Australian age-check law pulls Apple deeper into platform governance Apple leans into age checks as Australia's teen social media ban goes live, putting the App Store in the middle of a political fight over kids, tech, and compliance. The App Store ends up acting as an intermediary layerAustralia's new social media law takes effect on December 10 and it targets the apps, not the devices. The law requires major social platforms to prevent anyone under 16 from holding an account, and to deactivate existing under-age accounts. The eSafety Commissioner can issue fines in the tens of millions of dollars for violations. Switching Between iPhone and Android Will Get Easier With New Apple and Google Collaboration Apple and Google are teaming up to make it easier for users to switch between iPhone and Android smartphones, according to 9to5Google. There is a new Android Canary build available today that simplifies data transfer between two smartphones, and Apple is going to implement the functionality in an upcoming iOS 26 beta.
Apple already has a Move to iOS app for transferring data from an Android device to an iPhone, while Google has an Android Switch app that can migrate data from an iPhone to an Android smartphone. The new method will apparently replace the existing apps, offering a transfer function when setting up a new iPhone or Android device.
The collaboration will apparently add "more functionality" and support for transferring data types that are not available to transfer with the current tools.
Both Apple and Google are facing regulatory pressure around the world, with multiple countries scrutinizing practices that might keep customers locked into a platform. Making it simpler for users to transition from one platform to another will be beneficial to both companies.Tags: Android, GoogleThis article, "" first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums

How Apple is Helping Apps Comply With Australia's Social Media Ban for Kids Australia's new social media law goes into effect on December 10, 2025, and ahead of that date, Apple is sharing information on developer tools that are designed to help social media apps adhere to the law.
Children under the age of 16 will no longer be allowed to use Facebook, TikTok, Instagram, Reddit, YouTube (except for YouTube Kids), Snapchat, X, Twitch, Threads, and Kick in Australia, and those apps have to take "reasonable steps" to remove underage users from their platforms starting Wednesday. Apps will also need to prevent new signups from users under the age of 16, and there is a one-year transition period before penalties will begin.
To assist developers, Apple provides the Declared Age Range API, which gives developers access to the age range of users. Other tools available include an option for an age suitability URL that provides more information on the app and its age-related content, app description pages that indicate age restrictions, and tools for setting higher minimum age ranges.
Platforms that don't deactivate accounts created by children will face serious fines. Australia may also add more apps to its banned list over time, depending on the apps that kids adopt after not being able to access their current favorites.
Australia is the first country to implement a total social media ban for children.

Best PDF Editor for Mac (2025): Best tools for text edits, OCR & annotations Macworld
Many workplaces and educational institutions have completely switched from paper documents to digital ones. Consequently, Mac users are increasingly dealing with PDFs and other e-document file formats.
Whether you need to edit, sign or create PDFs, we are here to help you find the best PDF editor for your Mac from the multitude of options. There are various PDF editing apps that cater to various budgets and workflows and among them are a few that stand out in terms of features, performance, and design. In this buying guide we have looks in depth at eight of the best PDF apps available for Mac.
How we test PDF editors
Macworld evaluates PDF editors by evaluating a range of common user tasks to assess the software’s functionality and ease of use. Our evaluation focuses on core editing and annotation capabilities. We examine how easy it is to edit text and sign forms, we check for tools that allow highlighting, underlining, and striking through text, and we assess creative tools like a freehand drawing pen. We also test the accuracy of OCR tools where available. We pick the best PDF editors based on the best editor for certain use case, not just the most powerful or expensive. This guide to the best PDF editors is based on full reviews of the software mentioned. We offer more detail on our testing methodology below.

Why Apple Preview is a good choice: Apple Preview, the default document and image viewer on macOS, is a surprisingly capable and free application that handles most personal and business PDF needs. While it is not designed to replace a full-featured, professional PDF editor, Preview offers a robust set of tools for free. Preview’s built-in capabilities are more than sufficient for everyday tasks, making it an excellent starting point for anyone needing to work with PDFs on a Mac.
Apple Preview is the default document and image viewer on macOS, offering a range of useful features beyond just viewing photos and PDFs.
Click on any PDF (or any image format) to open it and it will launch in Preview. Alternatively, open Preview and it will open the Finder, allowing users to browse through folders to locate the file they want to view. The app features a toolbar at the top of the screen, which allows users to view file details, zoom in or out, share the file, fill in a form, or mark up the file.
The Markup button reveals tools for selection, doodling, inserting shapes or sticky notes, signing, and typing text. These tools are easily customizable, allowing users to control the color and size of a shape or text box, as well as pick between multiple fonts when typing. There is also an autofill helper.
Apple Preview is not designed to replace image or PDF editors, but it still offers some power-user features. The menu bar’s Tools button allows users to reveal more advanced image controls, such as granular resizing, color adjustments, and automatic background removal. The File menu includes a Export button that allows users to choose the output’s quality and file format, allowing them to convert images to various formats.
When viewing a PDF file in Apple Preview, users can easily re-order or delete its pages using the sidebar, allowing them to limit the file to the important bits they need. If exporting the PDF using Preview, users can optionally add a password, quartz filter, or file restrictions.
If you’d prefer not to pay for Adobe Acrobat or another solution, Apple Preview may be more suitable for you. Apple Preview offers free tools that Adobe has paywalled, including PDF page organization/deletion, password protection for PDF files, and document scanning.

Why Readdle PDF Expert is a good choice: PDF Expert is a popular choice for Mac users, known for its intuitive interface, smooth performance, and a wide range of tools, including AI features. It is available as a lifetime license, making it a cost-effective alternative to subscription models
PDF Expert has a wide range of reliable tools and an intuitive user interface. It’s a great option if you are looking for more than Preview offers for free.
Upon launching PDF Expert, users are greeted by a Tools tab with shortcuts to various features, such as organizing, optimizing, protecting, reviewing, or converting documents. The app runs smoothly and gives you everything you need to fully control a PDF file, including edit text and images, sign, fill checkboxes, add links, redact content in multiple ways, insert shapes, highlight text, doodle, and even measure the distance between two points or calculate specific areas.
The PDF Expert toolbar features layout settings, an advanced search bar, and an AI Chat button. The AI Chat button allows users to interact with the integrated chatbot, summarize PDFs, list key points, generate hashtags, and more. The toolbar’s center includes commonly used PDF editing functionalities, such as annotation, editing, file conversion and exporting, signing, and optical character recognition (OCR).

