iPhone 16e named ‘Bust of the Year’ in MKBHD smartphone awards Macworld
It’s December, and that means we can expect a slew of end-of-year awards features–which is usually good news for big companies like Apple. But not all awards, it turns out, are positive.
The hugely popular tech YouTuber Marques Brownlee, also known as MKBHD, this week posted his Smartphone Awards 2025, and Apple topped four out of 10 categories. It’s just that one of those categories is not a category you want to be in.
On the plus side, there was plenty of praise for 2025’s iPhone lineup. The iPhone Air picked up the award for Best Design, with Brownlee describing it as “one of the most beautiful and controversial products of the whole year.” The iPhone 17 was a spectacular success, winning Most Improved and the overall Phone of the Year award (“All the iPhone anyone really ever needs”), and even receiving honourable mentions in the Best Value and Best Small Phone categories. And while the iPhone 17 Pro didn’t win any awards, it was also singled out for praise in the Best Small Phone and Best Camera categories, in the latter of which it was referred to as the “undisputed king of video.”
Unfortunately, the iPhone 16e received only negative attention, winning the “award” for Bust of the Year and a scathing diatribe about its litany of compromises and insultingly mid-market price tag. “So they made a smaller, less premium iPhone, basically by taking things out of the base phone,” Brownlee explained. “So we have a binned A18 chip in here. Fine. It’s also a smaller, 60Hz display with a notch. Fine. But then they kept going…”
Ultimately, he concluded that the iPhone 16e was “just a crazy swing and a miss.” (We’re inclined to agree.)
The awards, like all of Brownlee’s videos, are extremely well produced and presented, and well worth a watch. I’ll post a list of winners below, but the real value of the video is the explanations of why each phone was selected, and their significance within wider industry changes. I recommend you give it a watch.

iFixit Launches Free iOS Repair App With AI-Powered FixBot iFixit today announced the launch of a new iFixit app that's available to download from Apple's App Store (and the Play Store on Android devices). It includes all of the iFixit repair guides in a format that's ideal for mobile devices, along with a workbench that keeps track of repairs, a battery lifespan predictor, and an AI repair buddy called FixBot.
The iFixit repair app is able to monitor an iPhone's battery in real time, providing graphs of how a battery deteriorates over time. The graphs provide users with advanced notice of when a battery might need to be replaced.
FixBot is able to provide AI assistance to solve issues with smartphones, laptops, tablets, and more. Users can describe a problem with text or voice, and FixBot will provide help with diagnosis and repair. FixBot can respond to questions verbally for hands-free use, and there's also an option to share images with the AI.
iFixit says that FixBot is trained on millions of successful iFixit community repairs rather than generic information, which makes it a useful repair tool. FixBot is available in the iFixit app, and it can also be used on iFixit's website.
The app includes all of iFixit's repair guides, but it is aware of what smartphone the user has and will default to showing repair information for that device for quick information on fixes.
There are options for purchasing repair parts directly from iFixit, with the app able to check for device compatibility before a purchase is made.
iFixit did have an app that was available up until 2015, but Apple pulled it from the App Store after iFixit tore down an Apple TV developer kit. Apple said that iFixit violated the Apple terms of service with the teardown, and banned the iFixit developer account. Ten years later, iFixit was allowed to return to the App Store.
The iFixit app can be downloaded from the App Store for free, and more information on the app is available on iFixit's website. Access to FixBot is free for now, and later, there will be both a free version and a $4.99 per month Enthusiast plan with document uploads.Tag: iFixitThis article, "" first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums
Even as a Liquid Glass fan, I’m looking forward to a new Apple design era You almost have to feel sorry for Alan Dye at this point. It was pretty clear he expected news of his departure from Apple to be something of a bombshell, and Meta clearly thought their acquisition of Apple’s former VP of Human Interface Design would be perceived as a coup.
Instead, the prevailing opinion among Apple commenters appears to be succinctly summarized as a collective sigh of relief …

