Blocking Galaxy S4 from Patent Trial Means More...
Magistrate Judge Paul Grewal has denied Apple's request to at the Galaxy S4 smartphone to its patent infringement case against Samsung. The Judge denied the motion saying it would put too much of a strain on court resources, which means we'll likely see yet another infringement case -- this time focused on the Galaxy S4 -- at some point in the future.
The Mac Observer Spin:
Think the patent infringement cases between Apple and Samsung will wrap up any time soon? Think again. Samsung will continue to crank out Android-based smartphones and tablets faster than the courts can react, and Apple will keep filing its infringement lawsuits.

Launch Shuttlecraft: Star Trek’s Galileo Restored
The Galileo shuttlecraft from the original Star Trek series survived the harsh vacuum of space and alien attacks, at least on a soundstage, but didn't fare so well for the next 45 years stashed on back lots and outside in storage yards. Luckily, a group of dedicated fans took on the project of restoring the crumbling set piece with the help of actual ship builders. The video starts with some clips from Star Trek, and the restoration itself starts at about 5:30. The fully restored Galileo looks fantastic, and is going to be available for anyone to see because the group donated the shuttlecraft to NASA's Visitor Center at the Houston Space Center.

Just like earlier versions of OS X, Lion and Mountain Lion lets users see all of their Mac's open windows with the press of a button. Mission Control groups all of those windows by application, but some long-time Mac users prefer the old show-ever-open-window-in-a-grid style view instead. Michael Johnston shows you how to choose which view Mission Control uses, and it's easy to do.

What Happens When You Tell Siri You Don’t Like Hew...
So what would happen if you were to tell Siri you don't care for her new voice in iOS 7? Reddit member Codyd51 did just that, and posted the results, results that show Apple's engineers have a great sense of humor. As you can see in the image below, her response was, "Oh yeah? Why don't you try multi-dactylic tansubstantiation of natural speech and synthesizing meta-diphones according to the phonotactics of the language using Karczyk-Nephelson's algorithm!? Sorry about that. I was upset." That's just too funny. Reddit member malchyk also told her that he liked her new voice, which earned an equally awesome response. Give us iOS 7 now!

Microsoft Shows Commitment to Failing Mobile...
Microsoft started its Build developer conference on Wednesday, and kicked the event off with the release of Windows 8.1 Preview, a sneak-peek version of the next version of Windows 8. As far as we can tell, Windows 8.1 represents a commitment to the failed mobile paradigms introduced with Windows 8, an OS that chiefly saddles tablets with Microsoft's desktop legacy of yore. A blog post from Brandon LeBlanc, a Communications Manager at Microsoft, talks about the release, including the really huge news that it includes the return of the Start button to Windows. Hoorah! Happy days are here again! Oh, and for some entertainment, note that the comments on the blog post are filled with people complaining about problems installing the preview or asking for help. The video below offers a semi-tour of the new release.

The City of Cupertino will be streaming a public comment hearing on Wednesday, June 26th on Apple Campus 2, the Apple's so-called Spaceship HQ. This project represents a major endeavor for both Apple and Cupertino. The building will be large enough to house more than 13,000 employees, and it occupies hundreds of acres that used to house an HP facility. As such, it is subject to scrutiny and approval from Cupertino all along the way. The city council has posted a form that residents can use to submit their comments on the environmental impact—all of which have been published. The process also includes a hearing for public input, which is what will be streamed on Wednesday. It is not known who Apple will have on hand to represent its interests. [Via 9to5Mac]

The Mac Observer Spin:

Apple's patent win in against Mirror Worlds in the U.S. this week was followed by a loss against Samsung in Japan. The country's Intellectual High Property Court chose to uphold a lower court's ruling that Samsung didn't infringe on Apple's media sync patents.
The Mac Observer Spin:
Try as it might, Apple can't win every patent case it has with Samsung. Losing its media sync fight has to hurt, but the interface patent wins Apple has racked up are probably worth more in the long run.

Supreme Court Hands Apple Final Win in Mirror Worlds...
The U.S. Supreme Court has refused to hear Mirror Worlds' appeal in its patent infringement case against Apple, bringing an end to the fight and handing the final victory to the iPhone and iPad maker. The legal fight between the two companies started in 2008 when Mirror Worlds took Apple to court for allegedly infringing on its patents with the Spotlight, Time Machine and Cover Flow features in OS X.
The Mac Observer Spin:
Mirror Worlds kept Apple in court for more than four years, wasting not only Apple's money, but tax payers, as well. Since none of the courts invalidated its patents, Mirror Worlds is free to head back to the patent holder-friendly U.S. District Court in Eastern Texas for more infringement cases if it wants. Did we mention that President Obama has had his fill of patent trolls?

The folks at 9to5Mac reported that Siri will become a lot more proactive in learning how to pronounce names in iOS 7. Users will also be able to tell Siri "That's not how you pronounce [any name]" in order to start the same name-learning process. There's no word yet on whether there will be other ways to say it. This wasn't a feature announced by Apple—the company barely scratched the surface when showing off the new mobile OS—but it will be a welcome one that greatly enhances the Siri experience for all users as the data gets added to Siri's knowledge base. There are a couple of screnshots in the 9to5Mac story.

Growing Mobile Market Means Apple is Still a Winner
Mobile Device and computer shipments are set to grow this year by nearly 6 percent, and while Google's Android may account for a big part of that, Apple's iOS and OS X operating systems will take a substantial bite out of the market, too. Based on data from Gartner, smartphone shipments will climb 4.3 percent this year, while tablet growth will hit 67.9 percent, and Apple's OS X and iOS combo approach is working to give the company a growing piece of the overall computer market.
The Mac Observer Spin:
Apple has managed to carve out a piece of the market where it managed to be among the most valuable companies in the world based on a combination of profit margins and sheer number of devices sold despite the fact that more Android devices and Windows PCs are sold every month. That's a pretty good market strategy that Apple's competitors just haven't been able to copy.

