Standing firm on the decision it originally handed down in November, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission has officially rejected a proposal from a handful of big Australian banks that would have allowed them to negotiate in a group with Apple.

Zephyr Linux: Zippy Performance, Zero Decor

Zephyr Linux, a newcomer to the Linux scene, is still morphing from developmental releases. However, it takes an interesting approach to removing desktop clutter and default software bloat. Zephyr is a collaboration between Leonard Ashley and other developers. Ashley built this distro on Devuan, a fork of Debian, and with it he gives the concept of minimalist design a fresh twist. Zephyr Linux is stripped down so you can remake it your way. Version 1.0 beta 2 stable is available in a separate ISO file for Fluxbox, JWN and Openbox.

Today's news covers the spectrum from a change at Apple retail outlets to social networks to USB problems with macOS 10.12.4:

  • Apple is apparently eliminating business-related positions at Apple retail outlets by the end of April
  • Twitter makes a change that allows those obnoxious political screeds to be even longer by no longer counting user names in replies towards the 140-character limit
  • Facebook adds a personal fundraiser feature
  • USB problems with 10.12.4 appear to be causing issues for a lot of people using USB headsets (and microphones!)

Forty-two percent of the survey respondents expected future online interactions to be about the same as they are today.

Paid streaming music drives retail revenues from...

Estimated retail revenues from recorded music in the U.S. grew 11.4% in 2016 to $7.7 billion in 2016, according to a report from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). The primary driver of that growth was a doubling of paid streaming music subscriptions such as Apple Music, which helped the American music business experience its biggest gain since 1998.

At wholesale values, the industry was up 9.3% to $5.3 billion. Although RIAA’s 2016 revenue report catalogues substantial overall improvement for the industry, revenues are still only about half what they were in 1999, and revenues from more traditional unit-based sales (physical products and digital downloads) continued to decline significantly.

In 2016, for the first time, streaming music platforms generated the majority of the U.S. music industry’s revenues. The streaming category includes revenues from subscription services (such as paid versions of...

Janko Roettgers, reporting for Variety: Streaming music services were for the first time ever responsible for more than 50 percent of all U.S. music industry revenue in 2016, according to new numbers released by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) Thursday. Paid and ad-supported streaming together generated 51 percent of music revenue last year, to be precise, bringing in a total of $3.9 billion. In 2015, streaming music was responsible for 34 percent of the music industry's annual revenue. Much of that increase can be attributed to a strong growth of paid subscriptions to services like Spotify and Apple Music. Revenue from paid subscription plans more than doubled in 2016, bringing in $2.5 billion, with an average of 22.6 million U.S. consumers subscribing to streaming services last year. The year before, subscription services had an average of 10.8 million paying subscribers.

New 9.7-inch iPad teardown reveals it's...

Apple’s new iPad is actually kind of a throwback.

According to iFixit, the 9.7-inch iPad that Apple unveiled last week is essentially a spruced-up version of the original iPad Air released in 2013. They share the same battery and the same display. There are some minor tweaks, too, including the integration of the third-generation A9 chip and Touch ID capabilities.

Their teardown confirmed our initial suspicions that, specs-wise, this new model is a minor upgrade. The biggest draw of the new iPad is the price. The 32GB model is $329, compared to the previous entry-level iPad Air 2 that went for $399.

At the end of April, Apple plans to eliminate such retail store positions as business manager, business events lead, events coordinator, and events lead according to MacRumors, quoting an unnamed “source who shared the company's plans.” Sources within the company, not authorized to speak on Apple's behalf, have confirmed the reorganization in some stores with AppleInsider.

MacRumors’ source says that the elimination of the business manager position is “something of a shock” because they lead the Business Team and are responsible for bringing in up to 20% of overall store sales.

iFixit: New $329 iPad is a throwback to the original...

iFixit

Apple's $329 iPad, officially dubbed the iPad (5th generation), is a lot like the iPhone SE insofar as Apple is revisiting a design from 2013, putting more modern components in it, and selling it for a relatively low price. We already knew from the size, weight, and other specs that the iPad 5 was going to be a lot like the original iPad Air, and a teardown from iFixit reveals just how similar the tablets are inside and out.

