Pro tip: Force your iPhone to check for App Store...

Now that you’ve updated to iOS 10  it’s a great time to update your iOS apps too.

Apple doesn’t allow third-party developers to release app updates that include iOS 10 features until the OS itself is released, which happened today. So you may have more updates than you expected.

I’ve previously written about how iOS Software Update doesn’t check for app updates in the background (you still have to open the app), but did you know that there’s a way to bust the cache and force the App Store to retrieve all of your updates at once?

Well, there is.

Simply open App Store and quickly tap on “updates...

iOS 10 reviewed: There’s no reason not to update

Enlarge / iOS 10 is here. (credit: Andrew Cunningham)

By nature, iOS is not a permissive operating system. Apple started from a position of not trusting third-party software developers, fearing those outsiders could screw up the company's platform (a completely reasonable position to take, incidentally). Every new version of iOS since the second one has been very cautious and deliberate about what new capabilities are given to third-party apps.

iOS 10 offers a lot of new stuff for users, including several redesigned apps, a new design for notifications, an improved Control Center, and more. But it's also got a lot of under-the-hood changes for developers in the vein of...

The first batch of iPhone 7 and 7 Plus reviews are out after five days of hands-on time, and the early word is mostly positive. The camera in particular is a stand-out, and the two lenses on the 7 Plus produce results that easily stand up to the competition, the Samsung Galaxy S7.

As expected, dealing with the lack of a headphone jack was perplexing to some and outright irritating for others. But the impressive cameras on both iPhones, plus the improved battery life and water resistance, make them easier to use on the go.

Adobe has announced that you can now shoot in its DNG raw format for the first time with a new update to its Lightroom for Mobile iOS app running the newly released iOS 10. This comes at the cusp of Apple shipping its brand new iPhone 7 series.

Apple’s free Swift Playgrounds arrives on the iPad

Apple has released Swift Playgrounds, a free iPad app to teach kids of any age basic coding skills in Swift. It’s designed to teach basic programming concepts like loops and conditionals using an animated character that the budding programmers direct by writing code.

The app offers suggestions for code to be used, and Swift Playgrounds also has a special iOS coding keyboard to ease entry of all of those pesky brackets. There's a "Fundamentals of Swift" lesson that teaches the basics; more advanced concepts can be explored in further lessons. Code is created on the left side of the iPad screen, and then results are immediately viewable on the right side of the screen with the tap of a "Run My Code" button. Should developers want to see a full-screen view of their handiwork, it's easy to just swipe the window to take advantage of the complete screen size and resolution.

Once the lessons are over, Swift Playgrounds...

A history of how an iOS 10 upgrade attempt -- which...

Apple has given a statement on the issue that caused the iOS 10 update to fail over the air, and says it has now been fixed. Well, based on my experience, that’s sure not the case and I’d advise everyone NOT to upgrade to iOS 10 just yet.

Here’s Apple’s statement: “We experienced a brief problem with he software update process, affecting a small number of users during the first hour of availability. The problem was quickly resolved and we apologize to those customers. Anyone who was affected should connect to iTunes to complete the update or contact AppleCare for help.”

Here’s a history of my attempt to upgrade an iPhone 6s Plus to iOS 10 (based on my conversation with my AWT compadres, Steve and Marty):

You might want to wait: iOS 10 upgrades crashing for...

Well, like everything new, sometimes it's best to wait. We are getting widespread reports of the iOS 10 upgrade causing iPhones to "brick" (get into the mode where they need to be restored), which is not good. Please hold off on the upgrade for now!

My iPhone 5s "test" machine and 12.9-inch iPad Pro received the upgrade with no problems, but my iPhone 6s Plus is one of the unlucky phones to get bricked. It's now seemingly stuck in restore mode, where I am trying to get it to restore the device to its previous state from an iTunes backup I made earlier today.

Dennis Sellers has also had an iPhone 6s Plus brick itself. Both of us also saw a message from iTunes saying that it "could not connect to the iTunes Music Library", although we're unsure what that's all about.

At least the batteries aren't blowing up...

iOS 10, Released Today, Is Causing Issues For Some...

