Macworld The Macalope asks, do you want AI fast, or do you want it right? The Washington Post, it seems, wants it fast. “Apple is behind in AI and killed its self-driving car project. What’s next?” Based on the implications here, we can safely assume it’s one or more of the following: Filing for bankruptcy. Waking up in a dumpster outside of Akron dressed in a Mr. Red costume, remembering nothing of the last four days. Driving for Uber Eats, just until it can make rent again. Getting locked in an Extended Stay America suite by its friends who are “only here to help”. Walking into the ocean, never to be seen again. The Post’s piece is a virtual confetti gun of Apple doom, ranging from the company’s quarterly results to some unit sales figures Tim Cook takes exception to. Meanwhile, The Verge’s David Pierce is slightly more positive on Apple’s chances of recovering from its devastating behindness in AI. “Better Siri is coming: what Apple’s research says about its AI plans” It would be easy to think that Apple is late to the game on AI. And, apparently, get it published in The Washington Post. But over the last few months, rumors and reports have suggested that Apple has, in fact, just been biding its time, waiting to make its move. AI, as with all new technologies, is largely treated as nothing more than a foot race. One must deliver something, anything, to be considered in the race. Who cares how many answers it gets wrong, whether or not you took the source material without licensing it, what kind of junk you’ve wrapped it up in, whether or not you’re just a repurposed crypto company, or whether or not your answers go on to kill people with its flawed results. Shipping is all that matters. Capitalism: not caring about anything since Adam Smith. IDG IDG IDG What is lost in the discussion is whether or not there’s a right way and a wrong way to ship AI. Others have complained that on-device AI, like math homework, is simply too hard. “Plus, if it’s on the device, how will we scrape all the data?! It’s like you’re not even thinking!” That part’s just a coincidence, of course. It’s really because it’s too hard. Doesn’t work. Not even worth trying. Apple, as Pierce notes, thinks it can do it. By taking advantage of the most inexpensive and available storage on your device, they found, the models can run faster and more efficiently. The killer app here, of course, is making Siri better. But beyond just a Siri that’s more responsive and intelligent is the ability to privately synthesize your information for you. Apple greatly improved autocompletion by putting it on the device, so it would try to anticipate the words you might want next, not what some clown in Hoboken wants. (The Macalope’s not trying to deride Hoboken, it’s just that there’s an actual clown who lives there who was greatly skewing the autocompletion data. Thanks, Carl.) Imagine your device knowing you better based on your data… and then not sharing that with advertisers. Seems worth a little wait to the Macalope. None of this is unusual. People said Apple was late to other janky technologies, too, like netPCs, netbooks, and, well, smart speakers. Smart speakers persist, of course, but the market potential wasn’t exactly one Apple needed to rush to get into. It obviously remains to be seen if Apple can make on-device AI work. Maybe it can’t deliver. But it should at least get some credit for trying to implement AI in a way that’s better from the perspectives of privacy, licensing and targeted results. Apple Inc10:21 amEvery new Apple product coming in 2024
Macworld Over the past few years, Apple has overhauled its entire product range, including transitioning the Mac from Intel to its own processors, introducing the tough Apple Watch Ultra, adding a new Plus model to the iPhone lineup, and revealing a brand-new product category (the yet-to-launch Vision Pro). In this article, we take a look at what we expect Apple to launch in 2024 and beyond. We have investigated every rumor and trend we could find to bring you our predictions. Read on to find out what could be in store. Apple will be holding an event on May 7 named Let Loose. It is expected that the company will unveil two new iPad Air models and two new iPad Pro models. New iPad Keyboards and a new Apple Pencil are also expected. What Apple released in 2023 Apple hit the ground running in 2023 with new Macs and a new HomePod in January. Then at WWDC in June the company launched no less than three new Macs and a brand new device – the Vision Pro – alongside revealing its plans for macOS 14 Sonoma, iOS 17 and watchOS 10. Finally (maybe) Apple launched the new iPhone 15 series and the Apple Watch Series 8 and Apple Watch Ultra 2 at an event in September and then made macOS Sonoma and iOS 17 available for customers to download later that month. Then at an Apple event on October 30 the company unveiled new MacBook Pro and iMac models. M2 Mac mini Mac mini with M2 Pro 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro with M2 Pro chip New full size HomePod (bit of a surprise this one!) A larger 15-inch MacBook Air A new Mac Pro with the M2 Ultra A new Mac Studio, also with M2 Ultra and M2 Max. iPhone 15, Plus, Pro and Pro Max 2023 Apple Watch Series 9 And Ultra 2 M3 iMac M3, M3 Pro and M3 Max MacBook Pro (14-inch and 16-inch) And of course, the brand-new Vision Pro headset was unveiled (although it won’t arrive until 2024) What new Apple products are coming in 2024? So far in 2024 Apple has released the following new products: Apple launched the Vision Pro headset in the U.S. on February 2. The M3 MacBook Air launched on March 4. Just looking at 2023 gives us clues as to what must be coming in 2024. In 2023 no iPads were updated, we still haven’t seen an M3 or M3 Pro Mac mini (despite the M3 becoming available) and only the AirPods Pro (and EarPods) got USB-C. It seems likely that in 2024 products will get similar updates. What else can we expect? In the sections below we’ve split products into categories including Mac, iPad, iPhone and some new product categories. Read on to find out what to expect at Apple next event and throughout the year. Apple Apple Apple New Macs With the update for the Mac Pro at WWDC in June 2023 Apple finished transitioning all its Macs from Intel processors to its own silicon. Apple launched the M3, M3 Pro and M3 Max chips at the end of October 2023, so we can expect the following updates soon: Mac mini with M3 and M3 Pro Now that the iMac has an M3 chip, and the MacBook Pro an M3, M3 Pro and M3 Max chip, it is surely only a matter of time before those same chips make their way into the Mac mini. There are rumors that the Mac mini may not be updated until the M4 chip arrives, but we think that would be a huge disappointment with the Mac mini being the only Mac desktop that would offer the M3 Pro chip. For this reason, failure to update the Pro version of the Mac mini leaves a gap in the lineup. Read: New Mac mini rumors. When? Mid to late 2024 we hope! Mac Studio with M3 Max and M3 Ultra The next on the list for update will be the Mac Studio, which is due a M3 upgrade too (in this case the M3 Max and M3 Ultra). We anticipate that this will happen at WWDC in June. Read: M3 Mac Studio rumors. When? June 2024 Mac Pro with M3 Max and M3 Ultra If the Mac Studio is getting an update with the M3 Max and M3 Ultra you can rest assured that the Mac Pro will too. When? June 2024 iMac Pro M3 Pro There is a new iMac with M3 chip, but it’s still got a 24-inch screen. What people want is a return of a more professional iMac with a bigger screen. Apple is said to be working on a Pro version of the iMac, a return of the 27-inch iMac Pro perhaps. It sounds like an M3 Pro iMac might happen, but we could be waiting a little longer for that one. There was one iPad that wasn’t even updated in 2022—the iPad mini—so that looks the most likely for an imminent update. But there may be an upgrade coming to the iPad Air too. iPad mini A new iPad mini (seventh generation) could be coming soon. Read: iPad mini 7th gen rumors When? Spring 2024 we hope, but later in 2024 more likely iPad Air The iPad Air could soon get an update to the M2 chip. There is also a rumor that we could see a larger iPad Air, perhaps 12.9 inches. Read: iPad Air 6th gen rumors When? May 7, 2024 iPad Pro New iPad Pro models are said to feature OLED displays for the first time, making them thinner and potentially improving battery life. The front camera is said to be moving to the long edge, so it’s on top when the iPad is in landscape orientation. Alongside an M3 upgrade there could be a 14-inch iPad Pro coming from Apple, but we don’t expect to see this in May 2024. When? May 7, 2024 11th gen iPad The 10th generation iPad joined the lineup in October 2022 so a new model can be expected in 2024. The 9th gen model is likely to be retired, so perhaps Apple will continue to sell the 10th gen model, or lower the entry-level price for the 11th gen iPad when it launches. When? Spring 2024 we hope, but later in 2024 more likely New iPhones The arrival of a new set of iPhones isn’t likely to happen before September 2024. There is a small chance we could see a new iPhone SE before then, but we think we won’t. Dominik Tomaszewski / Foundry Dominik Tomaszewski / Foundry Dominik Tomaszewski / Foundry iPhone 16 The iPhone 16 is likely to arrive, like clockwork, in September 2024. Read: iPhone 16 rumors When? September 2024 iPhone SE There have recently been a few rumors about the iPhone SE. A supposed leak revealed a bigger screen, notch and Face ID, for example. This isn’t the first we’ve heard of a bigger version of the iPhone SE. The question is, will it still feature the Home button? Read about the iPhone SE Plus. Read: iPhone SE rumors. When? Spring 2025 New AirPods The AirPods Max are desperately in need of an update. Will they get an update in 2024? Unfortunately, there aren’t any noisy rumors about them right now. There are rumors about a new cheaper AirPods model, dubbed AirPods Lite by some. These are said to cost $99 and could arrive alongside 4th gen AirPods in the spring. The wait for new AirPods Pro could stretch to 2025. They could offer new health-related features when they arrive. Read: New AirPods rumors. When? Summer or Fall 2024 New Apple Watch We expect that Apple will launch an Apple Watch Series 10 and a third-generation Apple Watch Ultra in September 2024. Both will feature a new S10 chip. A third-gen Apple Watch SE is also possible. Read: New Apple Watch 2024 When? Fall 2024 New product categories If Apple was never to innovate away from the