For starters, the glass on the front of the tablet and the LCD panel aren't fused together as they are in the iPad Air 2 or either of the Pros. This makes it possible to replace either the glass or the LCD without having to replace both, which can make some kinds of repairs cheaper to do (laminated screens make for thinner...

Twitter stops counting usernames in replies toward...

Twitter’s 140-character limit is essential to its existence, but the company realizes how annoying it can be to trim your thoughts when composing a reply because the person you’re chatting with has a long username. Twitter has decided to no longer count a username toward your 140 characters, a change now rolling out to its iOS and Android apps as well as Twitter.com.

This means tweets will look a little bit different. Instead of including the username of the person you’re replying to in the tweet itself, the username will appear above your text. The change will make tweets more easily readable, especially when conversations include a handful of people. (This also means the end of lengthy @username clusters in Twitter reply canoes, at long last.)

Review: Apple’s $329 iPad is not without compromise...

I fully expected to outright dislike the new budget-friendly 9.7-inch iPad, but it’s the type of product that’s hard to hate. Sure, it lacks the gorgeous laminated, anti-reflective display of the iPad Air 2, and sure it’s not as svelte in either thickness or weight. But there’s no denying that the 2017 iPad with A9 dual core processor in tow, is a good value.

With base model storage starting at a healthy 32 GB, the new iPad is priced so reasonably that it’s almost an impulse buy for anyone previously on the fence about iOS tablets. No longer do you have to pay an extra $100 to obtain a model that will actually work over the long haul from a storage perspective. No longer are you left with an anemic processor that feels somewhat feeble after an iOS update or two.

Even with its obvious shortcomings, the 2017 iPad is worth considering as long as you know what you’re getting into. If you’re brand new to the world of iOS, or you’re coming from a pre-iPad Air device, then...

Facebook’s copycat spree continues with GoFundMe-...

Facebook seems to be on something of a mission at present to copy all the best features from popular apps and services out there. Just a couple of days after it added Snapchat-style ephemeral stories, it has announced that it has created a GoFundMe type personal fundraising feature.

Personal fundraisers allow people to raise money for themselves, a friend or someone or something not on Facebook, for example a pet. Personal fundraisers will launch in the US for people aged 18 years or older, and in beta over the next few weeks, as we hope to continue to learn and improve the product to make it even more useful. For example, we will begin with six specific categories for critical financial needs and include a 24-hour fundraiser review process....

Uber adds option to edit pickup address as it gives...

Uber is today announcing a new feature with the ability for riders to edit their pickup address after requesting a ride.

The feature has been a top request following recent redesigns of the Uber app that implemented automatic positioning using GPS opposed to making users enter their locations manually. If the GPS got your address slightly wrong, however, you’d previously have to contact the driver to varying degrees of success. Today’s update will make it so you can easily adjust your address after requesting the ride without having to contact the driver directly.

Apple, other companies pledge to continue to battle...

Apple, Google, and Microsoft have teamed up with other corporations in the U.S. keeping to their pledges to combat climate change, despite recent actions by President Donald Trump, reports Bloomberg.

The companies say their pledges, coordinated by the Obama administration, reflect their push to cut energy costs, head off activist pressure and address a risk to their bottom line in the decades to come. On Tuesday, Trump signed an executive order telling the Environmental Protection Agency to reconsider climate rules instigated by President Barack Obama, as well as to rescind other Obama orders that forced the government to consider climate change in its decision-making processes.

Well, it’s official. Both the Senate and Congress voted to overturn privacy rules created by the FCC, and your ISP will now be free to sell your Internet browsing history and location data to advertisers.

But if you want to opt out, there’s still one way you can do so: use a VPN (Virtual Private Network) …

Apple files for patents to make it easier to record...

Apple has filed for two patents designed to make it easier to record and author music on an iPhone or iPad. Patent number 20170092320) is for an “automatic music record and authoring tool.”

Audio recording capabilities have become more and more accessible to average users. Where musicians conventionally had to travel to recording studios to record their ideas, improvements in technology have brought cheaper and more sophisticated mobile recording devices to the masses, allowing musicians to record their ideas virtually anywhere and at a moment's notice. Some contemporary recording devices are hand-held (e.g., mobile phones, voice memo recorders, etc.) for portability and convenience.

However, despite these improvements, Apple says there are several shortcomings with contemporary recording devices that stifle creativity. For instance, starting a recording session typically requires a user to navigate a number of menus and settings to place the device...

