Rumor: Next-gen iPhone could see increased thickness...

The next-gen iPhone could be a bit thicker than the current model.

A current rumor has it that one planned change for the 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch iPhones expected next month is a material return from aluminum backs to glass, and now a new rumor claims that shift will result in a slightly thicker casing.

Giga Apple, a German web blog, has cited a case maker who claims to have contacts within iPhone maker Foxconn. The blog has reported at least a 0.1mm increase in thickness. The blog quoted a leaked spec document that stated that the upcoming iPhone 7s will have a slight increase on all dimensions.

Apple has increased the thickness of its iPhone models in the past, such as when the iPhone 6 went to the iPhone 6s and increased the thickness by 0.2mm due to 3D Touch and the pressure sensitive display. This year the change, if true, is expected to be due to the shift to glass from aluminum which serves as a pass through for rumored wireless (inductive) charging....

The ROMOSS UPower 10000mAh Power Bank — which retails for $49.99 but can be obtained at Amazon for less — is a two-in-one hybrid power supply that comes in handy if you need a home or travel charger for just two gadgets.

With its “smart” dual USB output (5V/1A and 5V/2.1A), you can charge, for instance, an iPhone and an iPad simultaneously. I charged my iPhone 7s about four times and my wife’s iPad mini 1.4 times before having to recharge the power bank.

The UPower’s self-charging technology automatically adjusts the current and voltage. With its 5V 2.1A input, it can get fully charged in under seven hours. Four LED lights indicates battery level. The UPower enters dormant mode automatically...

Apple patent involves Siri helping with...

Siri, Apple’s personal digital assistant, may one day help you determine why you’re having problems with the accessibility features on an iOS, watchOS, tvOS and perhaps even a macOS device. The company has been granted a patent (number 9,733,821) for “voice control to diagnose inadvertent activation of accessibility features.”

According to the patent, the electronic device in question receives a user input indicating that the user is having difficulty operating the electronic device. The device then determines whether a setting was changed on the device within a predetermined time period prior to receiving the user input. When a first setting was changed within the predetermined time period prior to receiving the user input, the device restores the changed setting to a prior setting.

Accessibility features provide solutions that allow the elderly, young children, or people with disabilities to operate electronic devices. Apple says that, while these features are...

Online consumers' preferred payment methods...

Card payments account for the largest share of e-commerce revenues in Europe, followed by e-wallets like PayPal and Apple Pay. However, research cited in a new report from Research and Markets reveals how online consumers' preferred payment methods vary dramatically across different countries.

In the UK, Belgium and France, the leading payment method is bank card. In Italy, bank cards are about equal with PayPal in usage, but online consumers from Germany and Switzerland prefer invoices at a much higher rate than cards. Across Eastern Europe, online bank card payments are increasing, but cash on delivery is still the most preferred option in countries like Romania and Hungary.

A survey cited in the report names convenience, security, and speed as the leading criteria when deciding on a payment method in Europe. When looking at the consumer decision to make payments via mobile devices, shoppers are mostly...

Notable apps and app updates for Aug. 16, 2017

On a regular basis, Apple World Today posts a list of notable new apps or app updates that have been released. They may not necessarily be new, but they're popular and deserve mention. Here are today's picks.

iOS Apps/Updates

Mobile Creators has debuted Pomodororo 1.0. Loosely based on the"Pomodoro Technique" method, the app is a minimal timer that can be used for a variety of tasks. Pomodororo is free, but does offer in-app purchases.

Selosoft has introduced Don't Hit! 1.0. In the free (but ad-supported) game, players control a triangle as it speeds through a course of chaotic twists and turns. Gravity will pull the triangle down relative to its orientation, and players must press their finger on the screen to counter the gravitational pull. Collecting cubes will...

If you have a MacBook of any sort, you may find looking down at the screen to be uncomfortable. That's right -- if the design of the Curve looks somewhat familiar, it's because Twelve South Creative Director and co-founder Andrew Green designed the original "iCurve" stand back in 2003 for Griffin Technology. As Green notes in his blog entry, "I knew someday I wanted to refresh the classic design for the...

Huawei overtakes Apple in the Central and Eastern...

Samsung led the smartphone market in Central and Eastern Europe in Q2 2017, shipping 4.9 million units, a year-on-year increase of 14%, according to Canalys. This was due to strong demand for Galaxy A and J series products, which have been updated this year, adds the research group.

China-based Huawei retook the number two spot from Apple in Central and Eastern Europe in the second quarter (Q2) of 2017. It shipped 1.8 million smartphones to take a 12% market share, beating Apple by fewer than 50,000 units. Its strength was in low-to-mid-range products, with the P10 Lite becoming its best-seller in the region.

“Huawei slipped behind Apple briefly in Q1 2017,” says Canalys Analyst Ben Stanton. “Apple did an excellent job of upselling its installed base to the iPhone 7 Plus, whereas Huawei suffered the fallout from its extremely aggressive end to 2016. It built a great deal of channel...

Aetna customers could get free Apple Watches as part...

