The European Union today approved a law that will impose higher taxes on non-EU suppliers of digitally-delivered (downloaded) software and some radio and television services sold to European customers, according to c|net. Prior to the law, European customers could avoid paying Value Added Tax (VAT) by purchasing such items from non-EU nations. The EU maintains the law is needed in order to provide a more level playing field for European providers of such services, although some countries, including the United States, and consumers have expressed concern over the decision.
