Apple’s contract with the State of Maine, which will see 36,000 iBooks distributed to seventh and eighth grade students in the state’s public schools this Fall, is valued at $37.2 million and extends over four years, according to Wired. The education order, which is the largest in history, will be paid for by a $30 million Maine Learning Technology Endowment already approved by the state, and $9 million from the Maine School and Library Network.

Canto has announced an upgraded version of Cumulus 5.5, its digital asset management system. New features include improved IPTC support, server/client asset transfer, integrated URL AssetStore and ZIP AssetStore, remote administration, and more. Cumulus 5.5 will be available in early February in three separate versions: Single User Edition (US$99.95), Workgroup Edition ($995 for server, $295 per client) and Enterprise Edition (pricing available upon request).

Chaotic Software has released AutoTextTyper 3.0, a new version of its US$10 contextual menu plugin for Mac OS 8/9 that lets users easily add commonly used phrases of text wherever needed. Version 3.0 adds support for a new “AutoDocuments” feature, which allows text files or clippings to be auto-typed, among other features.

OpenLink Software today released version 4.2 of its Universal Data Access Drivers Suite for Mac OS X. The new release includes high-performance Single-Tier Drivers that enable direct access to backend database engines without the installation of any additional software on the Mac OS X clients or the backend database server machines.
