From Android to iOS - The 1st Day

November 16th, 2017 was the date that I decided to purchase the iPhone X to get my son the free iPhone 8. I knew going into it that there would be a wait for the iPhone X. I definitely one that loves instant gratification so this was going to be tough. The sales rep at the AT&T store told me it would be mid December before it arrived. This contradicted what the AT&T website said though. The website said that it would ship between 11/29/2017 and 12/6/2017. This was still going to be a tough waiting period for me. Shortly after I finalized the order, I received an email and text that aligned with the AT&T website's initial estimated date.

I was surprised with an email on November 19th letting me know that my iPhone X shipped. The tracking told me that it should arrive on November 22nd and it was right. I picked the package up from the UPS store that morning. It wasn't instant gratification, but it was only 6 days instead of 2-3 weeks. We've started off pretty good...

Adobe has released its 2017 online shopping data for Cyber Monday and the holiday weekend overall. Apple’s AirPods were some of the hottest sellers during the online shopping day.

Adobe says Cyber Monday is projected to hit a new record as the largest online sales day in history with $6.59 billion. This marks a 16.8% year-over-year (YoY) increase. In comparison, Black Friday and Thanksgiving Day brought in $5.03 billion and $2.87 billion in revenue respectively. Top sellers on Cyber Monday included the Nintendo Switch, PJ Masks and Hatchimals & Colleggtibles figurines, Apple AirPods, streaming devices like Google Chromecast and Roku, and Super Mario Odyssey, the video game.

The holiday shopping season so far (November 1 to 27) drove a total of $50 billion in online revenue. Adobe predicts this will be the first-ever holiday season to break $100 billion in online sales.

iPhone autocorrecting the word ‘it’ to ‘I.T’ on iOS...

Joe Rossignol, MacRumors:

At least a few hundred iPhone users and counting have complained about the word “it” autocorrecting to “I.T” on iOS 11 and later.

This is a bizarre new class of bugs. It started with autocorrect capitalizing the first letter of some words, even in The Middle of a sentence.

Then we saw a rash of autocorrects of the letter I to A[?], much to the amusement of Ohio State fans.

And now this. What’s going on here? Is this machine learning going awry? Is this the future of AI? Works most of the time, but every so often a robot goes insane and starts breaking things?

One problem with machine learning is that it creates evolving behavior, which creates a complex tree of possible behaviors, impossible to completely test.

That said, is that what’s going on here? Or is this something more mundane? It’d be...

Apple patent involves Macs with a gesture-based user...

Apple has been granted another patent (number 20170185161) for a “gesture-based user interface” that hints at gesture controls for Macs. This one is dubbed “three dimensional user interface session using depth sensors.”

In the patent filing, Apple notes that many different types of user interface devices and methods are currently available, including keyboards, mice, joysticks and touchscreens. Computer interfaces based on three-dimensional (3D) sensing of parts of the user's body have also been proposed.

Apple is looking into a gesture recognition system using depth-perceptive sensors. A 3D sensor provides position information, which is used to identify gestures created by a body part of interest. The gestures are recognized based on a shape of a body part and its position and orientation over an interval. The gesture is classified for determining an input into a Mac.

Here’s Apple summary of the invention: “A method, including receiving, by a computer...

Apple patent hints at an AR screen for future Macs

Currently, Apple’s augmented reality (AR) efforts focus on the iPad and iPhone. But a newly granted patent (number 9,830,844) hints that those efforts will expand to the Mac.

The patent is for a method and system for displaying images on a transparent display of an electronic device. In other words, one display would overlay another with an AR interface that interacts with real world objects. The display may include one or more display screens as well as a flexible circuit for connecting the display screens with internal circuitry of the electronic device.

What’s more, the display screens may allow for overlaying of images over real world viewable objects, as well as a visible window to be present on an otherwise opaque display screen. Additionally, the display may include active and passive display screens that may be utilized based on images to be displayed.

In the patent filing, Apple notes that electronic devices increasingly include display screens as...

Mac vs iPad

Gabe Weatherhead, MacDrifter:

When my 10.5″ iPad Pro arrived I decided to do a little experiment. You see, I honestly believe that the iPad, iPhone, and other micro super-computers are the future of computing and I want to force myself out of old-man complacency. Five months ago I committed to that experiment and avoided using my Mac unless there was absolutely no way to do something on my iPad or iPhone. Last week I ended my experiment and I have a few opinions (big surprise).

I use my Mac, iPhone, and iPad in a mix throughout the day. My iPhone is always with me, gets all the looks when I am away from my desk. My Mac gets all my looks at my desk. And my iPad gets the rest, those times when I am bopping about, laying about, or in a car (not driving!)

[Of course, my Apple Watch gets its share of looks, no matter the device I’m using, but in my view, does not impact the Mac vs iPad argument.]

Gabe’s piece really captures my feelings about the Mac, why it...

The reasonably priced ($24.95) TENC for iPhone X from Just Mobile— available in crystal clear, matte clear and matte black — perfectly lines up with the smartphone’s edges (the top two corners are completely covered, and the bottom two corners are covered to the curve). The no-frills case offers protection while offering easy access to all ports, buttons, switches.

The TENC’s abrasion resistant coating keeps the case looking sharp. And its flexible material makes it easy to install and remove.

I also like the way the TENC feels. It’s soft to the touch and actually adds some “grippability” when holding my iPhone X. The only downside is that it doesn’t protect the tablet’s display. For that you’ll have to pay extra for a screen protector.

Bkav hacking group bypasses Face ID, shows second...

In spite of Face ID being an impressive feature, yet another successful proof of concept/hack seems to have taken place.

