Western Digital (http://www.wdc.com) is shipping its first consumer-oriented solid state drive (SSD) with the new WD SiliconEdge 2.5-inch SSD family. The company has also introduced WD SiliconDrive N1x 2.5-inch SSD family.

WD SiliconEdge Blue SSDs are available in capacities up to 256GB, feature a native SATA 3.0 gigabits per second (Gb/s) interface with read speeds up to 250MB per second (MB/second) and write transfer rates up to 170 MB/second. F

WD SiliconEdge Blue SSDs are available through select distributors and resellers. The manufacturers suggested retail price for WD SiliconEdge Blue SSD 64GB capacity is US$279, the 128GB capacity is $529, and the 256GB capacity is $999.

The WD SiliconDrive family is designed for embedded system OEM (original equipment manufacturer) applications and are single-level cell (SLC)-based systems. The products feature a native SATA 3.0 gigabits per second (Gb/second) interface with target read speeds up to 240MB per second (MB/s) and write transfer rates up to 140 MB/s in capacities up to 128GB.
