should weigh them up against Apple’s own giveaway, where you could get £60 or £40 vouchers with the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus, or iPhone 16e, respectively. For example, £100 off an iPhone 16e is better than Apple’s £40 voucher, but AO’s £55 off iPhone 16 (128GB) doesn’t match Apple’s £60 voucher deal so it would be worth waiting to see it that goes lower. We’ve installed Mac malware on a Mac with only Apple’s protections in place and while Apple’s security layers offered some protection, malware and suspect applications could still be installed if warnings are ignored. An advantage of running a free Mac antivirus product from a third-party company rather than Apple’s antivirus is more frequent updates, making it better able to protect you from the latest threats, as well as other nasties including adware, spyware, trojans, and ransomware. The antivirus engine in free and paid antivirus programs is typically the same. The difference is in all the extra features afforded by the premium suite, including the availability of customer and/or AI-powered tech support when something goes wrong, cross-platform support for all your devices, web and phishing protection, privacy features such as a VPN and identity- or dark web monitoring, parental controls, and more. The old adage that you get what you pay for is true, and if you are genuinely concerned about Mac security then it is advisable to pay for the most complete protection you can get. How does antivirus software protect your Mac? All Mac antivirus software packages find viruses using both on-demand- and always-on protection. The former examines individual files either during scheduled scans or when you decide to run one. This can take a long time, especially if you have a lot of files, and some antivirus products will hog your Mac’s processor power to prioritize the scan, so it’s worth selecting a convenient time. (See how to scan a Mac for malware). Always-on malware protection protects you when a scan is not currently active. If malware arrives – perhaps via an email or a downloaded file – your antivirus software should detect and quarantine it. Quarantining a file involves moving it to a safe folder, allowing you to decide what to do with it. You’ll typically receive a notification of the discovered malware, but some Mac antivirus products can be more informative than others in these notifications (something we keep in mind in our testing). The effectiveness of this on-demand and always-on virus protection is absolutely the most important thing when it comes to choosing Mac antivirus, but additional features may also affect your choice. Many Mac security suites now include ransomware protection. Ransomware is a type of malware that encrypts your files and demands a fee to decrypt them. An anti-ransomware feature will typically block any app from writing to a user’s home folders, such as Documents or Photos, unless that app has been whitelisted. Some apps, such as Microsoft Word, are pre-approved, and you can whitelist any that you trust. Web protection via browser plugins or extensions is also a common component and aims to stop you (or your children) from visiting infected websites or handing over personal information when you shouldn’t. 3. Should my Mac antivirus include a VPN? One of the add-ons you might find with Mac security products, although also commonly sold separately, is Mac VPN (virtual private network). For many users, these are of interest because they can mask your location and allow you to view things (like streaming series) that are otherwise off-limits in your location. But they also have a very real benefit for security, protecting your internet connection by encrypting it, which is especially useful when using public Wi-Fi networks. In this day and age we should all be using VPNs and, while we’d recommend buying a dedicated Mac VPN product, one built into your antivirus software is better than nothing – just be prepared to be nagged to upgrade to the full product. 4. What is the best value Mac antivirus? But value is perceived differently by all users: for some the best value Mac antivirus is the free one, and for others, it is the one that is affordable but includes the most useful add-ons. We prefer to consider value in terms of which is the best all-round offering, rather than the budget deal. We believe that, for protecting a single Mac, Intego offers the best value. That said, there are ways you can save money even on the more expensive products. Bear in mind that all antivirus for Mac apps are sold as yearly subscriptions, and often the first year has a hefty discount. When that first year is up, there’s nothing stopping you switching to another product and benefiting from that discount again. Alternatively, opt for a three- or even five-year subscription to save even more money – and why not: it’s not like viruses are going to disappear in the meantime and you won’t need it. Some of the best Mac antivirus products can also cater to your other devices – and not just iPads and iPhones, but also Windows and Android devices. How to spot fake Mac antivirus software? Because many of us are waking up to the idea that malware is a threat to the Mac, malware writers have made it their business to play on that fear. There have been cases of malware