A New York Times article (free subscription required) documents the missing “Happy Mac” icon from Mac OS X 10.2 (Jaguar). The smiling icon has graced the startup screen of Macs for 18 years. “He was carried off into the night,” said Susan Kare, the graphic artist who was part of the original Macintosh design team and who drew the original Happy Mac icon. “There isn’t even a milk carton that reads, ‘Have you seen this icon?’ ”
