Komodo Edit Now Open Source

ActiveState’s popular and free multi-language editor is open sourced

March 6, 2008, Vancouver, BC – ActiveState today announced an updated,
open-sourced release of Komodo Edit, the popular and free editor for
dynamic languages including Perl, PHP, Python, Ruby, and Tcl, plus support
for browser-side code including JavaScript, CSS, HTML, and XML.

Komodo Edit, based on the award-winning Komodo IDE, offers sophisticated
support for all major scripting languages, including in-depth autocomplete
and calltips, multi-language file support, syntax coloring and syntax
checking, Vi emulation, and Emacs key bindings. Komodo Edit is built on the
Mozilla code base, and is now licensed under the same terms as Firefox:
(http://www.mozilla.org/MPL/MPL-1.1.html) Mozilla Public License (MPL),
(http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl.html) GNU General Public License (GPL),
and (http://www.gnu.org/licenses/lgpl.html) GNU Lesser Public License
(LGPL).

“ActiveState was built on open source, and we’re excited to be giving back
by adding Komodo Edit to the open source software community,” said Komodo
Product Manager Shane Caraveo. “Komodo Edit users can now benefit from all
the features that open source implies-usage flexibility, community
development, and increased innovation-as well as the support of
ActiveState. Plus, Komodo Edit enters the open source arena fully tested
and with complete documentation. The few things that we were not able to
open-source in Komodo Edit will be made available as free (as in beer)
extensions. ”

In addition to open-sourcing Komodo Edit, the latest release includes a
completely redesigned Find and Replace functionality with new features,
including Find in Project, Replace in Files, multi-line Find and Replace,
fixes for regular expression searches, and a new Find sub-system that
properly handles Unicode-encoded files and skipping binary files.

Komodo Edit 4.3 also includes a new Abbreviations feature that inserts
snippets from the Toolbox at the touch of a key; several useful default
snippets are included, and additional snippets can be added easily.
