Spot the difference: WhatsApp creates its own emoji...

After long using Apple’s emoji set on both iOS and Android, WhatsApp has now created its own. That decision might make some kind of sense if it had decided to do something radically different, but instead it appears to have just created a close copy of Apple’s own designs.

You can see some direct comparisons above …

How to use the Low Power Mode in iOS 11

With iOS 11, you can implement a Low Power Mode for your iPhone and add its icon to the Control Center. Here’s how:

  • Open the Settings app.
  • Tap Control Center.
  • Select Customize Controls.
  • Find Low Power Mode and tap the green “+.” This will add the Low Power Mode icon to your Control Center.
  • Exit Settings, and swipe up from the bottom of your screen to open Control Center. The Low Power Mode icon looks like a tiny battery.

When Low Power Mode is on, your iPhone will last longer before you need to charge it, but some features might take longer to update or complete. Also, some tasks might not work until you turn off Low Power Mode, or until you charge your iPhone to 80% or higher.

Major League Baseball says that it has been trialling the first ever NFC tickets in Apple Wallet. A trial by Oakland Athletics lasted for six games, and was evidently deemed a success as 23 MLB teams will be using the technology next year …

Notable apps and app updates for Oct. 2, 2017

On a regular basis, Apple World Today posts a list of notable new apps or app updates that have been released. They may not necessarily be new, but they're popular and deserve mention. Here are today's picks.

macOS Apps/Updates

Dejal has announced Time Out 2.3, an update to their break reminder app for macOS.

Apple CEO Tim Cook takes the third spot on Vanity Fair’s 2017 “New Establishment” list, a ranking of “of tech savants, moguls, financiers, and entertainers, among others." Here’s what Vanity Fair has to say about Cook: “CROWNING ACHIEVEMENT:

With a market cap north of $800 billion, Apple is on track to be a trillion-dollar company.

“RARE DISPLAY OF MORTALITY: As consumers reject the new MacBook Pro and Apple arrives late to the game with HomePod, an Echo wannabe, the company is clinging to the iPhone for more than half of its revenue—an inauspicious strategy, since phone sales are predicted to decline.

Ireland faces EU rebuke for not yet collecting Apple...

Ireland faces a rebuke from European Union authorities for failing to collect a year-old tax bill of as much as 15 billion euros (about US$17.6 billion) from Apple, reports Bloomberg.

The European Commission, Europe’s anti-trust and consumer investigation agency,  may issue a “non-compliance action as soon as this week,” the article adds, quoting an unnamed “person with knowledge of the matter.” The EU has pushed Ireland to collect the money, which was initially due by Jan. 3.

The EU claims that Ireland, Luxembourg and the Netherlands have attracted investment and jobs by helping big companies avoid tax in other countries, including EU members. The commission suspects Ireland was too lenient in rulings it gave to Apple and which helped the company shield tens of billions of dollars in profit from taxation. At 12.5%,...

Feature Request: Apple should color match all...

Apple has made white accessories a signature design since the white earbuds dangled from the white iPod in 2001. The company even made a whole ad campaign out of the instantly recognizable white cord.

Since then, its cables, adapters, and other accessories have generally followed that trend. With the darker space gray color available as a default on iPhones, iPads, and even MacBooks nowadays, the standard white accessories have started to look cheap and tacky and not iconic for many customers.

Apple currently offers very few accessories in black, leaving that to third-party vendors (or as premium exclusives with the upcoming iMac Pro). I believe black should be standard.

macOS 10.13's Disk Utility 17.0 (1626) does not recognize raw drives, reads a blog post, shared by several readers. From the post: Diskutil does recognize the drive. We'll use it to perform a quick, cursory format (e.g., diskutil eraseDisk JHFS+ NewDisk GPT disk0) to make the disk appear in Disk Utility, where further modifications can more easily be made. Plugging in an unformatted external drive produces the usual alert, "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer. Initialize... | Ignore | Eject", but clicking Initialize just opens Disk Utility without the disk appearing. There's an option in Disk Utility to view "all devices," but clicking that doesn't show raw disks, the blog post adds.

Ask Slashdot: Why Would Anyone Want To Spend $1,000...

Last month, Apple CEO Tim Cook said the $1,000 sticker price for the base model of iPhone X, the latest flagship smartphone from the company which goes on sale next month, is "a value price for the technology that you're getting." An anonymous reader writes: I simply don't understand why anyone would want to spend such amount on a phone. Don't get me wrong. Having a smartphone is crucial in this day and age. I get it. But even a $200 phone, untethered from any carrier contract, will let you install the apps you need, will allow you to take good pictures, surf the web, and listen to music. That handset might not be as fast as the iPhone X or Samsung's new Galaxy Note 8, or it might not be able to take as great pictures, but the difference, I feel, doesn't warrant an additional $800. The reader shares a column: When considering a purchase, comparing the value a product will add to our lives, and its cost is wise. Subjective perceptions affect how we value possessions, but let's...

In a note to clients — as noted by AppleInsider — KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has reduced his forecast for iPhone X units this year to 30 million to 35 million units.

It’s certainly not a lack of demand. The analyst says its due to limited production issues for the smartphone’s TrueDepth Camera, which enables Face ID.

"As issues with the production of TrueDepth Camera can potentially be overcome in a few months, we have full confidence in iPhone's growth prospects in the high-end smartphone market in 2018-19," Kuo wrote.

Hands-on: Best fast charger options for iPhone 8 and...

The iPhone 8 and the upcoming iPhone X both support fast charging via Apple’s 29W USB-C adapter and USB-C to Lightning Cable. Apple says that by using fast charging, your iPhone can charge up to 50% in as little as 30 minutes.

