iPad development course, tutorials offered at EDUmobile

EDUmobile has extended its iPhone Programming Course to include iPad development topics. The new iPad training module will be provided to all candidates of the iPhone Course at no additional cost.

The module will cover a range of topics to help developers understand key differentiators and unique aspects of iPad development as compared to iPhone development. Developers can learn how to create an iPad application from scratch on the iPad SDK (software developer kit) and more.

Are optical disks becoming obsolete?

Earlier this month, Mac guru Ted Landau blogged (http://www.macobserver.com/tmo/article/who_needs_an_optical_drive_anymore_not_me/) that he doesn’t need an optical drive anymore. That’s an interesting premise, but, unlike Ted, I don’t think I’m ready to take that plunge.

Ted says that broadband Internet connections, the iTunes Store, the Apple TV, the iPad and such technologies have made it possible for him to do all the things he once needed an optical disk for (installing new software, playing movie and music disks, burning backup data, etc.) without the physical media.

iPad review, part three: Photos, eBooks, digital Newspapers

In this, the third part of our four-part review, we’ll look at the iPad as a photo viewing and ebook device, as well as device for reading digital newspapers. The synopsis: it’s good for all these purposes — and excellent at two of ’em.

Photos for iPad syncs with iPhoto on a Mac (at least up to a point) and transfers your pics onto the new Apple device. Your photo albums appear as little stacks you can pinch to preview. Tap a stack, and the whole album opens up. From there you can scroll through thumbnails. Tap to view full screen or flip through photos one at a time.

Macsimum Poll: do you still need an optical (CD/DVD drive) on your Mac?

In this week’s poll, we’re asking if you still need an optical (ie CD/DVD drive) on your Mac. Some folks say that broadband Internet connections, the iTunes Store, the Apple TV, the iPad and such technologies eliminates the need for one.

The poll is located on the right hand side of the home page beneath the Macsimum Opinion column. In last week’s poll, we asked if you planned on buying ebooks on the iPad. Sixty-seven percent of you said “yes,” 7% said “no,” and 26% said it depended on the pricing.
