Mail Factory 1.4 adds direct import from FileMaker

BeLight Software has released Mail Factory 1.4, a new version of its program to design and print envelopes, address and shipping labels. This latest update adds direct data import from FileMaker databases, recognition of addresses pasted from other applications (such as Microsoft Word, Safari, and Apple Mail), the ability to crop images, support for Mac OS X System Services, and several other improvements. Mail Factory requires Mac OS X 10.2 or later and sells for US$29.95.

Digidesign and O’Reilly on Inside Mac Radio

Apple, Jobs up for Billboard Digital Entertainment Awards

Apple has been nominated for three Billboard 2004 Digital Entertainment Awards, which will be presented on Nov. 5 in Los Angeles. The company is up for Innovator of the Year, Brand of the Year, and Best Downloadable or Subscription Music Service. Apple CEO Steve Jobs was also nominated for Visionary of the Year. In the Innovator of the Year category, Apple’s iTunes will go up against BitTorrent, Sony’s Eyetoy, and XM Radio. In the Brand of the Year category, Apple will compete with EA Sports, Virgin Mobile, and XM Radio.

Sony quietly opening retail stores across U.S.

Following Apple’s lead, Sony has quietly opened seven retail stores across the U.S. since launching its first last year. The company said it plans to open its 11th and 12th stores this month, and expects to have about 30 Sony Style stores open by April 2006. Some electronics retailers worry they will lose sales because of the new stores, and fear other manufacturers will follow suit and open their own stores too.

Tech earnings: Google, Microsoft, Amazon

In its first quarterly earnings report as a public company, Google posted a profit of US$52 million, or 19 cents per share, during the three months ended in September. This compares to $20.4 million, or 8 cents per share, at the same time last year. Meanwhile, Microsoft’s earnings rose to $2.9 billion, or 27 cents per share, for its first fiscal quarter–up from a profit of $2.6 billion, or 24 cents per share, a year ago.
