“Schmigadoon!” officially helped Apple TV achieve EGOT status at Sunday’s Tony Awards, crowning the achievement by winning Best Musical, reports Deadline.
The show led the field with 12 nominations and came away with four wins, including Best Book of a Musical, Best Original Score and Best Orchestrations along with the night’s big prize. The win means Apple TV has EGOT [Emmy-Grammy-Oscar-Tony] status, having won at least one award in all four major American entertainment awards: an Emmy for television, a Grammy for music, an Oscar for film, and a Tony for Broadway theater.
“Schmigadoon!” premiered on Apple TV in 2021 and ran for two seasons, ending in 2023. In January 2024, show creator Cinco Paul confirmed that, although the third season had already been written with 25 new songs, Apple decided not to move forward with it.
As noted by Deadline, Apple TV’s first step toward the EGOT milestone began in 2020 with Billy Crudup’s Emmy win for Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for “The Morning Show.” A little less than two years later, “CODA” won three Oscars, including Best Picture.
The Grammy fell into place in February of this year, with Chris Stapleton’s song “Bad As I Used to Be,” from the film F1, capturing Best Country Solo Performance. “Ted Lasso” and “The Studio have also won Emmy trophies in the Best Comedy Series category.
