ATI bets new strategy will increase market share while prices fall

ATI today announced a new business strategy that will see several different board makers manufacture, distribute, and brand video cards featuring ATI’s technology. Rival chip maker nVIDIA has successfully employed a similar strategy, managing to take away a significant amount of market share from ATI. ATI anticipates the move will increase the proliferation of its cards while the inner-brand competition will lower prices.

Bertelsmann targets Myplay

Bertelsmann AG, the company that acquired online music reseller CDNow and invested US$50 million in Napster, will announce on Wednesday that it has acquired Myplay, a Web site that allows users to store digital music online. Myplay has attracted more than 5 million users since it debuted in May 1999 — the company was founded by two former Apple employees.

Free Software Foundation to hit back at Microsoft

Richard Stallman, founder of the Free Software Foundation, will hit back at Microsoft and more specifically at one of the company’s Vice President’s, Craig Mundie, ZDNet UK is reporting. Earlier this month Mundie made some disparaging comments about the open source code movement in favor of the intellectual property of commercial companies. “Someone suggested that I be invited to respond,” Stallman said, and he accepted.