Apple Launches Tap to Pay on iPhone in Hong Kong Apple has announced the availability of Tap to Pay on iPhone in Hong Kong, allowing independent sellers, small merchants, and large retailers in the region to use iPhones as a payment terminal.
Tap to Pay allows iPhones to accept payments via Apple Pay, contactless credit and debit cards, and other digital wallets. All transactions are encrypted, and Apple has no information about what is purchased or the person who made the purchase.
No additional hardware or credit card machine is required to use Tap to Pay on iPhone. The feature uses NFC technology to securely authenticate the contactless payments, plus the feature also supports PIN entry, which includes accessibility options.
From today, Adyen, Global Payments, KPay, and SoéPay are the first payment platforms in Hong Kong to offer Tap to Pay on iPhone. Apple says the rollout cuts across key sectors, including taxi, retail, food and beverage, and professional services.
Tap to Pay on iPhone launched in February 2022 in the United States, and since then, Apple has expanded it to more than 50 countries and regions around the world. Tags: Hong Kong, Tap to Pay on iPhoneThis article, "" first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums
CarPlay is getting even better with these new iOS 26.2 features Macworld
Earlier this year, CarPlay – Apple’s infotainment system for cars – received a major update with the first release of iOS 26. Not only did it gain the new Liquid Glass interface, but it has also received features such as widgets on the Home Screen, video streaming over AirPlay when the car is parked, Live Activities, and more customizations.
With iOS 26.2 rolling out this week to iPhone users, CarPlay is also getting some nice upgrades that make the whole experience even better. More specifically, there are two new features that CarPlay users have been requesting for a long time that are finally on the way.
More widgets on the CarPlay Home Screen
With iOS 26.2, Apple is further refining some of CarPlay’s new features, starting with Home Screen widgets.
Similar to widgets on the iPhone, CarPlay widgets let users see brief information and even access quick interactions right from the Home Screen without having to open an app. This includes options such as a calendar widget to show your upcoming appointments, the weather forecast, or even Home controls.
Users can currently place up to two widgets on the CarPlay Home Screen, but that will change with iOS 26.2.
The update enables support for more widgets on the CarPlay Home Screen. However, there’s a catch. The ability to add three or more widgets is limited to vehicles with larger built-in screens. Unfortunately, Apple doesn’t specify which car models support more widgets in CarPlay, but if your car has a large built-in screen, you will likely be able to add more widgets to it.
You’ll be able to unpin CarPlay coversations in iOS 26.2.Foundry
A cleaner interface for the Messages app
Also with iOS 26, CarPlay introduced a new interface for the Messages app that shows pinned chats at the top. For users who prefer a cleaner interface, there’s now an option to disable pinned conversations in CarPlay.
In the Settings app, you will now find a “Pinned Conversations” toggle. Turn it off, and you’ll no longer see pinned chats in the Messages app, just the regular list of chats. For CarPlay users who didn’t like the new Messages app interface, the update will certainly come in handy.
The new CarPlay features are automatically enabled after installing iOS 26.2 on your iPhone. Just go to Settings > General > Software Update and look for the latest version of the operating system.

Did you hear about all those Apple execs who keep leaving? Good riddance Macworld
It’s been a big week in Apple executive movements. Let’s see if the Macalope can recap for you if you were unconscious for seven days (that sounds nice, can the Macalope get some of that?).
After the unsurprising news that defacto former Apple executive John Giannandrea would infacto be leaving the company, we learned that Apple’s head of user interface design Alan Dye would also be leaving for greener pastures at Meta (the green is all cash).
Breaking the news on Mastodon, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman said:
Apple’s top design executive Alan Dye is leaving the iPhone maker to become the Chief Design Officer at Meta in a blockbuster coup for the social networking giant and big loss for Apple.
Mark Gurman
This is such Dye-friendly framing that one might be excused for thinking it was written by Alan Dye’s mom. It wasn’t. Or probably wasn’t, anyway.
Wouldn’t that be wild if Mark Gurman’s source this whole time has been Alan Dye’s mom? That would be an unexpected turn of events.
In reality, few people in the Apple community–other than Dye’s mom–think much of his work, which includes Liquid Glass and a number of horrible icons for macOS Tahoe. People not really seeing this as a “big loss” for Apple include, but are not limited to, Louie Mantia, John Gruber, Jason Snell, Nick Heer, Macworld contributor Alex Blake, and this furry observer.
Apple usually has good people waiting in the wings, and, in this instance at least, we have good reason to think the replacement will not only be good but a real upgrade.
…everyone I’ve spoken to is happy — if not downright giddy — at the news that Lemay is replacing Dye. Lemay is well-liked personally and deeply respected talent-wise. Said one source, in a position to know the choices, “I don’t think there was a better choice than Lemay.”
John Gruber
Later in the week, Apple also announced several other executives changes, including the retirements of general counsel Kate Adams and VP of Environment, Policy and Social Initiatives Lisa Jackson. Adams will be replaced by ex-Meta chief legal officer Jennifer Newstead, and Jackson by a line on the org chart that is more often used on football locker room whiteboards to represent an end-run.

