∞ Billboard interview with Apple Music team, and two...

From the preamble from Billboard’s interview with Jimmy Iovine, Larry Jackson, and Zane Lowe:

Apple Music tells Billboard that it now counts well over 30 million paying subscribers, helping fuel a 17 percent revenue jump for the U.S. recorded-music business in the first half of 2017 over the same period a year ago, according to the RIAA. Meanwhile, Goldman Sachs issued a report in August predicting that subscription streaming would drive the global record business to nearly triple to $41 billion by 2030.

And:

[Iovine] is working to crack what he sees as the music industry’s biggest challenge: how to inject enough “soul” into subscription streaming services so that fans will pay $10 a month instead of listening to their tunes on free services, which are also growing fast.

To do it, he...

Duo Security: ‘alarming’ number of Macs vulnerable...

An “alarming” number of Macs remain vulnerable to known exploits that completely undermine their security and are almost impossible to detect or fix even after receiving all security updates available from Apple, reports ars technica.

The article says that, per an analysis by the security firm Duo Security of more than 73,000 Macs, several retain vulnerabilities that remain in the Extensible Firmware Interface, or EFI — the software located on a computer motherboard that runs first when a Mac is turned on. EFI identifies what hardware components are available, starts those components up, and hands them over to the operating system.

On average, 4.2% of the Macs analyzed ran EFI versions that were different from what was prescribed by the hardware model and OS version, according to Duo Security. Attacks...

Apple reportedly wants develop its own chips for Mac...

Apple is expanding efforts to develop proprietary semiconductors to better compete in artificial intelligence, reducing reliance on major suppliers such as Intel and Qualcomm, reports Nikkei, quoting unnamed “industry sources in Asia.”

"By designing its own chips, Apple can better differentiate itself from others. Further, depending too much on other chip suppliers in the age of artificial intelligence will deter its development," said Mark Li, a Hong Kong-based analyst with Sanford C. Bernstein.

Apple is already building its own iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch chips. It has also created fingerprint chips, and designed a chip for its AirPods that allows pairing with other Apple hardware. The tech giant also built the AI chip powering facial recognition in the upcoming iPhone X. However, the company also wants to build the core...

FCC pushes for Apple to activate FM transmitters in...

Following up on renewed pressure from the National Association of Broadcasters urging Apple to the FM radio capabilities built into the wireless modem of every iPhone, FCC chairman Ajit Pai has stated that he hopes Apple will “reconsider its position” following Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria, which have devastated parts of the United States, including Florida and Texas, and Caribbean islands like Barbuda, Dominica, and Puerto Rico.

Pai went on record to state that “it is time for Apple to step up to the plate and put the safety of the American people first.”

The comment comes from Pai’s following full statement:

“In recent years, I have repeatedly called on the wireless industry to activate the FM chips that are already installed in almost all smartphones sold in the United States. And I’ve specifically pointed out the public safety benefits of doing so. In fact, in my first public speech after I became Chairman, I observed that ‘[y]ou could make a case...

An alarming number of Macs remain vulnerable to known exploits that completely undermine their security and are almost impossible to detect or fix even after receiving all security updates available from Apple, a comprehensive study released Friday has concluded.

Apple Pay Cash feature could arrive in late October

Apple Pay Cash, Apple’s upcoming person-to-person payment feature that was announced at WWDC this past June, looks to be scheduled for release in late October.

Apple Pay Cash will allow Apple Pay users to quickly send and receive secure payments between friends and family. iOS 11 and watchOS 4 users will be able to use the Messages app, or utilize Siri to pay someone using credit and debit cards available in the Wallet app. Received payments are instantly deposited on a new Apple Pay Cash card that will be added to Apple Wallet, and money will be available for immediate usage.

The new betas for both watchOS 4.1 and iOS 11.1 which were released on Wednesday didn’t mention Apple Pay Cash as a new feature present in the software, although an Apple Watch Series 1 web page suggests that the feature could arrive near the end of October.

The Apple Watch Series 3 and iPhone 8 web pages continue to indicate that Apple Pay Cash will arrive this fall.

Two Apple patent filings involve the upcoming...

