BlackBerry Messenger Hits Android and iOS This...

At long last, BlackBerry is making its popular messaging platform, BlackBerry Messenger, cross-platform.

This weekend, the company will release BBM clients for the two rival mobile operating systems to which it has been losing market share for years. On Saturday, BlackBerry will ship BBM for Google’s Android; on Sunday, it will release a second client for Apple’s iOS.

Initially, these BBM for Android and iOS will provide a core feature set. But, as CEO Thorsten Heins said earlier this year, the company intends to flesh it out further in the months that follow. “We’re committed to making the BBM experience on other platforms as fully featured as we can,” Heins said. “We’ll start with messaging and groups, but we’ll add voice later on. … BB10 is such a strong platform that we are confident it can become an...

iOS 7 How-to: Use the new multitasking interface

Multitasking came out for the iOS devices with iOS 4. Multitasking is a way to manage all of the apps running on your iOS device.

Previously, when you double tap the home button, you would get a small tray on the bottom of the screen filled with apps running. To close the apps, you would have to tap and hold on one of them until it wiggles and jiggles, and then once it is wiggling and jiggling you would tap on the red minus button in the upper left hand corner of the app.

Now, with iOS 7 that is no longer the case. When you double tap the home button, it takes you out of the app...

How to stop iOS 7 from destroying your iPhone's...

iOS 7 is all kinds of sexy, but with a slew of fancy new features comes more strain on the ever-important statistic of battery life. iOS 7 is compatible with iPhone 4 or later (though not all features are supported on older devices), so if you're upgrading your current device to the new operating system there's a good chance you could see a noticeable decrease in battery life.

If you're looking to avoid any pitfalls in the battery department, here are a few settings you can tweak to keep iOS 7 from sucking your iPhone's life like an evil, software vampire.

Disable background refresh

iOS 7 lets certain apps refresh even when you're not using them, which is both super convenient and a big problem for users who want the most out of their batteries. Disabling Background Refresh entirely would be your best bet, but even disabling the feature on just a few apps should help your device remain...

Marketcircle releases Billings Pro for iPad

At long last, Marketcircle has released Billings Pro for iPad. The time-tracking and invoicing app has made the leap from the desktop to Apple's tablet, and offers independent and small business owners the freedom to get things done while out in the field. Here's a look at the most recent version of Billings Pro for iPad.

Earlier this year, Marketcircle discontinued Billings and encouraged users to switch to Billings Pro. Why? One of the main reasons was sync. Many users need to generate invoices on the go, and have them waiting on all compatible devices. Since Billings required manual sync of two devices on the same Wi-Fi network, that had to change.

Billings Pro syncs data between Marketcircle's servers and the user's devices. This isn't client/server syncing that sends data on demand, but real-time sync that is handled seamlessly in the background. It'...

iOS 7 released: go forth and update!

It's finally here! Apple has released iOS 7 to the public.

The new firmware is now available as a direct download from Apple's Phobos servers, through iTunes, and presumably as an over-the-air update for Wi-Fi connections. (The firmware occupies something north of 1.25 GB, so caveat updateus, aka updater beware.)

The new update requires iTunes 11.1, which was released earlier today. If you use your iPhone primarily with a computer, you'll want to grab a copy.

iOS 7 introduces many fabulous new features, which we've been covering today at TUAW. Ready to dive into the amazing new Jony Ive-led redesign? I've made sure to enable comments on this post. Share your experiences in download, installing, and using this new update!

New lease on life or death sentence? iOS 7 on the...

Is installing iOS 7 something you'll want to do to your iPhone 4? Andrew Cunningham

When a new iOS version is released, the spotlight always shines the brightest on the shiny, brand-new hardware that ships with it. That's to be expected—people who are getting ready to drop hundreds of dollars on a phone are hungry to know how the software pairs with the best that Apple currently has to offer. That said, one of the benefits of sticking with Apple's ecosystem is that your old phone will run the latest software for a few years after you buy it. Often you can grab that new software just as soon (or even sooner!) than the people who will be getting it on a new device.