Why Wondershare PDFelement is a good choice: Wondershare PDFelement is a capable PDF editor that offers a compelling alternative to other options on the market, particularly for users with specific needs and budgets thanks to its a rich feature set and flexible pricing.
Wondershare’s PDFelement is a document manipulation tool that offers essential features on all platforms at a reasonable price. The app features a minimalistic user interface and offers single- and cross-platform licenses, with the main difference being app updates. If you plan to use the PDF editor on your Mac exclusively, you can opt for a one-year, two-year, or lifetime license. PDFelement also supports iOS, iPadOS, Windows, Android, and the web, offering an all-encompassing bundle that supports all of these platforms.
The single-platform licenses include 20GB of cloud storage, while the highlighted bundles offer 100GB. Once you run out of the 20,000 AI tokens included with your purchase, you can buy more. PDFelement features a clean home page showcasing standard PDF editing tools, such as PDF conversion, optical character recognition (OCR), template selection, file compression, and more. It also has a sidebar that grants access to handy destinations like recent files, cloud documents, tagged PDFs, and agreements you’ve sent others to sign.
PDFelement supports most commonly needed PDF editing functionalities, including text manipulation, image and URL insertion, adding, deleting, and editing the document’s pages. It’s not the most advanced selection out there, but it gets the job done in casual workflows. PDFelement is better suited for annotation and artificial intelligence needs, allowing users to insert text, shapes, comments, stamps, forms, checkboxes, text callouts, and more. It can also automatically bookmarks reflecting the document’s chapters.
Beyond text manipulation, PDFelement can redact text, add a password to the file, convert the PDF to a Microsoft Office format, change the pages’ background, compress the size, and insert a watermark. While not the most feature-rich PDF editor, it caters to casual users seeking a lightweight solution.
Despite its minimalism, getting used to PDFelement may take some time. The unlabeled buttons in the editor’s sidebar can be confusing and challenging to identify, and some features, like text editing, can sometimes be unpredictable. PDFelement is an excellent PDF editor for those with casual needs, but its tools aren’t as advanced as those offered by many rival apps.

Why Foxit PDF Editor is a good choice: Foxit PDF Editor is a strong competitor to Acrobat, Foxit is packed with business-ready features and uses a familiar Microsoft Office-style interface. It offers different plans, with the Editor+ version including AI-assisted tools and eSign capabilities.
Foxit offers a range of PDF-centric solutions for Mac users, including PDF Reader and PDF Editor. PDF Reader is available on macOS for free, allowing users to view, annotate, sign, and have AI analyze their documents. The paid-for PDF Editor unlocks the complete editing toolbox for an annual fee, with a base plan and a plus (+) plan that includes more features. There are options to pay monthly, but it is still an annual contract: there’s no option to cancel after a month.
The free PDF Reader allows users to control the size, color, and style of inserted text or shapes, as well as customize features like changing the document’s background shade, reversing and rotating pages, signing forms, and more. It can read text aloud, measure distances, calculate areas, magnify selected spots, and have AI analyze your document.
The paid-for PDF Editor supports all of PDF Reader’s features but adds editing functionalities, such as file conversion, optical character recognition (OCR), and full manipulation of a document’s text and images through addition, deletion, or tweaking. It caters to power users with advanced features like document sanitization, redaction styles, security layers, JavaScript, and accessibility checks.
Foxit’s PDF Editor stands out for its ChatGPT integration, which can analyze and summarize documents and perform actions on your behalf. The base plan should suffice for most users, while the Plus plan offers exclusives like mobile app access, tracking other parties’ signatures, smart redaction, 130GB of cloud storage, and template support.
While the app is generally swift, the user interface may seem too packed to some users, especially those who don’t need all the offered tools. Foxit PDF Editor is designed for serious users rather than casual users, and if the UI overwhelms you, it may be an overkill for you.

Why Adobe Acrobat Studio is a good choice: Adobe Acrobat offers a range of products from a free online editor to the paid Standard and Pro versions. The Pro version is the most feature-rich, including advanced tools like version comparison and web form creation, but it is also one of the more expensive options.
In 2025 Adobe introduced Acrobat Studio, which combines the Acrobat Pro features with Adobe Express premium and adds AI tools.
Adobe Acrobat Studio marks a major step in making PDFs more intelligent and interactive — combining traditional PDF editing tools with AI-powered document analysis and collaboration features. At its core is “PDF Spaces,” a hub where you can upload up to 100 files — not just PDFs, but Word, Excel, PowerPoint, web links or cloud-stored documents — and treat them collectively as a single “knowledge base.”Once uploaded, Acrobat Studio automatically generates “insight cards” summarising key themes, breaking down complex details into tables or bullet points, and providing a useful overview at a glance.
You can also ask a built-in AI chatbot questions about the uploaded documents — for instance, have it summarise a contract, extract data from a spreadsheet, or outline pros/cons from a long report. The chatbot even supports custom “personalities” depending on your use case (e.g. analyst, instructor), helping you view the content from different perspectives. The AI assistant cites its sources, which helps mitigate one of the main drawbacks of generative AI: hallucination.Adobe also promises that uploaded documents are not used to train its models. This is an important privacy reassurance for sensitive files.
The Studio package bundles this new AI workspace with other Adobe tools: the full PDF-editing suite, 100 GB cloud storage, 250 generative credits for media creation, and even Adobe Express Premium. There are some practical caveats though. Acrobat Studio is pricey at about $35/month (or $300/year under an early-access offer). We felt there was a lot of bloatware associated with the macOS installer, as a result the web version may be a better option for Mac users.
Also, although PDF Spaces is great for analysis, you cannot directly edit documents in it; to make changes to a PDF you need to download it, edit it in the separate Acrobat editor, then re-upload, which is cumbersome.
Acrobat Studio is a powerful, AI-driven platform for anyone handling complex or large document sets — whether you’re doing research, evaluating investments, handling contracts, or working on business proposals. It excels at summarising, organising, and extracting insights. But its high price and workflow friction (on Mac) may make it more appealing to professionals and heavy users than casual PDF editors.

