China’s largest display manufacturer, BOE, is reported to be making a serious bid to win OLED orders for future iPhones. It’s said to have offered to construct not just one but two large-scale OLED production lines which would be used exclusively for Apple orders.

Apple is currently dependent on Samsung for all its OLED panels for the iPhone X, a position the company almost certainly wants to change …

Bkav hacking group bypasses Face ID, shows second...

In spite of Face ID being an impressive feature, yet another successful proof of concept/hack seems to have taken place.

The security system, which has apparently been fooled by twins, children, and a mask has once again been bypassed by Vietnamese security company Bkav, which made headlines in mid-November after uploading a video featuring Face ID accessed by a mask. Though successful as a proof of concept, there were several questions about the unlocking methods used in the video, including whether “Require Attention” was turned on. On Monday, Bkav shared a second video with a new mask and a clearer look at how the mask was used to spoof Face ID.

The company used a 3D printed mask made of stone powder, which can be replicated for approximately $200. 2D infrared images of eyes were then taped over the mask to emulate real eyes.

Bkav reset Face ID on camera and then set it up anew with the demonstrator’s face. “Require Attention for Face ID” and “Attention...

iPhone X inventory improves at Apple Store retail...

If you’re hankering for an iPhone X, the odds of your being able to hoof it over to an Apple retail location and pick one up have dramatically improved since the handset’s launch at the beginning of November.

The cool cats over at The Mac Observer used Apple’s own inventory availability checker to see where the iPhone X is available.

The results proved encouraging.

The 64 GB and 256 GB models in both silver and Space Gray were available at most Apple retail stores checked.

The retail option is currently the fastest means of snagging an iPhone X at the moment. And while an online order may be convenient, the current delivery windows run between December 11th and December 18th depending on your location.

The iPhone X is Apple’s new flagship smartphone. It sports a 5.8-inch Super Retina OLED screen, 12 megapixel wide angle and telephoto cameras, Face ID, Qi wireless charging support, and more. Pricing starts at $999, and it’s easier to snag one...

iPhone Users Complain About the Word 'It'...

An anonymous reader quotes a report from MacRumors: At least a few hundred iPhone users and counting have complained about the word "it" autocorrecting to "I.T" on iOS 11 and later. When affected users type the word "it" into a text field, the keyboard first shows "I.T" as a QuickType suggestion. After tapping the space key, the word "it" automatically changes to "I.T" without actually tapping the predictive suggestion. A growing number of iPhone users have voiced their frustrations about the issue on the MacRumors discussion forums, Twitter, and other discussion platforms on the web since shortly after iOS 11 was released in late September. Many users claim the apparent autocorrect bug persists even after rebooting the device and performing other basic troubleshooting. A temporary workaround is to tap Settings: General: Keyboard: Text Replacement and enter "it" as both the phrase and shortcut, but some users insist this solution does not solve the problem. A less ideal workaround...

eGPU progress report: hands-on with the AMD RX Vega...

When Apple announced that it would lend official support to eGPU setups via Thunderbolt 3, I was extremely happy with the news. It means adding more graphical power on demand to Thunderbolt 3-enabled Macs like the MacBook Pro.

That said, eGPU support is still being fleshed out in macOS High Sierra, and Apple has stated that the situation will be further addressed in the spring of 2018. In the meantime, progress has been made on the eGPU front, albeit slowly.

Just for the fun of it I decided to test the Sapphire Radeon RX Vega 64 inside of a Mantiz Venus external graphics box connected to a 2017 13-inch MacBook Pro. Although official driver support isn’t yet there, I can report that when running the latest macOS High Sierra 10.13.2, the RX Vega 64 does work to some degree. Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides updates add support...

Millions of people rely on Google’s productivity tools for their daily work, and the last few months have been frustrating for iPhone and iPad users. Even though iOS 11 was released back in September—and was in beta for months before—Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides did not support the drag-and-drop feature for iPad users. Such a critical productivity feature, ignored in some of the most popular productivity apps in the world!

And while the iPhone X may have been released just a few weeks ago, the emulator has been available since September for developers, and yet Google has been slow to support the new display size in many of its apps.

Today, Google fixes both of those problems with big updates to Google Docs, Google Sheets, and...

Two Major Cydia Hosts Shut Down as Jailbreaking...

