A review of the Wacom Bamboo Tip Stylus: Compact...

Not everyone needs an Apple Pencil. Apple’s stylus is designed for the iPad Pro, but doesn’t provide any functionality with the iPhone or other models of the iPad. There are a number of manufacturers who manufacture styluses for “the rest of us”, with Wacom being perhaps the best known. Today we’re looking at Wacom’s newest stylus, the $49.95 Bamboo Tip

Wacom Bamboo Tip Stylus. Photo © 2018, Steven Sande

Battery-powered, but not an active stylus

The first thing you’ll notice about the Bamboo Tip is that it requires charging. There’s a tiny Lithium-polymer battery inside that provides up to 20 hours of use on a 2-hour charge. But the Bamboo Tip is not an active stylus — that is, it doesn’t pair with your device, nor does it transfer any information to your device about tip angle, pressure, and so on.

So why does it need a battery? Well, when you use a...

Opinion: HomePod’s hi-fi focus is Apple’s first...

While some may argue that HomePod will fail in the market due to Siri’s performance compared to other voice assistants, many seem to discount the value of a smart speaker focused on high end sound quality. From the start, Apple has positioned HomePod as audio fidelity first, everything else second.

Based on a recent Reddit thread from r/audiophile, Apple has delivered on its hi-fi promise. Just like Apple has been praised for its displays on iPhones, iPads and Macs for being best-in-class and tuned to look true-to-life, the HomePod appears to be Apple showing off how it can use its audio engineering expertise to push the best performance out of a small music speaker…

Apple’s iCloud Drive lets you securely access all of your documents from your Mac, iPhone, iPad, iPod touch and even a Windows PC. When you set up iCloud, you automatically get 5GB of storage. If you need more iCloud storage, you can buy more starting at 50GB for $0.99 a month directly from your Apple device. When you choose a new storage plan, your existing plan is canceled and you're charged the prorated cost of the larger plan (the cost of the higher-tier plan minus the prorated cost of the previous plan).

In a note to clients — as noted by MacRumors — KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo doesn’t think we’ll see a second generation iPhone SE this year, as Apple puts its resources into three new smartphones in the pipeline that he's forecasting. He writes:

The announcement of three new iPhone models in the same quarter in the second half of 2017 was the first time Apple made such a major endeavor, and we believe the delay of iPhone X, which had the most complicated design yet, shows that Apple doesn't have enough resources available for development. Comment: How HomePod could be better for early...

Apple has entered two new product categories in the last few years — wearables and smart speakers — with dramatically different levels of hype.

Apple Watch was one-half of the iPhone 6 keynote and warranted a second event before its debut. HomePod was similarly introduced months in advance as a sneak peek at the end of WWDC but its launch has been noticeably more low-key.

That may be because Apple is taking HomePod slower and the addressable market is limited to just three countries to start, but ultimately HomePod may prove a better investment for early adopters than Apple Watch did.

HomePods still available for February 9 pickup or...

A few weeks ago on the Apple World Today News Update Podcast, we noted that Apple had apparently manufactured one million HomePods in its first production run. That number is probably spot on, as the new Apple smart speaker is still available online to pre-order for delivery or pickup on February 9.

The HomePod is primarily designed to be used with the Apple Music service and will also be Apple's first entry into the smart speaker market now dominated by Amazon's Alexa-based Echo devices. Unlike Alexa, however, Siri (the intelligent assistant in the HomePod) is only listening for the words "Hey, Siri" before it begins paying attention to your commands. Alexa is constantly listening and sending voice data to Amazon's servers -- if you have privacy concerns, the HomePod is the way to go.

As you can see from the screenshot at right, HomePod availability in the Denver, Colorado area is wide open. Some individual stores may be low in stock and showing later delivery dates...

Review: Living with Vitra’s Pacific Chair, Jony Ive’...

If I asked you to name a few common technology products, office chairs probably wouldn’t make the list. The act of sitting down is such a fundamental human activity that chairs are often overlooked entirely, and rarely thought of as technology. Yet, sitting has quietly become an art in itself. The engineering behind a chair can make or break your productivity and its design can compliment or ruin the appearance of room. Multiply that factor by 12,000 – the number of employees expected to occupy the new Apple Park campus in Cupertino – and suddenly choosing the right chair becomes vital.

With that in mind, upon hearing that Apple – with guidance by Jony Ive – had picked Vitra’s Pacific Chair as the seat of choice for one of the most creative workforces on earth, I knew I had to...

Apple Could Use ARM Coprocessors for Three Updated...

