Shares of Apple fell more than 8 percent, or US$1.17, to $13.20 Friday — the biggest one-day percentage drop for the stock since last July — on concern that its talks with Vivendi to buy the Universal Music unit could yield a deal that would “deplete Apple’s cash trove and push it into an uncertain and troubled market,” reports Reuters.

Reuters: Davis would drop Vivendi bid on Apple deal

In what could be a blow to Apple’s reported plans to buy Universal Music, billionaire oilman Marvin Davis would drop his US$15 billion bid to acquire the entertainment assets of Vivendi Universal if it sells the music unit to Apple, according to Reuters. In a move to reduce debt, Vivendi seeks to raise $7 billion this year by selling assets that would include some or all of its Universal film, television, theme park and music units.

MandrakeSoft has announced the immediate availability of Mandrake Linux 9.1 for PPC (codenamed “Bamboo”). This new release provides all Mandrake 9.1 features, including Apache 2, “Zeroconf” network support (aka Rendezvous) and WiFi support. Mandrake 9.1 for PPC also provides a simplified graphical installer, a new “MandrakeGalaxy” theme, and anti-aliased fonts. Mandrake 9.1 PPC is based on Linux kernel 2.4.21 and includes XFree86 4.3.0, KDE 3.1, GNOME 2.2, OpenOffice.org 1.0.2, Mozilla 1.3, Apache 2, and Samba 2.2.7.