While many people were leaving Apple, at least one was trying to get back in. This news, that a man would like power and command the likes of which he has never wielded before, is huge, if true. Who, exactly, is saying this, you may wonder.
…Tony Fadell, a former Apple hardware executive who co-invented the iPod, has told associates recently…
Aaron Tilley and Wayne Ma, The Information
Someone told The Information that Tony Fadell said he would graciously accept the position of Apple CEO. Okay.
Just, for a second here, entertain the following: would it not be absolutely wild if The Information’s source here is Tony Fadell’s mom? Wilder still, Fadell and Dye were at Apple at the same time, so it’s theoretically possible the source is again Dye’s mom, but let’s not get crazy here and go with the single mother theory. The two-moms hypothesis seems more reasonable.
Sadly for Fadell, no matter who the sources are and how many times he writes “Mr. Apple CEO Tony Fadell” on the cover of his Trapper Keeper, he is not going to get the gig. Even The Information says he was “a polarizing figure” when he worked at Apple, and his time at Nest doesn’t seem to have burnished his reputation much as he rubbed his co-founder and employees equally the wrong way.
Well, at least we can settle down now that all the Apple executive news is-
“Apple Rocked by Executive Departures, With Chip Chief at Risk of Leaving Next”
Oh, come on. How is breaking news able to interrupt the Macalope mid-sentence in his own column? It makes no sense!
Yes, over the weekend, Mark Gurman brought a tin of cookies over to some Apple executive’s mom’s house, where she was heard to remark, “Ooh, yah, I hear that nice Johny Srouji fella is thinkin’ of leavin’, him what made the chips and all.”
The Macalope’s not sure whose mom this is, but he’s thinking upper midwestern accent. She’s serving Gurman a casserole out of a baking dish and pouring him some RC Cola out of a 2-liter bottle.
Unlike Dye’s departure, Srouji’s would truly be bad for Apple. Fortunately, this breaking news was re-broken on Monday morning when Gurman reported that Srouji sent out a memo to his staff saying he didn’t know what they may have heard from any of the various chatty parents of Apple executives, but he doesn’t “plan on leaving anytime soon”.
Here’s hoping all the remaining Apple executives take time off in the coming weeks to be with their families and don’t have bandwidth to think about leaving.

Google's First AI Smart Glasses Coming in 2026 Google is developing two pairs of smart glasses with artificial intelligence that will launch in 2026, the company said today. The first set of glasses have AI integration and are designed for screen-free assistance with built-in speakers, microphones, and cameras for speaking to Google Gemini.
Users will be able to take photos using the camera, and then ask Gemini questions about their surroundings for real-time help.
The second set of glasses has the same AI capabilities along with an in-lens display that is able to display helpful information like turn-by-turn directions or live translation captions. Both sets of glasses will connect to a smartphone, with processing done on that device. The glasses will run Android XR, Google's platform for wearables.
Google is partnering with Samsung to develop the glasses, plus it is working with Warby Parker and Gentle Monster, two companies that design eyeglasses. Google says that its glasses options will be stylish, lightweight, and comfortable enough to wear all day.
The Google smart glasses will compete with the Meta Ray-Bans and any upcoming products from Apple. Meta already has Ray-Ban and Oakley glasses with AI and Ray-Bans with an in-lens display. Rumors suggest that Apple is working to unveil its first set of AI smart glasses as soon as 2026.Tag: GoogleThis article, "" first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums

Hallelujah! Easier switching between iPhone and Android is on the way soon Macworld
According to 9to5Google, the latest developer test built (Canary) of Android includes a new feature that should make it easier to switch between iPhone and Android devices. The corresponding feature on iPhones should roll out in a coming iOS 26 update.
We first wrote about this last year, when the EU was forcing Apple to make a number of concessions around how it locks customers into its products. One was the ability to completely remove Safari from iOS and let browsers use their own rendering engine (in the EU), but another, perhaps no longer EU-specific, was a feature to make it easier for iPhone and Android users to switch devices.
Google has an Android Switch app for iOS and Apple has a Move to iOS app on Android, but a clearer, easier, and more reliable method is needed. Apple and Google have been working together on a solution, and soon you’ll be presented with an option to move from your Android device or iPhone during the device setup process.
We don’t yet know what the feature looks like or how it works on either the iPhone or Android side. But the idea has always been to seamlessly move across the user’s core accounts, data like photos and videos, and bookmarks. It’s unclear if it will go further than that—switching from iPhone to Android or vice versa means moving passwords and passkeys, contents of a digital wallet, and more. The new method is said to provide support for transferring more data types between devices than the current transfer apps do.

