Apple director speaking at digital music event

Peter Lowe, Apple’s director of marketing for applications and services, will be a keynote speaker at Music 2.0, a digital music industry event taking place Dec. 8-9 in Los Angeles. Others attending to the event include Rob Glaser, CEO of RealNetworks; Chris Gorog, CEO Roxio/Napster; Phil Wiser, CTO Sony Music; and representatives from the RIAA, record labels, Electronic Frontier Foundation, and more than 50 other industry speakers.

Xcode developer tools updated

Apple has released the first update to Xcode, its set of powerful developer tools for Mac OS X. Version 1.0.1 addresses an issue in the Xcode IDE that could potentially lead to data corruption or the loss of files particularly when source files contain illegal characters. According to Apple, the update is strongly recommended for all Xcode users. It is available via the Mac OS X Software Update preference pane.

Apple releases new Panther security update

Apple on Tuesday released Security Update 2003-11-04 for Mac OS X 10.3 Panther. The update addresses a potential vulnerability with the Terminal application in Mac OS X 10.3 and Mac OS X Server 10.3 that could allow unauthorized access to a system. Security Update 2003-11-04 is available via the Mac OS X Software Update preference pane. Apple has yet to address the security flaws in Mac OS X Jaguar (v10.2.8 and lower) that were uncovered last week.

Avid Xpress DV pricing cut

Avid Technology today announced a new version of its award-winning Avid Xpress DV software that will be priced at US$695 (previously $1,699). “This new price enables a much wider audience of DV (digital video) users to take advantage of a professional-strength tool that offers the Avid industry-standard editing interface and more than 100 real-time effects, including automatic expert color correction,” Avid said. The new version of Avid Xpress DV is expected to ship on November 15.
