Sorenson Thursday announced that it had begun shipping the Windows versions of Sorenson Squeeze for QuickTime and Macromedia Flash MX. Mac OS 9/X versions of the video compression products are expected to ship in the second quarter of 2002. Sorenson also announced that Sorenson Squeeze for Windows now includes the Sorenson Video 3.1 Professional codec.

Macromedia today began shipping Flash MX, the new version of its rich media development environment. Flash MX sports native Mac OS X compatibility, video support, new graphic design tools, a customizable ActionScript editor, and a plethora of other features. The software is available for US$499, with upgrades priced at $199.

Sonnet today introduced a 466MHz PowerPC G3 upgrade for Apple’s PowerBook 1400 series. The upgrade features 1MB of L2 cache and delivers a purported eleven-fold increase in performance over the stock 117MHz PowerPC 603e processor. The Crescendo/PB G3 466-1M is compatible with Mac OS 7.5.3 through Mac OS 9.1 and is available now for US$299.95, replacing the previous 400MHz upgrade.

Adobe this afternoon reported a first quarter net profit of US$49.8 million, down 29 percent from the year-ago quarter, on revenues of $267.9 million, a decline of 19 percent. The earnings were in line with revised expectations. Adobe attributed the “solid” quarter to a 20 percent year-over-year increase in sales of Acrobat, the company’s leading PDF software.

Nick Hexum, frontman for the popular group 311, mentions in passing in a Hartford Advocate article that he’s also the happy owner of an iPod, as noted by reader Jason Stephens. “I had this like really intense sort of Beatles study that I’d set up for myself, where I put every Beatles album on my iPod,” Hexum told the publication when explaining his more recent influences.
