Alongside the new iPads, we’re expecting Apple to launch a new design of iPad keyboard case today, potentially branded as the Magic Keyboard Pro. Macworld When the Apple Store goes offline it’s usually an indication that Apple is about to launch a new product. However, that’s not always the case—on May 7, the morning of the Let Loose iPad event, Apple didn’t pull its store offline as it usually does. Why is the Apple Store down? Are you having trouble browsing the Apple Store online? There are a few reasons why the Apple Store might be offline. It could be because Apple is preparing to launch new products at an event, or it could be because Apple is about to start taking pre-orders for a new product. If you are reading this story and it’s the day of an Apple Event then yes, the store is down. Apple has taken it offline while it prepares for new product launches. The store always tends to go offline just before an event–to find out if an event is expected today read: When is Apple’s next event? Even if there isn’t an event planned, there’s also the possibility that the Apple Store could be closed while Apple updates it with new products that will launch later. Wondering whether there are new products expected? Take a look at our New Apple Products round-up. Sometimes Apple just issues a press release relating to new products that it won’t be announcing at an event. Alternatively, Apple might be kicking off pre-orders for upcoming products, as is the case today September 15, 2023. However, don’t jump to the conclusion that if the store is down it means new Apple products are coming, that isn’t always the case. The store might be down due to connectivity issues and for scheduled maintenance. On April 24, 2023, we saw the store go down twice only to go back online without an update. Check the state of Apple’s servers here. Why the Apple Store is down today? The Apple Store is online today (May 7) despite the Let Loose iPad event taking place. What time does the Apple Store usually go down? You may be wondering what time the Apple Store goes down and when Apple makes the announcement. Events tend to start at 10 a.m. at Apple’s HQ in California, which is 1 p.m. ET and 6 p.m. U.K. time. The Apple Store tends to go down at around 5 a.m. ET, 4 a.m. PT, 12 p.m. UK time on those days. If there is no event and the Apple Store is down it could be because Apple is about to issue new product news in a press release. The news usually arrives at around 11 a.m. ET, 8 a.m. PT, and 4 p.m. in the UK. If it is an event day expect the store to be offline until shortly after the event ends. When the site goes down before pre-orders start it usually happens a few hours before the pre-orders are set to start. For example, when the iPhone 15 launched on September 15, preorders were set for 8 a.m. ET, 5 a.m. PT and 1 p.m. in the U.K., the site was offline from a few hours before. Other reasons why the Apple Store could be down However, there are other reasons why the Apple Store can be down, so if you are here on a day when there is no event or pre-orders planned, check the other reasons why the Apple Store could be down below. Apple could be updating the online store Before we explain how to check the status of Apple’s online store, we should first explain the possible reasons why the store might be down. The most exciting reason is that Apple could be updating the store with new products. Apple tends to shut down the Apple Store while it updates the range of products available, whether it be removing old products and adjusting pricing or featuring the latest iPhone or iPad. The tell-tale difference between server issues and Apple updating the Store is the splash page that you land on. If the Apple Store is down due to product changes, a message along the lines of ‘We’ll be right back’ (It used to say: ‘We’ll be back soon’) should be displayed. If this is the case, you don’t need to do anything else: there are no server issues, you just need to sit tight and wait for Apple to update the Store. The Apple Store is down However, if when you try to access the Apple Store you get a 404 error message (or if the site isn’t performing as you’d expect) then there may be an issue with Apple’s servers. To determine whether this is the issue, you can skip the next section and read about how to check the system status below. You are using an outdated version of Safari or macOS If you’re struggling to access the Apple Store, while other people are having no problems, it might be due to your outdated software. If this is the case the message ‘unsupported browser version’ will display when trying to visit the page on older versions. The store also appears to be unavailable when any of the older macOS versions, including macOS Yosemite or Sierra, on other browsers. The likes of Chrome and Firefox will not work unless you update to a recent build. This is thought to be an attempt by Apple to protect its customers from any potential threats. How to check Apple’s System Status The first step in establishing whether the Apple Store is down (apart from going on the site itself!) is to visit Apple’s System Status website. This site displays the current status of every Apple service, from iOS device activations to iCloud and, of course, the Apple Online Store. It not only informs users of any potential problems with the online services, but also gives users a heads up on any scheduled maintenance that could cause issues. It also indicates whether there