Farallon to Develop Ethernet PC Card Drivers for eMate and MessagePad 2000

Newton, Inc. Selects Farallon as Strategic Networking Partner

ALAMEDA, Calif., June 30, 1997 – Farallon Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ:
FRLN) today announced that it has been chosen by Newton, Inc., Apple
Computer’s wholly owned subsidiary, to develop Ethernet PC Card drivers for
Newton-based devices such as the eMate 300 and MessagePad 2000. The
Ethernet PC Card drivers will be available in conjunction with the
September release of the Newton Internet Enabler 2.0 (NIE 2.0) and will
enable users to directly connect their eMates and MessagePads to existing
Ethernet networks. Farallon is the only vendor to provide PC Cards that
can be used in a Newton-based device, a PowerBook and a PC Notebook.

“Because Farallon is the premier provider of plug-and-play networking
solutions for the education market, it was a natural decision for us to ask
them to develop Ethernet PC Card drivers for our Apple eMate,” said Robert
Kondrk, senior manager of Education Product Marketing at Apple Computer,

“We are pleased to enhance our PC Card support to include Newton devices,”
said Ken Haase, product manager at Farallon Communications, Inc.
“Customers can confidently standardize on Farallon PC Cards today for their
PowerBooks and PC Notebooks and know that in September, they will also be
able to use them in their eMate or MessagePad 2000.”

With Farallon’s Ethernet PC Cards, eMate education users will be able to
easily access their email, the World Wide Web and the school network with
native TCP/IP support over the existing Ethernet network, eliminating the
need for special wiring or additional network routers or bridges. In
addition, the Ethernet PC Cards will support AppleTalk over Ethernet.
AppleTalk support will allow users to print directly on the Ethernet
network without having to install separate printers just for the eMates.
It will also improve backups and file transfers to Macintoshes on the
Ethernet network using the eMate Classroom Connection Kit.

“We are pleased to team with Farallon, a leading provider of Macintosh
networking products,” said Sandy Benett, Chief Operating Officer at Newton,
Inc. “With the release of NIE 2.0 and Farallon’s development of Ethernet
PC Card drivers, our eMate and MessagePad 2000 customers will be able to
take advantage of a more robust networking solution.”
