Election Season Spawns Scams With Political Twist

Dirty tricks during political campaigns are nothing new, but the Internet and the proliferation of mobile devices have allowed tricksters to up their games a notch. It came to light last week, for example, that Donald Trump's campaign app was hoovering the address books on his supporters' phones. Trump's app wasn't doing anything illegal. It wasn't even trying to hide what it was doing. The app seeks the user's permission to download all contacts before it does so. However, both the ACLU and EPIC have rapped the practice.

FBI Director Says Prolific Default Encryption...

SonicSpike quotes a report from ABC News: FBI Director James Comey warned again Tuesday about the bureau's inability to access digital devices because of encryption and said investigators were collecting information about the challenge in preparation for an "adult conversation" next year. Widespread encryption built into smartphones is "making more and more of the room that we are charged to investigate dark," Comey said in a cybersecurity symposium. The remarks reiterated points that Comey has made repeatedly in the last two years, before Congress and in other settings, about the growing collision between electronic privacy and national security. "The conversation we've been trying to have about this has dipped below public consciousness now, and that's fine," Comey said at a symposium organized by Symantec, a technology company. "Because what we want to do is collect information this year so that next year we can have an adult conversation in this country." The American people,...

Judge rules that Beats Electronics didn't dupe...

A judge has dismissed the key claims in a lawsuit alleging that Beats Electronics duped one of its early partners before negotiating its $3 billion sale to Apple two years ago, reports the Chronicle.

The summary judgment issued by Los Angeles Superior Court Judge William Fahey resolves the core of a case that accused Beats co-founders Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine of double-crossing former partner Noel Lee, founder of video and audio cable maker Monster LLC.

The allegations, filed last year, had been scheduled to go to trial next week. Now the trial will be limited to Beats' effort to force Monster to pay its attorney fees and other costs, says the Chronicle.

Monster CEO Lee said in the suit that he and Monster invented the technology behind the Beats headphones. The suit claims that Beats co-founders Iovine and Dre (Andre Young...

Positive growth is set to return in 2018 and continue through 2020 with shipments reaching 194.2 million tablets as detachable tablets continue to steal share from traditional computers.

"Appealing to the commercial audience will be key as detachable tablets aim to take a larger piece of the traditional PC market," says Jitesh Ubrani, senior research analyst with IDC's Worldwide...

Apple Ordered To Pay Up To $14.5 Billion in EU Tax...

Apple has been ordered to pay a record sum of 13 billion euros ($14.5 billion) plus interest after the European Commission said Ireland illegally slashed the iPhone maker's tax bill, in a crackdown on fiscal loopholes that also risks inflaming tensions with the United States Treasury. According to the European Union regulator, Apple benefited from selective tax treatment that gave it an unfair advantage over other businesses. In the meanwhile, Apple has refuted such accusations, saying that EU's conclusion has "no basis in fact or law." EU Competition Commissioner Margrethe Vestager said, "If my effective tax rate would be 0.05 percent falling to 0.005 percent -- I would have felt that maybe I should have a second look at my tax bill." Apple CEO Tim Cook said, "Over the years, we received guidance from Irish tax authorities on how to comply correctly with Irish tax law -- the same kind of guidance available to any company doing business there. Users launch class action lawsuit over iPhone 6 “...

Apple’s “Touch Disease” issue on some of its iPhone 6 and 6 Plus handsets has just become a class action case.

The company has been sued by owners of iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus smartphones who say a design defect causes the phones’ touchscreens to become unresponsive, making them unusable.

Per the complaint, Apple has long been aware of the defect, which often surfaces after a flickering gray bar appears atop the touchscreens, but has refused to fix it.

The plaintiffs linked the problem to Apple’s decision not to use a metal “shield” or “underfill” to protect the relevant parts, as it did on versions of the iPhone 5.

“The iPhones are not fit for the purpose of use as smartphones because of the touchscreen defect,” according to the complaint filed in...

Target fails at Apple merchandising

Follow this link, look at the picture. Typical Target merchandising. This approach works well for most Target merchandise, but it misses the mark in showing Apple products in the light in which they were meant to be seen.

Seems likely that’s a big part of why Target missed their Apple product sales projections.

iPads are as good as sedatives at calming kids down...

Quartz:

Using iPads to distract and lower anxiety levels prior to surgeries requiring general anaesthesia proved as effective as traditional sedatives, French researchers found.

Comparing the effects of the drug midazolam on 54 children, administered orally or rectally, with 58 others who played age-appropriate games on an iPad 20 minutes prior to anaesthesia, the researchers found that both the drug and the tablet equally blunted anxiety.

I can’t help but think that an iPad would always win against a drug applied rectally. But that aside, this is good stuff.

Twitter’s battle against ever-increasing spambots

The Verge:

Twitter spam isn’t a new phenomenon, but over the past few weeks the amount of it has certainly increased. I use the social network on a daily basis, and not an hour goes by without a tweet of mine from months or even years ago being liked by a spambot. It’s a practice that generates a notification designed to make you click into the profile, where you’re met with what’s typically a pornographic pinned tweet and a link that will likely bury your PC into malware oblivion.