Apple has filed for two patents involving the upcoming HomePod speaker system. Apple’s HomePod is expected to go on sale in December and cost $349. The device is just under seven inches tall and looks like a piece of furniture. It will be available in both space gray and white, and also acts as a hub for HomeKit devices to provide remote access to home automation.

Patent number 20170280231 is for a “loudspeaker with reduced audio coloration caused by reflections from a surface.” It’s designed to reduce the effects caused by reflections off a surface on which the loudspeaker is resting.

In one embodiment, the loudspeaker has individual transducers that are situated to be within a specified distance from the reflective surface, e.g., a baseplate that rests on a tabletop or floor surface, such that the travel distances of the reflected sounds and direct sounds from the transducers are nearly equivalent.

Patent number 2017028265 is for a “method to determine...

Apple Recommends Children Under 13, Twins and...

According to a security guide published Wednesday, Apple recommends that children under the age of 13 do not use Face ID on the iPhone X due to the probability of a false match being significantly higher for young children. The company said this was because "their distinct facial features may not have fully developed." They also recommend that twins and siblings do not use the new feature. The Guardian reports: In all those situations, the company recommends concerned users disable Face ID and use a passcode instead. With Face ID, Apple has implemented a secondary system that exclusively looks out for attempts to fool the technology. Both the authentication and spoofing defense are based on machine learning, but while the former is trained to identify individuals from their faces, the latter is used to look for telltale signs of cheating. "An additional neural network that's trained to spot and resist spoofing defends against attempts to unlock your phone with photos or masks," the...

FCC Chief Tells Apple To Turn on iPhone's FM...

FCC Chairman Ajit Pai pushed Apple on Friday to activate the FM radio chips in the iPhone. From a report: In the wake of three major hurricanes that have wiped out communications for millions of people over the past month, Pai issued a statement urging Apple, one of the largest makers of cellphones in the US, to "reconsider its position, given the devastation wrought by Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria." FM radios that are already included in every phone could be used to access "life-saving information" during disasters, he said. For years the majority of smartphones sold in the US have included FM radios, but most of them have been turned off so that you couldn't use the function. Why? Mobile customers would be a lot less likely to subscribe to streaming music services if they could just listen to traditional, free broadcast radio. This incentive is especially true for Apple, which has a streaming music service. Apple said in a statement: "iPhone 7 and iPhone 8 models do not...

Epson adds seven new EcoTank all-in-ones to its line...

Epson America, Inc. announced the addition of seven new EcoTank all-in-one printers to the EcoTank line today, including the new Expression Premium models that come with a five-color ink system for better photo and document print quality.

What makes the EcoTank printers so different is the lack of traditional ink cartridges. Instead, the printers have integrated ink tanks that can be easily refilled from specially-designed bottles. Each printer is shipped with about two years of ink in the box, which Epson says is equivalent to about 30 ink cartridge sets.

The printers can save users a lot of money in the long run. For example, I currently use an older Epson WF-3540 all-in-one that uses ink cartridges. Every time I need to change out a set of cartridges, I'm looking at about $85 for the super-capacity black, yellow, cyan and magenta cartridges. Sadly, I usually have to replace them twice a year although I don't do a...

Twitter to Test Drive Double-Wide Tweets

Twitter has announced a limited test to double the maximum tweet size to 280 characters. Twitter has been struggling to boost user engagement, and its tweet character limitation has been the subject of a longstanding debate among customers and company insiders. One reason for the possible change is to correct for the imbalance between applying the maximum character count to Asian characters, which convey more meaning than characters in western languages, noted Twitter Product Manager Aliza Rosen and Senior Software Engineer Ikuhiro Ihara.

FCC chief Ajit Pai wants Apple to stop disabling FM...

Enlarge (credit: Samuel Axon)

Federal Communications Commission chairman Ajit Pai on Thursday issued a public statement requesting that Apple activate the disabled FM radio chips within its iPhones.

Pai made his appeal in the wake of Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria, which have wreaked havoc on communities across the US and beyond in recent weeks. The FCC chief’s framed the activation of the FM radio chip as a boon to public safety, since FM radio signals are generally easier to receive in times of emergency when compared to Internet-based services provided over a cellular network.

Though it may not be obvious at first blush, most smartphones...

