Apple today announced that more than 80 million people downloaded QuickTime in 2001, exceeding the 75 million who downloaded RealOne and RealPlayer from RealNetworks. QuickTime 5 is on target to reach 100 million downloads by April, although readers should note these numbers are not representative of daily usage.

Free utility allows for multiple iPhoto libraries

The Justice Department and Microsoft today released a report summarizing comments received from the public regarding the landmark antitrust settlement, according to c|net. Among the 30,000 responses, 15,000 were against the settlement, 7,500 were in favor, and 7,000 expressed no sentiment either way. 1,250 were unrelated to the case. The settling parties are scheduled to appear before U.S. District Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly on Friday.

Trans Intl. ships 60GB portable drive

Trans Intl. has begun shipping IBM’s 60GB 2.5-inch hard drive for PowerBook G3 and G4 laptops. The drive spins at 5400 RPM and features transfer rates up to 32MB/sec, a high shock rating, quiet operation, and low power consumption. The new drive is also available as an external FireWire portable unit. The internal configuration is available for US$479, while the external FireWire configuration sells for $579.
