Drone video shows solid progress on Apple Campus 2

Drone footage by Matthew Roberts

Drone pilot and videographer Matthew Roberts has published his monthly update video of the construction of Apple Campus 2, and things are really coming along. The majority of curved glass is now installed on the "spaceship" building and the roof is nearly complete, so installation of the thousands of photovoltaic solar panels that will be used to help power the facility has begun.

Earthmoving for landscaping purposes continues, and the parking structure appears to be almost complete. The magnificent employee fitness center is really coming along as well, and Roberts notes that it has an estimated cost of $70 million. Way to take care of your employees, Apple!

I recommend watching the video in 4K if you have the capability, as it's quite impressive.

Android Users More Honest and Humble Than iPhone...

The kind of software your phone is running can tell a lot about you, apparently. According to a new study by a team of researchers at the University of Lincoln, Android smartphone users have great levels of honesty and humility, agreeableness and openness personality traits but are seen as less extroverted than Apple's iPhone users. According to a report by IANS, via BGR: The researchers believe that this could be because iPhone users thought it was more important to have a high-status phone than Android users. The team from the University of Lincoln also found that women were twice more likely to own an iPhone than an Android device. However, most of the personality stereotypes did not occur in reality as only honesty and humility was found in greater amounts within Android users, the findings showed.

Ireland’s cabinet joins Apple in EU back tax brouhaha

Ireland's cabinet has agreed to join Apple in appealing against a €13 billion (about $14.5 million) back tax demand that the European Commission has levied against the Cupertino, California-based company “despite misgivings among independents who back the fragile coalition,” reports Reuters.

The Commission's ruling this week has angered Washington, which accuses the EU of trying to grab tax revenue that should go to the U.S. government. The White House said President Barack Obama would raise the issue of tax avoidance by some multinational corporations at a summit of the G20 leading economies in China this weekend, adds Reuters.

Comment: Sony Bravia experience is another reason...

One of the longest-running rumors about Apple – that it was working on launching a fully fledged television – finally fizzled out last year, when a WSJ report said that the company had ultimately decided against the idea. Instead, Apple is aiming at a (delayed) subscription TV service, complete with original programming.

It was speculated at the time that there were two reasons for the decision. First, that Apple had been unable to come up with a compelling differentiator that would have given consumers a reason to buy an Apple television over the many rival products. Second, that there simply wasn’t enough money in the business...

OS X gets security updates to combat ‘Pegasus’

Apple has issued security updates for OS X Yosemite, OS X El Capitan and Safari to address a vulnerability called “Pegasus” that potentially allows nefarious agents to take over a target device with a single click. You can download the updates via the Mac App Store — and you certainly should.

As noted by AppleInsider, Pegasus leverages three zero-day vulnerabilities to remotely jailbreak and install a suite of monitoring software onto a victim's device. One of the key tools in the process is an exploit that takes advantage of a memory corruption flaw in Safari WebKit. The vulnerability allows attackers to deliver the malware payload when a target clicks on a link leading to a malicious webpage.

Apple releases Security Update 2016-001 for OS X...

Because security updates are a good thing.

On Thursday, Apple released Security Update 2016-001 for users of OS X 10.10 Yosemite and OS X 10.11 El Capitan. The fix covers assorted zero-day exploits that could allow full access to a device and updates Safari to version 9.3.5 to patch security holes in the browser as well.

The exploits require the user to open a URL from an SMS message, which then executes remote binary files in the OS that dig into the kernel and allow unauthorized software to be installed—in iOS this effectively jailbreaks your device behind your back.

Apple’s release notes state that the Mac security updates released today will prevent applications from disclosing kernel memory and executing arbitrary code with kernel privileges....

Tim Cook pens scathing letter addressing Apple...

There apparently came a moment where, in the wake of the controversy regarding Apple’s tax rate in Ireland, Tim Cook got angry and began smashing things.

Responding to the Commission’s decision that Ireland should recover 13 billion euros ($14.5 billion) in back taxes from Apple, Tim Cook said that “in Ireland and in every country where we operate, follows the law and we pay all the taxes we owe.”

