Vemedio’s (www.http://vemedio.com) Snowflake is a new Mac OS X app made especially for listening to Internet radio on Yosemite. It’s a lightweight app that works with thousands of radio stations worldwide that stream over the Shoutcast/Icecast streaming protocol and comes with 20,000 radio stations already included. You can import URLs to custom streams.

Vemedio took the radio streaming technology from its Snowtape product, and enhanced it by improving track detection, adding support for external speakers and giving it a 10-band equalizer. The company also improved low level stuff like connection reliability and stream buffering, as well as solving an issue of finding suitable radio streams by developing a new stream directory from scratch.”

The new directory works mainly automatic using crowd sourcing to find new or inactive streams. The result is a much more reliable system that’s more resilient to stream URL changes and temporary server issues. And the more folks use it, the better this technology becomes.

Snowflake costs US$9.99. For this price, you get the ability to stream over USB, Airplay, Bluetooth, Thunderbolt, Firewire, etc and enhance the sound using the 10-band equalizer.