Why Abbyy FineReader PDF is a good choice: Abbyy FineReader PDF is a specialized tool that excels in specific scenarios, particularly for users who need to digitize physical documents or convert existing files into editable formats. However, its suitability depends heavily on your specific needs, as it is not an all-in-one PDF solution.
Other PDF editing apps offer optical character recognition (OCR) as an added perk, Abbyy FineReader PDF leads on its optical character recognition software and file converter, and, while it offers reliable OCR and file conversion functionalities, it falls short when it comes to PDF editing.
FineReader PDF is a simple user interface with three main tabs: viewing PDF documents, quick and advanced file conversion tools, and importing documents. It has been optimized for macOS and offers a modern design. FineReader PDF supports viewing and highlighting PDF files, with preset highlight colors and comments.
The quick conversion feature processes inputted files to detect content and then selects the output’s format. Supported file formats include PDF, DOCX, XLSX, PPTX, EPUB, FB2, TXT, HTML, RTF, ODT, and CSV. It doesn’t support Apple’s HEIC image format, so users may need to convert HEIC iPhone shots to JPG first. Each format offers its own customizations, such as ebook title, author, layout, and page size.
FineReader PDF exports the document, making it more editable. However, it doesn’t support proper PDF editing, so it may not be the ideal PDF solution for manipulating files.
It doesn’t offer a one-time purchase option and has relatively high recurring fees. There’s a yearly subscription plan on the Abbyy website, and a monthly subscription on the Mac App Store (which is a good option because you can cancel at any time). There’s a full-featured 7-day free trial.

Why Tenorshare’s PDNob PDF Editor is a good choice: Tenorshare’s PDNob PDF Editor for Mac offers a range of features for users with basic to intermediate PDF editing needs, though it comes with some notable drawbacks.
Tenorshare’s PDNob PDF Editor has a sleek user interface with modern buttons that easily convey their actions. It packs in some neat features, such as an optical character recognition (OCR) engine for converting photographed documents to text, password protection, compression, conversion between popular file formats, merging, automatic indexing, and more. The service offers 20GB of cloud storage.
PDNob PDF Editor also packs an AI assistant, but it failed miserably when I attempted to use it. It simply couldn’t comprehend what my (very) basic questions meant and continued asking for further clarification.
The bad news is it is only available on macOS 10.15 or Windows 10, there’s no iPhone or iPad app, which is a disadvantage. Plus, while there is a free 14-day trial (with watermarks) unfortunately if you later want to delete your account and its associated data from Tenorshare servers you must contact support to help (which rings some alarm bells!)
While it is excellent for those with basic to intermediate needs, there are too many downsides and there are better options elsewhere.

Why EaseUS PDF Editor is a good choice: EaseUS PDF Editor (aka Cisdem PDFMaster) is a capable and affordable option, providing all the essential tools without overwhelming features. It offers a free version with watermarks and is available for a one-time lifetime license fee.
One of the options you may come across during your hunt for a PDF editor is that from EaseUS. While the company’s own PDF editor is exclusive to Windows, its website offers PDFMaster for macOS—which is actually developed by its partner Cisdem. EaseUS packages Cisdem PDFMaster as EaseUS PDF Editor for Mac, but it’s essentially the same app. Confused? We were.
Just to baffle you further, you can buy the app from EaseUS or Cisdem, and at the Mac App Store, all at different prices and there are a few differences. We reviewed EaseUS’s version.
The app features a minimalistic user interface with modern-looking buttons and labels.
While PDFMaster’s feature set is somewhat limited compared to more professional apps, it generally gets the job done for those with casual PDF editing needs. You can edit the text in the document, including add or remove words, change the font, insert links and so on. You can also add shapes, highlighting, underlining, strikethroughs, and leave comments. Images, stamps, and digital signatures can also be added.
Watermarking, document cropping, conversion to multiple file formats, size shrinking, optical character recognition (OCR), redaction, page reorganization, PDF comparisons, area calculations are also available.
We did have a few issues during testing. For example, exporting a PDF after password-protecting it didn’t actually secure it.
Once its 14-day trial expires, you will have to pay $89.95 once or $59.95 per year to continue using the software. The macOS version doesn’t provide a monthly subscription plan. There is no mobile version for iOS and iPadOS users.