iPhone Users in Japan Can Now Send Messages via Satellite iPhone users in Japan are now able to use Apple's Messages via satellite feature, Apple said today. Messages via satellite works on the iPhone 14 or later and the Apple Watch Ultra 3, allowing users who have no cellular or Wi-Fi connection to use satellite connectivity for messaging.
When attempting to send a message with no cellular or Wi-Fi connection, iPhone users in Japan will see a message that prompts them to connect to the nearest satellite. After connecting, users can send and receive iMessages, SMS messages, emoji characters, and use the Messages Tapback feature.
Messages sent via satellite offer the same end-to-end encryption as messages sent over Wi-Fi or cellular.
Japanese users already had access to emergency SOS via satellite and the option to share location via satellite in the Find My app, so the new Messages via satellite option joins those two features.
iOS 18 or later is required for Messages via satellite on iPhone, while the feature needs watchOS 26 or later on the Apple Watch Ultra 3. Satellite connectivity continues to be free for all iPhone and Apple Watch users with supported devices.Tag: JapanThis article, "" first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums
ICEBlock App Developer Sues Trump Officials, Claims Apple Was Pressured to Remove App The developer behind the ICEBlock app that Apple removed from the App Store at the Trump administration's request is suing for suppression of free speech. The lawsuit names Pam Bondi, Kristi Noem, and other government officials, accusing them of First Amendment violations (via NPR).
Key to the lawsuit is a statement from Bondi, who claimed Apple removed the app after the government asked Apple to do so. "We reached out to Apple today demanding they remove the ICEBlock app from their App Store -- and Apple did so," said Bondi.
ICEBlock allows iPhone users to report the location of United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents when the agents are spotted in public. The app was removed from the App Store in early October, though people who downloaded it before it was pulled are still able to use it. ICEBlock had over a million users when it was removed from the App Store.
Joshua Aaron, the app's developer, argues that the creation, distribution, and promotion of ICEBlock is lawful and protected by the First Amendment. He claims that the government officials named in the lawsuit used the authority of their offices to pressure, threaten, and coerce Apple to remove the app.
This lawsuit challenges these government officials' unconstitutional threats and demands against Apple, which pressured it to remove the ICEBlock app from the App Store. In particular, Attorney General Bondi's coercion of Apple has censored Aaron and ALL U Chart,Inc., which owns ICEBlock's intellectual property, by making ICEBlock--their speech--unavailable to the public.
Apple is not named in the lawsuit, and is not being targeted by Aaron. When the app was removed from the App Store, Apple said that the app violated guideline 1.1.1, and made it clear that it was removed at the behest of the government.
Information provided to Apple by law enforcement shows that your app violates Guideline 1.1.1 because its purpose is to provide location information about law enforcement officers that can be used to harm such officers individually or as a group. For this reason, your app will be removed from the App Store
Aaron asks that the court allow ICEBlock to be reinstated, and that government officials be prevented from threatening or pressuring ICEBlock distributors. This article, "" first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums

Switching Between iPhone and Android Will Get Easier With New Apple and Google Collaboration Apple and Google are teaming up to make it easier for users to switch between iPhone and Android smartphones, according to 9to5Google. There is a new Android Canary build available today that simplifies data transfer between two smartphones, and Apple is going to implement the functionality in an upcoming iOS 26 beta.
Apple already has a Move to iOS app for transferring data from an Android device to an iPhone, while Google has an Android Switch app that can migrate data from an iPhone to an Android smartphone. The new method will apparently replace the existing apps, offering a transfer function when setting up a new iPhone or Android device.
The collaboration will apparently add "more functionality" and support for transferring data types that are not available to transfer with the current tools.
Both Apple and Google are facing regulatory pressure around the world, with multiple countries scrutinizing practices that might keep customers locked into a platform. Making it simpler for users to transition from one platform to another will be beneficial to both companies.Tags: Android, GoogleThis article, "" first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums

How Apple is Helping Apps Comply With Australia's Social Media Ban for Kids Australia's new social media law goes into effect on December 10, 2025, and ahead of that date, Apple is sharing information on developer tools that are designed to help social media apps adhere to the law.
Children under the age of 16 will no longer be allowed to use Facebook, TikTok, Instagram, Reddit, YouTube (except for YouTube Kids), Snapchat, X, Twitch, Threads, and Kick in Australia, and those apps have to take "reasonable steps" to remove underage users from their platforms starting Wednesday. Apps will also need to prevent new signups from users under the age of 16, and there is a one-year transition period before penalties will begin.
To assist developers, Apple provides the Declared Age Range API, which gives developers access to the age range of users. Other tools available include an option for an age suitability URL that provides more information on the app and its age-related content, app description pages that indicate age restrictions, and tools for setting higher minimum age ranges.
Platforms that don't deactivate accounts created by children will face serious fines. Australia may also add more apps to its banned list over time, depending on the apps that kids adopt after not being able to access their current favorites.
Australia is the first country to implement a total social media ban for children.

