Acquisition 0.92 is the latest version of Xlife’s Mac OS X client for the gnutella peer-to-peer file sharing network. It supports modern gnutella features such as Ultrapeers, swarm (multi-source) downloads, download resumption, and distributed network discovery. The new version brings important protocol changes including support for compressed message streams. It also includes various aesthetic and stability fixes. Acquisition requires Mac OS X 10.2 (Jaguar) and is US$15 shareware.

Amazon ‘likeliest candidate’ to take on iTunes store

Microsoft scores digital media victory

C|net notes that AOL’s settlement with Microsoft yesterday helps the software giant extend its digital media technology even further. “The deal allows — but does not require — AOL Time Warner to use Microsoft’s Windows Media 9 Series software and future versions of the multimedia technology, including its digital rights management (DRM) tool for securing music and video files from piracy,” notes the article.

Iconfactory gains new artist, releases ‘At the Beach’ icons

The Iconfactory today announced that a new icon artist, Anthony Piraino, has joined their “pixel-pushing” team. He is known in the Mac icon community from his One-button Mouse Web site, which offers desktop pictures and icons sets. To mark his official introduction at the Iconfactory, Piraino has released his first Iconfactory icon collection — “At the Beach.” The “fun and light-hearted” set is available today for both Mac OS X and Windows XP.