Cisdem PDFMaster for Mac (aka EaseUS PDF Editor) review
How we test PDF editors
Our testing criteria focus on how well an application serves different user needs, from casual annotation to professional document manipulation.
When testing a PDF editor we evaluate its capabilities across these key areas:
Creation and Conversion A top PDF editor should be able to create, convert, and export PDFs from various file types. It’s crucial that this process preserves the original formatting and uses Optical Character Recognition (OCR) to make scanned text searchable and editable.
Content Editing The ability to directly edit content is fundamental. This includes modifying text, as well as inserting, resizing, and moving images within the document. We also look for features that allow for reorganizing, adding, or deleting pages.
Annotation and Markup For review and collaboration, strong annotation tools are essential. We test for a variety of markup options, such as adding comments, highlighting text, inserting shapes, and placing stamps, to see how well the editor handles both text-heavy and graphic-intensive files.
Security Features Protecting sensitive information is a major consideration. We evaluate security functions like password protection, setting user permissions, and the ability to redact content to control access and ensure privacy.
Advanced Functionality We also look for advanced features that enhance productivity. This includes AI assistants for summarizing or manipulating documents, support for form-filling, e-signatures, and automatic indexing.
Mobile and Cloud Support In today’s multi-device workflows, having access to documents on the go is important. We consider whether an editor offers a dedicated mobile app or provides seamless cloud access to your files.
What to look for in a PDF editor for Mac
When selecting a PDF editor, consider one that can create, convert, and export PDFs from various file types, while preserving the original formatting and making the text searchable and editable through OCR technology.
The editor should also allow for content editing, including modifying text, inserting, resizing, and moving images, and reorganizing pages. Additionally, it should enable users to add comments and annotations to PDF files during review, with tools for marking up both text documents and graphic-heavy files. Security features, such as password protection, permissions setting, and content redaction, are also important for access control. Lastly, consider a PDF editor with mobile support, either through a dedicated mobile app or cloud access.
FAQ
1.
Do Macs have built in PDF?
Macs have a built-in PDF editor called Apple Preview, which offers a comprehensive set of PDF markup tools, including form filling and password protection. This editor is superior to Adobe Acrobat’s free tier in terms of PDF editing capabilities. The PDF editing tools in macOS can be accessed through Quick Look or the Preview app, and they allow users to add text, highlight, underline, and strikethrough text, rotate pages, add and remove pages, add arrows and other shapes, and add comments to PDFs. Additionally, Apple Preview allows users to add their signature to a PDF. However, it’s worth noting that Apple Preview has limited native sharing options and is only available to Mac users.
2.
How to make a PDF on a Mac
To create a PDF on a Mac, you can use the built-in Preview app. Simply create a document on your Mac, then choose Print > PDF and edit in Preview. The Preview app also allows you to export PDFs with options for quality and file format, and add password, quartz filter, or file restrictions. Alternatively, you can use tools like Adobe Acrobat Pro or Standard, one one of the other options in the list above, but these require a subscription.
3.
How to fill in a PDF on a Mac
Filling in a PDF with Apple Preview is easy. The Mac app, included on every Mac, includes a form-filling feature that automatically detects fields and allows easy filling. In addition, AutoFill, a feature introduced in macOS 14.2, uses Contacts to select the necessary information and makes filling out PDFs faster and more secure. If you need more advance features then one of the options above will give you additional viewing, editing, converting, and PDF signing abilities.

4.
Can I edit a PDF for free on a Mac?
Yes, you can edit a PDF for free on a Mac using Apple’s built-in Preview app, which offers a full set of PDF markup tools, including encryption, password protection, and permissions for files.
Other free PDF editors are available, but they often come with limitations. Free online editors are best for simple, quick jobs like adding text or merging documents, but they may have file size restrictions, page limits, or add a watermark to your edited file. However, some free desktop applications like PDFgear offers a robust set of features without cost. PDF Candy is another powerful free option, though it limits users to one task per hour.
Adobe also offers a free Acrobat Reader for reading and filling in PDFs, but it lacks some features that Apple’s built-in Preview app offers.
For more demanding and regular use, a paid desktop editor is usually the best choice. These programs offer the most comprehensive feature sets, including advanced text and image editing, OCR, and robust security tools

5.
What’s the difference between Preview and Acrobat?
Adobe Acrobat and Apple Preview both offer basic annotation tools. While both have a form-filling feature, Preview automatically detects fields for easy filling, unlike Acrobat which requires manual alignment. Preview also offers free tools that Acrobat charges for, including PDF page organization/deletion, password protection, and document scanning . Furthermore, Preview is preloaded on Macs, providing faster performance and a sleeker design. However, Preview’s editing functionality is limited and it is not designed for advanced editing, unlike Acrobat which offers more functionality – it you pay for it.

6.
Are online PDF editors any good?
Web-based editors like pdfFiller and Adobe’s free online editor are convenient because they don’t require software installation and work across platforms. They are generally suitable for basic tasks like commenting, filling forms, and signing documents.

Apple chief Johny Srouji confirms he isn't 'leaving anytime soon' Amidst an already tumultuous week for Apple staff changes, a wild rumor emerged of a supposed conversation where Srouji told Cook he considered leaving, which has now been discounted by the man himself.Johny Srouji says he's not going anywhereApple AI head John Giannandrea is retiring, as is VP for Environment, Policy, and Social Initiatives Lisa Jackson, and general counsel Kate Adams. This news arrived alongside the less-expected departure of design chief Alan Dye, who is leaving for Meta. While Dye's departure was obviously a wrench in otherwise seemingly regular retirement announcements, Bloomberg had a source suggesting Apple's hardware chief Johny Srouji was also on his way out. A day later on Monday, Johny Srouji shared that he has no intention of "leaving anytime soon," via an internal memo shared by Bloomberg. Continue Reading on AppleInsider | Discuss on our Forums
Apple's Chipmaking Chief Johny Srouji Responds to Report About His Career Plans Apple's chipmaking chief Johny Srouji has reportedly indicated that he plans to continue working for the company for the foreseeable future.
"I love my team, and I love my job at Apple, and I don't plan on leaving anytime soon," said Srouji, in a memo obtained by Bloomberg's Mark Gurman.
Here is Srouji's full memo, as shared by Bloomberg:I know you've been reading all kind of rumors and speculations about my future at Apple, and I feel that you need to hear from me directly. I am proud of the amazing Technologies we all build across Displays, Cameras, Sensors, Silicon, Batteries, and a very wide set of technologies, across all of Apple Products. Together we enable the best products in the world. I love my team, and I love my job at Apple, and I don't plan on leaving anytime soon.Last week, Gurman said that Srouji recently told Apple CEO Tim Cook that he was "seriously considering leaving in the near future." Srouji did not explicitly deny the report, but it appears that he has no plans to leave Apple for now.
Srouji informed colleagues that he would be interested in working for another company if he did leave Apple, rather than retiring, according to Gurman.
Srouji is Apple's Senior Vice President of Hardware Technologies. He joined the company in 2008 to lead development of the iPhone 4's A4 chip, the first Apple-designed system-on-a-chip. He previously held senior positions at Intel and IBM.
Apple's chips have achieved many performance records, making Srouji one of the company's most important executives. For example, the A17 Pro chip in the iPhone 17 Pro models offers the world's fastest CPU in any smartphone, while Apple silicon chips in Macs continue to deliver industry-leading performance per watt.
Apple is facing turnover among its top ranks. Apple's operations chief Jeff Williams recently retired, and he will soon be followed by the company's AI research chief John Giannandrea, environmental chief Lisa Jackson, and general counsel Kate Adams. In addition, Apple's software design chief Alan Dye is joining Meta's Reality Labs later this month. Finally, Cook is reportedly planning to step down as CEO as early as next year.Tags: Johny Srouji, Mark GurmanThis article, "" first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums

iPhone 16 Was World's Best-Selling Smartphone in Q3 2025 Apple led global smartphone sales with the iPhone 16 in the third quarter of 2025 while simultaneously accelerating demand for the iPhone 17 lineup and expanding its promotional footprint in the United States, according to new analyses from Counterpoint Research.
Counterpoint Research's Global Monthly Handset Model Sales Tracker shows that the iPhone 16 was the best-selling smartphone worldwide during the third quarter of 2025. Well into its second year of life, the device's sustained performance is attributed to continued demand among users upgrading from older iPhone generations, expanded carrier promotions in developed markets, and the broad appeal of the standard iPhone configuration in regions where ultra-premium models represent a smaller share of total volume.
Alongside the iPhone 16's continued leadership, Counterpoint says the iPhone 17 Pro Max entered the quarterly global top-10 list and became the best-selling smartphone in September 2025, despite "limited availability towards the end of the quarter." According to the firm, demand for the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max was strengthened by a large cohort of users who purchased iPhones during the COVID-19 period and returned for major upgrades this year. New features such as a 48-megapixel telephoto camera with 8x optical zoom and a vapor-chamber cooling system represent one of Apple's most substantial year-over-year camera and thermal architecture revisions and contributed materially to monthly sales growth.
The same dataset indicates that, while Apple maintained its position at the top of the global rankings with the iPhone 16 and expanded momentum with the iPhone 17 Pro Max, Samsung increased its presence in the top-10 list to five positions, all from the Galaxy A series.
A separate Counterpoint analysis of the global foldable smartphone sector shows that the premium market segment where Apple has not yet entered continued to grow at a materially faster pace than the broader industry. The firm reports that global foldable shipments increased 14% year-over-year in the third quarter of 2025, which is the highest quarterly shipment volume ever recorded for the category.
Counterpoint attributes much of this performance to Samsung's Galaxy Z 7 series, especially the Galaxy Z Fold 7, which generated "exceptionally strong consumer response" due to a slimmer and lighter enclosure, reduced crease visibility, and an upgraded hinge mechanism designed for improved durability. While Apple has not released a foldable iPhone, rumors suggest that the company will debut such a device as soon as next year.
Meanwhile, Counterpoint's U.S. Weekly Smartphone Promotions Index shows that Apple intensified its promotional activity in response to unusually early and aggressive Pixel 10 discounts led by Google. Apple finished the period overtaking Google. Tag: CounterpointThis article, "" first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums

Apple faces ‘biggest personnel shake-up in decades’ as another top exec eyes exit Macworld
Much talk in Silicon Valley lately has focused on the timing of Apple boss Tim Cook’s retirement. At the age of 65, and having publicly discussed his departure as far back as 2021, he isn’t going to be presenting keynote videos forever. But while the CEO insists he isn’t leaving just yet, it’s striking how many other senior Apple executives are.
In his latest report on the comings and goings inside Apple Park, Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman discusses what he describes as the company’s “biggest personnel shake-up in decades,” rattling off an astonishing list of 18 big-name departures that have either happened this year or are expected to happen soon. Apple’s AI team in particular has been decimated, including the retirement (and possible de facto firing) of its chief. But the design and engineering sections of the company have suffered similarly alarming brain drains.
It’s hardly surprising that the AI department is facing turmoil, given its struggles to catch up with Apple’s rivals. John Giannandrea, the company’s Senior VP of Machine Learning and AI, was replaced as head of Siri back in March following a series of failures and humiliations related to the beleaguered voice assistant. At the start of December, he announced plans to retire, although he will be kept on in an advisory capacity until the spring.
Underperforming teams always experience turnover. But design and engineering have traditionally been Apple’s strengths: under Sir Jonathan Ive, the in-house design shop became legendary in the industry. Then Ive left (officially in 2022 but effectively in 2019) and much of his team followed him through the exit door. Some in the same direction, choosing to join his new company.
A similar fate now appears to be facing other departments at Apple Park. The latest exec rumored to leave is Johny Srouji, Apple’s Senior VP of Hardware Technologies, the driving force behind Apple’s in-house chips, and a sufficiently big name that he appears in the top section of Apple’s leadership page. Srouji “recently told Cook that he is seriously considering leaving in the near future,” Gurman reports, citing sources with knowledge of the matter. And other important hardware employees have left, with the J595 device team “bleeding talent,” Gurman says.
Turnover isn’t always negative, and Apple has the funds to cherrypick talent to replace those who leave. But it’s hard to shake the feeling that Cupertino is facing a lot more departures than usual, and tempting to wonder why they’re all leaving. What do they know that we don’t?

Rivian to Offer iPhone Car Keys in Apple Wallet App Later This Month Apple Wallet car key support is coming to Rivian's second-generation R1S and R1T electric vehicles with a 2025.46 software update later this month, according to the company's software chief Wassym Bensaid. He did not provide a specific date.
This feature will allow you to remotely unlock, lock, and start a second-generation R1S or R1T with an iPhone or Apple Watch, without needing to use the Rivian app. Express Mode will be supported, meaning you can keep your iPhone in your pocket as you approach the vehicle, as unlocking the device with Face ID is not required.
Rivian is implementing a newer version of the feature with Ultra Wideband technology for passive entry, eliminating the need to place your iPhone near an NFC reader.
If your iPhone battery runs out, a Power Reserve feature ensures the Apple Wallet key can still be used for up to five hours after the device shut off.
You can share an Apple Wallet car key with up to eight family and friends via AirDrop or any messaging app, such as the Messages app or WhatsApp.
Apple Wallet car keys will not be supported in Rivian's first-generation R1S and R1T vehicles that were built through the 2024 model year.

