DivXNetworks today announced the release of DivX for Mac 5.1, the latest Mac version of the DivX video compression technology. Version 5.1 offers improvements in speed, performance, and visual quality, such as: decoder re-architecture (up to 100% faster, according to the press release), a new feedback mode, new psychovisual modeling, two new high-quality modes, and a new graphical user interface. DivX 5.1 for Mac is available to consumers in two versions.

Sony on Tuesday detailed plans for a new handheld gaming device that combines a digital music and video player, and said it would also launch a rival to Apple’s iPod next year for as little as US$60. Sony officials credited Apple and Steve Jobs for the success of the iPod, but said the “PSP” — due out before the end of 2004 — will offer more, including the ability to watch music videos as well as listen to digital tracks.