writers disguising their viruses as antivirus apps – two notable examples are Mac Auto Fixer and MacDefender. It’s important to always read reviews on reputable sites such as Macworld before installing any software on your Mac or MacBook. At the same time, don’t believe everything you read. MacKeeper is a great example of an antivirus program that has got a bad rap, but it’s worked hard to repair its reputation. It has gained Apple Notarization, which means the software has been checked by Apple for malicious components, and the company has garnering certification from various bodies to prove it isn’t a PUP (potentially unwanted program), including an AV-Test certificate. That said, we haven’t recommended it here, and that’s simply because we feel that there are better options available. Using a Mac antivirus product, especially one that includes tools to improve your online privacy, may lull you into believing you’re completely safe from personal and private information leaking out and that you no longer need to keep your wits about you. That’s not quite the case. While there’s no reason to panic, you should still practice caution – and there are a few more issues you should consider when using Mac antivirus, too. First, an antivirus for Mac product may upload the complete text of files flagged to the cloud, where it can be analyzed by separate tools hosted there. This practice is normal and sensible: some malware can detect when a running process may examine it, and will then engage in subterfuge. Antivirus software makers also can access their massive databases to examine files with characteristics that trigger their algorithms – certain elements that match known malware. As a result, security researchers discover new viruses, worms, Trojans horses, and the like. However, helping the greater good means you’ll have to be comfortable with trusting a third-party with your file contents. Where appropriate, we noted privacy policy issues in individual reviews. Second, this software may also rely partly or entirely on cloud-based checks of URLs, malware, and the like. Accordingly, an antivirus package might upload every URL you visit, metadata about files, signatures of files, information about your computer’s hardware, a list of running or installed applications, and more. Companies vary on their disclosure of such policies, and may not let you opt out of this kind of sharing. We note issues in each review as appropriate. Third, antivirus software makers also get a sense of what behavior is happening on your computer that’s being monitored or blocked, and may use that information for their own purposes. In some cases, you can opt out of this information gathering. 7. What virus cleaner does Apple recommend? Apple has never recommended a third-party virus cleaner, and has instead focused on the Xprotect and Gatekeeper functions found within macOS, which are regularly updated with operating system updates. 8. How good is Apple’s virus protection? It’s actually very good, and there isn’t much that gets past it in the way of viruses and malware, given its Xprotect and Gatekeeper features – but these can be overridden, and questionable software can be installed and activated if the user knows what they’re doing. Still, the protection is present, it’s updated well, and Apple keeps a good eye on things, but new viruses and malware are sent out from bad actors all the time, and this is where a good third-party application can come in handy. 9. Is there free virus protection for Mac? North Carolina has approved Apple's request to push back the hiring and investment milestones tied to its long-delayed Research Triangle Park campus, effectively restarting the incentive agreement that could be worth up to $845 million to the company, the Herald reports. North Carolina's Economic Investment Committee voted this week to grant Apple a four-year extension on the timelines originally established when the company secured a rare "transformative" Job Investment Grant in 2021. The move follows Apple's confirmation last year that it had paused construction plans and was seeking to renegotiate the agreement with the state. Under the original deal, Apple committed to invest $1 billion in North Carolina over a ten-year period, including $552 million for a new corporate campus in Research Triangle Park and $448 million to expand its data center footprint in Catawba County in exchange for up to $845 million in tax benefits if it met strict annual hiring and spending goals. Apple has still not begun construction on the campus. In June last year, the company formally asked the state to suspend the project for up to four years, noting it had added around 600 employees in the Raleigh area since 2021 but required more time before beginning major development work. Site plans filed in 2023 showed that Apple expected to build three office buildings, several support structures, and a car park totaling around 900,000 square feet. The latest vote enables Apple to delay hiring requirements until the end of 2027, by which time it will need to add 126 positions to remain eligible for incentives, rising to 1,719 by year five and 2,700 by year ten. Apple previously said the campus will focus on machine learning, artificial intelligence, software engineering, and other related fields.