First Trailer for Ashton Kutcher’s ‘Jobs’ Biopic...
Now that Ashton Kutcher's Steve Jobs biopic has been renamed Jobs (from jOBS, a title I liked) and rescheduled for an August 16th, 2013 release, it's time for the trailers. The first one has been posted on YouTube, and it's a slickly-edited ad that focuses on the drama, some sex (somehow I suspect that's being overplayed), and the tension in Steve Jobs's corporate struggles at Apple. It also plays on some fan heart strings with phrases like "The Original Innovator," and "It only takes one person...to start a revolution." There are smashing phones, votes to kick him out of Apple, some screaming, and at the end, Ashton Kutcher reads the voice-over narration of "The Crazy Ones" commercial. In short, it's pretty cool. My favorite shot was Steve Jobs's eyeball reflecting the prototype for what became the Apple I TV display.

FAA Easing Restrictions on Inflight iPhone, iPad Use
The skies may soon be a friendlier place for your iPhone and iPad if the Federal Aviation Administration follows through on a recommendation to lift a ban on using electronic devices in airplanes during takeoff and landing. The recommendation is under consideration by the agency following a report from a 28-person advisory panel that said forcing passengers to shut off devices such as smartphones, tablets and ebook readers below 10,000 feet altitude has little impact on flight safety.
The Mac Observer Spin:
Stopping passengers from listening to music, reading ebooks and playing video games during takeoff and landing is a throwback to a time when far less was known about the potential in-flight interference from portable electronics, plus many airlines already offer inflight Internet via WiFi. It's about time the FAA made a change.

Bluebonnet Telecommunications Sues Apple over Call...
Apple was hit with a new patent infringement lawsuit this week, this time from Bluebonnet Telecommunications over the call forwarding feature in the iPhone 4S and iPhone 5. According to the lawsuit, Apple is inducing customers to use features it knows infringe on the patent in question.
The Mac Observer Spin:
A quick check showed that Bluebonnet Telecommunications is packing the court docket with patent infringement lawsuits against Apple, Motorola, Google, Sony, and more. Those lawsuits all happen to be in the patent troll-friendly District court in Eastern Texas. Looks like we have some pretty easy lines to connect.

DOJ v Apple: Or How to Lose Against Apple in Court
The U.S. Department of Justice went into its trial with confidence it could prove Apple was part of a conspiracy to artificially raise book prices, and even had Judge Denise Cote believing its case was strong. After three weeks, however, the DOJ's arguments seem to be in shambles, Judge Cote said the issues have shifted, and it seems pretty clear why Apple was willing to go to the mat defending its claims that there never was any collusion with book publishers.

B&N Drops Bombshell in DOJ’s Price Fixing Case...
Online and brick-and-mortar book retailer Barnes & Noble shot a massive hole through the Department of Justice's ebook price fixing case against Apple on Tuesday. When Theresa Horner, B&N's Vice President of Digital Content, took the stand she told the court her company was already negotiating agency pricing deals with publishers before Apple was on the scene in hopes of killing the profit losses it was suffering at the hands of Amazon.com. That doesn't sound like testimony that helps the DOJ case at all.

Eight years ago, Dave Teare and his business partner were developing websites with Ruby on Rails. They were working with forms and had to constantly enter user names and passwords. Eight years later, 1Password is going strong on OS X and iOS. And Windows. And Android.

Solar iPhone Chargers Coming to NYC
If you're in the city that never sleeps, there's a good chance your iPhone doesn't, either. To that end, AT&T, Goal Zero and Pensa have teamed up to bring solar powered smartphone chargers to the streets of New York City. The outdoor charging stations include built-in Dock and Lightning connectors as well as USB ports for people that prefer to use their own cables, small shelves to hold your phone while charging, and can be placed anywhere there's direct sunlight. The chargers are part of a test program in several locations such as Fort Greene Park, Union Square, Central Park. They'll be moving around and could end up in other cities at some point, too. Assuming the test program is successful, this'll be a handy way to power up on the go or when regular electrical service is down. If you get the chance to try one out let us know!

Steve Wozniak Presides Over 3 Working Apple I...
It was a gathering tech legends, both the computers and the people. History San Jose put together a gathering of Apple I computers that included five of the 50 or so models still considered working. Apple cofounder Steve Wozniak and Apple employee #12 Daniel Kottke were on hand (one of the Apple Is belonged to The Woz), and by the end of the event three of the devices had been booted up and were running side by side. That's pretty darned cool, and it's not likely something that will be repeated any time soon. There is so much value attached to working models (the last one sold went for $674,100), no one wants to be the person who fried one or proved theirs no longer works. The San Jose Mercury News has photographs and more information.

The story of how that turned out includes fascinating technical tidbits about how Wi-Fi works.

The folks at Flexibits have decided that the world would be a much better place if searching in Apple's Messages and iChat didn't suck. Their solution is a Mac app called Chatology that not only makes it easier to find old chats, it gives you filtering options (by image and links) to make it much easier to find the specific information you're looking for. There's also a preference option that makes ⌘F in Messages or iChat open up Chatology instead of the built-in search. The app is priced at US$19.99 from the Flexibits website—there's a free trial version available—and it requires Mac OS X 10.7.5 or later.