Best PDF Editor for Mac (2025): Best tools for text edits, OCR & annotations Macworld
Many workplaces and educational institutions have completely switched from paper documents to digital ones. Consequently, Mac users are increasingly dealing with PDFs and other e-document file formats.
Whether you need to edit, sign or create PDFs, we are here to help you find the best PDF editor for your Mac from the multitude of options. There are various PDF editing apps that cater to various budgets and workflows and among them are a few that stand out in terms of features, performance, and design. In this buying guide we have looks in depth at eight of the best PDF apps available for Mac.
How we test PDF editors
Macworld evaluates PDF editors by evaluating a range of common user tasks to assess the software’s functionality and ease of use. Our evaluation focuses on core editing and annotation capabilities. We examine how easy it is to edit text and sign forms, we check for tools that allow highlighting, underlining, and striking through text, and we assess creative tools like a freehand drawing pen. We also test the accuracy of OCR tools where available. We pick the best PDF editors based on the best editor for certain use case, not just the most powerful or expensive. This guide to the best PDF editors is based on full reviews of the software mentioned. We offer more detail on our testing methodology below.

Why Apple Preview is a good choice: Apple Preview, the default document and image viewer on macOS, is a surprisingly capable and free application that handles most personal and business PDF needs. While it is not designed to replace a full-featured, professional PDF editor, Preview offers a robust set of tools for free. Preview’s built-in capabilities are more than sufficient for everyday tasks, making it an excellent starting point for anyone needing to work with PDFs on a Mac.
Apple Preview is the default document and image viewer on macOS, offering a range of useful features beyond just viewing photos and PDFs.
Click on any PDF (or any image format) to open it and it will launch in Preview. Alternatively, open Preview and it will open the Finder, allowing users to browse through folders to locate the file they want to view. The app features a toolbar at the top of the screen, which allows users to view file details, zoom in or out, share the file, fill in a form, or mark up the file.
The Markup button reveals tools for selection, doodling, inserting shapes or sticky notes, signing, and typing text. These tools are easily customizable, allowing users to control the color and size of a shape or text box, as well as pick between multiple fonts when typing. There is also an autofill helper.
Apple Preview is not designed to replace image or PDF editors, but it still offers some power-user features. The menu bar’s Tools button allows users to reveal more advanced image controls, such as granular resizing, color adjustments, and automatic background removal. The File menu includes a Export button that allows users to choose the output’s quality and file format, allowing them to convert images to various formats.
When viewing a PDF file in Apple Preview, users can easily re-order or delete its pages using the sidebar, allowing them to limit the file to the important bits they need. If exporting the PDF using Preview, users can optionally add a password, quartz filter, or file restrictions.
If you’d prefer not to pay for Adobe Acrobat or another solution, Apple Preview may be more suitable for you. Apple Preview offers free tools that Adobe has paywalled, including PDF page organization/deletion, password protection for PDF files, and document scanning.

The app runs smoothly and gives you everything you need to fully control a PDF file, including edit text and images, sign, fill checkboxes, add links, redact content in multiple ways, insert shapes, highlight text, doodle, and even measure the distance between two points or calculate specific areas.

Why Wondershare PDFelement is a good choice: Wondershare PDFelement is a capable PDF editor that offers a compelling alternative to other options on the market, particularly for users with specific needs and budgets thanks to its a rich feature set and flexible pricing.
Wondershare’s PDFelement is a document manipulation tool that offers essential features on all platforms at a reasonable price. The app features a minimalistic user interface and offers single- and cross-platform licenses, with the main difference being app updates. If you plan to use the PDF editor on your Mac exclusively, you can opt for a one-year, two-year, or lifetime license. PDFelement also supports iOS, iPadOS, Windows, Android, and the web, offering an all-encompassing bundle that supports all of these platforms.
The single-platform licenses include 20GB of cloud storage, while the highlighted bundles offer 100GB. Once you run out of the 20,000 AI tokens included with your purchase, you can buy more. PDFelement features a clean home page showcasing standard PDF editing tools, such as PDF conversion, optical character recognition (OCR), template selection, file compression, and more. It also has a sidebar that grants access to handy destinations like recent files, cloud documents, tagged PDFs, and agreements you’ve sent others to sign.
PDFelement supports most commonly needed PDF editing functionalities, including text manipulation, image and URL insertion, adding, deleting, and editing the document’s pages. It’s not the most advanced selection out there, but it gets the job done in casual workflows. PDFelement is better suited for annotation and artificial intelligence needs, allowing users to insert text, shapes, comments, stamps, forms, checkboxes, text callouts, and more. It can also automatically bookmarks reflecting the document’s chapters.
Beyond text manipulation, PDFelement can redact text, add a password to the file, convert the PDF to a Microsoft Office format, change the pages’ background, compress the size, and insert a watermark. While not the most feature-rich PDF editor, it caters to casual users seeking a lightweight solution.
Despite its minimalism, getting used to PDFelement may take some time. The unlabeled buttons in the editor’s sidebar can be confusing and challenging to identify, and some features, like text editing, can sometimes be unpredictable. PDFelement is an excellent PDF editor for those with casual needs, but its tools aren’t as advanced as those offered by many rival apps.