According to a Bloomberg report, Apple could be working on three new Mac models for this year. From a report: All three of them could feature an ARM coprocessor to improve security. Apple isn't switching to ARM chipsets altogether. There will still be an Intel CPU in every Mac, but with a second ARM processor. Currently, the MacBook Pro features a T1 chip while the iMac Pro features a T2 chip. On the MacBook Pro, the ARM coprocessor handles the Touch ID sensor and the Touch Bar. This way, your fingerprint is never stored on your laptop's SSD drive -- it remains on the T1 secure enclave. The Intel CPU only gets a positive response when a fingerprint is validated. The iMac Pro goes one step further and uses the T2 to replace many discrete controllers. The T2 controls your stereo speakers, your internal microphone, the fans, the camera and internal storage.

HomePod: An hour in the hands of an audio engineer

Reddit user WinterCharm, an audio engineer who got an hour to play with a HomePod:

Fucking hell this thing is TINY. It’s really surprising to see it in person. Hefting it is odd, too. The fabric is soft but firm. It was also lighter than I was expecting. It’s also very pretty. Aside from the single cord coming out the back, there is no idication that it has a particular side/front. It’s built to blend into whatever space it’s in, rather than stand out.

And:

Having heard it side by side with The Sonos Play One and Google Home Max, A single HomePod is already much better than both in terms of sound quality.

And:

The first impression was the neutrality of the speaker. The HomePods are tuned for an as-true-to-recording sound. When the song calls for it, there is bass. When the song turns to crystal clear highs, they are reproduced faithfully. What really was interesting is the instrument separation in the room. At about 45% volume, the HomePod FILLED...

Things Apple's $350 HomePod Smart-Speaker Can...

In June last year, Apple announced the HomePod, its first smart-speaker which will battle Amazon's sleeper hit Echo speakers and Google's Home speakers. Apple being late to enter a product category is nothing new, but the HomePod has a few other strange things about it. Apple said it won't begin shipping the HomePod until December that year, in a departure of its own tradition. Then the device's shipment was delayed till "early 2018" -- February 9 is the current shipping date. Bloomberg has reported about the difficulties Apple engineers faced over the years to come up with the HomePod. At any rate, Business Insider now has more information about the device, and is reporting the things that Apple's first smart-speaker won't be able to do. From the report (condensed): 1. HomePod can't pair with Android phones. 2. HomePod doesn't recognize different people's voices. 3. HomePod can't check your calendar. 4. HomePod doesn't work well with other streaming services besides Apple Music. (...

Apple is working on at least three updated Mac models with custom, company-built co-processors for release as soon as this year, including updated laptops and a new desktop, according to Bloomberg, quoting an unnamed “person familiar with the plan.”

So far, only two Mac lines include custom Apple processors: the MacBook Pro with Touch Bar and the iMac Pro. The publication also reports that a new iPad will be launching towards the end of the year. Details on these machines are scarce as they are presented as tidbits as part of a larger article on Apple’s chip division.

Apple will reportedly halve its iPhone X production...

Apple will halve its iPhone X production target to 20 million units for the first quarter of calendar year 2018, according to Nikkei Asian Review sources.. The drop reportedly follows lower-than-expected holiday sales for the premium iPhone.

Apple’s total production target for the lower priced models (iPhone 8, 8 Plus, and 7) is expected to stay at 30 million units. On a related note, KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo says in notes to clients that Apple’s expected 6.1-inch LCD iPhone will be a huge hit with consumers, offering capabilities of the iPhone X at a lower price point.

"We are positive on the shipments outlook of the 6.1" LCD iPhone, and forecast it will have a weighting of around 50...

External Link: Comparing the HomePod’s Sound Quality...

It will be a while before we see in-depth analyses of the HomePod’s audio capabilities, but iMore’s Serenity Caldwell was impressed by its sound quality in her first impressions of Apple’s new smart speaker. She compared it to the Amazon Echo, Google Home Max, and the Sonos One, and “came away from that test both impressed and shocked by the engineering Apple has put into making this tiny 7-inch speaker a musical powerhouse in your living room.” On the downside, she notes that the HomePod currently lacks stereo pairing, multi-room audio, multi-user support, and native support for services other than Apple Music.

Creating business cards is a breeze with Business...

Chronos' Business Card Shop for macOS (10.11 or later) makes it easy to design business cards. And the latest version (8) adds enhanced color capabilities.

However, it was the completely redesigned interface plus maps integration integration in version 7 that really won me over. It made it easier for users to show their customers exactly where their place of business is located.

The interface redesign also saw the Smart Inspector replaced with dedicated inspectors in sidebar for convenient, one-window use. Also, the interface was streamlined to bring focus to the design canvas and maximize its area.

Business Card Shop boasts standalone inspectors for users with large screens. A photo browser supports Apple's Photos application, face searching, favorite searching, and place searching. An Auto Enhance feature offers one-click corrections to photos.

Business Card Shop sports a variety of paper texture overlays for photos, a glass texture overlays for photos...