The Apple Watch Series 11 is $100 off, cheaper than it was for Black Friday Macworld
If you’re looking for the perfect holiday gift for the person you love, may we recommend the Apple Watch Series 11? Not only is this an excellent smartwatch for staying healthy and getting fit, but today it’s on sale at Amazon for $299, even lower than we saw on Black Friday or Cyber Monday.
When we reviewed the Series 11, we gave it a 4-star rating and appreciated its overall performance, as well as its great design. This model delivers great new features and improved health monitoring, including notifications on potential hypertension issues. Alongside the new sleep scoring system and the excellent Vitals app, you’ll get a complete picture of your health and sleep quality.
The trusty Crash Detection and Fall Detection features will alert people in the event of an accident, and you’ll also get sleep apnea monitoring along with the usual array of health sensors and alerts. And since the glass display is more scratch-resistant than the previous version, you won’t have to worry about bumps and dings.
One of the best things about this new watch is that it now comes with a 24-hour battery life on a single charge, which makes it ideal for long days, especially when you’re training for various sports events and actually putting all those sensors into overdrive. Even better, a quick 15-minute charge can give you an extra eight hours of use, while low-power mode can keep the important bits up and running all weekend.
So make that special someone in your life happy and healthy this holiday and get them the $299 Apple Watch Series 11 for its best price yet.

Apple Fitness+ Coming to 28 New Regions With Digital Voice Dubbing Apple today announced that Fitness+ is expanding to 28 new markets on December 15 in the service's largest international rollout since launch, accompanied by new language dubbing and a K-Pop music genre.
Apple Fitness+ will become available in Chile, Hong Kong, India, the Netherlands, Singapore, Taiwan, and additional regions on December 15, with Japan scheduled to follow early next year. The expansion increases total availability to 49 countries.
Hundreds of sessions will initially be available with digitally generated voice dubbing in Spanish and German, with Japanese added when the service launches in Japan. New dubbed episodes will be released weekly across all supported regions.
The new dubbing system uses a generated voice modeled on each of the 28 Fitness+ trainers' real voices. Users will be able to switch audio tracks after starting a session or set a preferred language in the Fitness app, which will automatically default to the dubbed version when available. Apple has not previously offered dubbed workout content on Fitness+, instead relying on subtitles for non-English markets since the service launched in 2020.
Apple is also adding a new K-Pop music genre to the service, which will be available across workout types. The new category joins existing genres such as Upbeat Anthems, Latest Hits, Hip-Hop/R&B, and Latin Grooves. Apple also noted that the latest episode of Time to Walk features Japanese Formula 1 driver Yuki Tsunoda, and is available today.
Fitness+ is currently available in Australia, Austria, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, France, Germany, Indonesia, Ireland, Italy, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Portugal, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Spain, Switzerland, the UAE, the UK, and the U.S. The service will reach the newly announced 28 markets, which include Norway, Poland, the Philippines, Sweden, Vietnam, and others, on December 15.Tag: Apple Fitness PlusThis article, "" first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums

New Requirements for Social Media Apps in Australia Beginning December 10, 2025, a new Australian law will require certain social media platforms operating in Australia to prevent people under 16 from having a social media account. Impacted developers are responsible for making sure they follow the requirements of the new law, including deactivating any existing accounts for users under 16 and monitoring new signups.Apple provides several tools to help meet the requirements of this law:Declared Age Range APIThe new Declared Age Range API helps developers provide age-appropriate experiences for their users. Developers can choose to request the age range that is most relevant to their use case, such as an age range of under 16, and modify app behavior based on this information.App description on the App StoreWhen making an app available on the App Store, developers must include a description that helps users determine whether the app is appropriate for them. Developers can use this app description field to indicate information that may not be captured in other areas of the product page, such as social media age restrictions for people under a certain age. In-app controls on the App Store product pageThis year, Apple updated the age ratings questionnaire that is required for all apps. The update included adding new questions about in-app controls, such as the presence of age assurance and parental controls. Apps using age assurance methods — such as the Declared Age Range API — to comply with the law and prevent users under 16 from creating accounts can indicate the presence of this capability on their App Store product page.Higher minimum age ratingWith our recent update to age ratings, developers can set a higher age rating than the one generated by their responses to the age ratings questionnaire in App Store Connect. Developers can view the age rating for each of their apps and select a higher rating if they wish, in the App Information section in App Store Connect.Age Suitability URLWhen updating an app's age rating, developers have the option to include an Age Suitability URL that links to a developer-hosted website with details about the app and its age-related content. When enabled, this URL appears on the App Store product page under the age ratings details section. Developers can use this URL to provide region-specific information and requirements, such as the prohibition in Australia of people under 16 having a social media account.Learn more about the Declared Age Range APILearn more about updating your app’s age ratingLearn more about an app’s product page

iPhone 18 Pro Leak Adds New Evidence for Under-Display Face ID Apple is actively testing under-screen Face ID for next year's iPhone 18 Pro models using a special "spliced micro-transparent glass" window built into the display, claims a Chinese leaker.
According to "Smart Pikachu," a Weibo account that has previously shared accurate supply-chain details on Chinese Android hardware, Apple is testing the special glass as a way to let the TrueDepth system's infrared sensors pass through the panel without distortion.
The approach is similar to existing industry techniques that use micro-perforated or nano-patterned glass to selectively improve IR transmission in a localized region above the sensor array.
The report also suggests Apple's work has already prompted related suppliers to accelerate preparation for potential production.
There have been several rumors suggesting the iPhone 18 Pro models will include under-display Face ID, but some disagreement over whether we'll see the technology in 2026. A May report by The Information claimed that iPhone 18 Pro models will have no Dynamic Island with just a pinhole cutout located at the upper left of the display, but other rumors suggest there's still going to be a Dynamic Island.
Analyst Ross Young said that the iPhone 18 Pro models could have under-display Face ID, but that doesn't mean there won't be no Dynamic Island at all. Instead, the pill-shaped hole will be smaller. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman has also spoken of a slimmed down Dynamic Island for the iPhone 18 Pro models.
The new claim of a micro-transparent glass window supports the view that there will be a smaller Dynamic Island that shifts TrueDepth sensing components below the screen while retaining a smaller cutout for the front camera. While Smart Pikachu does not specifically mention the Pro models, supply-chain sources often use "series" loosely when discussing early panel and materials testing, and all previous rumors have related to Apple's high-end models.
Apple is expected to release the iPhone 18 Pro models in September, alongside an all-new foldable iPhone, as part of a new split cycle launch. The regular iPhone 18 and the more affordable iPhone 18e are not expected to debut until early 2027.Related Roundup: iPhone 18Tag: Smart PikachuRelated Forum: iPhoneThis article, "" first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums

Apple Launches Virtual Manufacturing Academy Apple today announced an expansion of the Apple Manufacturing Academy with a new set of virtual training programs for small- and medium-sized businesses across the United States.
The update marks the first time the Academy's training has been accessible online. It was previously only available via in-person sessions in Detroit. Apple describes it as a free resource intended to accelerate innovation among American manufacturers as part of its broader plan to invest $600 billion in the U.S. economy over the next four years.
Apple said the new online courses cover a range of advanced manufacturing topics, including automation, predictive maintenance, quality control optimization, and the use of machine learning with vision systems. The training program also incorporates professional development content on communication and presentation skills to help participants prepare for operational and leadership roles.
The expanded program is intended to increase access for companies that have not been able to attend in-person sessions. Launched in collaboration with Michigan State University (MSU) in August, the Apple Manufacturing Academy has already provided hands-on training and consultation to more than 80 businesses from Florida, Indiana, Michigan, Missouri, and Utah.
Businesses enrolled in virtual programming at manufacturingacademy.msu.edu. The current learning materials form the initial phase of what Apple says will be a continuously expanding digital curriculum. This article, "" first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums
8 Mac settings and features you’re not using but should Macworld
Your Mac is full of surprises, and even many years after first owning one, you can still find yourself learning new tips and tricks that you weren’t aware of before.
There are many ingenious hidden features stashed away in macOS, and we’re here to highlight eight of our favorites. They range from little-known tricks to overlooked gems, and each one should help improve the way you use your Mac.
1.
Desktop stacks
Foundry
After using your Mac for a while, it’s easy to clog up your desktop with files and folders. I get it, I’m no monastic ascetic with a zen-like calm on my Mac desktop either. Thankfully, there’s a way to bring order to chaos without having to laboriously stash all those items away one by one.
Let me introduce a feature called desktop stacks. With this enabled, macOS will automatically group related files into what are essentially heaps on your desktop. So, you’ll find one pile for images, one stack for PDF documents, one for presentations, and more. If you want to find an individual file, just click the stack and everything it contains will be revealed. Click again to hide the mess once more. Swipe two fingers across the stack and you can even browse through its files.
To get going with desktop stacks, just right-click your desktop and select the Use Stacks option. To turn it off, simply disable this option. And with that, your Mac brings the illusion of calm and order to your desktop, even if we all know what’s lurking beneath the façade.
2.
Menu customization
Foundry
The menu bar is a go-to place to find helpful controls for your apps and settings, but you don’t need to just rely on what Apple decides to put there. Instead, you can dive in and customize it as you see fit.
To get started, open the System Settings app and select Control Center in the left-hand sidebar. Here, you can browse through a range of options and decide whether to show them in the menu bar at all times, only when the app is active, or to hide them instead.
If you want to remove an icon from the menu bar, you have another option beyond using the Control Center section of the System Settings app. Instead, hold the Command key, then click and drag the item out of the menu bar. When an X appears next to your pointer, release your mouse button, and the icon will be removed.
3.
Hot Corners
Foundry
Need a quick way to access system functions like Mission Control, start a screen saver, or lock your Mac without fiddling with settings and menus? Try Hot Corners on for size. With these set up, you simply move your mouse pointer into a specified corner of your Mac’s display and your chosen action will be performed.
Open the System Settings app and click Desktop & Dock in the sidebar, then scroll all the way to the bottom and click Hot Corners. You’ll now see an image of your desktop with four dropdown menus. Pick one, select an option from the menu, then select Done to confirm.
You can use Hot Corners to do a wide range of things, from showing your desktop or opening the Notification Center to launching a Quick Note or putting your screen to sleep. That gives the feature a lot of flexibility to adapt to your needs.
And if you’re worried about accidentally setting off one of these actions, you can add a modifier key into the mix. Just open one of the dropdown menus, then hold Shift, Control, Option or Command. You can combine any number of these keys, so you might open Launchpad by holding Option and Command, then moving your mouse to the bottom-left corner of your screen, for example.
4.
Drag and Dock
Foundry
For most of us, the usual way of opening a file inside a specific app is to initially open the app, then load the file from there. But there’s a quicker way that doesn’t require you to load up the app first.
All you have to do is drag the file onto the app icon–voilà, the app starts up with the file ready to go. The easiest way to do this is to drop the file onto an app in your Dock, but you can do this wherever an app is stored; it works with apps housed in your Applications folder, for example. It could save you a little time if you’re working with a folder of files and want to get started quickly.
5.
Speedy saving
Foundry
There’s another useful drag-and-drop feature that you might not know about, and this time it relates to saving files. Instead of having to click through folder after folder to get to the save location you need, there’s a much faster way to save your files.
The next time you have a save dialog box open in an app, drag the destination folder directly onto the save window. Doing so will set the save location as the folder you just dragged into place. You can drag a folder from anywhere: from your desktop, from inside a Finder window, even from the path bar at the bottom of a Finder window.
I’m something of a neurotic organizer on my Mac, with endlessly nested folders storing my neatly sorted files. Normally, it would be a pain to save something in the right place, but using this trick saves me a bunch of time every day. Now it can do the same for you, too.
6.
Find my pointer
Foundry
You know you’re having one of those days when even locating your mouse pointer on your Mac’s screen can feel like a chore. The problem is exacerbated if you’re using multiple monitors, where finding the pointer can seem akin to a wild goose chase.
Thankfully, Apple has come up with a brilliantly elegant solution to the problem: just shake your mouse. As you rapidly wiggle it side to side, your mouse pointer is blown up to gargantuan proportions, helping you locate it in a quick second. Once you stop the movement, your pointer returns to normal, safely held under your watchful eye from now on.