Why Foxit PDF Editor is a good choice: Foxit PDF Editor is a strong competitor to Acrobat, Foxit is packed with business-ready features and uses a familiar Microsoft Office-style interface. It offers different plans, with the Editor+ version including AI-assisted tools and eSign capabilities.
Foxit offers a range of PDF-centric solutions for Mac users, including PDF Reader and PDF Editor. PDF Reader is available on macOS for free, allowing users to view, annotate, sign, and have AI analyze their documents. The paid-for PDF Editor unlocks the complete editing toolbox for an annual fee, with a base plan and a plus (+) plan that includes more features. There are options to pay monthly, but it is still an annual contract: there’s no option to cancel after a month.
The free PDF Reader allows users to control the size, color, and style of inserted text or shapes, as well as customize features like changing the document’s background shade, reversing and rotating pages, signing forms, and more. It can read text aloud, measure distances, calculate areas, magnify selected spots, and have AI analyze your document.
The paid-for PDF Editor supports all of PDF Reader’s features but adds editing functionalities, such as file conversion, optical character recognition (OCR), and full manipulation of a document’s text and images through addition, deletion, or tweaking. It caters to power users with advanced features like document sanitization, redaction styles, security layers, JavaScript, and accessibility checks.
Foxit’s PDF Editor stands out for its ChatGPT integration, which can analyze and summarize documents and perform actions on your behalf. The base plan should suffice for most users, while the Plus plan offers exclusives like mobile app access, tracking other parties’ signatures, smart redaction, 130GB of cloud storage, and template support.
While the app is generally swift, the user interface may seem too packed to some users, especially those who don’t need all the offered tools. Foxit PDF Editor is designed for serious users rather than casual users, and if the UI overwhelms you, it may be an overkill for you.

Why Adobe Acrobat Studio is a good choice: Adobe Acrobat offers a range of products from a free online editor to the paid Standard and Pro versions. The Pro version is the most feature-rich, including advanced tools like version comparison and web form creation, but it is also one of the more expensive options.
In 2025 Adobe introduced Acrobat Studio, which combines the Acrobat Pro features with Adobe Express premium and adds AI tools.
Adobe Acrobat Studio marks a major step in making PDFs more intelligent and interactive — combining traditional PDF editing tools with AI-powered document analysis and collaboration features. At its core is “PDF Spaces,” a hub where you can upload up to 100 files — not just PDFs, but Word, Excel, PowerPoint, web links or cloud-stored documents — and treat them collectively as a single “knowledge base.”Once uploaded, Acrobat Studio automatically generates “insight cards” summarising key themes, breaking down complex details into tables or bullet points, and providing a useful overview at a glance.
You can also ask a built-in AI chatbot questions about the uploaded documents — for instance, have it summarise a contract, extract data from a spreadsheet, or outline pros/cons from a long report. The chatbot even supports custom “personalities” depending on your use case (e.g. analyst, instructor), helping you view the content from different perspectives. The AI assistant cites its sources, which helps mitigate one of the main drawbacks of generative AI: hallucination.Adobe also promises that uploaded documents are not used to train its models. This is an important privacy reassurance for sensitive files.
The Studio package bundles this new AI workspace with other Adobe tools: the full PDF-editing suite, 100 GB cloud storage, 250 generative credits for media creation, and even Adobe Express Premium. There are some practical caveats though. Acrobat Studio is pricey at about $35/month (or $300/year under an early-access offer). We felt there was a lot of bloatware associated with the macOS installer, as a result the web version may be a better option for Mac users.
Also, although PDF Spaces is great for analysis, you cannot directly edit documents in it; to make changes to a PDF you need to download it, edit it in the separate Acrobat editor, then re-upload, which is cumbersome.
Acrobat Studio is a powerful, AI-driven platform for anyone handling complex or large document sets — whether you’re doing research, evaluating investments, handling contracts, or working on business proposals. It excels at summarising, organising, and extracting insights. But its high price and workflow friction (on Mac) may make it more appealing to professionals and heavy users than casual PDF editors.

