Motorola today posted a third-quarter loss of US$153 million, as revenue for the quarter tumbled from $9.49 billion in the previous year to $7.41 billion. This marks the third consecutive quarter that Motorola has posted a loss. The company, which develops and manufactures some of the PowerPC chips used in Apple’s systems, blamed weak wireless network equipment and semiconductor markets for the disappointing results.

Frank Reiff has released A Better Finder Rename 4.1, an update to the contextual menu plug-in for quickly renaming multiple files at a time. The new version adds a feature for adding formatted numbers to existing file names. A Better Finder Rename is compatible with Mac OS 8/9 and Mac OS X, and costs US$14.95.

BBEdit 6.1.2+ corrects a minor problem under Mac OS X 10.1 that would prevent files from being added to the Recent Items menu. BBEdit is a robust text editor that sells for US$119.

The Supreme Court, without comment, has denied Microsoft’s request to hear an appeal of an appellate court ruling that found the company illegally maintained its operating system monopoly. The Supreme Court’s decision was widely expected.
