Just how durable is the soon to be announced gold iPhone 5S? Apparently durable enough to hold its own against coins in your pocket, but watch out for knives. Jailbreak Nation got its hands on what appears to be a legit gold iPhone back and captured their abuse on video.

The Mac Observer Spin:
The gold iPhone 5S scratch test is pretty impressive. Hopefully it means the black iPhone 5S will come with a more durable finish, too.

Apple has reportedly moved beyond the "let's think about it stage" for an in-store iPhone trade-in program and is now running a pilot program in a few of its retail locations. Some stores have been part of the test program for a few weeks and are already processing multiple trade-ins daily.

The Mac Observer Spin:

Samsung Makes Grab for Your Wrist with Galaxy Gear

Hey, brother, can you spare $1,400? US, please. There's this desktop 3D scanner I need to buy. OK, I'll work on my begging pitch, but in the meanwhile, check out what has me drooling, the Digitizer Desktop 3D Scanner from MakerBot. That means you can use it to scan stuff—don't ask me what, because la la la I can't hear you!—and turn it into a 3D schematic that you can then send to a 3D printer! Cool, eh? For designers and engineers who make physical products, this could be a tipping point for inexpensive 3D scanning and printing. If you're rich, it could be something super awesome to impress your friends. [Via TechCrunch]

Star Trek: Into Darkness Available on iTunes 3 Weeks...

Star Trek: Into Darkness, the most recent movie from J.J. Abrams's reboot of the franchise, is available on iTunes now. That's three weeks before its release on DVD and Blu-ray, as noted by Useful Blog Posts. The HD version is priced at US$19.99 and the SD version is $14.99. This is the one where Kirk, Spock, and McCoy have to protect Earth from a mad, would-be tyrant. Oh, [spoiler, if you've been living under a rock] and there's a new Khan. Also, it is a great movie. The iTunes Extra content includes commentary from J.J. Abrams, a look at how they created the red planet in the movie, and interviews with Zachary Quinto and Benedict Cumberbatch. Cool, eh?

iTunes Festival Comes to Apple TV

Apple added a special iTunes Festival channel to Apple TV on Wednesday so everyone can watch the music event even if they can't make it to London. The 30-day festival includes 60 artists such as Elton John, Justin Timberlake, and Katy Perry performing concerts throughout September. Apple TV owners can check the iTunes Festival schedule, watch concerts live, replay concerts later, and more. The new channel is showing up without requiring a special update, so Apple TV owners should see it magically appear just as other channels have done in the past. Since the concerts are all happening in London, U.K. residents can enter to win tickets at the iTunes Festival website or through the Apple TV channel, and via the free iTunes Festival app for the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch.

Vevo for Apple TV Could Launch this Week

The online music video service Vevo could show up on Apple TV as early as this week, giving watchers a taste of what MTV used to be. Word of an Apple TV-specific Vevo app surfaced earlier this month, but now the Wall Street Journal is on board with its sources saying it's coming soon.

The Mac Observer Spin:
Bringing Vevo to Apple TV is a win for Vevo and Apple. Vevo gets music videos in front of more eyes, and Apple adds yet another channel to its set top entertainment box. For Apple TV owners, that means they get easy access to music videos, and have one less reason to pay for cable or satellite television.

Siri: Searching (and Adding to!) Notes

If you didn't know you could use Siri to search and add to the Notes app on your iOS device, you'll find this tip quite useful. After all, getting info from Siri is usually much quicker than finding an app, opening it, and searching for things. Why, you could practically shave seconds off your workday, people, and that's time that could be better spent on important stuff like Twitter and Kingdom Rush. Ah, productivity.