He proceeded to pen the following letter:

A Message to the Apple Community in Europe

Thirty-six years ago, long before introducing iPhone, iPod or even the Mac, Steve Jobs established Apple’s first operations in Europe. At the time, the company knew that in order to serve customers in Europe, it would need a base there. So, in October 1980, Apple opened...

FairWare Hackers May Take Ransoms, Keep Stolen Files

The latest ransomware intrusion that targets Linux servers, dubbed "FairWare," may be a classic server hack designed to bilk money from victims with no intent to return stolen files after payment in bitcoins is made. The attack reportedly targets a Linux server, deletes the Web folder, and then demands a ransom payment of two bitcoins for return of the stolen files. The attackers apparently do not encrypt the files but may upload them to a server under their control. Victims first learned about FairWare when they discovered their websites were down.

How to use Siri to send text messages

You don’t have to use the virtual keypad on your iPhone or iPad to send text messages. Siri can do it for you. Here’s how:

  • First, of course, decide what message you wish to send. Say something like, “Send Doug an email” or “Text my sister.” Siri will create a new message and ask you what you want the message to say.
  • Dictate your message.
  • To make sure it’s the proper message, tell Siri to “Read my message,” and she’ll read it back to you.
  • You’re then asked if you wish to send the message. Say, “Send,” and it’s sent.

LampChamp: it’s a light bulb, it’s a USB charging...

Many of us have multiple gadgets and devices, so it’s sometimes hard to keep ‘em all powered up. The LampChamp from Nemo Ventures helps alleviate the problem as you can use it to turn a lamp into a USB charging station for, say, an iPhone, iPad or iPod touch.

It’s easy to use. You install it by simply removing an existing light bulb, screwing in the LampChamp, and replacing the bulb. Now you can use to power your smartphone, tablets, eReaders — heck, pretty much anything with a USB port.

The 2 AMP USB Charger stays on all the time, while an on/off switch controls let you power up or power down the light bulb.

Sure, the LampChamp is a one-trick pony, but when you’re lounging around the house and having problem finding a convenient outlet to charge your iDevice, it’s a pretty nifty trick.

Hands On: Toca Hair Salon 2 (iOS)

Makeover apps tend to be somewhat serious, and are generally geared toward adults. Instead of being a fun game, they tend to be more akin to photo-editing software, which is generally pretty complex and low on the amusement scale. Toca Boca, however, has stepped forth with Toca Hair Salon 2, a makeover game that offers a lot to younger gamers or future beauticians....

The Los Angeles Unified School District's failed iPad deployment was botched early on, according to a review by the US Education Department. Hands On: PhotoWatermark (OS X)

It's a different world. You might be the sort who would never take photo from a website and use it in your own book, but today if an image is online, it's as if the world sees it as fair game. Maybe that's a peek into our base immorality and the ultimate cataclysmic self-destruction of humanity, or maybe it's just that cut and paste is easy. Whatever it is, though, it's happening and you cannot stop it – not even with an application like this: but if PhotoWatermark can't prevent the copying of images, it can help photographers and artists considerably by adding identifying text to your image...

Multiple reports point to record-breaking Apple...

While the idea that Apple probably had another record-breaking holiday quarter (what the company calls fiscal 2015 Q1) is unsurprising to all but selected pundits, a spate of reports released on Monday may be painting a general portrait of not just significant improvement, but more importantly growth in key areas of importance both to investors and analysis as well as to the health of the company. Sales of Macs look to be way up, iOS devices are selling much better in a key foreign market, and Apple's suppliers are flourishing -- all signs that point to better-than-expected quarter....

HomeKit requires Apple TV hub for remote Siri...

People wanting to control HomeKit-enabled devices remotely through Apple's Siri must have an Apple TV at home to serve as a hub, according to Verge sources, including two launch partners and a person said to be "close to HomeKit's development." Siri controls will always work while an iPhone or iPad is on the same network as a HomeKit device, but until now it wasn't fully clear how remote operation might work. The Apple TV must also be a third-generation model running at least v7.0 firmware or newer. Notably, remote operation without Siri -- using the vendor app for a HomeKit product directly -...