Last year, we took a look at how the iPhone 3GS ran iOS 6, since 2009's flagship iPhone was the oldest, slowest hardware that supported the new update. We were pleasantly surprised—the 3GS ran most of iOS 6's biggest features, and it usually ran them just as quickly as it ran iOS 5. This year, we're...

Pandora updates iOS app, tweaks branding a bit

With the general release of iOS 7 today, many iPhone and iPad users are going to get their first taste of iTunes Radio, Apple's new streaming-radio service. Not to be outdone, Pandora today released a flurry of updates meant to give the current leading streaming service a fresh look and new features.

The Pandora app (universal, free with in-app purchases available) has been updated to version 5.0, bringing with it a new look that is -- unsurprisingly -- in touch with iOS 7's design sensibilities. There's even a new logo on the app. Running the app on the iPad provides much more information now, bringing the version to parity with the iPhone app released almost a year ago. Artist pages, lyrics and additional information are now available on the iPad.

iOS 7: phone call changes

Your iPhone does so much cool stuff, especially now that it's running iOS 7, that it's easy to overlook the device's primary function: it's a phone! Apple's latest mobile operating system brings significant cosmetic and functional changes to the Phone app. Here's what you can expect when placing and receiving phone calls with iOS 7 on your iPhone.

Looks

Permit me an understatement: this app looks way different on iOS 7. It feels lighter and "roomier," if that makes sense. The large "Call Back" and "Delete" buttons are gone from Voicemail, for instance. So is all of the black, replaced with lots and lots of white. Let's begin by looking at the icons in the lower tool bar.

Favorites

The Favorites icon has been re-designed, though not as dramatically as the others. Right away you'll notice that iOS 7 puts each contact's photo next to his or her name in the Favorites list, which is nice. The blue arrow...

iOS 7 Is Here

The latest iteration Apple’s mobile operating system, iOS 7, debuted on Wednesday morning as promised, bringing with it what CEO Tim Cook has described as “the biggest change to iOS since the iPhone.”

A complete reimagining of the operating system on which the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch run, iOS 7 is Apple’s first truly post-Steve Jobs product — one imagined and architected without his guidance and persistent refinement. It’s a reconceptualization of the OS that aspires to unify Apple’s vision of hardware and software into a holistic experience, and it’s the result of the new era of collaboration at the company that began last year with the ouster of former iOS chief Scott Forstall and the elevation of Jony Ive to SVP of design.

IOS 7 is a watershed moment for Apple, as Cook explained at D11 earlier this year.

“We (asked Jony to work on iOS) to really amp up collaboration,”...

Another new photo-sharing app? In 2013? Really?

Yup, really. But say this for the team behind Memoir, which is launching today: While sharing photos is a component of what their app does, it’s not solely a photo-sharing app. It’s more of a photo-storage and filing service, with ambitions to move someday beyond photos into other personal data.

Apple's AirPort Utility, iBooks updated with...

Sure, it's not the most exciting news to drop on this iOS 7 official "birth" day, but Apple has updated several apps to bring them into the brave new world of the new iOS. Both AirPort Utility and iBooks have received updates in the last few hours.

The notes for iBooks -- which seems to be sporting the same non-flat icon that it has since it first became an iOS app -- show that "This version of iBooks improves compatibility with iOS and iCloud." The app is still as Scott Forstall skeuomorphic as it always has been, complete with the faux wood library shelves.

For the AirPort Utility, the release notes simply say "Adds support for iOS 7." I'd let you know what that means if I had half a clue, but there's just not a whole hell of a lot of detail there.

Just in case the imminent arrival of iOS 7 isn’t enough to get you pumped, Apple’s also gone ahead and released iTunes 11.1. iOS 7: Siri starts to shine

It's no secret that I'm a big fan of Siri, Apple's intelligent assistant. While Siri hasn't yet become as smart or as useful as 2001: A Space Odyssey's HAL 9000 (which might be a good thing), Apple has quietly added some new features to Siri in iOS 7 that turn it from a useful but sometimes frustrating beta app to a really helpful assistant.

Siri's new interface fits into iOS 7 better than the previous incarnation did in iOS 6. It literally fades into view on top of whatever you're looking at when you invoke Siri. You'll find that Siri answers your questions faster and usually more accurately.