products it makes right now it could be left behind as technology progresses. It’s no surprise therefore that the company is working on various new areas. We don’t expect these to land in 2023, but rumors suggest that some of them still could arrive sooner rather than later. HomePod with screen We do hope there is some truth in the rumors that Apple is working on a HomePod with a screen. We’ve always said that a screen would make the HomePod infinitely more usable, but perhaps we are the only ones who hate having to talk to our speaker and control the HomePod via an iPhone. A screen would extend the uses of the HomePod beyond audio into visual – so you could watch podcasts and news reports and YouTube videos, but most usefully communicate via FaceTime. So far all Apple has done is brought back the full-size HomePod that it removed from sale. Read: HomePod with screen rumours. When? Perhaps “Vision Pro 2” and “Vision Air?” Don’t expect them soon, though. Rumors vary, but none of them say that new Vision hardware is due until at least 2025, maybe even 2026. We do hope to get news as to when Apple will release the current Vision Pro around the world soon. Read our When will the Vision Pro launch outside the US. An anonymous reader quotes a report from Wired: In April, Apple sent notifications to iPhone users in 92 countries, warning them they'd been targeted with spyware. "Apple detected that you are being targeted by a mercenary spyware attack that is trying to remotely compromise the iPhone associated with your Apple ID," the notification reads. Users quickly took to social media sites including X, trying to work out what the notification meant. Many of those targeted were based inIndia, but others in Europe also reported receiving Apple's warning. Weeks later, little is still known about the latest iPhone attacks. Former smartphone giant Blackberry, now a security firm, has released research indicating they are linked to a Chinese spyware campaign dubbed "LightSpy," but Apple spokesperson Shane Bauer says this is inaccurate. While Apple says the latest spyware notifications aren't linked to LightSpy, the spyware remains a growing threat, particularly to people who may be targeted in Southern Asia, according to Blackberry's researchers. Described as a "sophisticated iOS implant," LightSpy first emerged targeting Hong Kong protesters in 2020. However, the latest iteration is much more capable than the first. "It is a fully-featured modular surveillance toolset that primarily focuses on exfiltrating victims' private information, including hyper-specific location data and sound recording during voice over IP calls," the researchers wrote. April's warnings were not the first time Apple has issued notifications of this kind. The iPhone maker has sent out alerts to people in over 150 countries since 2021 as spyware continues to target high-profile figures across the globe. Spyware can be weaponized by nation-state adversaries -- but this is relatively rare and expensive. Its deployment is typically highly targeted against a very specific group of people, including journalists, political dissidents, government workers, and businesses in certain sectors. "Such attacks are vastly more complex than regular cybercriminal activity and consumer malware, as mercenary spyware attackers apply exceptional resources to target a very small number of specific individuals and their devices," Apple wrote in an advisory in April. "Mercenary spyware attacks cost millions of dollars and often have a short shelf life, making them much harder to detect and prevent. The vast majority of users will never be targeted by such attacks." Plus, Apple says its Lockdown Mode feature can successfully protect against attacks. "As we have said before, we are not aware of anyone using Lockdown Mode being successfully attacked with mercenary spyware," Bauer says. Still, for those who are targeted and caught unaware, spyware is extremely dangerous. There are a number of ways to protect yourself against spyware and zero-click exploits in particular: 1. Regularly Update Devices: Keep your devices updated to the latest software to protect against known vulnerabilities. 2. Restart Devices Daily: Regularly restarting your device can help disrupt persistent spyware infections by forcing attackers to reinfect the device, potentially increasing their chances of detection. 3. Disable Vulnerable Features: Consider disabling features prone to exploits, such as iMessage and FaceTime, especially if you suspect you're a target for spyware. 4. Use Multifactor Authentication and Secure Sources: Employ multifactor authentication and only install apps from verified sources to prevent unauthorized access and downloads. 5. Monitor for Indicators: Be vigilant for signs of infection such as battery drain, unexpected shutdowns, and high data usage, though these may not always be present with more sophisticated spyware. 6. Seek Professional Help: If you suspect a spyware infection, consider professional assistance or helplines like Access Now's Digital Security Helpline for guidance on removal. 7. Utilize Advanced Security Features: Activate security features like Apple's Lockdown Mode, which limits device functionality to reduce vulnerabilities, thus safeguarding against infections.