Joe Rossignol, writing for MacRumors: ModMy last week announced it has archived its default ModMyi repository on Cydia, which is essentially an alternative App Store for downloading apps, themes, tweaks, and other files on jailbroken iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch devices. ZodTTD/MacCiti also shut down this month, meaning that two out of three of Cydia's major default repositories are no longer active as of this month. ModMy recommends developers in the jailbreaking community use the BigBoss repository, which is one of the last major Cydia sources that remains functional. The closure of two major Cydia repositories is arguably the result of a declining interest in jailbreaking, which provides root filesystem access and allows users to modify iOS and install unapproved apps on an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. When the iPhone and iPod touch were first released in 2007, jailbreaking quickly grew in popularity for both fun and practical reasons. Before the App Store, for example, it...

Apple will $4.2 billion per year on original video content by 2022, according to a report by Loup Ventures analyst Gene Munster.

If he’s right, that will be a major increase on the $1 billion that the tech giant will purportedly spend in 2018, although the amount is still smaller than Netflix and Amazon’s video budgets. Munster predicts that, by 2022, Amazon will be spending the most on original content of any tech giants, with a budget of $8.3 billion, compared to Netflix’s $6.8 billion. He also says that Apple will rebrand Apple Music in the next 2-3 years to reflect its broader scope that will extend beyond music.

The Wall Street Journal reported in August that Apple has set a budget of roughly $1 billion...

From Android to iOS - Why Switch?

The reason for the switch from Android to iOS is an odd reason. It's all because of my 15 year old son!

I've been using the Google Pixel XL for a while now and I've had no issues with it, but when Google announced the Pixel 2 back in October, I almost pulled the trigger on the upgrade. I decided that I really didn't need a new phone and that I would be wasting money upgrading. I resisted and moved on.

That same week, my son cracked the glass on his Samsung Galaxy, again. I loaned him my old Nextbit Robin until we figured out what we were going to do. Fixing his Samsung phone wasn't really going to be worth it on an older phone, so we decided that we'd get him something new for Christmas. My son, Brett, decided to let us know that he didn't want another Android device. He wanted an iPhone. I tried talking him out of it for a couple weeks. He wasn't budging. He's getting older and more independent and my wife, an iPhone 4 user, said, "just get him what he wants already...

Steven Aquino, responding to Marco Arment’s fixing the MacBook Pro post, specifically this point Marco made about the Touch Bar:

Sorry, it’s a flop. It was a solid try at something new, but it didn’t work out. There’s no shame in that — Apple should just recognize this, learn from it, and move on.

From Steven’s response:

Arment’s recommendation that Apple “back away from the Touch Bar” reiterates a popular sentiment in the Apple community: in blunt terms, the Touch Bar sucks. I’ve read many articles and heard many podcasts where prominent members of the community deride the feature and question its future. These criticisms, while legitimate, sting me personally because I like the Touch Bar.

Analyst: improved iPhone X shipping times due to...

In a note to clients — as noted by AppleInsider — KGI analyst Ming-Chi Kuo says the improved shipping times for the iPhone X (now down to 1-2 weeks) is due to improved supply chain enhancements and parts availability, not slowing demand.

He says that Apple's production problems have been largely overcome. The tech giant diversified LCP LTE antenna orders to include a second producer, Career, while production yields of TrueDepth's dot projector, known as the "Romeo" module, have increased. Apple manufacturer Foxconn is now producing between 450,000 to 550,000 iPhone X units per day, up from 50,000 to 150,000 in the weeks leading up to launch, Kuo says. The analyst believes fourth quarter shipments could be 10% to 20% higher than previously estimated.

A peek inside Google’s X ‘moonshot factory’

This is a fascinating glimpse of Google’s R&D organization, known as X. What I found most fascinating, was the coverage of one of the earliest X moonshots, Project Loon:

Loon took the spotlight in the wake of Hurricane Maria, which knocked out power and communications for nearly all of Puerto Rico’s 3.4 million residents.

Before the storm, Project Loon’s team had been working on an AI-based navigation system that can keep high-altitude balloons over a given area for weeks or months at a time to provide aerial internet connections. Peru was the primary testing ground, and Puerto Rico was one of the launch sites. After the hurricane hit, the focus shifted to filling the gap in Puerto Rico. The team quickly worked out arrangements with Puerto Rico’s government and federal authorities as well as AT&T and T-Mobile to boost connectivity.