Why Abbyy FineReader PDF is a good choice: Abbyy FineReader PDF is a specialized tool that excels in specific scenarios, particularly for users who need to digitize physical documents or convert existing files into editable formats. However, its suitability depends heavily on your specific needs, as it is not an all-in-one PDF solution.
Other PDF editing apps offer optical character recognition (OCR) as an added perk, Abbyy FineReader PDF leads on its optical character recognition software and file converter, and, while it offers reliable OCR and file conversion functionalities, it falls short when it comes to PDF editing.
FineReader PDF is a simple user interface with three main tabs: viewing PDF documents, quick and advanced file conversion tools, and importing documents. It has been optimized for macOS and offers a modern design. FineReader PDF supports viewing and highlighting PDF files, with preset highlight colors and comments.
The quick conversion feature processes inputted files to detect content and then selects the output’s format. Supported file formats include PDF, DOCX, XLSX, PPTX, EPUB, FB2, TXT, HTML, RTF, ODT, and CSV. It doesn’t support Apple’s HEIC image format, so users may need to convert HEIC iPhone shots to JPG first. Each format offers its own customizations, such as ebook title, author, layout, and page size.
FineReader PDF exports the document, making it more editable. However, it doesn’t support proper PDF editing, so it may not be the ideal PDF solution for manipulating files.
It doesn’t offer a one-time purchase option and has relatively high recurring fees. There’s a yearly subscription plan on the Abbyy website, and a monthly subscription on the Mac App Store (which is a good option because you can cancel at any time). There’s a full-featured 7-day free trial.

Why Tenorshare’s PDNob PDF Editor is a good choice: Tenorshare’s PDNob PDF Editor for Mac offers a range of features for users with basic to intermediate PDF editing needs, though it comes with some notable drawbacks.
Tenorshare’s PDNob PDF Editor has a sleek user interface with modern buttons that easily convey their actions. It packs in some neat features, such as an optical character recognition (OCR) engine for converting photographed documents to text, password protection, compression, conversion between popular file formats, merging, automatic indexing, and more. The service offers 20GB of cloud storage.
PDNob PDF Editor also packs an AI assistant, but it failed miserably when I attempted to use it. It simply couldn’t comprehend what my (very) basic questions meant and continued asking for further clarification.
The bad news is it is only available on macOS 10.15 or Windows 10, there’s no iPhone or iPad app, which is a disadvantage. Plus, while there is a free 14-day trial (with watermarks) unfortunately if you later want to delete your account and its associated data from Tenorshare servers you must contact support to help (which rings some alarm bells!)
While it is excellent for those with basic to intermediate needs, there are too many downsides and there are better options elsewhere.

Why EaseUS PDF Editor is a good choice: EaseUS PDF Editor (aka Cisdem PDFMaster) is a capable and affordable option, providing all the essential tools without overwhelming features. It offers a free version with watermarks and is available for a one-time lifetime license fee.
One of the options you may come across during your hunt for a PDF editor is that from EaseUS. While the company’s own PDF editor is exclusive to Windows, its website offers PDFMaster for macOS—which is actually developed by its partner Cisdem. EaseUS packages Cisdem PDFMaster as EaseUS PDF Editor for Mac, but it’s essentially the same app. Confused? We were.
Just to baffle you further, you can buy the app from EaseUS or Cisdem, and at the Mac App Store, all at different prices and there are a few differences. We reviewed EaseUS’s version.
The app features a minimalistic user interface with modern-looking buttons and labels.
While PDFMaster’s feature set is somewhat limited compared to more professional apps, it generally gets the job done for those with casual PDF editing needs. You can edit the text in the document, including add or remove words, change the font, insert links and so on. You can also add shapes, highlighting, underlining, strikethroughs, and leave comments. Images, stamps, and digital signatures can also be added.
Watermarking, document cropping, conversion to multiple file formats, size shrinking, optical character recognition (OCR), redaction, page reorganization, PDF comparisons, area calculations are also available.
We did have a few issues during testing. For example, exporting a PDF after password-protecting it didn’t actually secure it.
Once its 14-day trial expires, you will have to pay $89.95 once or $59.95 per year to continue using the software. The macOS version doesn’t provide a monthly subscription plan. There is no mobile version for iOS and iPadOS users.

