Apple releases new Mac OS X security update

Apple today released Security Update 2003-03-03 for Mac OS X 10.2 (Jaguar) or later via the Software Update utility. It “addresses a security issue in sendmail where a remote individual could gain access and control of the system. Although sendmail is off by default in Mac OS, it is recommended that all users install this Security Update. This update also includes a newer version of OpenSSL that provides improved data confidentiality by addressing a recently-discovered security issue.”

Acme Made introduces new PowerBook products

Acme Made has announced the release of two new products for Apple’s PowerBook — the iCover and the Slim. The iCover is a thin sleeve designed to easily slip over the PowerBook’s display and protect it from indentations the keyboard leaves when the unit is closed. The iCover is constructed from a synthetic micro-suede that is washable. It retails for US$19.99 and comes in 12, 15 and 17-inch sizes.

Sony announces new FireWire AIT drive

Sony today introduced an external Advanced Intelligent Tape (AIT) drive that features both USB 2.0 and FireWire connectors for plug-and-play connectivity with most Macs and PCs. It offers maximum compressed capacities from 91 to 130GB and maximum native data transfer rates from 4 to 6MB per second. The drive is available now for US$899.