were recent disruptions that have now been resolved. If you see a message next to the Apple Online Store status, click it. It should bring up more details about the issue including the duration of the outage and the issues that users would have/are experiencing. Read next: How to get an education discount at Apple Check crowdsourced status websites Apple’s System Status site isn’t the only place to find up-to-date information on the status of the Apple Store. Down Detector is a hugely popular third-party status website that relies on crowdsourced information from users to provide up-to-date statuses on a range of online services from PayPal to Steam and the Apple Store too. The site allows users to report issues and allows you to see past issues that have affected the performance of the service. It also features a handy heat map of live outages, so you can see whether the issue is local to your city/region/country. Another good resource is the aptly named Is It Down Right Now?. The site offers similar data to Down Detector but also features a grid displaying access speeds over the past few days. It works in a different way to Down Detector though, as you have to search for the service via URL, and at the time of writing, it checks the status of the entire Apple website, not specifically the Apple Store. Macworld The Macalope asks, do you want AI fast, or do you want it right? The Washington Post, it seems, wants it fast. “Apple is behind in AI and killed its self-driving car project. What’s next?” Based on the implications here, we can safely assume it’s one or more of the following: Filing for bankruptcy. Waking up in a dumpster outside of Akron dressed in a Mr. Red costume, remembering nothing of the last four days. Driving for Uber Eats, just until it can make rent again. Getting locked in an Extended Stay America suite by its friends who are “only here to help”. Walking into the ocean, never to be seen again. The Post’s piece is a virtual confetti gun of Apple doom, ranging from the company’s quarterly results to some unit sales figures Tim Cook takes exception to. Meanwhile, The Verge’s David Pierce is slightly more positive on Apple’s chances of recovering from its devastating behindness in AI. “Better Siri is coming: what Apple’s research says about its AI plans” It would be easy to think that Apple is late to the game on AI. And, apparently, get it published in The Washington Post. But over the last few months, rumors and reports have suggested that Apple has, in fact, just been biding its time, waiting to make its move. AI, as with all new technologies, is largely treated as nothing more than a foot race. One must deliver something, anything, to be considered in the race. Who cares how many answers it gets wrong, whether or not you took the source material without licensing it, what kind of junk you’ve wrapped it up in, whether or not you’re just a repurposed crypto company, or whether or not your answers go on to kill people with its flawed results. Shipping is all that matters. Capitalism: not caring about anything since Adam Smith. IDG IDG IDG What is lost in the discussion is whether or not there’s a right way and a wrong way to ship AI. Others have complained that on-device AI, like math homework, is simply too hard. “Plus, if it’s on the device, how will we scrape all the data?! It’s like you’re not even thinking!” That part’s just a coincidence, of course. It’s really because it’s too hard. Doesn’t work. Not even worth trying. Apple, as Pierce notes, thinks it can do it. By taking advantage of the most inexpensive and available storage on your device, they found, the models can run faster and more efficiently. The killer app here, of course, is making Siri better. But beyond just a Siri that’s more responsive and intelligent is the ability to privately synthesize your information for you. Apple greatly improved autocompletion by putting it on the device, so it would try to anticipate the words you might want next, not what some clown in Hoboken wants. (The Macalope’s not trying to deride Hoboken, it’s just that there’s an actual clown who lives there who was greatly skewing the autocompletion data. Thanks, Carl.) Imagine your device knowing you better based on your data… and then not sharing that with advertisers. Seems worth a little wait to the Macalope. None of this is unusual. People said Apple was late to other janky technologies, too, like netPCs, netbooks, and, well, smart speakers. Smart speakers persist, of course, but the market potential wasn’t exactly one Apple needed to rush to get into. It obviously remains to be seen if Apple can make on-device AI work. Maybe it can’t deliver. But it should at least get some credit for trying to implement AI in a way that’s better from the perspectives of privacy, licensing and targeted results. Apple Inc10:21 amEvery new Apple product coming in 2024
