University of Delaware students head to Antarctica equipped with Macs

A group of photojournalism students from the University of Delaware will voyage to Antarctica next month with gear from Apple and Canon to “learn about and photograph a place that few ever have seen.” The News Journal reports that the students will post their results live to the Internet at the class Web site, using donated equipment. Apple has given eight laptops to the class, Canon has provided 18 digital cameras and lenses, and CNN has loaned two satellite phones.

Select Macs to boot Mac OS 9 until June 2003

Apple today confirmed that several of its computers would be able to boot into Mac OS 9 until June 2003, reports MacCentral. “To accommodate a minority of our pro customers still running Mac OS 9 applications such as QuarkXPress, Apple will continue to offer a 1.25 GHz dual processor Power Mac that will boot into Mac OS 9 until June 30, 2003,” Apple said in a statement.

FileMaker up for two Codie Awards

FileMaker, the database software subsidiary of Apple, has had two of its products honored as finalists for the 2003 Codie Awards by the Software & Information Industry Association (SIIA). FileMaker Pro 6 is a finalist for Best Business Productivity Product or Service, and FileMaker Pro 6 Unlimited is a Best Numeric/Database Application finalist.