Apple also has Siri check more sources than ever before, such as Bing, Wikipedia, and Twitter. That means that not only do you get more answers, but it's easy to get a second opinion on an answer. And most of those answers no longer show up in a third-party application - instead, they're displayed in Siri's new and beautiful user interface...

iBooks for iOS Updated, Stays Skeuomorphic

Apple released iBooks 3.1.3 for the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch late on Tuesday in preparation for the launch if iOS 7. While the update does improve iOS compatibility, it didn't drop its skeuomorphic look and is sticking with its wooden bookshelf interface.

The Mac Observer Spin:
Apple treats skeuomorphism like a rash, so it's surprising to see that it's still part of iBooks. That probably means there's a really big update coming soon and that the current version of iBooks is getting little more than critical compatibility updates to keep in working until the complete redesign is ready to go.

Structure Sensor Turns Your iPad into a 3D Scanner

We live in SciFi times. I mean, really, George Jetson would be impressed. Tuesday's example of this is he Structure Sensor from Occipital, a Kickstarter project that turns your iPad into a portable 3D scanner. The device attaches to your iPad and you can use it to 3D map indoor spaces or capture 3D models of objects and people. The company is developing an API for developers to tap into the device, too. This is definitely cool, and lots of people appear to agree. Occipital had an initial funding goal of US$100,000, and in less than the first day, it's blown past that target to hit $200,000.  The early pledge offers were snapped up, but there are still some $349 pledges left that gets you a Structure Sensor for your iPad. Check out the movie for more.

That Time We Waited in Line During a Typhoon for a...

So you've waited in line for an Apple product launch? Oh yeah? Well, have you waited in line during a hurricane or typhoon? A group of people waiting in line for Apple's iPhone 5c and 5s launch on Friday, August 20th, at Apple's Tokyo Ginza store can answer that with an affirmative, and they have a video to prove it. Fortunately, Apple took pity on them and invited them inside just before it hit.  Go ahead, Samsung and Microsoft, try and make fun of that, because that's all either company can do, make fun of it. No one is going to wait in line during a typhoon for a product launch for either of those companies. This could be a big iPhone launch for Apple in Japan because the company signed up DoCoMo—Japan's largest carrier—for the first time. Kotaku has more information (via AppleInsider).

Auris Skye on Kickstarter, an AirPlay Receiver for...

There was lots of grumbling when Apple obsoleted legacy speaker docks by moving iPhone and iPad to the Lightning connector, but a company called Auris saw some opportunity in that grumbling. It has a Kickstarter project called Skye that is essentially an AirPlay receiver for your legacy 30-pin Dock speakers. Slip it on your Dock the way you used to slip on your iPhone, and you then send music from your iPhone, iPad, Mac, or PC (through iTunes) wirelessly. Android and Windows Phone are also supported through DLNA. It's Wi-Fi (rather than Bluetooth), so range won't be an issue in most settings. Auris is trying to raise US$56,000, and has already raised $21,800 in just the first day. Early backers can get a Skye with $64, $69, $74, or $79 (it will retail for $89). It's a pretty cool idea, so check it out.

Google Buys iPhone Contact Sharing App Bump

Bump quickly gained popularity on the iPhone shortly after Apple opened the App Store, and now it's going to be part of the Google family. According to the company, Google is buying it out but business will continue as usual.

The Mac Observer Spin:
Considering how the SnapSeed purchase went, there's a chance that Bump will stick around. Google kept the mobile versions of SnapSeed around and has continued to support it. So the big question is whether or not Bump is Google's backup plan if NFC data sharing fizzles out on Android.

Touch ID, the built-in fingerprint technology in Apple's new iPhone 5s, is causing production problems and will limit availability on its September 20 launch day, according to analysts. Both Brian White from Cantor, and Peter Misek from Jefferies both say they're hearing the sensor yield is below expectations, limiting just how many iPhone 5s units Apple can build.

The Mac Observer Spin:
Apple hasn't said if iPhone 5s numbers are limited, but without a preorder option it seems fairly likely. The new fingerprint sensor looks like a reasonable culprit for the problem, too.
