Motorolla has officially renamed the PowerPC G5 processor the PowerPC 8500, after originally denoting the processor as the 7500. “It’s a sign that Motorola is turning its sights even further away from the desktop market – represented by the ‘7’ in its chip nomenclature – to the embedded arena – which is essentially what the ‘8’ indicates,” explains The Register article. Targeted clock speed for the chip, which is still in development, has changed to 800MHz to 2GHz+, after being billed simply as “2GHz+” previously.