The security system, which has apparently been fooled by twins, children, and a mask has once again been bypassed by Vietnamese security company Bkav, which made headlines in mid-November after uploading a video featuring Face ID accessed by a mask. Though successful as a proof of concept, there were several questions about the unlocking methods used in the video, including whether “Require Attention” was turned on. On Monday, Bkav shared a second video with a new mask and a clearer look at how the mask was used to spoof Face ID.

The company used a 3D printed mask made of stone powder, which can be replicated for approximately $200. 2D infrared images of eyes were then taped over the mask to emulate real eyes.

Bkav reset Face ID on camera and then set it up anew with the demonstrator’s face. “Require Attention for Face ID” and “Attention...

iPhone X inventory improves at Apple Store retail...

If you’re hankering for an iPhone X, the odds of your being able to hoof it over to an Apple retail location and pick one up have dramatically improved since the handset’s launch at the beginning of November.

The cool cats over at The Mac Observer used Apple’s own inventory availability checker to see where the iPhone X is available.

The results proved encouraging.

The 64 GB and 256 GB models in both silver and Space Gray were available at most Apple retail stores checked.

The retail option is currently the fastest means of snagging an iPhone X at the moment. And while an online order may be convenient, the current delivery windows run between December 11th and December 18th depending on your location.

The iPhone X is Apple’s new flagship smartphone. It sports a 5.8-inch Super Retina OLED screen, 12 megapixel wide angle and telephoto cameras, Face ID, Qi wireless charging support, and more. Pricing starts at $999, and it’s easier to snag one...

Earlier this month, a video from cybersecurity firm Bkav made the rounds for successfully being able to “trick” Face ID using a carefully constructed mask that mimicked a real person’s face. Now, the firm is back with a new attempt at tricking Face ID, showcasing a more advanced 3D printed mask…

iPhone Users Complain About the Word 'It'...

An anonymous reader quotes a report from MacRumors: At least a few hundred iPhone users and counting have complained about the word "it" autocorrecting to "I.T" on iOS 11 and later. When affected users type the word "it" into a text field, the keyboard first shows "I.T" as a QuickType suggestion. After tapping the space key, the word "it" automatically changes to "I.T" without actually tapping the predictive suggestion. A growing number of iPhone users have voiced their frustrations about the issue on the MacRumors discussion forums, Twitter, and other discussion platforms on the web since shortly after iOS 11 was released in late September. Many users claim the apparent autocorrect bug persists even after rebooting the device and performing other basic troubleshooting. A temporary workaround is to tap Settings: General: Keyboard: Text Replacement and enter "it" as both the phrase and shortcut, but some users insist this solution does not solve the problem. A less ideal workaround...

eGPU progress report: hands-on with the AMD RX Vega...

When Apple announced that it would lend official support to eGPU setups via Thunderbolt 3, I was extremely happy with the news. It means adding more graphical power on demand to Thunderbolt 3-enabled Macs like the MacBook Pro.

That said, eGPU support is still being fleshed out in macOS High Sierra, and Apple has stated that the situation will be further addressed in the spring of 2018. In the meantime, progress has been made on the eGPU front, albeit slowly.

Just for the fun of it I decided to test the Sapphire Radeon RX Vega 64 inside of a Mantiz Venus external graphics box connected to a 2017 13-inch MacBook Pro. Although official driver support isn’t yet there, I can report that when running the latest macOS High Sierra 10.13.2, the RX Vega 64 does work to some degree. Here’s a hands-on video look at what I found...

But this year, we’ll be able to score some major deals on lots of different Apple goodies—including the iPhone 8, iPad Pro, Apple Watch, and MacBook Pro. (Yes, seriously.) If you’re ok with slightly older stuff, the savings are even better.

Take a look at what we’ve found so far—and keep an eye on this page through the end of Cyber Monday as we add more deals.

Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides updates add support...

Millions of people rely on Google’s productivity tools for their daily work, and the last few months have been frustrating for iPhone and iPad users. Even though iOS 11 was released back in September—and was in beta for months before—Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides did not support the drag-and-drop feature for iPad users. Such a critical productivity feature, ignored in some of the most popular productivity apps in the world!

And while the iPhone X may have been released just a few weeks ago, the emulator has been available since September for developers, and yet Google has been slow to support the new display size in many of its apps.

Today, Google fixes both of those problems with big updates to Google Docs, Google Sheets, and...

Two Major Cydia Hosts Shut Down as Jailbreaking...

Joe Rossignol, writing for MacRumors: ModMy last week announced it has archived its default ModMyi repository on Cydia, which is essentially an alternative App Store for downloading apps, themes, tweaks, and other files on jailbroken iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch devices. ZodTTD/MacCiti also shut down this month, meaning that two out of three of Cydia's major default repositories are no longer active as of this month. ModMy recommends developers in the jailbreaking community use the BigBoss repository, which is one of the last major Cydia sources that remains functional. The closure of two major Cydia repositories is arguably the result of a declining interest in jailbreaking, which provides root filesystem access and allows users to modify iOS and install unapproved apps on an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. When the iPhone and iPod touch were first released in 2007, jailbreaking quickly grew in popularity for both fun and practical reasons. Before the App Store, for example, it...

Analyst: Apple will spend $4.2 billion annually on...

Apple will $4.2 billion per year on original video content by 2022, according to a report by Loup Ventures analyst Gene Munster.

If he’s right, that will be a major increase on the $1 billion that the tech giant will purportedly spend in 2018, although the amount is still smaller than Netflix and Amazon’s video budgets. Munster predicts that, by 2022, Amazon will be spending the most on original content of any tech giants, with a budget of $8.3 billion, compared to Netflix’s $6.8 billion. He also says that Apple will rebrand Apple Music in the next 2-3 years to reflect its broader scope that will extend beyond music.

The Wall Street Journal reported in August that Apple has set a budget of roughly $1 billion...