Apple released iOS 10, the latest iteration of its mobile operating system, roughly an hour ago. If you're planning to update your shiny Apple iPhone or iPad, we will strongly suggest iPhone users to not update for two-three days, especially if an iPhone is your primary phone because it is causing issues for some users. The Next Web reports: According to a growing number of iPhone owners on Twitter, the new iOS 10 update might be worth waiting on. After releasing earlier today, users flocked to the new mobile operating system, as they always do, and a number of them are reporting it's putting the phone into recovery mode, forcing them to go back to wipe the memory, re-install 9.3.5 and then try upgrading again. It's unclear at this point what's causing the issue. At any rate, this isn't the first time a major iOS update has been seeded to users without ironing some critical bugs. Two years ago, iOS 8 had a range of issues, one of which blocked cellular capability on the device....

How I made two ridiculous iOS 10 sticker packs for...

Way back at WWDC in June, Apple demoed how easy it is to open Xcode and create an iOS 10 sticker pack for Messages. Unlike iMessage apps, you don’t need to be a developer or know any code. You just need a Mac with Xcode, a paid developer account, and an idea for a sticker pack.

I’ve had a paid developer account since iOS 5 beta, but I’ve never submitted an app or opened Xcode for anything meaningful before. I’m definitely not a developer so I wanted to put Apple’s pitch to the test and see just how easy it is to create sticker packs.

I’m happy to report today that my ridiculous idea for two sticker packs was a success and both Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump sticker packs are available on the App Store.

watchOS 3 touches down for the Apple Watch; here’s...

Apple has rolled out watchOS 3, which promises “significantly” improved performance with the ability to launch favorite apps instantly, enhanced navigation like the new Dock and all-new fitness and health capabilities for Apple Watch. Here’s how to upgrade:

The iPhone paired to your Apple smartwatch must be running iOS 10. If it is, open the Apple Watch app, then choose General, then Software Update. Your Apple Watch battery must be at least 50% charged, and the smartwatch should be plugged into an external power source.

Kevin Lynch, Apple’s vice president of technology, says the top focus of the operating system update is performance. Launch times should be “instantaneous” as watch OS 3 lets you keep your favorite apps in memory, does background updates, and refreshes data before you bring them up, he adds.

This software update introduces the Breathe app, designed to encourage users to take a moment in their day to do deep breathing exercises for relaxation...

iOS 10 update bricking iPhones and iPads for some...

We have received many reports that users are finding their iPhone and iPad devices ‘bricked’ after attempting the over-the-air iOS 10 update. To restore, affected users must then plug their devices into iTunes on Mac or PC to restore the device.

Details are sparse at this time but the issue appears to be related to the fact that the OTA attempts to download iOS 10.0 and then iTunes updates to iOS 10.0.1. We are tracking the story and will update if we hear any more details about this issue.

DODOcase SMARTvr brings virtual reality to almost...

All photos ©2016, Steven Sande

Earlier this year I wrote a review of the DODOcase P2 Virtual Reality Popup Viewer, an inexpensive VR viewer that works with Google Cardboard-compatible apps to turn an iPhone (or most smartphones for that matter) into a virtual reality headset. About the only problem I really had with the P2 was that truly was made out of cardboard -- and not of the Google variety -- and I found that the more I used it, the more beat up it got. Fortunately, DODOcase ran an Indiegogo campaign to bring a much more durable and good-looking VR viewer to market in the form of the $39.95 SMARTvr Smartphone Virtual Reality Viewer

Being a VR geek who doesn't want to spend too much money on viewers, I backed the Indiegogo campaign and received...

John Gruber’s iPhones 7 review

There’s just a ton of chewy goodness here. And that plural in the title, mwah, love it!

If you are at all wrestling with the jet black versus matte black finishes for the iPhone 7, your answer lies within this review. Personally, I find the micro-abrasion issue inviting, in the same way I think of a new leather pair of sandals, jacket, or guitar strap. I prefer a worn in look and feel. It makes the leather feel like part of my life.

If you are anal about the finish of your iPhone, steer clear of the jet black or get a case. Me, I went right for the jet black, no regrets, no looking back.

AirPods review roundup: weird looks, okay sound,...

With mixed reviews of the iPhone 7, we took a look to see whether the same was true of Apple’s highest-tech headphones, the all-new wireless AirPods with their ultra-slick pairing system facilitated by the W1 chip.