7.
Quick Look
Foundry
You might already be familiar with Quick Look, which allows you to click a file and press the Space bar to get a handy preview of the file in question. But did you know that Quick Look can do much more than just provide a peek at the file?
The next time you open an image with Quick Look, head over to the top-right corner of the preview window, where you’ll see some useful editing tools, including a rotate button and a share option. You can open the file in the Preview app, or detect and highlight any text that might be present using the button in the bottom-right corner.
But the more useful option is the markup button. Click this and you’ll be able to draw on your image, add text, drop in a saved signature, crop it, add a comment, send it to your iPhone, and much more., without having to open the image in an app. If you just want to make a few simple changes, Quick Look could be all you need.
8.
Unlock with Apple Watch
Foundry
Apple devices are great on their own, but just like the advice your high school coach probably once gave you, they work even better as a team. One of the best examples of this is what happens when you pair up your Mac with an Apple Watch.
When these two devices are linked, you can automatically unlock your Mac and compatible apps simply by wearing your Watch. As long as your Apple Watch us unlocked, you’ll be able to log into your Mac when it wakes without raising a finger (note that this won’t work the first time you switch on your Mac; you need to have logged in once already).
Despite the obvious utility of this feature, it’s not enabled by default. To turn it on, you need to open the System Settings app on your Mac and head to Touch ID & Password (or Login Password, depending on your Mac). Wedbush raises its Apple price target to $350 over AI expectations and staff changes Investment firm Wedbush has increased its Apple price target both because of its belief that changes in executives mean that Apple Intelligence will succeed in 2026.iPhone 17 Pro models continue to be a hitIn October 2025, Wedbush raised its Apple target from $310 to $320, specifically because of sales of the iPhone 17 range. Now its analysts say that these latest iPhones are continuing to be a success, but also that there is now to be a sea change for Apple Intelligence.Apple has long said that an Apple Intelligence-enhanced Siri will debut in 2026, but Wedbush is more focused on the expected partnership with Google Gemini. In a note to investors seen by AppleInsider, the company says it expects Apple to formally announce the partnership in early 2026. Continue Reading on AppleInsider | Discuss on our Forums
The iPhone SE is obsolete, and so is the last hope for a ‘normal’ iPhone Macworld
In “Wow, I feel old” news last week, Apple officially moved the original iPhone SE from the vintage to the obsolete list. That’s not just a nominal change; while vintage products can still access a limited range of repair services, obsolete ones are completely left out in the cold. At the ripe old age of nine (and the regulation seven years after it was dropped from sale), the SE has been declared an antique on borrowed time.
As I discussed in our news coverage, this is a tricky moment for those who still use the 2016 SE and likely won’t be able to for much longer; official replacement parts won’t be available anymore, and non-official ones can be a bit of a lottery. It might be time to consider an upgrade. And the good news is that, after nine years of even quite slow tech development, whatever you buy next is going to feel like a Rolls-Royce.
Still, the original SE was a good idea and a more-than-decent smartphone, and it remains a source of dissatisfaction for me that it led to only three things: one excellent successor, one bad successor, and a sense of bitter regret. Earlier this year, the third and apparently final SE was killed off in favor of the iPhone 16e, a misconceived product that isn’t exactly a disaster but certainly doesn’t do the things that made us love the 2016 and 2020 iterations of the SE.
The glory days of the SE coincided with two changes in smartphone design: on an industry-wide level, from small to large handsets and displays; and at Apple Park, from the Home button to the Home indicator. In both cases, the SE offered consumers a way to hang onto the past while saving money. The iPhone X came out a year after the first SE, and instantly signalled a brave new world of Apple handsets… but like most brave new worlds, not everyone liked it. And the SE–small, cheap, decently powerful, and blessed with the reassurance of a press-in-case-of-emergency button–suddenly had a role as the anti-future candidate. It was the iPhone X’s job to lead the way, but it was the SE’s job to gather up the stragglers.
Yet despite hitting paydirt with the peerless second model, Apple never quite seemed to understand the attraction of the SE. Otherwise how do you explain the fumbled third generation?
The winning formula contained three factors: fairly fast performance; a small and somewhat older and smaller chassis design; and a low price. It was a carefully calibrated balancing act. But for the 3rd-gen SE, Apple jacked up the price, upgraded the processor to the extent that it was faster than $1,000 Android phones, and left the physical design untouched, so it moved from “charmingly old-fashioned” to “wildly outdated.” Maybe Apple never understood the formula. Or maybe it just didn’t want to get good at selling low-margin phones.
Perhaps the SE’s glory days were only possible because the smartphone industry was going through a couple of specific design evolutions: ones that, for a time, a significant proportion of customers would actively prefer to avoid. An appealing and successful SE today wouldn’t, in my opinion, have a Home button. But I think there are niches where Apple could find space for a fourth SE, and appeal to customers who don’t think the iPhone 16e is for them.
One is size. I don’t think the market for small phones has vanished, yet smartphone makers cater to this demographic less than ever. Apple would point to the apparently unsuccessful iPhone 12 and 13 mini, but they were premium phones. Apple hasn’t taken another swing at a small, cheap iPhone. Again, perhaps it doesn’t want to.
Another, which will probably become relevant at Apple Park next year, is foldables. If Apple does indeed enter the folding phone market, expect wider shifts in both supply and demand. But the demand for a “normal” phone won’t vanish, and we’ll find ourselves with another niche for older-fashioned design, ready for the 4th-gen iPhone SE to slide in and clean up. Just as long as Apple remembers that the budget price tag is just as much a part of the SE’s appeal as its retro design.
But while we wait for the iPhone Fold, here’s one more idea for an anti-future iPhone. Just as big-screen smartphones were everywhere in 2017, AI is omnipresent in 2025. How about an iPhone that’s guaranteed Apple Intelligence-free? I know I’d pay $429 to never see another Genmoji. Do with that what you will, Tim.
