Apple devices lead Android in BBC streaming

A Freedom of Information request to the BBC has revealed that streaming to Apple’s mobile devices is currently significantly more popular than iPlayer on Google Android devices, reports “Macworld UK” (http://www.macworld.co.uk/ipod-itunes/news/?newsid=3237438).

Ben Griffiths of the WhatDoTheyKnow web site made the request earlier this year, with the BBC providing figures for July in response, the article adds. The data covered both streaming to Apple iOS devices — iPhone, iPod touch and iPad — and Android 2.2 smartphones using flash 10.1 technology.

VueScan for Mac OS X updated to version 8.6.55

Hamrick Software has released Vuescan 8.6.55, a new version of the VueScan software for Mac OS X that’s designed to let users produce better digital images from color snapshots, negatives, slides and documents. The new version adds support for the Canon LIDE 110 and LIDE 2010 scanners.

The Standard Edition of VueScan costs US$39.95 and the Professional Edition is $79.95 for a single user license. Multi-user licenses are available. A fully functional, trial copy of VueScan is available for download from the Hamrick web site (http://www.hamrick.com).

Sandy Bridge chips could bring Blu-ray playback, USB 3.0 to the Mac

At a recent developer conference, Intel said its next-generation laptop chips based on the Sandy Bridge architecture will be able to play Blu-ray 3D movies while preserving battery life. Could this mean Blu-ray playback might finally arrive on the Mac? Probably, not but I’ll keep hoping.

You won’t need to buy a separate graphics processor to specifically view 3D content. Sandy Bridge chips are slated to go into production later this year, and computers with ’em could arrive in the first half of next year.