Cultural Insularity and Apple TV

From Shannon Liao’s roundup for The Verge of yesterday’s Amazon announcements:

Amazon Fire TV has had 4K support for a while, but a new device
will now support 4K HDR video with 2160p resolution at 60 frames
per second. It has Dolby Atmos integration and an Alexa voice
remote. It costs $70; that makes it priced far lower than the
rival Apple TV 4K, which starts at $179. The Fire TV is available
for preorder now and will come out on October 25th.

The lack of Dolby Atmos support in the Apple TV 4K was a sticking point in several reviews. Atmos support is supposedly coming to Apple TV in a software update, though, so the obvious difference between these products is price.

Without ever having looked at the new Fire TV (I did pre-order one, though, so I can), I’m sure that Apple TV is a more powerful device. The new Fire TV doesn’t even have a power cord — it just...

External Link: Apple Documents Face ID Security...

Apple has released a white paper explaining some of the finer details of Face ID, the facial recognition system coming with the iPhone X. Much like Touch ID, Face ID stores only a partial version of your biometric data on the device, so even if an attacker extracted the data, they couldn’t reconstruct your face. Also, Face ID occasionally adds photos from successful logins to its model so it can continue to recognize you as your face changes over time. Unfortunately, Face ID may not be adequate to foil evil twins (we’re not kidding!).

Trump's proposed tax cuts could be a big deal...

Tax cuts proposed by President Trump and the Republicans could be huge for tech companies such as Apple, notes The Mercury News.

The proposal would cut corporate taxes to 20% from the current 35% to “[stop] corporations from shipping jobs and capital overseas” and reducing taxes on foreign profits. Apple alone holds $231 billion overseas, or 94 percent of the $246 billion cash hoard the company had as of the end of 2016, according to a Moody’s annual investor report in July.

Apple has long advocated for lower taxes on profit made outside its home country, especially because its size and success make it a popular target for critics of American companies that keep most of their money overseas. In 2013, Apple CEO Tim Cook and other Apple execs were called to testify before Congress about the company’s tax avoidance. Cook said, “...

NAB wants Apple to implement FM radio features in...

Though the iPhone includes FM radio chips, Apple hasn’t activated the feature, which would allow the smartphones to listen to FM radio. According to some critics, this puts lives in danger.

This hurricane season, ham radio operators often end up being the only existing news networks for reports from stricken islands and cities. Affected folks had to use FM radio to find out what to do and where to find help.

"Broadcasters are providing information on how to evacuate quickly, where flood waters are raging, how to get out of harm’s way if there’s a tornado or a hurricane," Dennis Wharton, a spokesman for the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB), told Bloomberg. "The notion that Apple or anyone else would block this type of information is something that we find fairly troubling.”

The NAB has been lobbying...

Apple Music tops 30 million paid subscribers

Apple Music exec Jimmy Iovine tells Billboard that the streaming music service now has “well over” 30 million paid subscribers. That’s up from the 27 million announced at the Worldwide Developer Conference in June.

Spotify had 60 million paid subscribers in July. Apple Music doesn’t offer a free tier like Spotify does, offers up a free three-month trial to new users. After the free trial period, it costs $4.99 for a student license, $9.99 for a single user license, and $14.99 for a family license.

Apple reports Apple Music revenue as part of the catch-all Services segment, which reported $7.3 billion in third quarter revenue. That’s up 22% year-over-year.

Apple’s TV strategy becomes clearer as top stars...

The Hollywood Reporter:

The world’s biggest company is officially taking meetings as everyone from Jennifer Aniston to Steven Spielberg salivates over selling the first big show. One studio chief says, “Who wouldn’t want to be the ‘Mad Men’ or ‘House of Cards’ on Apple?”

And:

Though Apple isn’t looking to replicate the pace or scale of rival Netflix’s $6 billion annual spend, it is eager to be in the prestige content business in a significant way. Per multiple sources briefed on the company’s plans, its executives are looking for big, smart, splashy dramas, with at least one citing Game of Thrones, Breaking Bad and The Crown as models. And though there are still plenty of questions — first and foremost, how will an Apple show be distributed? — talent is lining up to provide options.

And:

At press time, the company had bids out on only a handful of projects, including an update of Steven Spielberg’s 1980s sci-fi, horror, fantasy anthology series,...