Unfortunately, the official first party charging accessories — its 29W USB-C Power Adapter ($49), and its 1-meter USB-C to Lightning Cable ($25) — cost nearly $75 combined. That’s a lot of money to spend on a fast charging solution, especially for one that isn’t exceedingly faster than Apple’s own 12W adapter + a regular USB to Lightning cable.

The good news is that earlier this week Apple noted that third-party power adapters...

The “truth” about Amazon Prime Video on Apple TV

Reddit post from an account named AmazonVideoEngineer:

Wanted to make this throwaway account after yesterday’s debacle. I saw many people get upset so I wanted to issue this warning: do not expect Amazon to launch before October 26th. The app is done, and has been done for months already. However there are a lot of politics going on beyond my pay grade that are pushing the launch back. And just to clarify, October 26 is the earliest I would expect it. Launch could be pushed well into November.

No way to know if this is fake or not, but it is definitely interesting. Read the whole page for back and forth questions with the alleged engineer. Fascinating. Take with a grain of salt.

UPDATE: I’ve been asked about the reference to “yesterday’s debacle”. I am still looking for a response, but I believe the reference is to last week when Amazon dropped the Apple TV from Amazon.com. As of this post, the Apple TV is still MIA on Amazon’s site.

Why Apple should buy Sony

Frederic Filloux, Monday Note:

Access to superior image sensors, a giant entertainment library and the PlayStation ecosystem… By any measure, Apple acquiring Sony makes a lot of sense.

I’ve heard this argument floated before, but without the “access to superior image sensors” logic. Camera hardware is only becoming more important to Apple and iPhone over time. Interesting post.

∞ Two great new features found in iOS 11 search

Hat tip to Fabrice Dubois for uncovering these two gems in iOS 11’s search. To bring up the search field, as always, press the home button to return to Springboard (the iOS equivalent of the Finder), then pull down to reveal the search field.

With search open, type in a word and search results will show its definition, like so:

And, even better, the search field is now open to catching spelling errors.

To see this one for yourself, open search and start typing fadebook (note the “d” instead of the “c”) or protos instead of photos.

Not sure when typo handling and definition suggestion first shipped, but they’re both nice to see.

If you’ve ever found yourself locked out of your Facebook account while traveling, you’ll know what a pain it can be. The normal two-factor method of confirming your identity is by text message, and if you don’t have roaming on your phone then you’re out of luck.

The company has tried a number of alternatives over the years, and is now adding another – perhaps inspired by Apple’s use of Face ID on the upcoming iPhone X

Samsung will make $110 on each iPhone X

Samsung will make $4 billion more from making parts for Apple’s iPhone than for its own Galaxy S8 handset, according to Counterpoint Technology Market Research— as noted by The Wall Street Journal.

Counterpoint estimates that Samsung will make $110 on each of the 130 million iPhone X units sold until the end of next summer, which represents the strongest sales period for new iPhone models. The firm estimates Galaxy S8 sales to total 50 million in that period with Samsung earning $202 from the parts in each unit.

The iPhone accounted for two-thirds of Apple’s revenue last year. Supplying Apple accounted for one-third of Samsung’s revenue.

Apple reportedly investigating two incidents of...

In the annals of swollen device batteries, this is pretty impressive.

Following reports on social media of two iPhone 8 Plus exhibiting a swollen battery out of the millions shipped, Apple is reportedly looking into the situation surrounding the accounts and the phones themselves.

The reports clearly depict a swollen battery pushing the iPhone 8 Plus screen out of its housing. One user reported that the incident occurred while charging with Apple’s official cable and power adapter. The other account noted that it was received from Apple directly with the screen already popped out.

It’s unknown as to how prevalent this issue might be, although it follows last year’s Galaxy 7 Note battery debacle in which several device batteries exhibited swelling behaviors, the devices themselves being forbidden from some flights for a period of time.

For reference, the reported failure rate on the Galaxy Note 7 exceeded 1 in 20,000 —and linked to both battery...

Apple patent is for remotely controlling a hearing...

Apple wants the iPhone to be able to “remotely control” a hearing aid, as evidenced by a new patent filing (number 20170280225). In the patent filing, Apple notes that modern hearing devices are high tech computing devices equipped with multiple speakers and types of speakers and are capable of receiving sound data from multiple audio data sources such as microphones attached to the hearing device as well as being able to stream audio data directly to the hearing device.

With this advancement in technology comes an increase in the control and flexibility of hearing devices. For example, hearing devices can be adjusted to perform optimally in multiple environments. In addition, modern hearing devices can be very small and placed discreetly inside the ear, almost unnoticeable to others.

While creating smaller, more powerful and more flexible hearing devices has plenty of benefits over older styles, one problem that has arisen is the ability to easily and quickly...

How to block calls on your iPhone or iPad

With iOS, you can block contacts and phone numbers on your device. You can also filter iMessages from unknown senders and report iMessages that look like spam or junk.

If you're in the Phone app under Recents, tap the “i” next to the phone number or contact that you want to block. Scroll to the bottom of your screen, then tap Block this Caller.

If you're in the FaceTime app, tap the “i” next to the phone number or contact that you want to block. Scroll to the bottom of your screen, then tap Block this Caller.

If you're in Messages, open the conversation, tap the “i,” then tap the name or phone number. Scroll to the bottom of the Info screen, then tap Block this Caller.

When you block a phone number or contact, they can still leave a voicemail, but you won't get a notification. Messages won't be delivered. Also, the contact won't get a notification that the call or message was blocked.

(This how-to is based on my experiences and info on Apple's...
