The iPhone captured the largest share of mobile phones shipments in Japan for the first time in the October-December quarter, accounting for 26.6 %, due to the popularity of the iPhone 4S smartphone model, reports “The Mainichi Daily News” (, citing info from the IDC Japan research group.

Fujitsu, which took over the mobile phone operations of Toshiba , came second with an 18.3% share and Sharp ranked third with 15.7%. Total shipments in Japan surged 15.2% from a year earlier to 10.65 million units; smartphones accounted for 64.7% of this number.
