The 5 Technologies We Need to Change the World

I just finished reading an interesting hard science fiction book called The Punch Escrow. The story takes place several decades in the future, and it revolves around the idea of quantum foam and teleportation. It points out why teleportation never may be practical, but it brings up the idea of human 3D printing, which could be used more effectively for space exploration. However, it also would have a massive number of other uses, both good and bad, which got me thinking about what else could change our future in a massive way.

Mysterious Mac Malware Has Infected Hundreds of...

An anonymous reader shares a report: A mysterious piece of malware has been infecting hundreds of Mac computers for years -- and no one noticed until a few months ago. The malware is called "FruitFly," and one of its variants, "FruitFly 2" has infected at least 400 victims over the years. FruitFly 2 is intriguing and mysterious: its goals, who's behind it, and how it infects victims, are all unknown. Earlier this year, an ex-NSA hacker started looking into a piece of malware he described to me as "unique" and "intriguing." It was a slightly different strain of a malware discovered on four computers earlier this year by security firm Malwarebytes, known as "FruitFly." This first strain had researchers scratching their heads. On the surface, the malware seemed "simplistic." It was programmed mainly to surreptitiously monitor victims through their webcams, capture their screens, and log keystrokes. But, strangely, it went undetected since at least 2015. There was no indication of who...

Google and Samsung are gaining on Apple in mobile...

Google and Samsung smartphones are gaining on Apple’s iPhone in mobile gaming monetization, according to a new study of 1.4 million players across North America in June from DeltaDNA, as noted by VentureBeat.

The study calculates the percentage of overall players spending money on games each day and the average revenue per daily active user (ARPDAU). The Samsung Galaxy S8+ achieved the highest in both metrics with a 3.3% daily conversion and $0.54 ARPDAU. The iPhone 7 Plus came in second with 2.6% and $0.36 with Google’s Pixel XL closely behind with 2.6% and $0.32.

The study also looked at the percentage of free-to-play (F2P) players going on to spend money each day when using the latest iPhone, Samsung Galaxy S, and Google Pixel smartphone models. The Samsung Galaxy S8+, the most recently released smartphone in the study, is not only...

External Link: The Rock X Siri: Don’t Try This At...

Want to see how well Siri works when it’s backed up by a full team of video production editors? Apple has produced an amusing “film” with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson in which he manages to use Siri repeatedly while doing everyday made-up movie star stuff. We believe all the actual Siri commands he issues could work, although many would require that the iPhone be unlocked. And when we tried to duplicate his commands, Siri failed to understand our words much of the time. Happily, when Siri misheard “read my last email” as “delete my email,” we learned that Siri isn’t allowed to delete emails. Which is a good thing.

∞ The Rock’s crazy, long form Siri commercial

[VIDEO] Not quite sure what to make of this. At almost 4 minutes long, it’s too long for a commercial, though it could easily be cut into reusable snippets. Could this be the beginning of a long-term deal between Apple and Dwayne Johnson (formerly known as The Rock)?

And what about the voice of Siri itself? In the commercial, it’s the voice we all know and love, that of Susan Bennett. But in iOS 11, Apple is shifting to a synthesized voice, a voice that, to me, bears no resemblance to the Siri we’ve all grown to know and love.

Is this new investment in Susan’s Siri voicing a sign that Susan Bennett will have a home in iOS 11?

No matter, take a few minutes, click through to the main Loop post, and watch The Rock, Dwayne Johnson, take Siri through his day. Boring, this is not.

The backup speech, in case the moon landing went...

Friday marked the 48th anniversary of humanity’s first step on the moon. Came across this article, where William Safire talks about the speech he was asked to write for then-President Richard Nixon to deliver if things went terribly wrong.

Shortly before the mission, Apollo 8 astronaut and White House liaison Frank Borman called President Nixon’s speechwriter, William Safire.

“You’ll want to consider an alternative posture for the President in the event of mishaps,” Borman told Safire, according to an NBC “Meet The Press” interview with Safire on July 18, 1999.

At first, Safire didn’t understand what Borman meant — he told NBC that it sounded like “gobbledygook” — but Borman quickly clarified.

“I can hear [Borman] now: ‘Like what to do for the widows,'” Safire said. In short, Borman wanted a backup speech ready in case the Apollo 11 crew died.

A morbid scenario, but a fascinating read.

Ireland seeks custodian for Apple cash as collection...