And:

iOS jailbreaking fading away

Joe Rossignol, MacRumors:

ModMy today announced it has archived its default ModMyi repository on Cydia, which is essentially an alternative App Store for downloading apps, themes, tweaks, and other files on jailbroken iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch devices.

ZodTTD/MacCiti also shut down last week, meaning that two out of three of Cydia’s major default repositories are no longer active as of this month.

And:

The closure of two major Cydia repositories is arguably the result of a declining interest in jailbreaking, which provides root filesystem access and allows users to modify iOS and install unapproved apps on an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.

I’ve always thought of jailbreaking as a wild west frontier, with few rules, little oversight and, correspondingly, no real way to prevent malware. Jailbreaking also technically violates your iPhone warranty.

But, that said, jailbreaking also brought some interesting, experimental features to iOS. Over...

External Link: Marco Arment: How Apple Could Fix the...

Developer Marco Arment has some ideas for how Apple could restore the current MacBook Pro to the glory of the 2015 model. If nothing else, Arment suggests that Apple return to scissor key switches, since the butterfly switches in the current keyboards are disliked by many, unreliable, and expensive to repair. He also proposes removing the Touch Bar, a return to “inverted-T” arrow keys, more ports to reduce dongle dependency, better and more affordable first-party USB-C hubs, and chargers that bring back the charging LED and cable management arms. We agree with Arment, though it’s impossible to know if Apple is open to hearing and responding to such criticisms from the community.

Five foosball game apps for iOS and Android devices

By Mark Cop

Every fooser has to have a foosball application on his phone. I want to offer you the list of five foosball games made for Apple (available at the Apple App Store) and Android devices so there are no excuses why haven't you already installed the most amazing game of foosball on your phone. Each and every one of those games will offer you great gaming experice, you just have to pick one:

Foosball Cup by Ludus Studio

This is, in my opinion, one of the best foosball table games made for Android. The game is made to look like you are playing foosball on a grass field so it is a combination of football and foosball. Controls in the game are highly responsive which provides an awesome gaming experience. You can choose the table size and the difficulty and you can play with different national teams. Some of them are Argentina, USA, Brazil, Canada, China, Germany, Italy and even Russia.

Boost Up is a fine charging pad for Apple’s latest...

While you’re waiting for Apple’s AirPower (the wireless charging accessory coming in 2018)— assuming you are — check out Belkin’s $59.99 Boost Up Wireless Charging Pad, which works just fine with the iPhone X, iPhone 8, and iPhone 8 Plus.

It’s fine-tuned with Qi technology and can charge at levels up to 7.5W for compatible devices. The Boost Up charges Apple’s latest smartphones on contact while maintaining full functionality of the device; you can even receive calls while your iPhone is powering up. Just place your Apple device on the circular pad (which measures jut under five inches in diameter), and they immediately start charging.

The pad’s embossed ring indicates the charging area for best placement. A soft , high-friction base pad grips your iPhone and holds it securely while it’s charging. The Boost Up’s LED indicator will light up to indicate that wireless charging has begun.

The Boost...

How to locate your cursor in macOS High Sierra

If you’re using a Mac with a big screen — say, a 27-inch iMac — it’s easy to “lose” your cursor. However, it’s easy to find it with macOS High Sierra.

Just shake your mouse, or wiggle your finger on the trackpad: it's what we all do instinctively, but doing so will now make the cursor grow in size momentarily so you will have no trouble spotting it.

Motorola Ad Mocks Samsung Ad Mocking Apple

An anonymous reader quotes BGR:
A few days after the iPhone X launched in stores, Samsung came out with an anti-iPhone campaign... I actually did not expect Samsung to pull off cheap tricks like that, but it sure looks like the iPhone X is a pretty scary device to fight against. But what probably nobody saw coming is Motorola trolling Samsung with an ad of its own... The "Up-upgrade to Motorola" ad offers the alternate ending to Samsung's ad, as Motorola explains on its Facebook page... Motorola doesn't even mention the iPhone X, so if you haven't seen Samsung's ad, you'd think it's just going after Galaxy handsets.
Elsewhere on Facebook, Motorola specifically referenced the attachable accessories available for their Moto Z when mocking the Galaxy Note 8.
"Why settle for edge-to-edge, when you could project your screen up to 70 inches?"