Yup. I see this on a regular basis. Always wondered what the end-game for the bot creators was. Are they rolled out by the bad guys in the hopes of sowing malware seeds? If I don’t click on the link, is there any other path to harm?

Twitter claims it has a variety of systems in place to detect spam on Twitter, and that the company responds to new forms continuously to combat spammers. Twitter also relies on users to report spammers, but it’s not clear how effective this route...

iPads as effective on kids as sedatives at calming...

If you’re a parent who’s ever wished you could just give your kids a sedative to calm them down, apparently you can – handing them an iPad has exactly the same effect.

A French medical study reported at the World Congress of Anaesthesiologists in Hong Kong found that using iPads to reduce anxiety levels in children prior to surgery was every bit as effective as the sedative midazolam. Midazolam is normally administered prior to a general anaesthetic …

Opinion: Why Apple’s statement on Irish tax ruling...

Tim Cook has today posted an open letter regarding today’s ruling that the company must pay €13B ($15B) in back tax after Ireland broke the law in offering the company a sweetheart deal. In it, he states that Apple is ‘confident that the Commission’s order will be reversed’ on appeal.

It’s honestly hard to see where such confidence comes from. The letter effectively makes three arguments, only one of which is relevant to the case …

Leaked SIM trays suggest 5 color options for iPhone...

With the iPhone 7 (or whatever it ends up being called) set to be launched next week, we already know a lot about Apple’s new phone. The iPhone 7 will largely look the same as the iPhone 6s with tweaked antenna lines and new cameras (dual cameras on the larger 5.5 inch phone). It also seems like Apple is preparing to add a new color option to the lineup, a ‘Space Black’ color variant.

A photo from Macotakara suggests that Apple will not be replacing the Space Grey color but instead add a glossy ‘Space Black’ shade as an additional color option. This would mean Apple would sell a total of five different coloured iPhone 7 units.

Apple’s public response to the EU tax ruling

From Tim Cook’s Message to the Apple Community in Europe:

Thirty-six years ago, long before introducing iPhone, iPod or even the Mac, Steve Jobs established Apple’s first operations in Europe. At the time, the company knew that in order to serve customers in Europe, it would need a base there. So, in October 1980, Apple opened a factory in Cork, Ireland with 60 employees.

At the time, Cork was suffering from high unemployment and extremely low economic investment. But Apple’s leaders saw a community rich with talent, and one they believed could accommodate growth if the company was fortunate enough to succeed.

We have operated continuously in Cork ever since, even through periods of uncertainty about our own business, and today we employ nearly 6,000 people across Ireland.

Apple has been in Cork since 4 years before the very first Mac was introduced. They’ve been in Cork through thick and thin. No possible argument there.

And:

Apple’s $14.5 Billion EU Tax Ruling: An FAQ

Bloomberg put together an FAQ about the EU tax ruling. Here are a few of the questions and answers:

Q: Can Apple afford to pay the bill?
A: Easily. As of last month, Apple had $232 billion in cash, with about $214 billion of that being held overseas.

Q: Who receives the money if Apple ends up paying?
A: The money gets paid to Ireland, which puts those funds into an escrow account and leaves it there until any appeal process has fully concluded.

Q: Is the EU singling out Apple or forcing other companies to obey too?
A: It’s not just Apple. The EU authority has already ordered the Netherlands and Luxembourg to recover as much as 30 million euros ($33.3 million) apiece in back taxes from Starbucks Corp. and a Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV unit. Vestager is also probing Amazon Inc. and McDonald’s Corp.’s affairs in Luxembourg and has signaled she’s...

Apple Ordered to Pay Up to $14.5 Billion in EU Tax...

Bloomberg:

Apple Inc. was ordered to repay a record 13 billion euros ($14.5 billion) plus interest after the European Commission said Ireland illegally slashed the iPhone maker’s tax bill.

The world’s richest company benefited from a “selective tax treatment” in Ireland that gave it a “significant advantage over other businesses,” the European Union regulator said Tuesday. It’s the largest tax penalty in a three-year crackdown on sweetheart fiscal deals granted by EU nations.

And:

Apple and the Irish government have both vowed to fight the decision, which also risks stoking a fight with the U.S. over taxation policies — with the U.S. having already complained that Europe is unfairly targeting American companies and threatening global tax reforms.

And:

“I disagree profoundly with the commission’s decision,” said Irish Finance Minister Michael Noonan. Ireland’s tax system is founded on the strict application of the law “without exception,” he...

OIO's Amp Speaker Case brings theater sound to...

Except for the iPad Pro models that have four speakers located around the perimeter of the device, most iPads provide woefully inadequate sound to match the beautiful streaming video they can receive. A new Indiegogo campaign from OIO launched today wants to change all that. The Amp Speaker Case will work with the iPad Air 1 and 2, as well as the iPad Pro 9.7-inch, and is designed to bring a theater-like sound experience to the iPad.

The Amp is designed as a case, with two big honeycomb acoustic panels that flip out when you're ready for easy listening. It has a 900 mAh 7.4-volt rechargeable battery built in for up to 7 hours of great sound, Bluetooth 4.0 with A2dP support, a pair of ultra-low profile electromagnetic exciters, and microfiber cloth covering the speakers.