For the third year in a row, Jason Snell of Six Colors has issued his report card on Apple’s performance, once again polling 50 “writers, editors, developers, podcasters, and other people who spend an awful lot of time thinking about Apple.” This year, the group includes TidBITS staffers and contributors Adam Engst, Tonya Engst, Josh Centers, Michael Cohen, Jeff Carlson, Glenn Fleishman, Joe Kissell, Kirk McElhearn, and Rich Mogull. Overall, the group expressed more positive opinions about how Apple did in 2017 than in 2016, but there were dips in software quality, hardware quality, and handling of social issues.

I want an Apple iServe with iBeacon accessories

A few years ago Apple started iBeacon activations at many of its U.S. Apple retail stores. However, I'm looking forward to seeing it used in the home.

iBeacon is an indoor positioning system that Apple says is a "a new class of low-powered, low-cost transmitters that can notify nearby iOS devices of their presence." The technology enables an iOS device or other hardware to send push notifications to iOS devices within close proximity. In the Apple retail stores, it can do things such as informing you of promotional discounts.

Apple’s iBeacon works on Low Energy Bluetooth (BLE). It can be used in a store — not just an Apple store — in a way that allows iBeacons to beam you personal notifications of items around you that are on sale. What's more, it can enable payments at the point of Sale (POS) such that you don’t need to remove your wallet or card to make a payment.

There are applications beyond the retail sector. Imagine iBeacons in a museum giving your...

You can take the notes that you’ve created in other apps, and import them into the Notes app in macOS High Sierra.

When you import notes, you can add them to your iCloud notes account or your On My Mac account. If you store them in iCloud, you can automatically see all of your notes on any device where you’re signed in with your Apple ID.

  • Open your Notes app.
  • Choose to store your notes in iCloud or On My Mac. Click a folder in the account that you want to use.
  • In the menu bar, click File > Import.
  • Select the file or folder that you want to import. If the notes that you're importing are organized in folders, click Options in the lower-left corner to keep them organized.

  • After your notes import, you'll see a new folder in the Notes app called Imported Notes. Then you can organize them into any Notes folder that you want.

Preordered HomePod units look ready to arrive on...

It looks like the HomePod is still set to arrive at February 9th for preorders placed on Friday, January 26th. As of last Friday, customers can still order a HomePod for home delivery or in-store pickup on February 9th, the first day of availability.

The steady release date supports the idea that it may have been the software that held up the HomePod, which was originally slated to ship in December. Apple delayed the product until early 2018, but never seemed to explicitly state the cause of the delay.

Historically, when Apple has delayed a product launch, as with AirPods or iPhone X, a component shortage or some other manufacturing issue has been to blame. When that’s been the case, Apple has quickly sold out of its initial availability, and delivery times have slipped.

It’s also been noted that even if you didn’t place a preorder by 5:30 PM PST on January 26th to order a HomePod, it looks like you can still snag a delivery or in-store pickup on February...

Rumor: Apple to continue selling current-gen iPhone...

The rumor mill has changed and Apple may in fact stick with its usual strategy of selling the current model iPhone X as opposed to replacing it with a second-gen model later this year.

According to unnamed industry sources, Korean publication The Investor reported on Friday that Apple will be launching two new OLED iPhone models later this year, including a larger 6.46-inch model.

The report also claims that the two new models will be “adding to the current iPhone X.”

The report offered the following description:

“The two new models come with 5.85-inch and 6.46-inch screens, along with the 5.8-inch iPhone X, the first OLED iPhone launched last year. With the new addition, the California-based company has also started seeking new panel and battery suppliers.”

Recently, a note published by KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo stated that the iPhone X could be replaced entirely by new models later this year. Such a move would be be unusual for...

Apple Deprecates More Services In OS X Server

Long-time Slashdot reader HEMI426 writes: Long ago, Apple used to produce rack servers, and a special flavor of OS X for that hardware with extra, server-friendly features. After Apple got out of the rack server game, OS X Server soldiered on, with the occasional change in cost or distribution method. The next stop on the long, slow death march of OS X Server is here. With a recent post to their knowledgebase, Apple states that almost all of the services not necessary for the management of networked Macs and other iDevices are being deprecated. These services will be hidden for new installs, and dropped in the future.
Apple writes that "those depending on them should consider alternatives, including hosted services."

Update: John Gruber says he’s heard from “a friend seeded with HomePod” that it works with tracks that are not Apple Music or purchased from the iTunes Store “if you have iCloud Music Library enabled.” This is still a bit unclear as to whether those tracks fully integrate and work with Siri. Ideally, Apple will confirm the functionality here sooner rather than later, because right now it seems that nobody knows what works and what doesn’t work.

Despite the fact that HomePod went up for preorder on Friday, there are still a few details about the device left unknown. While we explained last week that HomePod can play purchased iTunes Music, podcasts, and stream...