Cisdem PDFMaster for Mac (aka EaseUS PDF Editor) review
How we test PDF editors
Our testing criteria focus on how well an application serves different user needs, from casual annotation to professional document manipulation.
When testing a PDF editor we evaluate its capabilities across these key areas:
Creation and Conversion A top PDF editor should be able to create, convert, and export PDFs from various file types. It’s crucial that this process preserves the original formatting and uses Optical Character Recognition (OCR) to make scanned text searchable and editable.
Content Editing The ability to directly edit content is fundamental. This includes modifying text, as well as inserting, resizing, and moving images within the document. We also look for features that allow for reorganizing, adding, or deleting pages.
Annotation and Markup For review and collaboration, strong annotation tools are essential. We test for a variety of markup options, such as adding comments, highlighting text, inserting shapes, and placing stamps, to see how well the editor handles both text-heavy and graphic-intensive files.
Security Features Protecting sensitive information is a major consideration. We evaluate security functions like password protection, setting user permissions, and the ability to redact content to control access and ensure privacy.
Advanced Functionality We also look for advanced features that enhance productivity. This includes AI assistants for summarizing or manipulating documents, support for form-filling, e-signatures, and automatic indexing.
Mobile and Cloud Support In today’s multi-device workflows, having access to documents on the go is important. We consider whether an editor offers a dedicated mobile app or provides seamless cloud access to your files.
What to look for in a PDF editor for Mac
When selecting a PDF editor, consider one that can create, convert, and export PDFs from various file types, while preserving the original formatting and making the text searchable and editable through OCR technology.
The editor should also allow for content editing, including modifying text, inserting, resizing, and moving images, and reorganizing pages. Additionally, it should enable users to add comments and annotations to PDF files during review, with tools for marking up both text documents and graphic-heavy files. Security features, such as password protection, permissions setting, and content redaction, are also important for access control. Lastly, consider a PDF editor with mobile support, either through a dedicated mobile app or cloud access.
FAQ
1.
Do Macs have built in PDF?
Macs have a built-in PDF editor called Apple Preview, which offers a comprehensive set of PDF markup tools, including form filling and password protection. This editor is superior to Adobe Acrobat’s free tier in terms of PDF editing capabilities. The PDF editing tools in macOS can be accessed through Quick Look or the Preview app, and they allow users to add text, highlight, underline, and strikethrough text, rotate pages, add and remove pages, add arrows and other shapes, and add comments to PDFs. Additionally, Apple Preview allows users to add their signature to a PDF. However, it’s worth noting that Apple Preview has limited native sharing options and is only available to Mac users.
2.
How to make a PDF on a Mac
To create a PDF on a Mac, you can use the built-in Preview app. Simply create a document on your Mac, then choose Print > PDF and edit in Preview. The Preview app also allows you to export PDFs with options for quality and file format, and add password, quartz filter, or file restrictions. Alternatively, you can use tools like Adobe Acrobat Pro or Standard, one one of the other options in the list above, but these require a subscription.
3.
How to fill in a PDF on a Mac
Filling in a PDF with Apple Preview is easy. The Mac app, included on every Mac, includes a form-filling feature that automatically detects fields and allows easy filling. In addition, AutoFill, a feature introduced in macOS 14.2, uses Contacts to select the necessary information and makes filling out PDFs faster and more secure. If you need more advance features then one of the options above will give you additional viewing, editing, converting, and PDF signing abilities.

4.
Can I edit a PDF for free on a Mac?
Yes, you can edit a PDF for free on a Mac using Apple’s built-in Preview app, which offers a full set of PDF markup tools, including encryption, password protection, and permissions for files.
Other free PDF editors are available, but they often come with limitations. Free online editors are best for simple, quick jobs like adding text or merging documents, but they may have file size restrictions, page limits, or add a watermark to your edited file. However, some free desktop applications like PDFgear offers a robust set of features without cost. PDF Candy is another powerful free option, though it limits users to one task per hour.
Adobe also offers a free Acrobat Reader for reading and filling in PDFs, but it lacks some features that Apple’s built-in Preview app offers.
For more demanding and regular use, a paid desktop editor is usually the best choice. These programs offer the most comprehensive feature sets, including advanced text and image editing, OCR, and robust security tools

5.
What’s the difference between Preview and Acrobat?
Adobe Acrobat and Apple Preview both offer basic annotation tools. While both have a form-filling feature, Preview automatically detects fields for easy filling, unlike Acrobat which requires manual alignment. Preview also offers free tools that Acrobat charges for, including PDF page organization/deletion, password protection, and document scanning . Furthermore, Preview is preloaded on Macs, providing faster performance and a sleeker design. However, Preview’s editing functionality is limited and it is not designed for advanced editing, unlike Acrobat which offers more functionality – it you pay for it.

6.
Are online PDF editors any good?
Web-based editors like pdfFiller and Adobe’s free online editor are convenient because they don’t require software installation and work across platforms. They are generally suitable for basic tasks like commenting, filling forms, and signing documents.