Apple will begin selling the iPhone in Argentina in...

Apple will begin selling the iPhone in Argentina in April for the first time in years, reports Bloomberg, quoting an unnamed “person familiar with the matter.”

The smartphone has been unavailable from carriers Telefonica SA, America Movil SAB and Telecom Argentina SA because of rules put in place in 2009 by President Mauricio Macri’s predecessor, Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner, who pressured device makers to assemble their products in Argentina. Apple never opened a factory there (though Samsung did).

All regulatory hurdles to import the iPhone have been removed, though the carriers will have to pay import taxes that will make the devices at least 25% more expensive than locally assembled phones, according to Bloomberg. However, despite those obstacles, “iPhones are already a common sight on the streets of Buenos Aires...

MBLM names Apple the ‘most intimate brand’ for 2017

Apple has been named “the most intimate brand,” according to the 2017 Brand Intimacy Survey by MBLM, a consulting, branding, experience and technology company. The rest of the top 10 were Disney, Amazon, Harley Davidson, Netflix, Nintendo, Samsung, Whole Foods, BMW and Toyota.

The rankings were based on the following criteria:

  • Fulfilment: exceeds expectations, delivering superior service, quality, and efficacy;
  • Identity: reflects an aspirational image or admired values and beliefs that resonate deeply;
  • Enhancement: becoming better through use of the brand—smarter, more capable, and more connected;
  • Ritual: ingraining a brand into daily actions—more than habitual behavior. The brand becomes a vitally important part of daily existence;
  • Nostalgia: focuses on memories of the past and the warm, poignant feelings associated with them. These are often brands a customer has...

The latest updates to Apple’s iWork suite included a lot of new features; Keynote’s release notes included a line that was particularly eye-catching. Keynote 7.1 for Mac and Keynote 3.1 for iOS adds the ability to ‘Post interactive presentations on Medium, WordPress and other websites.’

This means you can put a Keynote document on a webpage in just the same way as you can embed a YouTube video. It certainly feels like an advanced feature targeted at iPad Pro as computer users. Unfortunately, the process to actually do this is not so straightforward, with some tricky edge cases about how it works. Read on to find out how to embed Keynote documents on a website or blog …

Congress to US citizens: Want online privacy? Pay up!

Tuesday’s congressional vote to repeal U.S. restrictions on broadband providers doesn’t mean that online privacy is dead. Consumers will just have to pay for it.

The coming repeal, which President Trump is expected to sign into law, paves a clearer path for broadband providers to sell customers’ internet browsing history and other online data, without their consent.

Privacy advocates are worried. Imagine corporate giants snooping on your internet activities, and then bombarding your PC, phone and TV with targeted ads.

However, the privacy rule rollback might have an opposite effect too. Expect broadband providers and other internet services to emerge offering online privacy protections -- but at a price.

Report: Apple App Store will generation over $60...

The Apple App Store is projected to remain the leading app store for the next five years and is slated to generate more than $60 billion in gross consumer spending in 2021, according to a new report by App Annie.

However, when factoring in Google Play and third-party Android stores combined, consumer spend should overtake iOS for the first time ever in 2017, thanks to their “dominant smart device market share and strong installed base growth,” adds the analytics services and market intelligence firm. Overall, the app economy’s future is bright, and we expect worldwide gross consumer spend to surpass $139 billion in 2021.

When Apple announced the new low-cost 9.7-inch iPad, both looks and spec seemed to suggest that it was essentially an original iPad Air with minor updates, and that’s exactly what iFixit found beneath the hood when it did its usual teardown.

Spotify may be the leader when it comes to the largest number of paid subscribers (50 million) for a streaming music service, but it’s Apple Music (which has over 20-million subscribers) that comes out on top when their respective audiences translate into monthly unique users, specifically on mobile, according to a report published this week from mobile analytics firm Verto — as noted by TechCrunch.

Apple’s streaming music service attracted 40.7 million monthly unique users to its service in the U.S. in February, according to the report. Pandora came in at number two with 32.6 million users, and Spotify took third place with 30.4 million unique users for the month. Others ranking highly among music apps include iHeartRadio, SoundCloud and Amazon Music. iHeartRadio took the fourth slot, while SoundCloud took the...
