If you’ve been waiting for an dual-band 802.11ac router to drop below $100, you’re in luck. Amazon is selling the Netgear AC1750 R6300v2 smart router today for $70. That’s about $22 off Amazon’s list price and well below other online retailers, and a return to the lowest price we’ve seen.

The R6300v2 has a few features in common with Netgear’s R6400, which we reviewed in August 2015—though the two routers look nothing like each other. Like the R6400, the discounted R6300 features a maximum throughput of 1300 Megabits per second on...

Report: iPads, Macs both losing ground in the U.S....

Apple’s iPads and Macs — which accounted for about half of the mobile devices shipped to schools in the United States in 2013 — are steadily losing ground to inexpensive Chromebook laptops, according to a new report from Futuresource Consulting.

In fact, devices running iOS and macOS have hit a new low, falling to third place behind both Google-powered laptops and Windows devices in the education market, notes the research group. However, sales of mobile computers in the U.S. K-12 sector continued to develop in 2016, with annual shipments growing 18% year-on-year in 2016, reaching 12.6 million units, up from 10.7 million in 2015. Futuresource Consulting says the outlook for 2017 is also positive with market shipment growth forecast to remain in double figures.

At an operating system level, Chromebooks continue to gain market share, reaching 58% in 2016, up from 50% in 2015. According to Futuresource...

It looked like Smartflash LLC had Apple right where it wanted it after a jury awarded the patent-holding company $533 million—one of the largest patent verdicts in history.

The dreams of patent riches have gone up in smoke after a panel of appeals judges ruled that all three of Smartflash's patents are invalid as overly abstract. At this point in history, a one-employee patent-holding company with no novel legal argument has an...

9to5Mac writers talking tech kit: Ben Lovejoy

Time moves quickly in the tech world. Back in 2013, I thought it would be fun to share the Apple kit I use, and to invite you to do the same in the comments. Three-and-a-half years later, some of that kit looks almost comically dated – like the iPad 2.

So it’s time for an update, and this time I’m taking a slightly broader approach and talking about both Apple and non-Apple tech. So, as before, let’s begin with the things on my desk …

Chrome for MacOS will block rogue ad injections and...

Google has expanded its Safe Browsing service, allowing Google Chrome on macOS to better protect users from programs that locally inject ads into webpages or that change the browser’s homepage and search settings.

The Safe Browsing service is used by Google’s search engine, as well as Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox, to block users from accessing websites that host malicious code or malicious software. The service is also used in Chrome to scan downloaded files and block users from executing those that are flagged as malicious.

“Safe Browsing is broadening its protection of macOS devices, enabling safer browsing experiences by improving defenses against unwanted software and malware targeting macOS,” Google said in a blog post Wednesday. “As a result, macOS users may start seeing more warnings when they navigate to dangerous sites or download dangerous files.”

Patent report: retractable displays, language...

Future iPhones and iPads — and perhaps even Macs — could have displays that fold like paper. Apple has filed for a patent (number 20170060183) for “electronic devices with retractable displays.”

In the patent filing, the company says the use of rigid display substrates can cause displays and electronic devices to be more bulky than desired. Although devices can be reduced in size by using smaller displays, this may result in viewing areas that aren’t as large as desired. Apple thinks flexible, retractable displays could be the answer.

In other patent news, future iPhones and Apple Watches could translate languages on-the-fly. Apple has been granted a patent (number 20170060853) for a “mobile device having human language translation capability with positional feedback.”

In the patent filing, Apple notes that a basic need for most people when traveling in a foreign country is human language translation. For example, you may want...

Rumor: Apple may release 128-gigabyte iPhone SE...

The iPhone SE could be upgraded to a 128-gigabyte model.

An internal memo circulating through U.S. retailer Target has indicated that some Target stores are being told to return certain iPhone SE units to Apple.

The memo requests that stores return six unlocked 16- and 64-gigabyte models —in all four colors —as well as two Sprint configurations. An anonymous worker meanwhile stated that her shop hasn’t received any iPhone SE shipments since before the iPhone 7 was announced in September.

One possibility is that Apple is reclaiming unsold inventory to repurpose it, rather than sell it at a discount. Sales have likely fallen off, as Apple is still charging at least $399 for the device despite it offering specifications like a 2015 A9 processor and a default 16 gigabytes of storage. The iPhone 7 and 7 Plus come with at least 32 gigabytes, and use faster A10 chips— but also cost at least $250 more.

A current rumor has stated that Apple is preparing a 128-...

Yahoo discloses third data breach in six months

The hits just keep on coming.

Yahoo today revealed a third major hack, wherein some 32 million accounts have been accessed by intruders over the past two years. These accounts are in addition to the accounts affected by the two data breaches the company had previously disclosed.