Here, however, we found greater agreement. Everyone was impressed by the instant pairing and by the intelligence in the AirPods – like auto-pausing when you remove them from your ear. Most people seem to agree that the sound quality is distinctly average but acceptable to most. And there’s also widespread agreement that the look is definitely on the dorky side …

The new iPhones and the newer, AWS-3 spectrum bands

Aaron Pressman, writing for Fortune:

Apple made several choices in the wireless capabilities of its new iPhone 7 that could complicate life for some of the phone’s owners.

None of the new iPhones will be able to go online using a spectrum band known as AWS-3, according to Apple’s specifications page. Carriers spent almost $45 billion last year at a federal auction for the rights to use the AWS-3 band, also known as LTE band 66, and are starting to put it in service. The carriers all also operate on other high-speed bands that will be iPhone 7 compatible, but they won’t be able to connect to the new phone with the additional AWS spectrum.

Here’s a link to Apple’s iPhone 7 specs page. Scroll down and see for yourself.

For consumers, that means their new iPhones may not be able to jump onto a band that is apt...

Four VirnetX patents ruled invalid in legal battle...

Four patents VirnetX, an Internet security software and technology company, said were infringed by Apple have been deemed invalid by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, as the patents don't actually cover new inventions, the Office's Patent Trial and Appeal Board argued, according to Bloomberg. VirnetX CEO Kendell Larsen said his company will appeal the USPTO's decisions.

In January 2014, VirnetX filed a motion with the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas seeking to supplement its infringement contentions against Apple, the defendant in a patent infringement lawsuit. And in May 2016 the company asked a Texas court to order Apple to stop providing its FaceTime and Messages features to customers, following the patent troll’s early court victory regarding patent infringement.

The motion alleged that Apple products,...

Apple launches iMessage App Store with various...

Jeff Benjamin, writing for 9to5Mac:

Let the deluge begin… Not long after the Super Mario Run iMessage sticker pack was made available to iOS 10 users, Apple has unleashed the entire iMessage App Store. The iMessage App Store, which is available for iOS 10 users, features sticker packs from companies like Disney, Bandai Namco, Sanrio, and others.

In addition to the sticker packs, the iMessage App Store features full-fledged iMessage apps and games. Several of the apps that were demonstrated during the WWDC 2016 keynote are here, such as Square Cash, OpenTable, and JibJab.

I’ve been seeing a steady stream of new iMessage content, similar to what we saw when Apple opened up the Apple Watch to third party complications.

I found this interesting:

Some of the apps are standalone iMessage apps, while others are extensions of already existing apps in the main App Store. You can tell which apps are extensions when the regular app is downloaded on your Home...

Sprint pre-orders of iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus...

No much for the new iPhone being a bust. Not only is it breaking sales records at T-Mobile, but pre-orders of iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus at Sprint are up more than 375% in the first three days over last year.

Since Sprint began accepting pre-orders on Sept. 9, new and existing customers have been placing orders for iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus at a rate nearly four times greater than this time last year, according to Sprint CEO Marcelo Claure. The wireless carrier also offers its “Unlimited Freedom” plan: two lines of unlimited talk, text and data for $100 a month. Unlimited Freedom includes unlimited mobile-optimized streaming videos, gaming and music, and unlimited 4G LTE data for most everything else.

A strap for your AirPods

If you haven’t already, read Jim’s excellent, hands-on review of the AirPods, Apple’s wireless earpods.

Seems to me, the AirPods should stay in your ears just fine. As Jim says:

The AirPods actually fit my ears better than the wired EarPods. One explanation for this could be that the wires create a tension point using the EarPods to be pulled out of your ear a little bit.

This statement really resonated for me. When my Apple EarPods come out of my ears, it is always because of tension on the wires, caused by an unintentional tug from shirt, jacket, or some outside force.

Jim continues:

I walked, jumped, ran, shook my head around, bent down, tipped over, and did every other move I could think of to make the AirPods fall out of my ears—they never did.

That said, if you are in an environment where you need a bit of safety, Amazon sells something called the AirPods strap. I actually think this would be useful in certain environments. For...
