Pioneer announced today that many of its DVD-R/RW drives will require a firmware update in order to avoid potential damage to the mechanisms. The problem occurs when the drives are used with new 4x DVD-R and 2x DVD-RW high-speed discs, which were recently approved by the DVD Forum. Pioneer’s drives are used in systems from several companies, including Apple and Sony. Users should download the free update, which can be found on Pioneer’s Web site, prior to using the new discs. Please note that the Mac update section was unavailable at the time of this posting.
