EMC acquires Retrospect maker Dantz

EMC Corporation today announced the acquisition of Dantz, the developer of the Retrospect backup and recovery software for Mac OS X. Dantz, founded in 1984, will continue to operate in Walnut Creek, California. Dantz’s president and CEO, Larry Zulch, will report to Dave DeWalt and Mark Lewis, co-leaders of the EMC Software Group. EMC acquired Dantz in a cash transaction valued at less than US$50 million. Dantz is EMC’s 15th software acquisition since the beginning of 2000.

MXS today announced the availability of Cherry OS, a “software translator” that the company claims allows you to install and run Mac OS X 10.3 (Panther) on a PC. “Cherry OS runs Panther as a virtual machine on your Windows PC,” explains the developer. “This virtual machine has full network capabilities including the ability to share folders and access the Web.

Microsoft releases Office 2004 Service Pack 1

Microsoft’s Macintosh Business Unit (Mac BU) today released Service Pack 1 for Office 2004 for Mac via Microsoft AutoUpdate. The update addresses potential security issues and bugs, according to Microsoft. The new version offers support for the Microsoft Error Reporting Protocol (MERP), which allows users to communicate bug data anonymously to Microsoft, enabling efficient fixes and helping increase the overall stability of Office 2004.