Peter Flanagan, Bloomberg:

The Irish government is setting up a fund to manage the estimated 13 billion euros ($15.2 billion) it will collect from Apple Inc. in back taxes, nearly a year after the European Commission ruled the country had provided a sweetheart deal on tax to the U.S. firm.

The government and Apple will jointly appoint a custodian to hold the money to be deposited by the iPhone maker, the finance ministry said in an emailed statement. The funds will be held in escrow pending appeals by Apple and Ireland, which could take years. One or more investment managers will also be hired to manage the money.

And from Apple:

“The European Commission’s case against Ireland has never been about how much Apple pays in taxes, it’s about which government gets the money,” said Apple spokesman Josh Rosenstock. “The United States government, the Irish government and Apple all agree we’ve paid our taxes according the law. Since virtually all of our research...

New Apple Park drone footage emerges, shows...

Drone videographer Duncan Sinfield has completed and posted his mid-month flyover of the Apple Park campus, wherein Apple is apparently applying finishing touches such as landscaping.

Specifically this month, Sinfield highlights the work within the spaceship ring. Apple continues to planet trees and other greenery. When completed, the campus will be surrounded by around 9,000 trees and Apple’s efforts to find only the best tress have been detailed in the past.

Sinfield has also noted that Tantau Avenue, which runs alongside Apple Park, has been closed to public vehicle traffic over the last month as Apple continues to work on the visitor center. Apple is also hiring staff for the visitor center ahead of Apple Park’s grand opening.

Landscaping around the Apple Park site picked up momentum this month, especially in the inner-circle area where Apple has planted a large grove of trees.

Analyst said Apple could be obsolete in 3-10 years (...

This is why I need to become a professional analyst: one analyst told CNBC three years ago that Apple could be "obsolete" in three to 10 years, due to increasing competition and "make-believe" valuations in the technology sector.

Yes, it "could" be. It also "could" become more powerful than Microsoft and Walmart combined. I "could" become President of the United States. And pigs "could" learn to fly.

More likely, none of this will happen, at last according to my crystal ball.

In July 2014 Pedro de Noronha, managing partner at hedge fund Noster Capital, said he was unsure about the Silicon Valley-based company's long-term potential.

"I need to know where a company is going to be in 5-to-10 years. I mean look at Apple, a company we all admire… I don't know where they are going to be in three years," Noronha told CNBC in a TV interview at the time. "It's a very competitive landscape. They might...

Apple files for patent for ‘realtime audio effects...

Apple has filed for a patent (number 20170206055) for “realtime audio effects control.” Most likely involving future versions of GarageBand on macOS and iOS devices, it’s for music authoring software can provide features that allow users to store music tracks, samples, or other prerecorded music segments and combine the music segments to create an original musical product.

Apple says the invention applies to a variety of electronic devices “including but not limited to laptop computers, desktop computers, computer terminals, television systems, tablet computers, e-book readers, smart phones, and/or wearable devices such as a smart watch, smart glasses, smart goggles, etc.” And it may or may not involve touch screens.

In some implementations of the invention, a computing device can be configured to present a graphical user interface that enables the dynamic authoring of music by a user of the computing device. The computing device can present a grid of cells, where...

At this point, it is well known that the iPhone 8 (or iPhone Pro, or whatever it’s called) will feature a new (5.8-inch) OLED screen. Reports indicate that this display will be exclusively manufactured and supplied by Samsung, as Samsung currently dominates global supply of phone-sized OLED panels. Apple is never happy to depend on just one supplier for a critical iPhone component, not least it’s arch-rival in the tech landscape.

According to a new article from ET News (via Digitimes), Apple has bought CVD machines and has setup a research & development line in Taiwan dedicated to OLED screen technology. It aims to ultimately expand the OLED supply chain beyond just Samsung, although it’s unlikely that Apple itself would actually do the raw component manufacturing …

Apple Sued By State Farm Over Alleged iPhone Fire

An anonymous reader quotes CNET:
Insurer State Farm and one of its customers, Wisconsin resident Xai Thao, allege that one of Apple's older iPhones had a defective battery that led to a fire last year. A lawsuit filed on Thursday by both State Farm and Thao claims that her iPhone 4S "failed" and "started a fire at Thao's home." The lawsuit further claims that "preliminary investigations show evidence of a significant and localized heating event in the battery area of the iPhone." It also declares that there were "remnants of internal shorting, indicating that an internal failure of the iPhone's battery caused the fire"... The State Farm lawsuit says that Thao's iPhone was "in a defective and unreasonably dangerous condition" when she bought it in 2014. The suit is claiming in excess of $75,000 in damages.