The accounts were apparently compromised via forged cookie files. Yahoo has stated that the accounts were accessed by the “same state-sponsored actor beloved to be responsible for the 2014 hack.” The 2014 hack was the one that affected at least 500 million accounts.

“Based on the investigation, we believe an unauthorized third party accessed the company’s proprietary code to learn how to forge certain cookies,” Yahoo said in its latest annual filing.

To remedy the issue, Yahoo says that it has invalidated those cookies so that they cannot be used to access user accounts any longer.

Finally, Yahoo also announced today that it would not be awarding CEO Marissa Mayer a cash...

Sorry, Apple, the Headphone Jack Isn't Going...

An anonymous reader quotes a report from Rob Pegoraro via Yahoo Finance: Two things unite almost every phone on display here at Mobile World Congress 2017: Android and a headphone jack. Apple doesn't exhibit its wares at this trade show, so the domination of Google's operating system is predictable. But the headphone jack's persistence did not look so inevitable when Apple cut it from the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus last September. Lenovo's Motorola subsidiary had already shipped a phone without a headphone hack, the Moto Z, and Apple's influence over the rest of the smartphone industry remains formidable -- indeed, within months, the Chinese firm LeEco had debuted a lineup of Android phones devoid of headphone jacks. As my colleague David Pogue predicted in a post approving Apple's move: "Other brands worldwide will be following suit." The hardware on display here at the world's largest mobile tech conference, though, suggests otherwise. Two days of walking around the show floor...

Horcrux Email Backup works automatically and...

By Aaron Lee

Questions about data sovereignty, data security and cloud computing may seem most appropriate for corporations and governments, but the issues are important for every person who has an email account. Technichor's Horcrux Email Backup is a Mac app that lets email users automatically keep their data rather than surrendering it to third party services. And it’s useful because it runs in the background, so you don’t have to give it a lot of thought.

Most people who use email use one of the major third-party providers like Appl Mail or Gmail. The data which is stored with these providers actually belongs to the provider, not to the user. As a result, some folks have been surprised to discover that they can lose access to their data without any recourse.

Horcrux is a background app that takes daily snapshots of email account state similar to Apple's Time Machine. The app allows users to browse the emails and undelete specific emails....

BrianFagioli quotes a report from BetaNews: As more and more consumers buy Mac computers, evildoers will have increased incentive to write malware for macOS. Luckily, users of Apple's operating system that choose to use Google Chrome for web surfing will soon be safer. You see, the search giant is improving its Safe Browsing initiative to better warn macOS users of malicious websites and attempts to alter browser settings. "As part of this next step towards reducing macOS-specific malware and unwanted software, Safe Browsing is focusing on two common abuses of browsing experiences: unwanted ad injection, and manipulation of Chrome user settings, specifically the start page, home page, and default search engine. Users deserve full control of their browsing experience and Unwanted Software Policy violations hurt that experience," says Google. LA schools' iPad program flawed from beginning...

The Los Angeles Unified School District's failed iPad deployment was botched early on, according to a review by the US Education Department. The federal agency says that it first of all put too hard an emphasis on using Apple hardware and software, ignoring cheaper options that could have saved money for the District and taxpayers. Hands On: PhotoWatermark (OS X)

It's a different world. You might be the sort who would never take photo from a website and use it in your own book, but today if an image is online, it's as if the world sees it as fair game. Maybe that's a peek into our base immorality and the ultimate cataclysmic self-destruction of humanity, or maybe it's just that cut and paste is easy. Whatever it is, though, it's happening and you cannot stop it – not even with an application like this: but if PhotoWatermark can't prevent the copying of images, it can help photographers and artists considerably by adding identifying text to your image...

Multiple reports point to record-breaking Apple...

While the idea that Apple probably had another record-breaking holiday quarter (what the company calls fiscal 2015 Q1) is unsurprising to all but selected pundits, a spate of reports released on Monday may be painting a general portrait of not just significant improvement, but more importantly growth in key areas of importance both to investors and analysis as well as to the health of the company. Sales of Macs look to be way up, iOS devices are selling much better in a key foreign market, and Apple's suppliers are flourishing -- all signs that point to better-than-expected quarter....

HomeKit requires Apple TV hub for remote Siri...

People wanting to control HomeKit-enabled devices remotely through Apple's Siri must have an Apple TV at home to serve as a hub, according to Verge sources, including two launch partners and a person said to be "close to HomeKit's development." Siri controls will always work while an iPhone or iPad is on the same network as a HomeKit device, but until now it wasn't fully clear how remote operation might work. The Apple TV must also be a third-generation model running at least v7.0 firmware or newer. Notably, remote operation without Siri -- using the vendor app for a HomeKit product directly -...