Macworld Over the past few years, Apple has overhauled its entire product range, including transitioning the Mac from Intel to its own processors, introducing the tough Apple Watch Ultra, adding a new Plus model to the iPhone lineup, and revealing a brand-new product category (the yet-to-launch Vision Pro). In this article, we take a look at what we expect Apple to launch in 2024 and beyond. We have investigated every rumor and trend we could find to bring you our predictions. Read on to find out what could be in store. Apple will be holding an event on May 7 named Let Loose. It is expected that the company will unveil two new iPad Air models and two new iPad Pro models. New iPad Keyboards and a new Apple Pencil are also expected. What Apple released in 2023 Apple hit the ground running in 2023 with new Macs and a new HomePod in January. Then at WWDC in June the company launched no less than three new Macs and a brand new device – the Vision Pro – alongside revealing its plans for macOS 14 Sonoma, iOS 17 and watchOS 10. Finally (maybe) Apple launched the new iPhone 15 series and the Apple Watch Series 8 and Apple Watch Ultra 2 at an event in September and then made macOS Sonoma and iOS 17 available for customers to download later that month. Then at an Apple event on October 30 the company unveiled new MacBook Pro and iMac models. M2 Mac mini Mac mini with M2 Pro 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro with M2 Pro chip New full size HomePod (bit of a surprise this one!) A larger 15-inch MacBook Air A new Mac Pro with the M2 Ultra A new Mac Studio, also with M2 Ultra and M2 Max. iPhone 15, Plus, Pro and Pro Max 2023 Apple Watch Series 9 And Ultra 2 M3 iMac M3, M3 Pro and M3 Max MacBook Pro (14-inch and 16-inch) And of course, the brand-new Vision Pro headset was unveiled (although it won’t arrive until 2024) What new Apple products are coming in 2024? So far in 2024 Apple has released the following new products: Apple launched the Vision Pro headset in the U.S. on February 2. The M3 MacBook Air launched on March 4. Just looking at 2023 gives us clues as to what must be coming in 2024. In 2023 no iPads were updated, we still haven’t seen an M3 or M3 Pro Mac mini (despite the M3 becoming available) and only the AirPods Pro (and EarPods) got USB-C. It seems likely that in 2024 products will get similar updates. What else can we expect? In the sections below we’ve split products into categories including Mac, iPad, iPhone and some new product categories. Read on to find out what to expect at Apple next event and throughout the year. Apple Apple Apple New Macs With the update for the Mac Pro at WWDC in June 2023 Apple finished transitioning all its Macs from Intel processors to its own silicon. Apple launched the M3, M3 Pro and M3 Max chips at the end of October 2023, so we can expect the following updates soon: Mac mini with M3 and M3 Pro Now that the iMac has an M3 chip, and the MacBook Pro an M3, M3 Pro and M3 Max chip, it is surely only a matter of time before those same chips make their way into the Mac mini. There are rumors that the Mac mini may not be updated until the M4 chip arrives, but we think that would be a huge disappointment with the Mac mini being the only Mac desktop that would offer the M3 Pro chip. For this reason, failure to update the Pro version of the Mac mini leaves a gap in the lineup. Read: New Mac mini rumors. When? Mid to late 2024 we hope! Mac Studio with M3 Max and M3 Ultra The next on the list for update will be the Mac Studio, which is due a M3 upgrade too (in this case the M3 Max and M3 Ultra). We anticipate that this will happen at WWDC in June. Read: M3 Mac Studio rumors. When? June 2024 Mac Pro with M3 Max and M3 Ultra If the Mac Studio is getting an update with the M3 Max and M3 Ultra you can rest assured that the Mac Pro will too. When? June 2024 iMac Pro M3 Pro There is a new iMac with M3 chip, but it’s still got a 24-inch screen. What people want is a return of a more professional iMac with a bigger screen. Apple is said to be working on a Pro version of the iMac, a return of the 27-inch iMac Pro perhaps. It sounds like an M3 Pro iMac might happen, but we could be waiting a little longer for that one. Alongside an M3 upgrade there could be a 14-inch iPad Pro coming from Apple, but we don’t expect to see this in May 2024. When? May 7, 2024 11th gen iPad The 10th generation iPad joined the lineup in October 2022 so a new model can be expected in 2024. The 9th gen model is likely to be retired, so perhaps Apple will continue to sell the 10th gen model, or lower the entry-level price for the 11th gen iPad when it launches. When? Spring 2024 we hope, but later in 2024 more likely New iPhones The arrival of a new set of iPhones isn’t likely to happen before September 2024. The wait for new AirPods Pro could stretch to 2025. They could offer new health-related features when they arrive. Read: New AirPods rumors. When? Fall 2024 New product categories If Apple was never to innovate away from the products it makes right now it could be left behind as technology progresses. It’s no surprise therefore that the company is working on various new areas. We don’t expect these to land in 2023, but rumors suggest that some of them still could arrive sooner rather than later. HomePod with screen We do hope there is some truth in the rumors that Apple is working on a HomePod with a screen. We’ve always said that a screen would make the HomePod infinitely more usable, but perhaps we are the only ones who hate having to talk to our speaker and control the HomePod via an iPhone. A screen would extend the uses of the HomePod beyond audio into visual – so you could watch podcasts and news reports and YouTube videos, but most usefully communicate via FaceTime. So far all Apple has done is brought back the full-size HomePod that it removed from sale. Read: HomePod with screen rumours. When? Perhaps “Vision Pro 2” and “Vision Air?” Don’t expect them soon, though. Rumors vary, but none of them say that new Vision hardware is due until at least 2025, maybe even 2026.