A case with big speakers needs a nice stand to go with it, and that's also included in the Amp's design. Want to watch your favorite movie, use your iPad as a...

Apple patents hint at AR/VR head mounts, a media...

Apple has been granted a patent (number 9,429,759) for a “head-mounted display apparatus for retaining a portable electronic device with display” that refers to an augmented/virtual reality system for the iPhone.

The invention involves head-mounted display systems and methods of operation that allow users to couple and decouple a portable electronic device such as a iPhone with a separate head-mounted device. The portable electronic may be physically coupled to the head-mounted device such that the portable electronic device can be worn on the user's head.

Finally, Apple may also be working on a new “media production application,” as hinted at by a newly granted patent (number 9,431,057). The app receives a script of a media project and parses the script to identify (i) story sections of the media project and (ii) characters in the media project. It automatically creates data structures for the story sections and the characters, and...

While Apple is widely expected to switch from LCD to OLED displays for future iPhones from either 2017 or 2018, one company is suggesting that the move made be a purely temporary one.

Digitimes quotes Innolux chairman and CEO Wang Jyh-chau arguing that OLED is not suitable as a permanent replacement for LCD. While the company – an LCD manufacturer – might be expected to make this case, Innolux is not suggesting that Apple will return to LCD, rather than it will adopt a third display technology: microLED (mLED) …

Rumor: Apple planning ‘AirPods’ wireless headphones

Apple is preparing a pair of wireless headphones dubbed "AirPods," two new iPhone models and a total of no less than 10 Apple Watch models — at least that’s what a series of regulatory filings published by the Eurasian Economic Commission — as noted by AppleInsider --  hints.

Apple was granted "active" certification status for a wireless headphone product called “AirPods," alongside three other models to be marketed under the Beats brand. Last month, MacRumors revealed that an "AirPods" trademark filing discovered last October seemingly confirmed Apple's work on upcoming wireless earphones in lieu of a headphone jack on the iPhone 7.

Also, Russian trademark filings discovered...

Apple is rumored to be planning a slew of updates across its iPads, notebooks and desktops according to sources.

The company is said to be expanding its operating system support for the Apple Pencil while widespread hardware changes will emerge in next-gen versions of the iMac, MacBook Air and a 5K standalone monitor in collaboration with LG Electronics Inc., in addition to a thinner MacBook Pro notebook.

Apple is thought to be shipping an updated iPad next year, while new Macs are expected in late 2016 according to anonymous sources. Apple has declined to comment, but it’s been said that in the wake of iPad unit sales declining year-over-year for nine straight quarters, Apple is looking to create more professionally...

Enlarge / VMware Fusion 8.5 for Mac, with tab support. (credit: VMware)

Today, VMware announced upgrades to its desktop virtualization products for Windows, Mac, and Linux. But this time existing users won't have to pay for the new software.

VMware and its rival Parallels have been charging for upgrades every year, and last year both companies required users to upgrade if they wanted VMWare and Parallels to fully support Windows 10. But none of the operating system changes this year are likely to break anything in last year’s virtualization software. This makes it hard to convince customers that they should pay again.

VMware Fusion 8.5 announced at VMworld, free upgrade...

As expected, the recent announcement of Parallels Desktop 12 preceded the release of VMware Fusion 8.5 by only a little over a week. VMware's Mac virtual machine environments -- Fusion and Fusion Pro, have been updated to version 8.5, bringing support for macOS Sierra host and guest machines (with Siri integration and tabbed VM windows), Windows 10 Anniversary, and Windows Server 2016.

The announcement was made today at VMworld, and is a bit different from the usual upgrade announcement in that VMware is not charging a fee for the upgrade. Both Fusion 8.5 and VMware's Windows VM environment -- WMware Workstation 12.5 -- will be available for free to registered existing customers.

VMware's announcement was doubly exciting for...

Apple: the Australian banks’ electronic payments...

Apple has issued a formal response to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC), Australia’s anti-trust regulator, saying that giving Australian banks what they want would be doubly harmful to consumers. The country’s three biggest banks want approval to collectively negotiate with Apple to install their own electronic payments applications on iPhones.

Last month those banks, including the top lender, National Australia Bank, lodged a joint application with anti-trust regulators seeking approval to collectively negotiate with Apple to install their own electronic payments applications on iPhones.

Apple, which operates its Apple Pay mobile payment service, doesn’t allow third-party electronic payment apps to be installed on the smartphone. The banks are seeking to be able to negotiate jointly for access to Apple's phones without themselves being accused of...

Tim Cook responds to Irish tax ruling in public...

Tim Cook has posted an open letter on Apple.com for customers, in response to the European judgement that Ireland must recover 13 billion euros in tax revenue from Apple, covering the period 2003-2014. In the public posting, Cook lambasts the judgement as having serious consequences on European business. It says the ruling suggests Apple received a special deal on our taxes which has “no basis in fact or in law”. Cook says Apple is being compelled to pay back taxes to a government that states Apple does not owe any additional money.
