Universal digitizes entire European music catalog

Vivendi Universal’s music division today said it has “completed a two-year project to position digital music at the heart of its content management and delivery systems,” reports Dow Jones. The recordings total about 300,000 tracks from more than 25,000 albums, with about 5,000 artists from more than 20 countries represented. “2004 will see an explosion in legitimate music-download services, and Universal is aggressively and uniquely placed to provide these services, and their customers, with what they really want — the widest possible selection of our music at the highest possible quality, digitized at source,” said Universal Music International Executive Vice President Boyd Muir in the story.
