News: iWatch not shipping until 2015?

Although it’s expected that Apple will debut its wearable device on September 9, Re/Code is now reporting that the iWatch may not ship until 2015. While sources claim the device won’t be released “for a few months,” John Paczkowski writes, “we’re unlikely to see it at retail until after the holiday season — think early 2015.” As the article points out, Apple’s first iPhone wasn’t actually released…

New Photos Show iPhone 6 in Grey, Gold, Silver

New photos of Apple's unannounced iPhone 6 have surfaced only days before the company is expected to unveil the new device at a special media event, and along with the space gray and gold models we're already familiar with, they also show a silver version. If the photos are accurate, we'll still have three color choices for the next iPhone model, just as we do for the iPhone 5s.

The Mac Observer Spin: It's hard to tell from photos if the bands through the metal back on the iPhone 6 will look weird in real life. September 9 can't come soon enough.

Bloomberg Backs Up Wearables Announcement at Apple’s...

First Re/code said Apple will unveil its wearables product line at its September 9 media event along side the iPhone 6, and now Bloomberg has sources backing up those claims, too. Apple is hosting a special media event on the 9th at the Flint Center in Cupertino, California, where it also introduced the original Macintosh computer.

The Mac Observer Spin: Even without Bloomberg's sources chiming in, it seemed like a pretty sure thing that a wearables announcement would be part of Apple's September 9 media event. Now it's just a matter of waiting to see what it is that Apple has been working on.

News: Report: Dutch chipmaker NXP to provide iPhone...

Apple is working with Dutch chipmaker NXP to enable NFC in the iPhone 6, according to the Financial Times. NXP will provide Apple with the NFC chips, enabling the company to use near field communication for its rumored upcoming mobile payment system. A Thursday report also claimed we would see NFC in the new iPhone to be used for mobile payments. As noted before, NFC has been rumored in iPhones for years — but the frequency of these reports, just…

Apple: HealthKit Data Off Limits to Advertisers

Apple's HealthKit will be off limits for advertisers, which means app developers planning on supporting the health and fitness logging platform won't be able to make money by selling information about how far we walk or how much we weigh to other companies. The rule should help keep personal information that should stay private out of the wrong hands, and could help boost trust in HealthKit once iOS 8 ships in the coming weeks.

The Mac Observer Spin: Locking down our health and fitness data so it can't be sold to advertisers is a great move on Apple's part. That'll go a long way towards helping iPhone owners feel like data that's very personal in nature won't be used to target them with inappropriate or embarrassing ads.

Cambridge Audio Bluetone 100 Bluetooth Speaker

Billed on the company's website as a "seriously grown up speaker," Cambridge Audio's Bluetone 100 ($300) gets its name from its 100-watt amplifier power and Bluetooth capabilities; it houses two 4" drivers that promise room-filling sound. Adjustable bass controls are offered on the speaker, which does need to be connected to an outlet. RCA and 3.5 mm inputs are also included. Coming only in glossy black, Bluetone 100 isn't cheap, but it looks to provide…

Twitter Opens Analytics Tools to All Users

If you're curious how many people read your Twitter posts, what type of people follow you, and what they're interested in, all of that information is now at your fingertips. This week Twitter opened its analytics tools to all of its users for free, and there's plenty of data to sift through.

The Mac Observer Spin: Seeing so much information about your Twitter followers is great, but it does open the possibility that people will try to craft all their tweets just to push up numbers instead of going for friendly engagement. Please don't be that guy.

Report Claims this is the Year of the NFC iPhone

Reports that Apple will include Near Field Communication, or NFC, in the next iPhone have routinely preceded device updates, and so far have proven to be wrong. Now there's word that this time Apple really, really, will include NFC in the iPhone 6, which is expected to be introduced on September 9.

The Mac Observer Spin: Just because we continue to hear that this is the year Apple will add NFC to the iPhone doesn't mean it will happen. People thought Apple would give in and add Blu-ray drives to the Mac lineup for years, and that didn't happen, either.

News: Report: iPhone 6 to feature NFC mobile payments

Apple’s upcoming iPhone 6 will come with its own mobile payment system, and the solution will use NFC, Wired reports. Use of near field communication has been rumored in the iPhone for years — speculation began around the time of the iPhone 4 in 2010, and every iPhone since has been accompanied by an NFC report that never came true. Talk about the use of NFC in the iPhone has heated up again in recent weeks, though considering the device’s…

Apple Denied Samsung Sales Injunction Yet Again

US Federal Judge Lucy Koh shot down a request from Apple to grant a permanent injunction blocking the sale of some Android-based Samsung mobile devices over pantent infringement claims. The motion was part of Apple's second patent infringement case with Samsung, and Judge Koh said the iPhone and iPad maker didn't show that its reputation or ability to innovate had been damaged.

The Mac Observer Spin: Apple's injunction request covered older Samsung products, so denying the injunction request won't have a big impact on device sales for either company. Still, winning the injunction would've been a handy tool to tuck away in Apple's legal strategy handbag.

Some hedge analysts might be saying that Apple is having to delay its foray into wearables (i.e. the "iWatch"), but Re/code's well-informed John Paczkowski said that Apple will unveil it "alongside" new iPhones at the September 9th media event he also broke.