Enlarge / Apple Watch Series 2. (credit: Valentina Palladino)

Aetna's 50,000 employees already use Apple Watches as part of their corporate wellness program, but Aetna may soon extend that perk to its customers. According to a CNBC report, the health insurer has been in talks with Apple to provide free or discounted Apple Watches to its 23 million customers as a member perk.

Aetna sees Apple Watches as a way to further encourage its customers to take more interest in leading healthier lives and tracking their diets better. Calling out diet tracking is peculiar since the Apple Watch doesn't offer diet tracking, but there are plenty of third-party apps...

Winamp’s woes: How the greatest MP3 player undid...

This is a fascinating story about how Winamp squandered its opportunity to be the dominant force in the music universe.

Great read, all the way through, but this bit amazed me:

Amazingly, given all the time elapsed, AOL still makes a decent amount of money on the site and on the program—while the company has declined to release official figures, former employees who worked on Winamp estimate its current revenue at around $6 million annually.

Wait, what? I find that astonishing.

This piece originally ran on June 24, 2012 (and Winamp finally called it quits in November 2013).

Ah, that explains it. Still, a great read.

Apple and Aetna hold secret meetings to bring the...

CNBC:

Apple and Aetna held a series of secret discussions last week to bring Apple’s health and fitness-tracking smartwatch to millions more people connected to Aetna, according to three people familiar with the matter.

The insurer, which covers 23 million, offers an Apple Watch to its 50,000 employees as part of its corporate wellness program. Now, Aetna is negotiating with Apple on a plan to offer a free or discounted Apple Watch, Apple’s wearable device, as a perk to its members.

Seems to me a brilliant move. For Apple, a discounted Apple Watch brings potential new customers to the ecosystem. For Aetna, it’s possible they’re doing this just to make money on Apple Watch sales, but more likely, they’ve run the numbers, see a cost saving with insured folks having an Apple Watch.

Apple patent filing is for a single piece iPhone...

Apple has at least considered making more cases along the lines of its iPhone 7 Smart Battery Case. The company has filed for a patent (number 9,735,595) for a “single piece case with a battery and a hinge.”

In the patent filing, Apple notes that accessory devices can be used as a protective cover for an electronic device (the iPhone) as well as provide an aesthetic appearance. And some accessory devices may include a power supply designed to provide electrical current to the smartphone. Apple says that, also, typical accessory devices include at least one layer of material disposed across the entire accessory device. For example, a region of the accessory device designed to receive the electronic device may include a rigid polymeric material, such as plastic, disposed across the entire region. This offers a continuous, uniform protection to the electronic...

Mac laptop sales are up 17.1% quarter-over-quarter

Apple sold an estimated 3.98 million Mac laptops in the second quarter of the 2017 calendar year for a quarter-on-quarter increase of 17.1%, according to TrendForce. The tech giant now ties for fifth place among the top global notebook brands, notes the market research firm.

The updated 12-inch MacBook helped expanded MacBook shipments by 17.1% from the first quarter to 3.98 million units. TrendForce also anticipates a double-digit sequential growth for third-quarter MacBook shipments as Apple will focus on the MacBook Pro series during the year’s second half.

The top five laptop companies for the first half of 2017 are HP (23.4% market share), Lenovo (20.1% market share), Dell (16.4% market share), Apple and ASUS with 10% market share each.  TrendForce says the global notebook shipments for this...

Responding to questions from the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Qualcomm has disclosed further details about the impact of an ongoing dispute with Apple.

TSMC enters mass production of 10-nanometer A11...

Processor manufacturer TSMC has reportedly entered the mass production stage of its 10-nanometer “A11” processors for Apple’s next-gen iPhone.

While the new iPhone’s ship date has yet to be announced, TSMC is said to be applying the same 10-nanometer FinFET manufacturing technique being used to make A10X chips for this year’s 10.5- and 12.9-inch iPad Pros. The A10X is in fact believed to be the first chip produced with the technique, though TSMC does have other clients.

At present, the A10 processor used in the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus handsets feature a 16-nanometer design. The smaller size of the new processor could allow for better performance in a similarly-sized package and help improve power efficiency.

The “iPhone 8” could ship as soon as next month albeit in very low quantities. Indeed it’s rumored that the phone will only start mass assembly in September, when typically Apple prefers to have a month or two under its belt for any new iPhone.

Rumor: Third-gen Apple Watch to arrive in LTE and...

KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has released a new research note and has predicted that the Apple Watch 3 will ship later this year with both LTE and non-LTE models offered. Kuo also expects the next Apple Watch will retain the same general design and not feature an obvious new form factor.

Kuo added that the Apple Watch will probably continue to ship in 38mm and 42mm size configurations.

The prediction comes 10 days after Bloomberg’s report that the Apple Watch may feature Intel modems for LTE connectivity.

Kuo’s note also added that the third-generation Apple Watch with cellular connectivity will not support 3G connections, only LTE, which will limit which markets in which it can be sold and used.

The Bloomberg story stated that AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile and Sprint were on board to support the cellular versions of the Apple Watch. Expected prices for the units are presently unknown.

KGI Securities has predicted that Apple will ship 17...
