VersionTracker today announced VersionTracker Plus, a new subscription-based service that allows users to track and monitor software updates, view top downloads and recommended downloads, browse VersionTracker without advertisements, and more. VersionTracker also announced VersionTracker Pro 2.0, a new version of its more robust subscription-based service.

Apple is one of 50 public companies on this year’s Red Herring 100, a list of innovative companies with attractive financials that appear “poised to disrupt current markets, or to create entirely new ones.” Tech heavyweights Dell, IBM, Microsoft, NVIDIA, Oracle, Sony, and Sun also are on the list.

Subband Software has released MacAmp Lite X, the first Mac OS X release of its lightweight MP3 player. Written natively in Cocoa, the software offers a number of robust features in a package that occupies a minimal amount of space on the screen and requires less processing power than other players. MacAmp Lite X is US$12 shareware.

Wolfram Research recently released webMathematica for Mac OS X, its application for easily creating dynamic computations and visualizes on the Web, as noted by MacCentral. webMathematica employs Java Servlet technology and essentially allows for the use of Mathematica applications through a Web browser.

The State of Maine’s plan to furnish seventh and eighth grade students with iBooks remains secure for the time being even as the State faces a US$180 million budget shortfall, according to The Bangor Daily News, as noted by MacSurfer.
